PLAYOFF POINT MADE AT NEW HAMPSHIRE In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his race review and analysis of the Foxwoods Casino 301 at New Hampshire. While Brad Keselowski’s win put him into the championship conversation, there was plenty of action in he mid-pack to discuss. First up, Eric takes a dive into Matt Kenseth’s fated outing this season in the No. 42. After a startling showing in the first race back at Darlington, Kenseth has struggled nearly 0 0 4
every week just to place in the Top 20. While the car wasn’t performing spectacularly under the previous driver, Kenseth has yet to demonstrate the qualities that made him a name in the sport to begin with. But there’s more, as Eric takes us through the entire playoff grid, including some of the latest following penalties. Plus, where did New Hampshire end up on the patented Groovy Gauge? Watch the episode to find out!

LESSONS LEARNED AT NEW HAMPSHIRE After nine days of inactivity, it was back to business for the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday afternoon at New Hampshire Motor Speedway where NASCAR’s premier division made its only stop of the 2020 season. While second-place finisher Denny Hamlin was unable to mount much of a charge on race winner Brad Keselowski in the closing laps, there was no dearth of entertainment over the course of the event at the 1.058-mile track, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary season. Following are five lessons learned in the Foxwoods Resort Casino 301. BY JA RED TURNER

ARIC ALMIROLA IS NASCAR’S NEW MR. CONSISTENCY
W
ant to find the most consistent, most overlooked driver in the NASCAR Cup Series these days? Look no further than Aric Almirola, who with a seventh-place finish on Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway has now recorded an incredible nine top-10 finishes in a row. During the streak, which began at Homestead-Miami Speedway on June 14, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver has amassed five top-five finishes, led in a total of five races and moved from 14th to eighth in the standings. “Well, the streak continues,” Almirola said after Sunday’s race at Loudon. “Nine top-10s in a row. So proud of this team. We ran up front a little bit in the beginning and were just off a bit on balance of our car. It was a solid day. We continue to build a points gap back to the cutoff line to the guys in the playoffs, and we just continue the consistency. One of these days, we’re going to get us a win.”

HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS IS STRUGGLING TO REGAIN EARLY-SEASON FORM
I
n the first eight races of 2020, Hendrick Motorsports won twice and seemed to be well on its way to perhaps recapturing the magic of its glory years when the organization amassed 12 premier series championships over a stellar 22-year stretch. But over the last 12 races, Hendrick drivers have been shut out of Victory Lane as the cars from Joe Gibbs Racing, Stewart-Haas Racing and Team Penske have consistently flexed considerably more muscle. So it was again on Sunday at New Hampshire as Team Penske, JGR and SHR drivers accounted for seven of the top eight finishing positions. The highest finishing Hendrick driver was Chase Elliott in ninth as teammates William Byron (11th), Jimmie Johnson (12th) and Alex Bowman (15th) likewise enjoyed no better than a mediocre afternoon. “We were hoping to have a better finish today,” said Elliott, Hendrick Motorsports’ most recent winner. “Definitely not where we want to be, so we’ll keep working and trying to get it better.”

THERE’S A LITTLE BIT OF DAYLIGHT AT THE BUBBLE
W
ith six races remaining before the 16-driver NASCAR Cup Series playoff field is set, a little bit of daylight has opened up around the bubble where Matt DiBenedetto now has a 40-point buffer on Richard Childress Racing rookie Tyler Reddick for the final playoff berth. “I feel okay but not as good as I’d like,” DiBenedetto said. “You want as much cushion as you can, but we’ve had a lot of speed, so I feel great about that part of it.” Trailing Reddick by 10 points and likewise still with an opportunity to battle back into the playoff picture is seventime champion Jimmie Johnson, who is in his last full season of Cup competition. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Erik Jones, meanwhile, is just another six points in arrears of Johnson. Because Sunday’s race was won by Brad Keselowski, a driver who had already been to Victory Lane in 2020, six playoff spots remain available for drivers who haven’t won this year.

