NASCAR IS TURNING AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY INTO A SHORT TRACK In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through the biggest NASCAR story of 2020, and that’s certainly saying something this year. The headline - NASCAR will be tearing down (some) of Auto Club Speedway and replacing it with a short track, to be debuted for the 2022 NASCAR season. This was a hectic week, particularly for fans on the West Coast. Eric takes us through the brief history, the rise and fall if you will, of NASCAR tracks over the past few decades. When NASCAR was booming, 0 0 4

new 1.5 mile tracks were erected all across the country, and many more tracks dramatically scaled up their seating for larger attendances. But the cord cutting era wasn’t kind to ticket sales for any traditional sport, and NASCAR has found themselves scaling back the tracks. On the flip side, Eric and many more fans have been demanding more short tracks be added to the circuit for years. Eric takes us through the debate around the new track, short tracks, attendance and more in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

5 THINGS TO WATCH

THINGS TO WATCH AT RICHMOND Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond Raceway is, oddly enough, the first race of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season at the Virginia short track. The revamped schedule resulting from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic shifted Richmond’s traditional spring date to Darlington, leaving Richmond with only a fall race weekend this year. Nevertheless, Saturday night’s showdown couldn’t be much bigger, as it marks the playoff drivers’ next-to-last opportunity to position themselves for entry into the Round of 12. Following are five things to watch for under the lights this weekend. BY JA RED TURNER

A CONFIDENT, MOSTLY CAREFREE KEVIN HARVICK

W

ith all the playoff points Kevin Harvick amassed during the regular season, it was never in serious doubt whether he would advance to the Round of 12 in the playoffs. But with a victory in last weekend’s playoff opener at Darlington, it became official: Harvick has punched a ticket to the next round. Just knowing this takes a good bit of pressure off Harvick and his team heading to Richmond this weekend. Without really having to consider points, Harvick can basically go for broke and simply focus on scoring a series-high ninth victory. “That’s just the great spot that we’re in that we can continue to be aggressive and make aggressive calls and do aggressive things to try to win,” Harvick said. Crew chief Rodney Childers is likewise thankful to be in this position. “Richmond is a place I’ve never won at, so to go there and to be able to just race and race hard is super important to us,” Childers said.

DRIVERS ON EDGE

C

lint Bowyer, Cole Custer, Matt DiBenedetto and Ryan Blaney are the four drivers on the wrong side of the cutline with two races to go in the Round of 16. Aric Almirola, who is tied with Bowyer in points, would advance to the Round of 12 on the basis of a tiebreaker. Needless to say, Saturday night’s race at Richmond is a high-stakes, pressure-packed scenario for those anywhere near the cutline. “It’s pretty simple,” Bowyer said. “You win Richmond Saturday night and don’t worry about a thing until the next round. Anything less, and you are going to lay awake a lot of nights.” Bowyer is especially leery of heading to Bristol — site of the final race in the Round of 16 — still uncertain of whether he will advance. “You don’t want your season’s hopes and dreams coming down to Bristol, where anything can and probably will happen,” Bowyer said. “You want to get your work done this weekend in Richmond.”

A LITTLE PAYBACK FOR MARTIN TRUEX JR.?

W

hile Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. stopped short of sharply criticizing each other after making contact while battling for the lead last Sunday night, it’s fair to say neither driver left Darlington happy. Truex, for his part, tried to smooth things over a bit during post-race interviews but didn’t take full responsibility for the collision that cost both drivers a shot at the victory. “I hate it for the 9 team,” Truex said. “Obviously, it was nothing intentional; just two guys going for the win and not enough room for both of us there. If it was my fault, I apologize. I really felt like I had the position to get in there to Turn 1. That’s how it goes, and we’ll see what goes on from here.” Elliott, meanwhile, said that Truex “cleared himself” going into Turn 1 — an obvious reference to how Truex moved up the track into Elliott before completing the pass. Might some retaliation be in order at Richmond?

KYLE BUSCH’S BEST SHOT

T

he bad news for Kyle Busch is that he will have to compete this weekend without crew chief Adam Stevens, who is serving a onerace suspension for a lug nut violation at Darlington. The good news for Busch is that he owns six Richmond victories — most among active drivers. If there’s a track where the reigning series champion is more than capable of ending his season-long drought, it’s this .75mile, D-shaped oval. “Richmond is a great place for us and our team,” Busch said. “Having good cars there has certainly been something that we’ve been fortunate with at Joe Gibbs Racing over the years. I’ve won there six times, and I’ve been in the top five about every time we go there, so I would like to think that we can keep that string going and, more importantly, get a win. We need some wins this year, and we look forward to Richmond being one of those places we can do that.”

