JOEY LOGANO HAS SOME ADVICE FOR ERIK JONES In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all of the big storylines, silly season and otherwise, leading into this weekend’s races at Daytona. Erik Jones and Noah Gragson are both making headlines this week, but for very different reasons, and Joey Logano has some advice for Jones sans the No. 20. But first up, Eric tackles the Michael Jordan rumors head on. Whispers have swirled around 0 0 4
Bubba Wallace and Richard Petty Motorsports for weeks, hinting at celebrity investors, team changes, and more, with the most talked about being that none other than Michael Jordan was that celebrity investor. Eric takes us through the truth of the situation. Lastly, Eric has some thoughts on the recent rumblings out of Noah Gragson. What do we think that mysterious pen emoji was all about? What has he signed, and is he even ready for

THINGS TO WATCH AT DAYTONA It’s all come down to this. One race. One last chance. Simply put: For the drivers yet to solidify a berth in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, Saturday night’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 under the lights at Daytona International Speedway is game time — and there’s no telling what all might transpire. Following are five things to watch for this weekend at the fabled 2.5-mile superspeedway known as The World Center of Racing, which for the first time ever is hosting the final race of the NASCAR Cup Series’ regular season. THE NUMBERS GAME
W
ith one race left to lock into the 16-driver playoff grid, no ambiguity exists as to whom 13 of the playoff drivers will be. The trio currently in position to make the playoffs but still with work to do on Saturday night at Daytona are Clint Bowyer (57 points to the plus side of the playoff cutline), Matt DiBenedetto (+9) and William Byron (+4). Jimmie Johnson (4 points below the cutline) and Erik Jones (-50) are the only two drivers who could move into the playoff picture on the basis of points. Any driver besides Johnson and Jones who is on the wrong side of the cutline must win to get in. The most race points a driver can make up in one event is 59. “We’re going to Daytona where it’s going to be insane,” Byron said. “I don’t think you can really points race. It’s going to be a race to be as aggressive as you can and hope things fall your way.”

THE ALMOST INEVITABLE ‘BIG ONE’
W
hile nothing is a sure thing in this world anymore — especially in 2020 — there’s a good chance there will be one or more major multi-car wrecks, perhaps even of the more frightening variety, on Saturday night at Daytona. In fact, you can just about count it. As if the NASCAR Cup Series’ superspeedway aero package and the close-quarters, three- and fourwide racing bred by Daytona’s high banks weren’t enough to make things ripe for the “Big One,” the likelihood of multiple melees is increased exponentially by the simple fact that it’s the regular season finale. “This Daytona race is going to be pretty nerve-wracking,” said rookie Cole Custer, one of the drivers who has already punched a ticket to the playoffs. “The playoff cutoff line is there so that adds a lot of tension. It’s a really crazy, unpredictable race, anyway, so it might be tough for some guys to go into it with their head screwed on straight, if you will.”

SCORES LEFT TO SETTLE
artin Truex Jr. left Dover last weekend miffed at Aric Almirola. Kurt Busch left the Monster Mile less than pleased with Erik Jones. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. left Dover not so happy with Joey Logano. Notice a theme here? Multiple drivers departed Delaware and headed back home to Charlotte on less than stellar terms with a fellow competitor. What does all this mean for Saturday night’s race at Daytona? Maybe not a whole lot. But race car drivers don’t easily forget the perceived injustices done against them, and only six days will have passed between Dover’s twin-bill and when the engines fire this weekend. While Daytona, with its dangerously high speeds, isn’t a place where drivers are normally prone to exact any kind of revenge, drafting partners play a key role in the outcome. Don’t look for any of the three drivers who felt they were done wrong at Dover to go out of their way to help the guy they deemed responsible for their setback.

DRIVERS GOING FOR BROKE
C
ome what may on Saturday night at Daytona, all but three spots are already settled in the 16-driver NASCAR Cup Series playoff field from which a champion will be crowned. Of the 13 drivers locked in, 10 are guaranteed playoff berths by virtue of winning at least one race this season, and three are in based on the number of points they’ve accrued in the season’s first 25 races. Jimmie Johnson and Erik Jones — both currently on the wrong side of the playoff cutline — have a mathematical chance to advance without winning, but Jones’ points deficit to bubble man William Byron makes that possibility highly unlikely. All this makes for an intriguingly high-stakes scenario for a little less than three-fourths of the field because those drivers’ only hope of reaching the playoffs is winning the race. To what lengths will a driver go to win on Saturday night if he can’t make the playoffs any other way? Buckle up and stay tuned.