KYLE BUSCH’S FRUSTRATIONS ARE SPEWING OVER
J
ust when it seemed like Kyle Busch’s unthinkably disappointing season couldn’t get any more disappointing, think again. Still in search of his first win of 2020, Busch endured one of his hardest days yet on Sunday at New Hampshire when his No. 18 Toyota T-boned the outside wall nary 20 laps in after suffering a tire failure that brought out the race’s first caution. Busch, who started in fifth, finished last in the 38-car field. Not surprisingly, the reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion was frustrated at how it all went down. “I blew a right-front tire for some reason,” Busch said. “I have no idea why. Way too early in the going for anything to be wrong or even to build enough brake temp or brake heat. I don’t know. Just hate it for our team, and the fight that we’ve been having this year seems to be continuing. It’s still 2020, but sooner or later, we have to turn this stuff around.”

BRAD K CAN’T BE WRITTEN OFF AS A SERIOUS TITLE CONTENDER
M
ostly overlooked in a season largely dominated by Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin has been Brad Keselowski, the 2012 NASCAR Cup Series champion. Since winning twice over a three-race stretch shortly after NASCAR returned to action following its extended layoff for the COVID-19 pandemic, Keselowski has flown somewhat under the radar as Harvick, Hamlin and Bubba Wallace have garnered most of the headlines. But with a commanding victory on Sunday at New Hampshire where he led a whopping 184 of 301 laps and comfortably held second-place Hamlin at bay down the stretch, Keselowski appears poised to make some serious noise in the playoffs. The biggest question surrounding the Team Penske driver is whether the uncertainty of his plans for 2021 will become a distraction in the weeks and months ahead. As of now, Keselowski remains a free agent but a return to Team Penske is certainly possible. The quicker Keselowski can get his next contract ironed out, the better off he will likely be.

JUST SAYIN’ ▶ SPEED, NOT POSITION, WILL HOPEFULLY DRIVE BUBBA’S DECISION Reports surfaced over the weekend that Richard Petty Motorsports has offered Bubba Wallace an ownership stake in the company with the hopes of convincing him to re-sign with the organization for the foreseeable future. But Wallace, who is a free agent at season’s end, has indicated he has numerous options available for 2021. I hope for Bubba’s sake that he takes the time to explore all of those options carefully before coming to a decision. As enticing as becoming a part-owner of any team might be, he ultimately needs to go to the place where he will be best-positioned to compete for wins and championships. JA RED TURNER ▶▶ Job Security in NASCAR Shouldn’t Be About Money Asked after his win on Sunday at Loudon about the status of his 2021 contract negotiations with Team Penske, Brad Keselowski admitted there is still work to do. Keselowski also lamented the reality that more and more often these days, drivers land rides on the basis of sponsorship that they can bring to a team — not talent, experience or history of accomplishments. However, for a driver of Keselowski’s caliber to be replaced by someone far less deserving of a top-tier ride would be taking this trend to a whole new — and dangerous — level. Fingers crossed it doesn’t happen.
■■ Fans hold a sign in support of Bubba Wallace during the NASCAR Cup Series Foxwoods Resort Casino 301.
▶▶ Enough with the empty grandstands For the second time in 2020, the NASCAR Cup Series is set for a doubleheader weekend. Unfortunately — just as was the case at Pocono earlier in the year — it will be held without fans. Talk about someone letting the air out of the building. So after New Hampshire Motor Speedway operated this past weekend at 35 percent capacity, the state of Michigan won’t permit ANY spectators this weekend at Michigan International Speedway. Crazy, huh? Here’s reality: If Bristol can host 30,000 fans as it did for last month’s All-Star Race, and Texas and New Hampshire can allow for close to 20,000 spectators, respectively, there’s no reason why MIS — a large facility with more than enough room for adequate social distancing — can’t do the same. 0 1 8

IN THE HOT SEAT
IN THE HOT SEAT Kaz Grala
BY ROB TIONGSON
Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with Kaz Grala, a driver in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. ▶▶ After climbing your way up to the NASCAR XFINITY Series from the ARCA Menards East Series and Truck Series, how would you describe your journey? It’s been amazing so far. I’ve been racing since I was four years old. When I was 10, it was when I started to decide that NASCAR was where I really dreamed of being. When I was a little kid, I dreamed of being able to race against those guys and in those series. And now, I’m here. Every once in a while, you go to the racetrack and you get used to winning, how to make the car better, doing everything right, and not making mistakes. You’re so caught up in the weekend that it’s nice to take a step back sometimes while you’re at the track to be like, “Look at where I’m at. This is so much fun. This is really such a dream come true.” ▶▶ What would you consider as your seminal “Welcome to NASCAR” moment? One of the cool moments I remember from way back when I first started watching NASCAR is when I was a guest of David Ragan’s at New Hampshire Motor Speedway around 2011. I met David at the Summer Shootout. I was in Bandoleros and he’d play in his Legend car every Tuesday night. He got me some infield passes to New Hampshire Motor Speedway and I got to sit up in his pit box back then. That was the first time I got to see, up close and personal, pit stops, the crew chief working, listening to the radio, the spotters, and really immersing myself in what NASCAR racing is.

