ERIC REACTS TO 2020 NASCAR THROWBACK SCHEMES In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all of the Darlington throwback paint schemes, plus gives us his review of the best and worst of the pack. Jimmie Johnson’s “7x7x7x” champions throwback, featuring tributes to both Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt, certainly got most of the public’s attention, but there were quite a few more notables. The rest of Team Hendrick all are running a variation of Jimmie Johnson’s championship colors. In fact, this year’s throwback theme 0 0 4
seemed to be somewhat self referential, with everyone throwing back to themselves from years prior. The earliest prize certainly goes to Permatex, throwing all the way back to the prehistory of NASCAR, to 1938. Others weren’t as impressive, and Eric gives us his take on those. Which scheme landed as his best of the year? What about the NERF throwback, or Harvick’s nod to the old Busch series? And what does Eric think are the most disappointing? Check out the latest episode of Out of the Groove to find out!

THINGS TO WATCH AT DARLINGTON Let the games begin. For the first in the history of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, Darlington Raceway is set to host the opening event of the season-ending 10-race stretch, and it all gets started with Sunday’s Cook Out Southern 500 at the fabled 1.366-mile Darlington oval. In this most unusual year, drivers will compete here for the third time after doing so twice in the month of May upon returning from a more than two-month-long hiatus necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Following are five things to watch for on Sunday night. BY JA RED TURNER

A MORE AT EASE ARIC ALMIROLA & WILLIAM BYRON
I
f Aric Almirola and William Byron both seem a bit more at peace this weekend, it’s not just because they are in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. It’s also because they both received the good news earlier in the week that they will be back with their respective teams in 2021. Almirola, whose contract with Stewart-Haas Racing was set to expire at season’s end, inked a 1-year extension with SHR; Byron — fresh off his first career NASCAR Cup Series victory last Saturday night at Daytona — reupped with Hendrick Motorsports through 2022. “Aric has done a really good job, him and Mike (Bugarewicz, crew chief) of growing together as a team and figuring out what he likes,” said Greg Zipadelli, SHR’s vice president of competition. “Buga has done a great job at that, but it’s time to go. They’ve been picking up and building their confidence, and I feel like they’re ready; they just have to go out and execute.”

THROWBACK PAINT SCHEMES
F
or each of past five years, Darlington Raceway has turned its annual Labor Day weekend event into a celebration of the sport’s past. The tradition continues this weekend as the track “Too Tough To Tame” celebrates “NASCAR’s Champions...Past, Present and Future” and “New Traditions...First Race of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs” for its 2020 throwback campaign. As is always the case for Darlington’s throwback weekend, a variety of retro-style paint schemes will be on display. This year’s old-school designs include Kevin Harvick’s Busch Beer Throwback scheme paying tribute to his 2001 and 2006 championships in what was then known as the NASCAR Busch (now Xfinity) Series. Meanwhile, Jimmie Johnson will pay homage to NASCAR legends Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty with a paint scheme centered around Earnhardt’s classic No. 3 ride and Petty’s iconic No. 43. The three men are the sport’s only seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champions. In recognition of this, Johnson also will sport a “7x7x7” sticker on his Chevrolet.

UNDERDOGS GOING FOR BROKE
O
f the 16 playoff drivers, it’s not hard to find the heavyweights and those with at least a semi-reasonable chance of making a deep playoff run and contending for the championship. It’s also not hard to identify the underdogs. Included among the latter group are Austin Dillon, Cole Custer, Aric Almirola, Alex Bowman, Matt DiBenedetto and Clint Bowyer. For these drivers, who face long odds of making it to the season-ending race at Phoenix as part of the Championship 4, there’s really no reason to do anything less than go for broke. “Our strategy is to win, simple as that,” said Bowyer, who didn’t reach Victory Lane in the season’s first 26 races. “What a great time it would be for a win! We did that in 2010, won the first race in the playoffs. It’s a great way to set the tone for the whole playoff run. We ran really well the last time we were in Darlington. … We feel very confident.”

