HARVICK MAKES HISTORY AT MICHIGAN DOUBLE HEADER In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his race review and analysis of this weekend’s historic double header at Michigan. Kevin Harvick made history as the only driver since Richard Petty to ever win back to back races like he did this weekend at Michigan, and Eric has all the context on what that means. Although both races were utilizing the 550 horsepower package, the track’s recent addition of PJ1 “traction compound” did seem 0 0 4

to play an effect on the racing action this weekend. There was plenty of passing to be found, and Eric explains how exactly Michigan got back to having three lanes of racing - and the overtaking that allows. But that’s not all, of course, as Eric also takes us through the complete finishing order. And what does Eric make of the incident between Ryan Blaney and Brad Keselowski? Find out that and more on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

LESSONS LEARNED AT MICHIGAN A rare doubleheader weekend of racing resulted in a familiar outcome at Michigan International Speedway as Kevin Harvick triumphed on both Saturday and Sunday evening to further solidify his standing as one of two heavy favorites for the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series championship. Finishing second to Harvick on Saturday was Michigan’s native son, Brad Keselowski, while Denny Hamlin — the other championship favorite — claimed runner-up honors on Sunday. Following are five important lessons learned from two action-packed days of on-track activity at the fast 2-mile track located in Michigan’s scenic Irish Hills. BY JA RED TURNER

KEVIN HARVICK & DENNY HAMLIN CONTINUE TO SET THE STANDARD

I

f there’s one thing that’s been consistent throughout the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season it’s the fact that Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin have been the cream of the crop. This continued over the weekend at Michigan where Harvick picked up a pair of victories, the second of which appropriately came on the heels of a late-race battle for the win with Hamlin, who finished just a car length behind in second. Harvick’s six wins on the season are one more than Hamlin’s five, as the two drivers have combined to capture exactly half of the 22 races run to date in 2020. Asked after Sunday’s race about what it’s like to battle Harvick for the victory week-in and week-out, Hamlin made no bones about his feelings. “It’s fun,” he said. “I definitely don’t like not winning, but we’re competitive. We’ve been right there in contention in every race. I think we’ll be right there where we need to be.”

WILLIAM BYRON’S BUBBLE CUSHION REMAINS TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT

W

ith only four races to go before the NASCAR Cup Series playoff field is locked in, William Byron is clinging to the 16th and final spot after a solid but unspectacular weekend at Michigan allowed him to add to his points buffer over his closest pursuers. Byron’s buffer is now 26 points — a still too-close-for-comfort advantage he holds over both teammate Jimmie Johnson and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Erik Jones. Next up is the first ever Cup race on the Daytona International Speedway road course, which presents a great unknown for not only Byron but the entire field of drivers. “Hard fought day for us at Michigan today and this weekend overall, really,” Byron said after finishing 12th on Sunday — two spots better than Saturday. “After this weekend, we came out of Michigan with a bit larger of a points gap than we started, which is good. Hopefully, we can go on to the road course at Daytona and keep building that point buffer.”

BRAD KESELOWSKI’S HOMECOMING PARTY ONCE AGAIN WASN’T MEANT TO BE

O

ne of these days, Rochester, Hills Michigan native Brad Keselowski is finally going to win a NASCAR Cup Series race in his home state. It won’t happen in 2020, however. After finishing a close second to Kevin Harvick on Saturday at Michigan, Keselowski was in the hunt once again on Sunday before losing control of his No. 2 Team Penske Ford while he and teammate Ryan Blaney raced hard for the lead. The end of result was both drivers crashing and Keselowski leaving his home track empty-handed for the 23rd time in his career. “I just lost it,” Keselowski said of his wreck. “It’s my fault. I feel really bad for my teammate, Ryan Blaney. He didn’t deserve that. I lost the back a little bit and when I went to collect it, he was there, and I wiped him out and myself out, so I feel terrible for everyone at Team Penske and especially Ryan Blaney.”

DESPITE NOT WINNING, JGR HAD A BIG WEEKEND

J

oe Gibbs Racing went 0-for-2 at Michigan, but the weekend was hardly a loss for the organization. In Saturday’s race, JGR placed three of its drivers in the top six and all four of its drivers in the top 11 at the checkered flag. Then, on Sunday, JGR drivers finished 2-3-4 behind Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick. Leading the JGR driver charge Sunday was second-place finisher Denny Hamlin, followed by third-place Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch in fourth. “The one takeaway is we have strong race teams, strong race cars,” said Truex, who finished third on both Saturday and Sunday. “We’re all pretty well-rounded as far as being able to run good everywhere. I think momentum is important. For us to be consistently running in the top three is, again, what it’s all about. Our plan is to try to do what we did last year: put three or four of us in the final four, see if we can go race for it.”

KEVIN HARVICK CAN DO NO WRONG IN 2020

A

lready enjoying a dream season, Kevin Harvick continued his magical run through 2020 by sweeping the two races in Michigan International Speedway’s first ever NASCAR Cup Series doubleheader. By virtue of winning on both Saturday and Sunday, Harvick now leads NASCAR’s top division in victories this season — with six — and has positioned himself to be the No. 1 seed if the Cup Series playoffs commenced today. In scoring two convincing victories over the weekend at Michigan, Harvick has now prevailed in three consecutive races and four of the last five races at the 2-mile track. With his win on Sunday, Harvick now has 55 career Cup wins — tied with Rusty Wallace for 10th on the all-time win list and one victory ahead of NASCAR Hall of Famer Lee Petty. In another note of historical significance, Harvick became the first driver since seventime champion Richard Petty — Lee’s son — in 1971 to secure victories on back-to-back days at the Cup level.