BUBBA WALLACE’S AWKWARD SEASON CLOSE

T

his morning, sources close to the team revealed that Bubba Wallace would not be returning to Richard Petty Motorsports in 2021. Bubba released a statement on Twitter saying “this was not an easy decision as I have nothing but the utmost respect for Richard Petty and his family, but I believe it’s time for someone else to take over the reins of the No. 43. Thank you to the King and everyone at Richard Petty Motorsports for giving me the opportunity to start my Cup Series career.” The driver added “I’ve grown so much as a driver and as a person since joining them. We’ve got nine more races together, and I hope we can finish the 2020 season on a high note.” Wallace joined RPM in 2017 following the departure of Aric Almirola. The only African American Cup Series driver, Wallace has dramatically increased his public profile in 2020, giving him new sponsorship opportunities as well as newfound leverage in negotiating with teams. His next destination is currently unknown.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER

■■ Jimmie Johnson celebrates with a burnout after winning the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 1, 2015 in Hampton, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

JJ’S QUICK TRIP TO THE CHECKERED FLAG IN ATLANTA “WE BOTH IMPRESSED ONE ANOTHER” BY JA RED TURNER

J

immie Johnson has won 83 races and a record-tying seven championships in his illustrious NASCAR Cup Series career. However, few accomplishments have garnered as much praise from his longtime (now former) crew chief, Chad Knaus, as his victory in the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 1, 2015. Lining up 37th on the 43-car grid, Johnson wasted little time working his way toward the front at the fast, 1.54-mile suburban Atlanta track. After taking the lead for the first time on lap 198 of 325, the Hendrick Motorsports driver went on to spend 92 laps ahead of the field and crossed the finish line 1.802 seconds ahead of runner-up Kevin Harvick, who logged a race-high 116 laps out front. “It was actually a lot of fun knowing there was going to be a competition caution on lap 25, watching Jimmie just rally through the field in the first 25 laps,” Knaus said. “I thought it was fantastic. That was a lot of fun. I enjoyed that. “Then we were able to get up front and have some good

0 1 8

runs today. It was a lot of fun. We enjoyed it. Very proud of Jimmie.” Johnson, for his part, was flattered to learn of the high compliment that Knaus — one of NASCAR’s most fiercely competitive crew chiefs of alltime — bestowed on his efforts in the season’s second race. “Yeah, today I think we both impressed one another,” the then six-time Cup champion driver said. “To fly through the field like that, to feel those sensations in the car, the car creating that much grip, be that friendly, be able to work traffic, from my standpoint was surprising. I’m sure from his standpoint, sitting on the box watching me pass two to three a lap, was impressive as well. “It is pretty wild after all these years that we’re able to do that and still impress one another, but we did it today.”

Bridget Burgess BY ROB TIONGSON

0 2 0

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with Bridget Burgess, ARCA Menards Series West racer. ▶▶ Hailing from a family who’s made their name known in off road racing, what intrigued you with racing in stock cars at some of the most competitive short tracks and bullrings in the West Coast? Actually, when we moved to America, my mom started drifting in 2011. As a family, we always watched NASCAR just because my parents had huge such interest in motorsports. I have always had a passion for NASCAR, they are a unique race car to drive and are extremely competitive throughout the field. The reason I started my racing career in off-road is because my mom, Sarah Burgess, was already involved in the series, so we already had the spares and the type of racing aggression I was getting into since I watched it for so many years beforehand. My parents did not have the money nor time to run in two different series, let alone have a two-truck off-road team. In 2019, we came across an opportunity for me to be involved in asphalt racing. I started off in the SK Asphalt Modified in a small town in Twin Falls, Idaho at Magic Valley Speedway to build my license and eventually managed to get a car for a couple races in the K&N West Series; it wasn’t the greatest car however I wasn’t going to give up the opportunity so I took my chances and drove as many races as we could with the car we had.