JIMMIE JOHNSON’S LAST SHOT — FOR REAL THIS TIME
T
his past weekend’s doubleheader at Dover seemed like the perfect opportunity for Jimmie Johnson to end his lengthy drought and put to rest any doubts about making the playoffs in his final full season. Instead, Johnson heads into Saturday night’s final race of the regular season as the first driver on the wrong side of the playoff cutline. The seven-time series champion still stands a good chance of advancing, however, considering that he’s only four points to the negative of his bubble-sitting teammate, William Byron. So what is Johnson’s strategy for doing what he needs to do this weekend at Daytona to make the playoffs and have a shot at a record-breaking eighth championship? “Studying, worrying — any of that isn’t going to make a difference,” Johnson said. “So we go down there, say a few prayers, maybe say a prayer per lap and see how that plays, out I guess. We’ll race hard, and if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.”

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER
■■ Jimmie Johnsonand crew chief Chad Knaus celebrate in victory lane after winning during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AAA 400.
THE LIFE OF THE PARTY KNAUS AND JOHNSON DOMINATE POCONO BY JA RED TURNER
J
immie Johnson has enjoyed quite a few dominant performances during his NASCAR Cup Series career. Few have been more dominant than the one he delivered at the Party in the Poconos 400 on June 9, 2013. Starting from the pole in his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet prepared by veteran crew chief Chad Knaus, Johnson led 128 of 160 laps around the 2.5-mile Pocono Raceway en route to a convincing victory that was his third Pocono win but first at the triangular shaped Pennsylvania track in nine years. “A great race car, clearly,” Johnson said post-race. “I mean, that car had a ton of speed in it, and not only the car, but I think our engine really had a chance to shine today. The configuration here and the fact that we’re able to shift (gears), our engine shop works really hard to make that power, and today it showed.” Knaus, not surprisingly, was in an equally buoyant mood at day’s end. “That was a lot of fun,” he said. “I really love this racetrack. It’s always been one of my favorites. When you come up here, you
0 1 8

have to have so many elements to have a successful race. … When we showed up here on Friday, we realized we had a very fast race car, and that was nice. When you have a fast car, that obviously makes the rest of the race a little bit easier. It was a great race.” If Johnson had any concern at all, it was conserving fuel. Historically, Pocono is one of the tracks where outcomes are prone to be influenced by who can stretch a tank of gas. Once Johnson knew he was good on fuel, it was pretty smooth sailing. “I’d say second or third pit stop, we really nailed the setup,” he said. “It’s not like we were very far off to start with, because we were leading, but we dialed it in and got it right for the conditions at hand and made it happen.”

Jeff Gordon BY ROB TIONGSON
0 2 0
Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, as a preview for a special project, he talks with Jeff Gordon, NASCAR Hall of Famer and four-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion. ▶▶ In 1990, you test drove at the Buck Baker Driving School, and made your first Xfinity Series start with Hugh Connerty in the No. 67 Outback car at Rockingham. How incredible were those experiences with you taking on a new racing series after having all the open wheel and dirt track experience? That’s the beauty of where I sit now. My driving career is pretty much behind me and now I get to see the sport through the lens of a commentator or partner at Hendrick Motorsports. I get to reflect on this amazing career that I had. And when I went into the Hall of Fame, that was one of my favorite things, going back through all these experiences that got me there to that place, and those ones that you mentioned, those were such big moments for a young driver trying to break into it. And you have these opportunities that you don’t know where it’s going to take you but you gotta seize the moment. And I was so fortunate to get those opportunities and seize those moments. One thing led to another and that led to another and the whole thing just snowballed. And it’s just amazing to me that, even today I’m blown away that I had the career that I had and things like sitting on the outside front row at Rockingham with Hugh Connerty and Ray Evernham, that that even happened. That the midget sprint car races that taught me so much and gave me those opportunities and meeting Rick Hendrick and all of that. It’s just, you couldn’t script it or repeat it if you tried it and you had to do it all over again. It’s amazing. And now I get to look back and smile and enjoy what kind of career that created because of those moments.

