THE PLAYOFF BUBBLE BURSTS AGAIN AT TEXAS In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his race review and analysis from this weekend’s battle at Texas Motor Speedway. And the finish yesterday left every fan at home with a storyline to talk about from Xfinity or Cup series. First up is the completely unexpected onetwo finish by Richard Childress Racing drivers Austin Dillon and Tyler Reddick. What allowed them to do it? Some have speculated that it was 0 0 4

the tires and the track more than the specific setup of the vehicle, and Eric takes us through what happened. But what happens to the playoff standings after this weekend’s surprise upset finish? Where will Jimmie Johnson be when the playoffs begin, assuming he doesn’t get a win before then? Eric takes us though all of it and more, plus he’ll rate it on the Groovy Gauge, all in this episode of Out of the Groove.

LESSONS LEARNED AT TEXAS AUSTIN DILLON OUTSMARTS THE FIELD They say everything’s bigger in Texas. So it was with Sunday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. In the midst of a mediocre season, Austin Dillon used pit strategy and the resulting track position to score a huge win on a day when his No. 3 Chevrolet was by no means the fastest car in the field. With his victory, Dillon is now guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, leaving one less spot available for drivers looking to make the playoffs on the basis of points. Following are five important takeaways: BY JA RED TURNER

FRESHER TIRES DIDN’T PROVIDE BOOST LOGANO EXPECTED
J
oey Logano found himself in a seemingly enviable position on Sunday at Texas when he lined up fourth for the final restart sporting tires that were fresher than those of both race leader Austin Dillon and second-place Tyler Reddick. But Logano, who had taken four tires on the final round of pit stops while Dillon took two and Reddick took on fuel only, wasn’t able to get around the two frontrunning Chevrolets when the green flag waved for the final time with two laps to go. In fact, to his surprise, Logano wasn’t even able to mount much of a charge on the Richard Childress Racing teammates. “Could not believe it. Could not believe it,” Logano said. “I was pretty certain when I was fourth, a little bit newer tires, a lot newer tires, 50 laps on their tires, I thought, ‘Man, they’re sitting ducks, I got ‘em.’ Hindsight is 20/20 and what we would have done different to try to win it.”

IT’S GETTING REALLY BUSY AROUND THE BUBBLE
W
ith eight races to go before the playoff field is set, it’s an all-out cluster near the bubble. With Austin Dillon’s victory on Sunday, 10 drivers are locked into the playoffs by virtue of winning at least one race, while the final six playoffs spots are currently occupied by the six winless drivers who are highest in points. Sitting squarely on the bubble, in 16th-place, is seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who holds just a two-point lead over Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron, who would be the first driver out if the playoff grid was set today. Next up is rookie Tyler Reddick, who is just 14 points behind the cutoff after finishing second on Sunday in Texas. “We’re not where we need to be at,” Reddick said. “But with eight races, 14 more points to get, we just got to keep running races like this. We will continue to stay vigilant and keep our Chevrolet out of those messes, keep finishing these races.”

RYAN BLANEY CAN’T SEEM TO CLOSE THE DEAL
U
ndoubtedly the biggest loser on Sunday at Texas was Ryan Blaney, who despite comfortably winning the first two stages and leading 150 of 334 laps finished seventh in his No. 12 Team Penske Ford. Falling behind on a late round of pit stops and due largely to an ill-timed caution, Blaney was unable to fully recover. It wasn’t the first time in 2020 that Blaney has had the best car in the field but ultimately walked away empty-handed. “Honestly, I don’t know what the opposite material of a golden horseshoe is, but we’ve found it,” the second-generation NASCAR driver said. “We’ve just kind of been unlucky a lot of the year with really fast cars and just cautions when we didn’t need them or just bad breaks. Gosh, we feel like we should have four or five wins at this point. We’ve had cars to do it, and it just doesn’t play out for us, but I’m proud of the speed that we have.”

TYLER REDDICK WAS A TEAM PLAYER
L
ining up alongside Austin Dillon for the final restart with two laps to go on Sunday at Texas, Tyler Reddick had a choice: Go for broke in pursuit of his first career NASCAR Cup Series victory or fall in behind Dillon and play it safe, all but assuring that at least one of the Richard Childress Racing drivers went to Victory Lane. Reddick chose the second — and safer — option. “It’s just one of those deals where it’s risk versus reward,” said Reddick, a Cup rookie. “For us, to race against my teammate, as much as it’s my responsibility to win for my team, I don’t want to take a win opportunity away from either RCR car. Just trying to race as hard as I can without getting the 3 (Dillon) in a position where he lifts, slides up, makes me lift, the cars behind us have an opportunity there to win that race. I just tried to do it as best as I could.”

RCR PLAYED THE STRATEGY GAME TO PERFECTION

I
t wasn’t Las Vegas, but a team willing to take a big gamble ended up stealing the show on Sunday in Texas. With virtually nothing to lose, the Richard Childress Racing teams of Austin Dillon and Tyler Reddick made the risky but ultimately rewarding decision to take on two tires and gas-only, respectively, during the final round of wholesale pit stops while most of the lead-lap cars went for four fresh Goodyear Eagles. The move paid off in a big way, with Dillon winning for the first time since 2018 and Reddick finishing a career-best runner-up. “I just had to have confidence that in the moment we had a car that had potential,” Dillon said. “It didn’t really run well in traffic. If you can get the track position at some point, you can be fast. You saw when we got out front, we had a hot rod. When we put the lefts on, it was the call we needed to go on and win the race.”