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ As someone who’s grown up in the motorsports world virtually all of your life, you’ve got the car savvy and knowledge with what goes into the mechanical side of these machines. How much of an asset is it to have this expertise and technical experience compared to some of your fellow competitors who may lack this knowledge? In my opinion, it is extremely important to know the mechanical side of every car you drive. When I’m on the track, I’m always paying attention to my temperatures, pressures, sounds, and smell of the car. The reason I learned this quickly is because I knew my parents couldn’t afford anything new, so if I blew a motor, my year was done. Now even if I didn’t have to work on my car, I would still learn the car regardless. That way, if there was a problem, I could instantly go to my crew chief or spotter and give my insight of how the car is. Another thing about knowing your car and the efforts it takes to get to the next race is that it gives you an understanding of what the team does for you and will give you so much appreciation for the car. ▶▶ As you’re embarking in your first years in the NASCAR and ARCA scene, who are some drivers who you’d say welcomed you or made you feel accepted in these series? It was tough coming into a new series with completely different types of drivers and racing. Someone who has made me feel very welcome into the series and even before I started asphalt racing was Bill McAnally. He has always been there to help, support, and encourage when he can and I greatly appreciate how he gives the time of day. Other people who have helped are Derek Kraus and Lawless Alan and some of the crew from different teams.

IN THE HOTSEAT ▶▶ Let’s imagine that I am a race fan who’s just tuned into a race that’s televised on NBCSN and you’re racing in it. Give me three selling points that’ll make me become a fan of your racing efforts. I am originally from Brisbane, Australia. I grew up in a race shop and learned to work on cars and grew a passion for racing. My parents had a deal where if I wanted to race, I must work for it. So, I started working on my mom’s off-road truck at the age 13 to learn and understand what I’m getting into. Another part of it was being fit. I take everything in racing seriously and I believe fitness plays a huge role in racing. If I’m not at the gym training, I am at my home track driving my shifter kart or on the road course getting as much seat time as I can. ▶▶ As a driver who enjoys various kinds of motorsports, who are some racers that you look up to and admire from afar? My first favorite driver would be Jimmie Johnson. I look up to his dedication and commitment that he has made to the sport, and also how hard he works on his fitness. Another driver would be Daniel Ricciardo. No matter how his day ends, he is always grateful and positive towards his team and drives 110 percent with the equipment he has.

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ You’ve mentioned in a prior interview how the NASCAR Cup Series is your ultimate goal. How focused and devoted are you in realizing this dream? The NASCAR Cup Series is definitely my ultimate goal. Racing is something I live and breathe. I’m at my local home track, Utah Motorsports Campus, everyday. I have a garage there and I’m always working on my racecars. Every week, I’m driving my shifter kart or driving on the road course with a race car or track car. I am extremely dedicated and committed to achieving my goals of becoming a NASCAR Cup Series driver and I’ll do anything it takes to get there. ▶▶ In off road truck racing, I imagine the biggest thrill during those races is just driving at incredible heights on those hilly, dirt tracks. In an ARCA stock car, while it’s quite a different discipline, what experience would you say is exciting in its own way? Off-road and ARCA are both very intense but in their own ways. In off-road, there is a lot of contact, crazy jumps and sliding around. However, the race only goes for 30 minutes unlike ARCA where it goes for over an hour! ARCA has a whole other level of intensity. We have a fair amount of contact, hot slick asphalt, and driving with one set of tires for 100-150 laps, depending on the track, which makes it overly exciting to me.

MEMORY LANE:

DALE EARNHARDT JR TAKES EMOTIONAL RICHMOND WIN BY ROB TIONGSON

W

hen Dale Earnhardt Jr graduated to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2000 as a two-time NASCAR XFINITY Series champion, the sky was truly the limit. Without a doubt, Earnhardt, who entered the premier division as one of the most popular racers in motorsports, sought to make a name for himself as a brash 25-year-old racer. Entering the 2000 NASCAR Cup Series season, Earnhardt was among six new faces competing for the Rookie of the Year honors. Competing against the likes of Mike Bliss, Dave Blaney, Jeff Fuller, Mike Bliss, and Matt Kenseth, this was no ordinary rookie class. Certainly, with a truly competitive freshman class taking to the Cup Series, Earnhardt was one of the favorites for rookie honors in the No. 8 Budweiser Chevy fielded by Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Working with longtime crew chief Tony Eury, Sr., it was a logical pairing given their success in the NASCAR XFINITY Series in 1998-’99.