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ When you were starting off in NASCAR, before you got to Cup, who were some of the drivers that you’d say made you feel like you were at home or welcomed as much as possible? In the very first test that I did with Hugh Connerty and Ray Evernham, we were in a Pontiac. Chuck Bown, I think, was the defending champion, if I’m not mistaken, or he was leading the points that year is maybe what it was. But, we were trying to get up to speed, not 100 percent comfortable, and I don’t know who it was if it was Ray or who asked Chuck if he would drive the car and so he did. He came over, and I’ve had some problems with the bumps getting into three and just a little bit unsure of how far I could take the car into the corner there. And he drove the car and man, it just showed me what that car was capable of and that it would stick and gave me confidence. And all of a sudden, I went out there and was right up to speed and maybe went a little faster than Chuck did in the car after that. So that was pretty cool. I always liked Chuck. He’s a great guy, just really humble, but a great race car driver. I can’t say I was real, real close to him, but I was thankful in that moment. But then after that, I would say Kenny Wallace and Bobby Labonte, who I ended up being rookie with in Cup later, but those are guys I raced with and got to know in the XFINITY Series, or Busch Grand National back then, and we had some good times. So those guys stand out also. 0 2 2

IN THE HOTSEAT ▶▶ I know Blacker was your car, but you also had a car called Butthead, and I kind of imagined that’s from Bevis and Butthead from MTV. Whose idea was it to come up with that car’s name and what made it your car to go to when you went to the short track races in the late 90s? Well, you’re tied to a race car, especially back then, right? They didn’t build cars as identical as they do today. You’d take it to the track, and it was either really good, or it was really bad. ■■ Ray Evernham, crew chief for the #24 Hendrick Motorsports Du Pont Chevrolet talking with Jeff during the1998 Southern 500
0 2 4
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: AUGUST 28, 2020
When you got a really good one, you wanted to have that car every weekend, if you could. So, Ray’s probably the guy to ask of what made that car stand out versus others in its build, chassis, and body. But the names, that all came from the guys in the shop and Ray Evernham, and he would motivate them. And as they’re building these cars, the cars have their own personality, and some are finicky and just give you problems such as “Butthead.” There are others like “Blazer” because it caught on fire when they were doing some welding or something on the car! And so, all I know is that they decided they wanted to have the cars all start with B’s and be called the Killer B’s. But that was all Ray and the guys in the shop. I went along with it and was happy to drive those cars, but I didn’t really have a lot of input on the names.

▶▶ You’ve mentioned in the past that you evaluate your performances in past telecasts to improve upon your calls and analysis, be it in the booth or when you were calling races in the studio. But in some ways, how similar has it been to prepare for telecasts as it was for you in your NASCAR career driving the No. 24 car? It’s very similar. Obviously, the most natural thing for me was driving a race car, getting behind the wheel and competing. But, the preparation was what you had to work so hard at, especially in the last four or five years, as teams had more access to data. They were gathering more information of our car and our performance as well as other competitors out there. So, that really got ramped up in the way you met with the team and engineers, and that’s very much what 0 2 6
it’s like working for FOX and doing TV. You’re working with your producer and director and the team behind the scenes, and the other commentators and pit reporters, and all of that. It’s just one big team. So, you’re constantly trying to follow what the latest stories are, how the flow of the race is going to go, what to expect, what to be prepared for, and then once they drop the green, it’s no different than a race. It’s live and you gotta be in sync, and you’ve got no idea what you’re going to say, what’s going to come next, so that part of it, all of that really is very, very similar to a race, to competing, other than your risk taking is with your words going on the air versus, you know, being in a heated battle, making contact with the wall, having a tire failure, or something like a crash.

JIMMY SPENCER WINS FIRST CUP RACE AT DAYTONA BY ROB TIONGSON
N
o matter if it’s in the cool, inviting weather of February or the sweltering humidity of July, NASCAR Cup Series drivers desire a win at Daytona. In the case of 37-year-old Jimmy Spencer of Berwick, Pa., he was one of those racers seeking for Daytona immortality on July 2nd, 1994. While “Mr. Excitement” was enduring a somewhat middling season one top-five and two top-10’s after 14 races, he possessed the raw and uncanny ability to wheel it at NASCAR’s mammoth superspeedways. Although Spencer crashed out after 79 laps into the Daytona 500, the burly racer showcased potential and promise in the Winston Select 500 at Talladega. Starting fifth and leading 14 laps, the cagey veteran placed a respectable fourth behind Dale Earnhardt, Ernie Irvan, and Michael Waltrip. 0 3 4