POTENTIAL PLAYOFF SPOILERS
W
hile most of the attention this weekend will be on the 16 drivers who make up the NASCAR Cup Series playoff grid, over half of the field will consist of drivers who aren’t in the playoffs. Rest assured that all the drivers who missed the playoffs would like nothing more than to play the role of spoiler over the season’s final 10 races, starting with Sunday night’s playoff opener at Darlington. Of course, if there’s one driver who seems more than capable of raining on the playoff drivers’ proverbial parade, it’s seven-time series champion Jimmie Johnson, who missed the playoffs by only six points. The fact that this is Johnson’s last full season in the sport should give him even more incentive to steal some thunder from the playoff drivers. “There’s 10 more chances to take a trophy home,” Johnson said. “That’s all we’re focused on at this point. Nothing else matters; it’s about winning races and finishing up this year as we should.”

KEVIN HARVICK & DENNY HAMLIN STILL IN THE CATBIRD SEAT
T
he NASCAR Cup Series’ regular season was dominated by Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin — who combined to win 13, or exactly half, of the 26 races. Not surprisingly, Harvick and Hamlin begin the playoffs ranked first and second in the standings, respectively, based on the massive amount of playoff points they both accrued for their efforts in the regular season. While Harvick is atop the standings, Hamlin is second and just 10 points back. The next closest driver, thirdplace Brad Keselowski, is 28 points out of first place. Harvick and Hamlin not surprisingly split the two races held at Darlington earlier this year when NASCAR returned to action following its break for the COVID-19 pandemic. To proclaim Harvick and Hamlin anything less than the favorites to win the title would be a mistake. Harvick doesn’t want to get ahead of himself, however. “Right now, we’re one week at a time,” he said. “Our goal is to really worry about what’s happening this week.”

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER
■■ Jimmie Johnson crosses the finish line to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 9, 2016 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“NOBODY HAS TO REMIND ME THAT WE HADN’T WON A RACE” JIMMIE COMES THROUGH FOR RICK AT CHARLOTTE BY JA RED TURNER
I
n early October 2016, Jimmie Johnson was riding an uncharacteristic 23-race winless streak and desperately needed to inject some momentum into his struggling bid for a recordtying seventh NASCAR Cup Series championship. To virtually no one’s surprise, Johnson found his mojo and some momentum at one of his favorite and most successful tracks — Charlotte Motor Speedway. Starting the Bank of America 500 from the 11th position, Johnson took the lead for the first time on lap 117 and mostly cruised from there as his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet led 155 of the race’s 334 laps to go to Victory Lane for the first time since March 20 at Auto Club Speedway. Johnson used the win at Charlotte not only to punch an automatic ticket to the next round of the playoffs but also to serve notice to everyone that he and his six-time championship-winning team were strong title contenders in spite of their lengthy dry spell. “Nobody has to remind me that we hadn’t won a race in a while,” team owner Rick Hendrick said. “You guys (the media) remind me of
0 1 8

that every weekend, and they do on TV. It kind of motivated us and, you know, Jimmie, we just lacked speed through the middle part, early part of the year. Just had to work really hard to gain it back. Nobody ever gave up and, you know, we know what a champion Jimmie is. This feels good.” Johnson led the final 18 laps after taking the top spot from fellow veteran Matt Kenseth, who finished 1.474 seconds behind in second. “Once we got some track position, the car drove great,” Johnson said. “Restarts seemed to be very important and being able to control the race. Then we led so many laps that at first it’s like, ‘Yeah, we’ve got this.’ Then you start thinking, ‘Well, the driver that leads the most laps typically doesn’t win.’ Cautions fell our way in a sense.”

INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE PERMATEX CONTINUES TO LEAD WITH GASKETS AND SEALERS
E
ighty four years ago, a special 1936 Ford roadster competed on the Daytona Beach and Road Course with driver Milt Marion taking the checkered flag. On the car’s doors were the words, “FORM-A-GASKET-TEST CAR‘MILT’ MARION DRIVER FOR PERMATEX.” The 1933 AAA Eastern Canadian champion will forever be known as the first-ever stock car winner on the beach driving a machine built purely as an experiment to test the durability of Permatex Form-A-Gasket. According to an article written for Permatex by Marion in 1936 and recently posted on the Hemmings website, the company purchased the new Ford convertible and completely disassembled and reassembled it with Marion supervising the process. Twentyeight original paper and cork gaskets were

replaced with beads of Permatex Form-A-Gasket 2. Only the head gaskets, fuel-pump gaskets and rear-end gaskets remained. Quick setting Form-A-Gasket 1 became hard as it dried while Form-A-Gasket 2 dried slowly but remained pliable. Mechanics praised Permatex Form a Gasket in their shops across the country even before Marion proved they would exceed expectations by putting it to the test on the nation’s highways as well as in competition. On March 1, 1936, Marion traveled from Long Island, New York to Florida to join the 27-car field at Daytona. He won by more than three miles ahead of the remaining 10 cars still running at the finish. Marion then traveled through the Gulf Coast into Texas, on to Los Angeles and then San Francisco. He journeyed through Nevada,