ERIK JONES GOT A RAW DEAL

Since joining Joe Gibbs Racing’s NASCAR Cup Series program ahead of 2018, Erik Jones has earned two victories and made the playoffs in each of his two full seasons with the organization. So why did JGR announce last week that Jones was being released from his ride at the end of 2020? Simply put: This decision has nothing to do with Jones and everything to do with Christopher Bell, who just became a free agent. The powers that be at JGR have decided — rightly or wrongly — that Bell is a better long-term prospect than Jones. Maybe they’re right, but Jones is no slouch — and he has the results to back it up. I hope Jones lands on his feet. He deserved better than this. JA RED TURNER ▶▶ Shorter Races are Worth a Shot Sunday’s race at Michigan was the shortest of the season, lasting a shade over two hours and nine minutes. In fact, Sunday’s race was the shortest non-rain abbreviated event since 2017. So was the race TOO short? While reasonable minds will differ on the ideal duration of a NASCAR Cup Series race, less is truly more oftentimes — especially in an age when people’s attention spans seem to be getting shorter by the day. Here’s hoping for more races of a similar length in the future. Hey, it’s at least worth a shot, right?

■■ Crew chief Chris Gayle and Erik Jones, driver of the No. 20 STANLEY Toyota, talk on the grid prior to the NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway

▶▶ Keep it Simple with Race Lineups Beginning this weekend, the starting grid for the NASCAR Cup Series will be set based on three obscure factors rather than a simple random draw — the method used most often this season to determine the starting order. My question, though, is why complicate things if the random draw procedure is working and everyone seems pretty satisfied with it? And to change it in the middle of a season makes it even more of a head-scratcher. I know NASCAR loves to change things up, but for once, why not keep it simple? 0 1 8

IN THE HOT SEAT

IN THE HOT SEAT

Graham Bowlin BY ROB TIONGSON

▶▶ How do you feel about your chances for a win and securing your Playoff spot? I think I have a good shot at making the playoffs. I have good tracks for me coming up and I think if I keep the same speed every week, the only thing that can stop me is myself. ▶▶ One of the great unknowns for you and the whole NASCAR world is the Daytona road course. What do you anticipate with this race and how have you prepared for it? I anticipate an exciting race to watch and a good way to see how it is gonna race in real life next week. To prepare for the Coke Series takes a lot of time and effort. I have a group of people that I do setups with including Dustin Lengert, Huston Hamer, and some of my competitors I work on setups with. On average this summer, I’ve done 20-25 hours in preparation for each race. We have a spec chassis and engine in iRacing but everything else can be changed and tweaked. ▶▶ If iRacing held a “Graham Bowling Appreciation Day” for you and your fans, which musicians or bands would you invite to perform for you? Post Malone! His music is amazing. And he seems like a pretty chill dude. I’d have him perform it at a bowling alley. ▶▶ How special is it to race in front of new fans and audiences this year? Incredible! I think it gives people who didn’t have the real-life opportunities a chance to showcase their skills and maybe have a shot at racing in real life. It’s great having a fan base for this series and drivers. It’s growing at incredible rates and I only see good things coming to the series!

Happy 49th birthday to Jeff Gordon!

TIME FLIES BY WHEN ONE REMEMBERS JEFF GORDON’S NICKNAME BEING “Wonderboy” and “The Kid.” Last Tuesday, Gordon turned 49 years old but it’s safe to say that he looks forward to turning 50 with the way 2020 has treated everyone. Nevertheless, NatsuruHelpMe and other Reddit NASCAR fans expressed some love and praise for the fourtime Cup champion. While some wondered if Gordon deserves the title of G.O.A.T., he truly pushed NASCAR into the mainstream spotlight during his sterling driving career.

WHO DOESN’T LOVE A GAME THAT LETS FANS ESCAPE INTO THE RACING WORLD? NAS160 shared a link to Ally Racing’s browser-based game in which fans can drive Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Chevy Camaro. It’s safe to say that it’s addicting and a great way to pass the quarantine time away. 0 3 0

TWEETSTORM COMPILED BY ROB TIONGSON

▶▶ Who needs media outlets when Chase Briscoe did a respectable job serving as an ESPN SportsCenter highlight reel with his tweet? OK, please don’t take that literally, but Briscoe did a poetic job summing up his day at Road America. Sure, his race didn’t get off to a good start with a tight handling car but once the rain soaked up the mammoth road course, Briscoe rallied back to a podium finish. Did I mention he wished it rained more?

▶▶ For those in North Carolina, Bigfoot didn’t make his presence known to wake folks up on Sunday morning. Actually, it turns out that a 5.1 earthquake took place around the Sparta, N.C. region. Evidently, those tremors were felt as far south as Charlotte in which the affable Dale Earnhardt Jr took to Twitter with his observation. Interestingly, according to North Carolina’s official website, only 22 earthquakes caused damage in The Tar Heel State since 1735 prior to Sunday’s rare event.

▶▶ In the Navy, yes you can drive a stock car numbered 13. In the Navy, Jesse Iwuji drove quite respectably. OK fans - don’t blame me if I got a truly awesome disco song stuck in your head. In all seriousness, Iwuji’s NASCAR XFINITY Series debut was efficient and clean.

▶▶ As our focus shifts to the relatively unknowns awaiting at the Daytona road course, Evan Posocco shared a piece about the 10 drivers to watch for Tuesday night’s eNASCAR race. With no cautions set for this event, it ought to be an interesting for the likes of driver Bobby Zalenski. 0 3 4

▶▶ It’s incredible to think how these two icons changed the NASCAR landscape after a chance start in the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Rockingham in 1990. Nearly 30 years later, Ray Evernham took the time to tweet his birthday wishes to Jeff Gordon, his best bud and adopted little brother.