CASEY KIRWAN DRIVES TO EXCITING MICHIGAN WIN BY ROB TIONGSON
W
ith Michigan International Speedway’s wide corners promoting passing opportunities, Casey Kirwan and his eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series competitors put on a thrilling race last Tuesday night. While Round 11 went eight laps longer than its scheduled distance, it proved to be one of the most exciting events of the year. Although Chris Shearburn started the race from the pole position, he found himself in rather heavy competition all evening long. With 29 lead changes among 15 different drivers, Michigan looked more like her sister superspeedways at Daytona and Talladega. Oftentimes, drivers found themselves two to three wide around the two-mile, D-shaped superspeedway. In turn, it allowed drivers like Ray Alfalla, who started 36th, to rocket their way to the front of the pack. As Alfalla marched his way to the front along with Ryan Luza

and Jarl Teien, Kirwan, driver of the No. 23 Jumpman Toyota Camry, looked more like Michael Jordan around Michigan. Starting from the fourth position, Kirwan kept focused and was rather cool in tenuous moments. Arguably, the Denny Hamlin Racing driver, who recently turned 21, didn’t flinch, even when he was finding himself surrounded by potent contenders like Alfalla, Shearburn, and Luza in his rearview mirror. In the early going, Jeremy Allen and Nick Ottinger wound up collecting Malik Ray in a crash that eliminated each driver from contention. From that point on, while it was relatively clean and green, it was a chess match for those in the lead pack. For those who had the speed to challenge for the lead, they weren’t afraid to play musical chairs, even in close quarters situation. As in the case of on-track NASCAR races at Michigan, drivers and teams considered the fuel mileage game. With the relatively “short” race distance, it offered a split strategy for the competitors to either undercut

their rivals or wait until the last moment to maximize on fuel mileage. Although Kirwan led the most laps, that’s not to say that he didn’t work for the win. When Phil Diaz and Graham Bowlin collided, it became a bit of a battle royale in the Irish Hills. Kolton Keister, Justin Bolton, and Brian Schoenberg elected for track position over fresh rubber and fuel, thus propelling themselves into the top-three. Meanwhile, Alex McCollum won the race off pit road and with the best opportunity to take the victory for his G2 Esports team. When the field got the green flag for the race’s first Overtime attempt, McCollum made haste of the front trio as he took the lead and seemingly within striking distance of his first eNASCAR win. However, trouble ensued behind McCollum and some of the lead lap drivers when Bolton, Nathan Lyon, and Garrett Lowe wrecked violently to bring out another caution. Once the race resumed for the second and final Overtime attempt of the evening, Kirwan channeled his best Luke Skywalker from A New Hope when he made the race-winning move past McCollum.

At long last, Kirwan took the checkered flag for his No. 23 team, joining teammate and points leader Keegan Leahy with a winning effort for Denny Hamlin Racing. “Yea, I had so much confidence going into tonight,” Kirwan said. “I knew we had a real good piece for tonight. You couldn’t get away. I tried to play smart. I tried to wait with 12 to go but they got me going.” Although Kirwan liked his chances in Tuesday night’s eNASCAR race at Michigan, he wasn’t afraid to channel some courage for the win. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to keep up,” Kirwan observed. “I was like, screw it. I’m not going to beat him (Alfalla) on the bottom. I think he got a little loose. I was on the outside, wide open, got a big run, and we split Kollin Keister. It’s unbelievable.” As Kirwan crossed the stripe with the win, Alex McCollum, Ray Alfalla, Chris Shearburn, Christian Challiner, Ray Vincent, Caine Cook, Bobby Zalenski, Logan Clampitt, and Michael Guest rounded out the top-10. Following a rather interesting and exciting Round 11 at Michigan, Kirwan and his on-track drivers tackle Round 12 of the eNASCAR CocaCola iRacing Series season for the first of two exciting races at Daytona International Speedway on Tuesday, August 11th, 2020, at 9:00 PM ET/8:00 PM CT. NASCAR.com and iRacing’s Twitch channel will live stream the action, this time on the Daytona road course.