SPONSOR SPOTIGHT Wyoming, Colorado and Illinois before arriving back in New York. Permatex executives had Marion drive and race the Ford until late August. In September of 1936, the car was disassembled again after logging a total of 20,297 miles. Eight decades after Marion masterfully defied the odds, Permatex continues to sell gasket making and sealing products under the Form-AGasket banner. Derrike Cope, winner of the 1990 Daytona 500 and current team manager of StarCom Racing, has been using Permatex products since he was 14 years of age as an engine builder for his father. “Looking back, you’re talking about the 1930s when Milton Marion won that race at Daytona and to do those types of things was tough.” Cope said. “That race and the miles he put on that car afterward really showed the capability of the Permatex products in a manner that showcased how good they were then and are to this day. To still be going strong and have such a multitude of product lines in outlets where they are sold and used is really amazing.” 0 2 2
Quin Houff, driver of the No. 00 StarCom Racing Chevrolet, is proud to carry the Permatex colors at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway on Sept. 6. It’s the sixth race StarCom Racing and Permatex have teamed for this season. “Having Permatex as one of our partners this year has really been fun for sure,” Houff said. “It’s a product that we’ve used in our family trucking business for years. Having Permatex on my car as a rookie in the Cup Series is very rewarding and really cool especially since the company has so much history with racing. When they decided to do the Milt Marion Throwback paint scheme for the Southern 500, I knew it was going to be really cool from the early days of Daytona. “The Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway is a crown-jewel race for The Cup series. It would be awesome to have a great finish there.” Even though race cars of today are greatly advanced over Marion’s famed Ford, stock car drivers and teams as well as everyday mechanics continue to rely heavily on incredible performance from Permatex.

Josh Bilicki BY ROB TIONGSON
0 2 4
Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with Josh Bilicki, a NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR XFINITY Series racer. ▶▶ It’s been a busy year between your solid efforts in the XFINITY Series and respectable runs in the Cup car with Rick Ware and Tommy Baldwin’s teams. How exciting has it been to drive for these teams and put together competitive efforts? It’s been fun, especially the last month and a half starting at Indy. We had a top-25 in the Brickyard 400 in Tommy Baldwin’s No. 7 car. Then we followed that up with another top-25 at Kansas with Rick Ware. To the outsider looking in, that might not seem like a great finish. But for our small team with very limited resources, we just do so much with a little so that was a very good day for us. That kind of started things out this last month on a good note. We went to the Indy road course in the XFINITY Series where we ran in the top10. We should’ve finished there but we got wrecked out. At Road America and Daytona, we led laps at both races and we had fast, top-10 cars. We brought home a solid finish at Daytona. It’s been really rewarding and positive and I feel like we have a lot of momentum going forward. Hopefully, we can carry that through some more Cup and XFINITY races.

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ What’s it been like to work with your sponsor Insurance King and collaborate with folks like the great Michael Winslow? And did you ever watch Spaceballs? I have watched Spaceballs after I met Michael and worked with him. I felt that I should go take a look at that and I heard about the movie. It’s really cool to work with Insurance King. Dan Block, the president of Insurance King, is so creative and has so many great ideas. Nowadays, the branding on the racecar doesn’t just do the job. You need everything else that goes with it from the marketing standpoint like social media to all these crazy things we do like having Michael Winslow film a video with us. We have awesome partners that Insurance King partners with like Rockin’ Vodka and The Wounded Blue. They go out of their way and a lot of their deals hit so much more than the branding on the car. And I think that’s why we’ve been so successful. Another major factor why I think our relationship is so unique is because of our fan engagement. There’s not many sponsors that take the time to respond to all of our fans and produce hero cards like we have been. It’s pretty cool to hear back from our fans to hear that Insurance King is the most fan friendly sponsor in NASCAR which I’m not just saying that just because they’re our sponsor. I truly do believe that. They are definitely up there. All of my sponsors are very fan friendly but I think Insurance King takes it to the very next level. I know that Dan Block has sent out 400 to 500 hero cards in one night. He put them all in an envelope all by himself and that’s how much he cares about being a part of our sport and engaging with the fans, so that’s pretty cool. 0 2 6