RECAPPING JUST SAYIN’JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER ▶ IT WAS TOO HOT TO SAFELY COMPETE
ON SUNDAY IN TEXAS
It was hot as blazes on Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway. So hot that race winner Austin Dillon had to go to the infield car center for two bags of fluids before participating in his post-race press conference. Joining Dillon in the care center was eighth-place finisher Kurt Busch. “I felt great once I kind of got in the air-conditioning,” Dillon said. No kidding. All this begs the question: Should NASCAR really be racing in Texas in mid-July? This wasn’t the original plan, of course. NASCAR typically visits the Lone Star State in April and November but had to make alternative arrangements this year because of COVID-19. Regardless, it seems like there has to be a better way. JA RED TURNER ▶▶ Cheaters Never Prosper — Like, For Real NASCAR made the rare but not unprecedented move of stripping a driver of a victory when Kyle Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota failed post-race inspection after taking the checkered flag first in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Texas Motor Speedway. Honestly, I can’t think of a better policy change that NASCAR has made in the last 20 years than the one to not let a win stand if the winning car flunks inspection. Kudos to NASCAR for sticking to its guns — even when it involves one of the sport’s superstars like Busch. ▶▶ For Johnson’s Sake, Hendrick Needs to Rebound One of the great mysteries of the 2020 season to date is what has happened to Hendrick Motorsports. After coming out of the gate on fire this year, and then continuing to perform at a high level even after the racing resumed following a two-month hiatus for COVID-19, the Hendrick bunch has fallen off to the point that two of the organization’s drivers — Jimmie Johnson and William Byron — are in danger of missing the playoffs. Let’s hope for Johnson’s sake that Hendrick can regain its early-season mojo. It would be a crying shame for the seven-time champ to be locked out of the playoffs in his final season. 0 1 8

IN THE HOTSEAT
IN THE HOT SEAT
with Michael Guariglian BY ROB TIONGSON
0 2 6
Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with Michael Guariglia, a driver in the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series. ▶▶ In your second year in the eNASCAR CocaCola iRacing Series, what are some things you’re encouraged with as we head towards the final stretch of the regular season? Our No. 15 Jim Beaver eSports Polaris RZR Mustang has turned the corner on our slow start to the season. For whatever reason, we haven’t fired off well last year or this year, but we have found some pace lately and been trying to make a charge in the points standings. I am encouraged with the cars that we have bringing to the track and how those cars can translate to the upcoming tracks. Our 1.5 mile and above cars have been strong of late and that will help in this next stretch of races. ▶▶ How do you balance your time working at your day job with competing in eNASCAR? Being honest, it can be a struggle for sure. At one point, I was balancing a job, getting my college degree, and iRacing and trying to have a social life amidst all that. Now that I have completed my degree, things have been easier to manage. Trying to stay on top of things can be difficult. It can be trying but I believe the experience is well worth the balancing act required to compete. ▶▶ Have you ever been starstruck by someone in NASCAR or in an iRacing event? Helping Daniel Suarez in the Pro Invitational Series and spotting for him amongst the stars of NASCAR was the closest thing to being starstruck. Being able to work with an amazing guy like Daniel was a great experience and showed me how much time drivers put into their craft.

Timmy Hill finally got to celebrate his O’Reilly Auto Parts 125 iRacing win in Texas Motor Speedway’s victory lane
AS FREDDIE MERCURY ONCE SANG IN 1975, “IS THIS THE REAL LIFE? IS THIS JUST fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality?” Well, believe it or not, Timmy Hill got to enjoy the rewards of winning the O’Reilly Auto Parts 125, the second eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series race held following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. IT DOESN’T MATTER THAT THE ROCK WAS GOING TO HAVE A RACE TEAM! ACTUALLY, IT does. mkelley22 shared an interesting article from racing-reference.info in which Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was in conversation about having a NASCAR team with veteran (and IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series competitor) Hermie Sadler until the WWE caught wind of this situation. Needless to say, Reddit nation wasn’t pleased with the sad ending of this promising venture. Well, 20 years later, it’s a fun story to recall. 0 3 2

In this case, this fan partook in a fundraiser at Atlanta Motor Speedway and drove their personal car around this beloved track. Moreover, this fan’s daughter got to drive around the track. r/NASCAR . Posted by u/NaBUru38

▶▶ From the gridiron to the virtual racetrack, Bernard Pollard Jr is now making his fearsome presence in iRacing! Clearly, this Super Bowl champion isn’t just in a phase or dealing with a flavor of the month moment. Pollard is all in with NASCAR and he’s even giving the sim racing world a try. Always interactive with drivers, press, and fans, this is the kind of awesome opportunity that NASCAR can enjoy by welcoming new faces like Pollard to the series. 0 3 4

▶▶ The mild mannered, dad joke loving Breanna O’Leary of Jimmy Means Racing’s No. 52 team she had quite a busy day on pit road during the Saturday doubleheader at Texas Motor Speedway. While she normally goes over the wall to change tires, in this case, she pulled some spring rubbers. O’Leary remains a fun follow for racing fans with her hilarious but genuine perspectives of the racing world. Also, she’ll remind you about your monthly rent due on the 1st.
▶▶ Before Ray Alfalla became the eNASCAR legend on iRacing, he was celebrating Richard Towler’s title at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2010. As he shares in this post, it’s incredible seeing these great racers when they were rookies! Might we see a reunion of this great, competitive group once the pandemic ends?
▶▶ This is seriously what makes the NASCAR XFINITY Series into one of the coolest motorsports divisions to follow. In a series where names are made, Anthony Alfredo took the time to reflect on a fun moment from Saturday’s race at Texas Motor Speedway. Alfredo continues to impress on the track!

▶▶ Motorsports journalist Frank Velat wanted to get a pulse from Twitterville with one of the most underrated paint schemes in NASCAR. While Velat appreciated Robby Gordon’s No. 40 First Union Chevy paint scheme from 1996, others shared some obscure ones such as Terry Labonte’s Spooky Fruit Loops ride from 1997.