To say the least, Spencer and his No. 27 McDonald’s Ford team, owned by legendary driver and car owner Junior Johnson, couldn’t wait for the 400-miler at Daytona in July. Qualifying in the third position in the 43-car field, Spencer bided his time although he showcased some of that on-track aggression. However, that willingness to wheel and wrestle his Ford during a rather hot and humid early July afternoon was to his advantage. Meanwhile, his fellow Ford Racing comrade, Ernie Irvan, was arguably the class of the field. Irvan, the Cup Series points leader and driver of Robert Yates’ No. 28 Texaco/Havoline Ford, was just bad to the bone fast around Daytona. While Irvan led 86 of the 160 laps, he had some formidable challengers like Dale Earnhardt, Mark Martin, Ken Schrader, Geoffrey Bodine, and Jeff Gordon. Certainly, as the usual challengers duked it out with Irvan, the bold and aggressive Spencer was ready to attack at a whim’s notice. One of the most defining moments of the 1994 400-miler at Daytona was the ensuing Lap 124 restart. As Gordon, who recently won his first career Cup race in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, led the way, Earnhardt, Irvan, and Spencer timed their plan of attack quite efficiently. On Lap 132, Earnhardt scooted past Gordon, shuffling “The

START RUN STORE Wonderkid” towards the bottom half of the top-10. However, this race wouldn’t belong to “The Intimidator” as Irvan jostled by him to take the lead on Lap 134. Seemingly in command of the final 27 laps of this race, Irvan was ready to avenge his bitter Daytona 500 defeat. All told, the Californian had a rather pesky challenger lurking behind him in the waning moments. This time, Irvan had to battle with Spencer and the bold, red No. 27 Ford Thunderbird. Almost mirroring the duel between Cole Trickle and Russ Wheeler from Days of Thunder, Irvan might’ve been in the lead but Spencer embraced his role as the hunter. During the final five laps, Spencer kept building tremendous runs on Irvan by running the high line around Daytona. On the other hand, Irvan preferred the shortest route around the 2.5-mile superspeedway, opting for the inside, as both drivers dueled like a bunch of heavyweight boxers. When both drivers took the white flag, Spencer continued to run the high line in Turns 1 and 2 while Irvan protected the inside. In brilliant fashion, Spencer used the momentum built off running the high line off Turn 2 to swing towards the inside of Irvan on the backstretch. From Turn 3 to the start/finish line, Spencer and Irvan’s cars traded paint as both drivers refused to relinquish their bid for the win. At the

MEMORY LANE stripe, Spencer edged Irvan by just 0.008 seconds, an incredibly small margin for the Keystone State native’s first Cup win. “Junior (Johnson) never gave up on me,” Spencer said following his Daytona win. “And I never gave up on him and on driving. Ernie Irvan drove a helluva race. My guys never give up and neither did I. I’ve got to thank the McDonald’s crew, the McDonald’s owners and operators, and everybody who helped me out on my career. Thank you.” All things considered, while Spencer was known to be brash and outspoken, the fan favorite was humble and gracious on this afternoon. “We touched good,” Spencer recalled. “I mean, heck, we’re racing to win! Ernie gave me enough room and I’ve got to thank him for that. My car was real free on the top of racetrack and his car was real loose on the bottom. He gave me enough room, I got a shot at him on the backstraightaway, we touched, and I come out on top. Thank you for a clean race!” 0 3 8
Ultimately, while Spencer prevailed, Irvan was classy in defeat, giving praise and kudos to his sneaky but spirited Ford racer. “It’s an important race and our car was strong all day,” Irvan said. “Jimmy came up there in the end and I didn’t know how strong he was until he kept running high. I didn’t think he’d get a good run on me, and he made a picture perfect move in the end. “I didn’t think he’d go by in the inside. He needed that long shot on the high side. He had a great car today and that’s his first win. My hats off to Jimmy on doing a good job and he led the most important lap - the last lap.” Despite some tough finishes at the Cup Series’ next two stops at Loudon and Pocono, Spencer duplicated his Daytona dream by scoring his second and final Cup Series win at Talladega just 22 days later. For a man who’s often remembered for his sayings, one that’s applicable to his 1994 superspeedway magic is that “Jimmy Spencer never forgets” and neither do race fans.