IN THE HOTSEAT ▶▶ With the “show up and race” format in place until the COVID-19 pandemic is resolved, how much of a challenge is it to get ready for races? We’ve got a pandemic dog now too, so we’ve got a French Bulldog puppy named Xena, so we’ve got two of them to take care of now! I actually don’t mind the no practice schedule. I say that and all of our crew chiefs and teams have notebooks from the last couple of years. Usually we fire off pretty good. But if we ever get to the point where we fired off and our car is awful, that’s when we’ll say, “I wished we had practice.” For the most part, it’s been pretty fun and a little challenging for me at first. There’s a couple of tracks that I’ve never driven in the Cup Series (car) like Darlington, Charlotte, and Dover (before this season). Some of these are obviously steeper learning curves for me but I really enjoy it. Everybody’s kind of in the same page. There’s some guys who have lots of experience and there’s some people who are rookies who are going there without practice. It’s been fun and I do like it. I think sometimes, the three-day race weekends are a bit long, especially the weekends where all we have is qualifying on Saturday. Hopefully, NASCAR takes a look at this and says, “Well, we can do one day shows and two day shows at most.” It obviously saves our crew a lot of time being away from their families and the shop. Overall, I think it’s been a pretty good effort by NASCAR.

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ As you’ve settled in the world of NASCAR, I’ve got to imagine you’ve made some friends in the garage area. Who are some folks that you can enjoy downtime with and maintain a great relationship with on the track? I honestly think the first one that comes to mind is Camden Murphy. He hasn’t made as many NASCAR starts but he and I go back to karting. He grew up in the Chicago area and I grew up in Wisconsin. We met when I was 10 or 11 racing in go-karts. I’m still very good friends with him. He and I talk all the time and he’s one of my better friends. It’s silly but if you go to our Wikipedia pages, someone put in there that Josh Bilicki and Camden Murphy are good friends. Spencer Boyd’s another one. He’s in the Truck Series but we race in the XFINITY Series full-time. We grew to knew each other and we enjoy hanging out outside of the track. There’s a lot of drivers that I really respect and would like to spend more time with but it’s hard, especially right now. I still live in Wisconsin which is a big factor why I don’t get to see as many drivers as much. Timmy Hill, JJ Yeley, Garrett Smithley, Reed Sorenson, Joey Gase, and James Davison, who’s branching out to NASCAR from IndyCar, those are the few drivers I get along with. There’s a handful that I don’t get along with but it’s really cool to be a part of the NASCAR family. ▶▶ Let’s say that you got to host a day for your fans and NASCAR enthusiasts at a track for a weekend. What musicians or bands would you invite to perform at “Josh Bilicki Day?” The first one would be Cheap Trick because we’re partnered through them with Insurance King. Doing some research, there’s a lot of songs of theirs that I do know. And they even sing the intro song to “That 70’s Show” which I think a lot of people have watched so I think there’s a lot more people than they think. Another one, which would be surprising, would be U2 because growing up, my dad’s favorite band still is U2. I grew up listening to them. It got to the point where I liked them for a while when I was young but then I hated them cause I heard them way too much. But now I’m old enough where I really enjoy them. Imagine Dragon would be pretty cool as well.

MEMORY LANE:
JEFF GORDON WINS HIS FIFTH SOUTHERN 500 BY ROB TIONGSON
D
uring a season that presented plentiful plot twists like a Martin Scorsese film, Jeff Gordon and his No. 24 team sought for familiarity at Darlington. After winning a fourth NASCAR Cup Series championship in 2001, Gordon and the DuPont crew trudged through an uneven 2002 campaign. Averaging a 13th-place finish after 24 races, three spots lower from their average finishing spot from 2001, Gordon looked forward to “The Track Too Tough to Tame.” The 2002 season was a critical one for Gordon, a year in which he overcame some personal challenges off the track. Most of all, it was a time in which the real Gordon showed up in the public spotlight, more apt to crack a smile at the track or joke around with fellow drivers. Heading into the 2002 Southern 500, Gordon ranked third in the points standings, just 111 points from points leader Sterling Marlin. Moreover, the circuit was heading to a track that he won on five previous occasions,