However, it was not all smooth sailing for Earnhardt during the first ten races of the season. For starters, Earnhardt, who captured his maiden Cup win in Round 7 of the year at Texas Motor Speedway, only mustered an average finish of 20th, relegating him to the 22nd spot in the driver’s standings. Dogged by inconsistency and a pair of accidents at Darlington and Bristol, Earnhardt’s season seemed to resemble Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder before the famous talk and test session scene. Similarly, Earnhardt possessed a raw, aggressive approach in the driver’s seat, traits prevalent with his father, Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Nevertheless, Earnhardt was an exciting, youthful new

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: SEPTEMBER, 10 2020

presence to the Cup Series seeking an alternative icon to the likes of Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Bobby and Terry Labonte, and Rusty Wallace. If fans didn’t feel connected with the established guard or Tony Stewart, the 1999 Rookie of the Year, Earnhardt seemed to be the people’s choice. Heading into Round 11 of the NASCAR Cup Series season, Earnhardt and his competitors took up the 0.75-mile Richmond Raceway on May 6th, 2020. To say the least, Earnhardt had to like his chances at this famed short track as he logged three XFINITY Series wins prior to his Cup promotion. Starting from the fifth position, Earnhardt hovered inside the top10 all evening long while Rusty Wallace and Tony Stewart led

for a combined total of 296 laps or 74 percent of the race. These short track aces battled the likes of Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Ricky Rudd, and Jeff Burton with a young Earnhardt lurking in the shadows. Contenders like Jeremy Mayfield, Todd Bodine, Robby Gordon, Kenny Irwin, Jr., Mike Bliss, and Chad Little fell victim to some short track accidents that eliminated them from contention. Even frontrunners like Bobby Labonte and Mike Skinner went for a spin cycle respectively on the frontstretch and backstretch on Laps 264 and 318. Perhaps the biggest turning point of the evening came on Lap 363 when Mark Martin crashed on the frontstretch. With the race’s final caution period bringing the lead lap drivers onto pit road, Stewart, who entered the pits in the lead, seemed like he had this race all locked up. As Stewart was driving off pit road, Earnhardt, whose No. 8 team delivered on a clutch pit stop, was exiting his pit stall. Suddenly, Stewart and Earnhardt tangled on pit road exit, with both drivers’ cars sporting some damage. While Earnhardt’s right front got a bit of a shiner, Stewart’s left rear was crinkled up and rubbing against the tire, forcing the Hoosier State native to pit again for repairs. This costly contact essentially eliminated Stewart out of contention. Suddenly, this race went from the “Tony Stewart Show” to the “Dale and Dale Show.” While Earnhardt and his competitors pitted, they dealt with perhaps the toughest driver to intimidate in Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Once the race resumed green flag conditions on Lap 369, it was a battle between father and son for the victory as the field approached Turn 2. With both drivers running side-by-side for nearly a lap, it was the younger Earnhardt who prevailed in this incredible battle. Although Earnhardt took the lead on Lap 370, it wasn’t exactly an easy Saturday night cruise around this action-packed short track. Charging his way from the 30th starting spot and up to the second position in the final laps, “Texas” Terry Labonte emerged as a new player for the win. With Labonte in hot pursuit of Earnhardt, another grizzled veteran joined the fight as Dale Jarrett, the 1999 NASCAR Cup Series champion, willed his way to the third spot. For the final 31 laps, this trio were car lengths of each other,

MEMORY LANE seemingly playing a cat and mouse game of who’ll attack first for the win. Would it be the rookie, a cool headed but sneaky two-time Cup champion, or the ageless second-generation racer snookering the top-two if Earnhardt and Labonte tangled? As determined and skillful as Labonte and Jarrett were in trying to rattle the young rookie, Earnhardt was not going to be denied. By just 0.159 seconds, Earnhardt earned his second Cup Series win in rather incredible fashion. Once Earnhardt pulled into Victory Lane, the Kannapolis, N.C. native emerged from his car and dived into the arms of his pit crew like a rockstar. Thrilled with his second career Cup win, Earnhardt was elated but candid with the key moment of the race. “I tell you what, we didn’t have the car to win,” Earnhardt said to ESPN’s Dr. Jerry Punch in Victory Lane. “I feel bad about what happened on pit road with Tony (Stewart). I feel real bad about that but he didn’t give me a whole lot of room. I hate that he cut his tire 0 3 8