or fans desiring the experience and thrills of a NASCAR race with the excitement of a Las Vegas slot machine, the Wizits team has the perfect answer. Wizits, a mobile gaming app company based in Tel Aviv, Israel, will integrate NASCAR racing with Win Vegas, its popular slot machine app. Starting with this Saturday night’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona, race fans and gaming enthusiasts can pursue their dreams of becoming a NASCAR champion from the comfort of

their home. Yair Panet, the CoFounder and Chief Risk Officer of Wizits, wanted to expand upon the thrills of NASCAR with the fastpaced experiences of a slot machine. “We love slot machines and that’s the focus of Win Vegas,” Panet said. “We saw that one of the most popular features in slot machines is races. These races were being done in a way that does not necessarily show a proper race. And players are looking for that competitive element, even when they are playing a casual, social slot machine. “When we saw that there is a lot of the same people that like NASCAR who also like slot machines, we realized that this kind of integration was working very well. When we put the focus on the race and combine it with all the excitement of a NASCAR race, we really believe that could be a very good fit.” Gamers will get to compete in a unique, 12-week experience that’ll make them feel like their stock car heroes with Win Vegas. In fact, the

app will follow along with the final 10 races of the NASCAR Cup Series season. “The NASCAR races will be split into four stages,” Panet said. “Each stage will present new types of races and the races will change. They will present NASCAR races such as the first one at Daytona. The idea is that NASCAR is a living and moving thing and we want to bring those experiences of an actual season. The race will be real race, but the actual stages will be on a biweekly schedule.” The thrill and passion of competition will 0 4 2
be prevalent with the Win Vegas app. In fact, the app will feature four NASCAR-branded slot machines, a NASCAR Upgrade Shop to enhance their virtual stock car, and the NASCAR Car Race, the main gameplay feature. With these features, Panet illustrates how the Win Vegas app will recreate the magic and joy that NASCAR presents to fans and gamers alike. “For us, for me personally, the most exciting part is the NASCAR Car Race and that’s really the heart of NASCAR and the

But the race is really the experience that’s most important. We have a race that is exciting and brings the NASCAR feel into players.” Ultimately, Panet and the Wizits team look forward to fans and gamers experiencing the rush of NASCAR racing with the Win Vegas app. 0 4 4
“Our apps are worldwide and a lot of players outside of the US will get better acquainted with NASCAR,” Panet said. “There’s a great opportunity there. For us, it’s exciting to partner with such a huge and amazing brand. I cannot say how humbled we are to be working on this. It’s a great opportunity for both sides. For us, we have a diverse set of apps, so we have a lot of different players around the world who like different games. In that sense, that is great.”

DRIVER Q&A
CLINT BOWYER IS READY TO END 2020 ON A HIGH NOTE BY JOSEPH WOLK IN
No one is more excited for the final stint of the NASCAR season than Stewart-Haas Racing’s Clint Bowyer. The driver of the No. 14 car’s status for 2021 and beyond is uncertain, and that means the pressure is on. Pressure is what drives him to succeed, and he’s geared up for the playoffs. ▶ HOW HAS THE SEASON BEEN FOR YOU LEADING UP TO THE PLAYOFFS? “Pre-COVID, we were rolling right along just like I was expecting it to and needed it to. COVID was a pain in the butt. I got behind the Eight Ball with the qualifying draw and not having practice. It took me two months to get out of the hole. Over the last couple of weeks, things have been rolling right along and we started getting some stage points.”
■■ Clint Bowyer is seeking his first Cup Series championship.
▶ WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON? “It’s simple, bud. Win races. When’s the best time to win a race? The next one. When’s the best time to sell a car? Right after you just got done selling one. Go win a race and win more. That’s what makes our world go round and round. We haven’t done that yet, but we’re getting closer. We’ve got to win a race, and once you do that, it’s all about winning the championship. I’ve won races, I won an XFINITY championship, but the end all prize is that Cup championship. It’s one I’ll be chasing until they say it’s time to get out.” 0 4 6