including four consecutive Southern 500 races from 1995 to ’98. Also, Gordon was coming off an exciting win in the 2002 Bristol Night Race, a victory that snapped a 31-race winless streak. That said, he was probably watching his rearview mirror closely in case Rusty Wallace sought for a bit of payback. Besides retribution from one of his longtime rivals, Gordon had tough competition in the form of Sterling Marlin, Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, and Jimmie Johnson, his Hendrick Motorsports teammate and Cup Series rookie candidate. While Marlin possessed some Gordon-like luck in 2002 with a pair of wins (Las Vegas and Darlington), title foes like Martin, who won the CocaCola 600 at Charlotte, and Stewart, who triumphed at Atlanta, Richmond, and Watkins Glen, were consistently fast and dangerous all season long. Moreover, Johnson, a driver with lukewarm success in the NASCAR XFINITY Series from 2000 to ’01, showcased incredible promise when he took the checkered flag at Fontana and Dover. With five top-fives and 14 top-10 finishes prior to Round 24 of the 2002 season, the El Cajon, Calif. racer wasn’t exactly a pushover on the track. Naturally, the one element that nearly proved to be too difficult to push away from Darlington was Mother Nature. However, conditions improved enough for a better late than never edition of this crown jewel NASCAR race at the 1.366-mile egg-shaped speedway.

With rain washing away the race’s qualifying session, the starting grid was determined by owner’s points following Bristol’s night race. As a result, Marlin and Martin started on the front row while Gordon and Stewart occupied the second row. Focused on drying the track as quickly and efficiently as possible, the Southern 500 kicked off with a green/yellow start, which allowed Marlin to lead the first 19 laps. Once the field got the official green flag to start the race at full speed, Martin rocketed past Marlin to take the top spot for 25 laps. On Lap 45, Bill Elliott scooted past Martin for the first of two trips in the number one position. In fact, without counting the green/yellow start, there were 10 lead changes among seven different drivers in the race’s first 239 laps. Meanwhile, Gordon and crew chief Robbie Loomis kept working on the No. 24 DuPont Chevy Monte Carlo, constantly tweaking the handling characteristics of their steel chariot. Keeping up with the track’s changes more efficiently than their competitors, Gordon zipped by Marlin into Turn 3 to the lead on Lap 240. Making his way onto pit road on Lap 302, the No. 24 team reeled off a quick 15.1-second pit stop for four tires and fuel. Relinquishing the lead during the pit stop cycle between Laps 302 to 304, Gordon returned to the top of the leaderboard before a Lap 305 caution for debris off Turn 2.

MEMORY LANE Once the race resumed to green flag conditions on Lap 309, Gordon charged his way to a healthy lead before another caution on Lap 315 for a piece of Joe Nemechek’s tire carcass in Turn 3. With the final restart on Lap 323, Gordon continued to lead the way with few issues and obstacles in his way. Unlike the Darlington spring race in which he was involved in a Turn 2 skirmish just 66 laps from the finish, this day belonged to the Californian. Taking his fifth Southern 500, Gordon was as jubilant as the 24-year-old hot shot who won his first Darlington race in 1995. “Oh my gosh, what’s going on here, man?” Gordon pondered to TNT’s Bill Weber in Victory Lane. “These guys have come alive. We’ve heard it before. If these guys get a win, watch out! I think we’re just coming up to tracks that suit us. We didn’t capitalize at Bristol and Darlington the first time around. We sure are making up for it right now.” Always a big picture thinker, Gordon reflected on his steady, respectable adversary in Marlin 0 4 2
and his No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid team. “We’re gaining but it’s not easy to gain on Sterling,” Gordon said. “He’s consistent, they run good on a lot of different tracks. So, we’re doing all that we can do. We’re leading laps, fighting hard, and with two wins back-to-back, I tell you what, it’s going to do a world of good for us.” Unfortunately, the highs came to a screeching halt for Gordon and Marlin following the Southern 500. Certainly, Richmond played cruel tricks to this duo, with Marlin crashing hard in Turn 3 on Lap 9 while Gordon experienced engine woes after 84 laps. Ultimately, Marlin’s career ended in violent fashion when he crashed into the inside retaining backstretch wall at Kansas. Contending with a neck injury that sidelined him for the rest of the year, a relatively unknown Jamie McMurray substituted for Marlin, hitting paydirt with a surprising victory in Round 31 at Charlotte. As for Gordon, inconsistent performances relegated the fourtime Cup champion to a fourth-place points finish. Still, the most incredible highlight in Gordon’s first “Drive for Five” campaign was his Darlington mastery, one of the finest drives for this NASCAR Hall of Fame driver.