down but I just tried to run as hard as I could. As you could see, we weren’t the fastest, but we just held onto it.” Despite lacking the speed, Earnhardt made it a memorable victory as he passed his father with 31 laps remaining, a moment that seems more special 20 years later. “I was looking forward to this race because we ran so well here in the past,” Earnhardt observed. “It’s fun to win here. We’ve done so good in front of all of these people. It’s good to run here in (the) Cup (Series). I’m about to pass out! I’m worn out! I drove as hard as I could drive!” Unfortunately, this would be the only race in which the Earnhardts exchanged the lead for the ultimate race-winning move. Tragically, Dale Earnhardt, Sr. passed away from injuries sustained in a last-lap crash in the 2001 Daytona 500. Overcoming the grief and loss of his father from the 2001 season opener, Earnhardt certainly made a name for himself as a respectable, competitive Cup driver, winning 24 more times in his 19-year career. Earning two Daytona 500 wins in 2004 and ‘14 and establishing himself as a personable, insightful racer, Earnhardt, who retired from Cup racing in 2017, enjoys a second career as an analyst for NBC’s NASCAR coverage and the host of his weekly podcast, “The Dale Jr. Download.”

DRIVER Q&A

DENNY HAMLIN FEELS LIKE 2020 IS HIS BEST SHOT AT A TITLE BY JOSEPH WOLK IN

Denny Hamlin is in the middle of one of his best seasons ever for Joe Gibbs Racing, earning six triumphs - including the season opening Daytona 500. Now, as the NASCAR Playoffs get going, Hamlin is ready for his first championship. ▶▶ What would it mean to you to finally win a championship? “We’re working hard at it. This is our best opportunity thus far in my career. We’re running great at every racetrack. There’s nothing that can stand in our way except for ourselves and make a mistake. I certainly believe we have a championship-caliber team. Hopefully, we can make it all the way through the playoffs. We have good bonus points that we acquired through the regular season. Our performance during the regular season got us in a good position throughout the playoffs. It’s up to us to keep doing the work for the next nine weeks and making sure we have a chance when we get down to Phoenix. In our sport, it’s a onerace, winner take all. You never know what can happen. A successful year for us is making it to the Final Four in Phoenix, seeing where the cards stack up from there.” 0 4 0

DRIVER Q&A

▶▶ How disappointed will you be if you can’t cap off a title run? “We faced that last year. We had a Daytona 500 and six wins. This year, we have a Daytona 500 and six wins. In a winnertake-all race, sometimes things work out for you and sometimes, they don’t. Certainly, I would be remiss to say I wouldn’t be upset if we didn’t win the championship. But I also know that, at the beginning of the year, our goal was to win a lot of races and get to the Final Four. We can’t always control what happens in that final race. You can control only what you can control. That’s what I’m 0 4 2

working on and doing all the right things as a driver. I’ll live with the result after that.” ▶▶ 15 full seasons later, does all of this success feel surreal? “It’s amazing. I would have never envisioned that we’d have over 40 wins in my career, much less to be at NASCAR’s top level. It’s been a whirlwind career. It feels like it’s flown by. I feel like I’m still at the peak of it. I don’t see the other side of my career quite yet, especially the way we’re performing. I’m going to continue racking off wins.”

OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBERS CLUB

A CHARTER MEMBER OF THE CLUB BY DA N GUT TENPL A N JOSH JONES (BRANFORD, Conn.) is one of the lucky NASCAR fans to have actually attended a race since the start of the pandemic. He attended the summer race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, continuing his tradition of visiting the track every summer since 1994. Jones, a charter member of the Original NASCAR Members Club, recently joined ROAR to talk about his experience with the club. ▶▶ How long have you been a NASCAR fan? “I’d say since the early 1990s. I caught on to it as a kid watching it with my father. I loved the action. My dad went to the inaugural race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 1993. In 1994, we went as a family. Then, I went as a teenager in the 1990s. When I was older, I went by myself. I’ve been going to a summer race at New Hampshire every year since 1994.” 0 4 4

▶▶ What made you decide to join the Original NASCAR Members Club? “When it first started, I was going on all of the garage tours. I’ve made some connections in the sport now, and I have a friend who can get hot passes. But I’m still a member. I used to sign up for as many VIP events as I could. I’d go to the national convention in Charlotte during All-Star Week. I took tours of the garages of a lot of race teams. I went to the Hall of Fame a couple of years. I’ve been to a tailgate party at the All-Star Race. It’s been a lot of fun.” ▶▶ Who is your favorite driver? “Now? It’s hard to say. It was Dale Jr. Now, there are so many up-and-coming drivers that are good; it’s hard to choose. Between Chase Elliott, William Byron and Bubba Wallace, I like them all. I’m more a fan of the sport as a whole.” ▶▶ How was your experience going to New Hampshire this summer? Pretty normal? “There was no fan zone area. There was a parking lot, and then you had to wear your mask to get in. They did a temperature check. I sat with my parents. We had an entire row for the three of us. There were people in the row in front of us to the side, and people behind us. It was spread out. Other than that, it was a fairly normal race weekend.”