Team Ownership Stake On Bargaining Table For NASCAR’s Bubba Wallace
WITH BUBBA WALLACE’S NASCAR FUTURE LOOKING BRIGHT, NASCAR9495 SHARED AN interesting development for the young racer following this season. While Adam Stern shared a notable opportunity for Wallace to join Chip Ganassi with McDonald’s as one of the primary sponsors, evidently, Richard Petty Motorsports is offering some ownership stake to their driver. Considering Wallace’s journey, particularly after a great unknown in mid-2017 and recent events, the potential for Wallace to own a portion of the No. 43 would be massive.

On this day, 10 years ago, Elliott Sadler hit the infield barrier at Pocono Raceway, which knocked the engine out of his car. This became the hardest recorded hit in NASCAR history.
MOST NASCAR FANS OFTEN CALL THIS SAVAGE CRASH AS ONE THAT WAS NOT SHOWN much during the race’s telecast. To say the least, Elliott Sadler was involved in one of the most grinding wrecks in recent NASCAR memory during the summer Pocono race in 2010. When Sadler’s car smashed into the infield barrier, it tore the engine off his car and left a pristine No. 19 car in shambles. dman6233 shared a photo of Sadler’s car after the gruesome crash. 0 3 6

Awesome news : IMSA Added to Bank of America ROVAL 400 #NASCAR Playoff Weekend!
IT’S SOMEWHAT UNDERSTANDABLE TO SAY THAT WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS IN 2020. However, we might buck this trend with the exciting news of IMSA joining the NASCAR race weekend at the Charlotte ROVAL this autumn. Indeed, motorsports, when there’s actual unity and collaboration, can be quite awesome to watch.

Does Dale Earnhardt exist in the Days of Thunder Universe? We don’t see dale and also Michael Rooker is supposed to be playing a person based off of him. Is he canon in the Days Of Thunder Universe?
TO BE FAIR, IT’S SAFE TO WONDER THE SAME THOUGHT AS PETITCHOFLUER. SURE, we know Harry Gant, Rusty Wallace, and Neil Bonnett were integral in Days of Thunder. While the famed No. 3 car shows up a few times, where in the heck was “The Intimidator” with ruffling Cole Trickle?

Any predictions for the rest of the regular season? I see an upset a Daytona RC
WELL, BRICEROMERO28, IT’S ALWAYS FUN TO MAKE PREDICTIONS ABOUT NASCAR Cup Series races. Even if it’s been the Harvick and Hamlin Show since the series’ return following the onset of the pandemic, he has a rather bold pick for the upcoming and unpredictable Daytona Road Course race in two weeks. 0 3 8

TWEETSTORM COMPILED BY ROB TIONGSON
▶▶ While most racing fans recognize Mark Martin as the fitness guru and Gucci Mane fanatic, who remembers the Batesville, Ark. native when he sported the prototype to Jeff Gordon’s mustache in 1981? When C. Bird shared this rare black and white photo of Martin, the very interactive NASCAR Hall of Fame racer had a rather amusing reaction. Upon reflection, it was the start to many incredible moments for the humble but aggressive racer who’d make more noise eight years later. 0 4 0
▶▶ Sticking with the throwback theme, here’s a rather recent historical moment for “The Closer.” Just 14 years ago, Kevin Harvick took the checkered flag at “The Magic Mile” in the somehow forgotten orange and yellow Reese’s Pieces Chevy Monte Carlo. Naturally, race fans were in awe of Harvick’s ride from 2006. Notably, eNASCAR Coca-Cola Series legend Ray Alfalla did not hide his true feelings about the Gen 4 car. It’s incredible realizing how stock cars have changed since that season.

▶▶ It might be said that Jesse Little was feeling true to his school when he wrote an assignment about one of the greatest drivers. Scoring a 95 for writing about Jimmie Johnson, this has folks like the author wondering what epic class is Little taking to cover a fascinating topic?
▶▶ Not only is Kaz Grala an emerging star in the NASCAR XFINTY Series, but he’s a historian-in-waiting. That or he pays attention to stock car races. Interestingly, according to Grala, over 18 percent of the ARCA Menards Series field had the last name “Smith.” Things that make you go hmm.