DRIVER Q&A
COLE CUSTER MAKES HISTORY AS A CUP ROOKIE BY JOSEPH WOLK IN
Stewart-Haas Racing’s Cole Custer made history when he entered Victory Lane at Kentucky Speedway. Not only did he do the unthinkable by winning in his rookie season at the Cup level, but he became just the third rookie to ever qualify for the playoffs. Now, he’s ready to show what he’s capable of. ▶ WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR YOU THIS YEAR? “The biggest thing is getting used to the cars. They’re definitely different from the XFINITY cars, how they drive and how you go about things. The competition level is higher, so if you’re off a little bit, you’re further behind.” ▶ HOW HAVE YOUR TEAMMATES AT SHR HELPED YOU GET ACCLIMATED TO THE CUP SERIES? “They’ve been huge. Having Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick and Aric Almirola as teammates has been huge in helping to get me going. Any advice that I ask for, they help a lot. I try to talk with Kevin about every single week, and he’s been really helpful. It’s a dream scenario to have the type of teammates who will help you out in any type of way. You need to make your own way and have your own ideas at times, but having them point you in the right direction helps.” 0 4 4

JUST SEND IT, RICKY! In this week’s episode of Danny B Talks, Danny takes us through the career of one of NASCAR’s most famous Ricky and tell us about the moment that helped define him at Darlington. This is the story of a NASCAR driver named Ricky, who at Darlington, SC defined his entire career in one moment where he, well, sent it. We should all be like Ricky and just send it in life, at least according to Danny B as he takes us through the race, and compares him to 0 4 6
some of the other famous Ricky’s in the sport. After all, most people would think of Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. or Ricky Rudd when it comes down to it. What do you think? How does this moment rank in terms of most iconic moments of the sport of NASCAR, and do you believe we could one day see a finish that compares to this one? Who’s your favorite Ricky, and of course, how’d they do at Darlington? Let Danny B know after you check out this week’s episode!

OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBERS CLUB
A JIMMIE JOHNSON FAN’S DREAM COME TRUE BY DA N GUT TENPL A N ERIE, PA., RESIDENT BONNIE BELL DOESN’T have to think hard to remember her favorite moment in the Original NASCAR Members Club. In 2016, she had a chance to see her favorite driver, Jimmie Johnson, win his seventh NASCAR Cup Series championship from the start-finish line at Homestead-Miami Speedway. “That was my first VIP experience,” Bell said. “I’ve been able to meet Jimmie several times. He’s such a down-to-earth guy. The club’s been fantastic.” Bell answered a few questions about her experience with the Original NASCAR Members Club. ▶▶ How long have you been a member? “I’ve been a fan of NASCAR for 25 years and a member of the club for the last six years.” ▶▶ Do you go to the races at Pocono Raceway? “I’ve actually never been to Pocono. I go to Bristol. I’ve been there six times. I generally go to a different track every year. Not this year, unfortunately.” ▶▶ What’s your favorite part of being in the club? “The prices on merchandise 0 4 8
■■ Original NASCAR Members Club member Bonnie Bell and her late husband
are amazing. You get memorabilia for pennies on the dollar of what you’d get at other places. The VIP experiences are also so valuable.” ▶▶ What do you like about Jimmie Johnson? “It’s his personality. None of the NASCAR guys think they’re better than anyone else. I go in the pits as an everyday person, and they’ll stop and talk to me. They’re incredible people. Jimmie is the epitome of a champion. Win or lose, he’s an honest, genuine guy. He doesn’t get angry and end an interview or anything like that.” ▶▶ How do you think Jimmie’s season will finish? “I think he’s going to get at least one more win. He’s on a hot streak and doing well. It was just bad luck he didn’t make the playoffs. The Matt Kenseth wreck wasn’t anyone’s fault. I really wish the COVID didn’t happen because I had plans to watch the final race in Phoenix.”