ike Drews loves nothing more than being at the track in person and taking in the scenes. He’s done that with three generations of NASCAR fans -- first with his father in the 1970s, then with his wife in the 80s and 90s, and now with his 24-year-old daughter. As an original member of the Original NASCAR Members Club, Drews has experienced plenty of moments that have taken his breath away at the track. “What I like is having the tours,” Drews said. “I moved down to Florida in 1979, and I’ve only missed two races at Daytona since. We’ve been to Speedweeks every year. I know it’s race season when I’m in Daytona in February going on an annual tour.” Drew shared some memories from his ONMC membership in a recent interview.
0 5 0
▶ HOW DID YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH THE SPORT? “I followed it in the early 1970s when I lived in Rochester, N.Y. During Speedweeks, my dad would decide to pick up and drive down to Daytona. I liked Davey Allison, and he became a personal friend. I was in Victory Lane when Hendrick Motorsports went 1-2-3 with Jeff Gordon getting the win. I got to know Jeff and Ray Evernham very well.” ▶ WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES OF BEING IN THE CLUB? “I love going down to Daytona each year and getting to see the new cars. I was in the garage when they were testing Goodyear tires at Daytona and got to know Davey Allison and his crew. I became good friends with Larry McReynolds. It’s just the idea of getting in the garage during testing. Once a year, I take a tour when the new race season is here.” ▶ DO YOU BRING GUESTS TO RACES WITH YOU? “I used to go with my Dad. I’ve been married since 1986, so I went with my wife for a long time. Robert Yates hooked us up one year with garage passes. Dale Jarrett once invited my wife and I to Ford after he got sponsored. I started taking my daughter as a baby. I have pictures of me holding her in the garage. Dale Jr. saw her at a race once and brought her a set of ear plugs. I used to bring rum cakes for the drivers when I had a business. One year, Kenny Schroeder kept seeing my daughter give a thumbs up to drivers along the fence. He picked her up and brought her to the trailer to meet his crew chief, who had a daughter around the same age.”

here’s a saying that the more things change, the more they stay the same, a maxim that proved true on Tuesday night at the virtual Daytona International Speedway. Similar to Round 12 at Daytona’s road course, the eNASCAR CocaCola iRacing Series field likely felt a bit of déjà vu when Bobby Zalenski scored the pole for the 13th race of the 2020 season. Starting alongside the cool Californian was Logan Clampitt in the No. 99 entry fielded by Jeff Burton and Parker Kligerman. As the field took the green flag, the intensity was on from the onset of this 100-lap event. On Lap 4, Blake Reynolds and Matt Bussa made a bit of an off-road excursion on the frontstretch grass. However, trouble brewed on Lap 22 when a multi car accident curtailed the efforts of Justin Bolton, Ryan Luza, Ray Alfalla, Michael Conti, and Jimmy Mullis, among others.

IRACING Taking to Twitter after failing to meet minimum speed, Conti tweeted that it “sucks to get destroyed so early. I think we had a solid No. 8 WR1 machine tonight, but never got to show it. We’ll see where points shake out, but this definitely hurts.” Disappointed and dejected, Alfalla remarked how his Daytona debacle reminded him of being “back to 2019 form” but looked forward to Darlington. All evening long, threewide racing was quite commonplace at “The World Center of Racing” although Zalenski and Nick Ottinger drove the two strongest cars of the race. Following a crash that ruined the evenings of Chris Overland and Jake Nichols, the remaining contenders were prepared for a 20-lap dash for Daytona glory. While Zalenski was in the catbird’s seat, his challengers raced in three to four-wide formation, all focused on trying to make a final attack for the win. When it came time for the final lap, Zalenski had his 0 5 4
work cut out for him as Caine Cook and Eric J. Smith were set for a Daytona upset. Despite tremendous runs on the outside lanes, Zalenski had enough car to defeat Smith and Cook in incredibly close fashion. Excited and jubilant, Zalenski scored his seventh career eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series win and his first on a superspeedway. Hot mic or not, the road course specialist was thrilled to finally win at Daytona. “Our record this year at Daytona was just crazy,” Zalenski said on his Twitter. “I’m just happy to win an oval race for the first time in forever. Hope y’all enjoyed the show!”

Apologizing for a bit of an oops moment following his win, Zalenski praised his team and his competitor, Chris Shearburn, on the work put forth on the superspeedway races. Meanwhile, Smith, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday night, said, “So thankful to have the support of friends and family on my birthday and came just a few feet of getting the big birthday present. Thanks again to Chris Overland, Slip Angle Motorsports, and Jim Beaver eSports.” Zalenski, as a result of his second win of 2020, returns to the points lead while Keegan Leahy, Garrett Lowe, Ryan Luza, and Michael 0 5 6

Smith by a narrow 0.029 second margin, Zack Novak, Corey Vincent, Bob Bryant, Nick Ottinger, Logan Clampitt, Matt Bussa, Alex McCollum, and Caine Cook rounded out the top-10. With Round 13 wrapping up the Daytona double, Zalenski and his sim racing colleagues look forward to Round 14 of the eNASCAR CocaCola iRacing Series season at Darlington Raceway on Tuesday, September 8th, 2020, at 9:00 PM ET/8:00 PM CT.