KEEGAN LEAHY PREVAILS WITH DOMINANT DARLINGTON WIN BY ROB TIONGSON

I

f there’s a driver who knows how to win in stock car’s biggest stages, even in the virtual setting, it’s Keegan Leahy of Canada. Prevailing in the season opener at Daytona and taking an exciting victory at the Brickyard, Leahy and his No. 32 Denny Hamlin Racing Toyota team were ready for Round 14 of the 2020 eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series season. While Michael Conti, in his Hut Stricklin-inspired ride, took the pole for eNASCAR’s throwback race at Darlington Raceway, it was a rather interesting start for this Tuesday night tussle. While Conti led the way, a Lap 30 caution that included the likes of John Gorlinsky, Graham Bowlin and Zack Novak prompted the race’s

ESPORTS first round of pit stops. As Leahy won the race off pit road, it seemed like the chances for his competitors to snatch the victory faded away like dirt losing its battle against Tide detergent in the washing machine. Along the way, Bob Bryant, Casey Kirwan, Blake Reynolds, Bobby Zalenski, and Matt Bussa encountered trouble that essentially took these formidable racers out of contention. Zalenski, who swept the Daytona races in August, described his eventful evening at Darlington on Twitter. “Wasn’t my night tonight,” he tweeted. “Was involved in three different wrecks. We just can’t break this funk we have at Darlington. But still I kept fighting with all the damage and somehow ended up P22. Good news, we keep the point lead, and we’re now locked into the playoffs!” Meanwhile, Kirwan, who sported a fresh throwback paying tribute to Michael Jordan, tweeted, “Shot myself in the foot tonight. No excuses. Six more shots at a win. Onto Vegas.” With contenders fell by the wayside, Leahy enjoyed clean air and the race lead like Super 0 4 8

Mario enjoying a run around Yoshi’s Island. Simply put, Leahy was unbeatable on Tuesday evening. Dominant and fast, Leahy’s only true challenger was Conti, who made it a somewhat interesting dash to the finish. Meanwhile, Logan Clampitt, Malik Ray, Caine Cook, Ryan Luza, and Jake Nichols made impressive drives into the top-10, respectively starting 11th, 30th, 17th, 21st, and 23rd in the field of 37 entries. In the waning laps, Conti was within car lengths of Leahy for the race win. Without any lapped cars to impede their progress around this egg-shaped speedway, it would become a game of who’d falter or slip first. Cool as the other side of the pillow, in the words of the late Stuart Scott, Leahy didn’t flinch and earned his third win of the season, prevailing over Conti by 0.334 seconds. “Following his Darlington triumph, Leahy tweeted, “Not a door banger photo finish, but I’ll take ‘em nice and contact-free any chance I can get. Amazing but evil car.” Despite extending his winless streak to 33 races, Conti, who placed second, tweeted,

“A much-needed P2 at Darlington for our No. 8 WR1 team. Had it not been for the first pit cycle putting us back to second, that was our race. Thanks to the team for a bad fast car! Onto Vegas!” Despite placing 22nd, Zalenski retained his points lead but with a rather reduced margin of two points over Leahy. Garrett Lowe, Conti, Luza, Ottinger, Clampitt, Ray Alfalla, Brad Davies, and Vincent round out the top-10 in the driver’s points standings. Leahy, who prevailed over Conti, was 0 5 0

pursued by top-10 finishers Nick Ottinger, Logan Clampitt, Malik Ray, Caine Cook, Ryan Luza, Brad Davies, Kollin Keister, and Jake Nichols The throwbacks may be in the history books with Round 14, but Leahy and his virtual racing comrades prepare for Round 15 of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2020, at 9:00 PM ET/8:00 PM CT. NASCAR.com and iRacing’s Twitch channel will live stream the action.
