MAJOR UPSET ALERT AT LAS VEGAS! In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through his race review and analysis from Las Vegas. And after last night’s upset finish this early in the playoffs, there’s plenty to talk about. No one was expecting the winner, but even the rest of the results might be surprising on closer inspection. The luckiest guy in Vegas this weekend though, was definitely Kurt Busch. This Busch brother has raced so long in NASCAR that he’s basically an institution in the 21st century, and 0 0 4

Eric takes us through the tinge of nostalgia he felt watching an excited Kurt Busch take the checkered flag. How does it affect the playoffs going forward? Eric has the details. How is the bubble looking now that Busch is locked in, and his brother Kyle Busch isn’t? Where was the speed for Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin, or were they just relying on their bank of points to get them through Vegas? Eric has all the context, plus the Groovy Gauge rating, on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

n a city synonymous with gambling, Kurt Busch and crew chief Matt McCall rolled the dice big time with a timely strategy call on Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Their reward was a win that now guarantees them entry into the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs’ Round of 8 and sets the stage for a wild pair of upcoming races in the Round of 12. Following are five important lessons learned in the South Point 400, a race that began in the daytime but ended under the lights in Sin City. BY JA RED TURNER

AUSTIN DILLON AND ARIC ALMIROLA ARE IN THE DANGER ZONE

O

ne of the most pleasant surprises from the Round of 16, Austin Dillon entered Sunday’s first race in the Round of 12 hoping to continue along the path that has propelled him into the championship conversation over the past few weeks. But, unfortunately for the driver of the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, Dillon suffered a major setback in Sin City when the combination of a pit road penalty and a loss of power steering left him with a disappointing 32ndplace finish and sitting last among the dozen drivers who remain in title contention. Just five points ahead of Dillon and in an almost equally precarious position is Aric Almirola, who is 27 points behind the cutoff spot for advancing to the Round of 8. Like Dillon, Almirola had a rough outing in Vegas, where he came home in 17th. “Our Ford Mustang was just not good, and we’ve got ourselves in a pretty big hole,” Almirola said.

DENNY HAMLIN IS A BIG BELIEVER IN BUBBA WALLACE

E

asily the biggest off-track story in Vegas was the blockbuster announcement earlier in the week that NBA legend Michael Jordan will team with Denny Hamlin next season to field a full-time NASCAR Cup Series team for driver Bubba Wallace. Hamlin said over the weekend that he’s a big believer in Wallace’s ability to accomplish great things despite the fact that Wallace is winless in nearly three full seasons with Richard Petty Motorsports. “I think that he’s outperformed his equipment,” Hamlin said. “He’s still got a lot to learn, but I think he’s proven himself to me out on the racetrack as someone that overachieves a lot. I think, hopefully, we can get him race-winning equipment. If we can do that, maybe I can help mentor here and there, but ultimately, he’s going to grow as a driver and he’s going to continue to get better. For us, it’s going to take time to build this team to where it needs to be.”

DENNY HAMLIN MISSED THE JACKPOT IN VEGAS

D

espite having unquestionably the best car at Las Vegas, Denny Hamlin had to settle for a third-place finish. It wasn’t the first time in recent weeks that Hamlin’s Toyota has arguably been the class of the field but fell short due to circumstances beyond the driver’s control. The circumstance that doomed Hamlin on Sunday was a caution flag that came out right in the middle of a cycle of green-flag pit stops with just over 30 laps to go, trapping him a lap down and forcing him to take the wave-around just to get back on the lead lap. “We had a dominant car today, and I’m proud of the whole team for giving me such a great car,” said Hamlin, who led 121 of 268 laps. “By far the best car I’ve had in Las Vegas in a long time. It was really, really good. Really encouraged by the way we ran but very disappointed that we didn’t get a win.”

MATT DIBENEDETTO BLEW A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

F

ighting for his future as driver of the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford, Matt DiBenedetto had a golden opportunity to potentially shore up that future with a win on Sunday at Las Vegas. But instead of celebrating career victory No. 1 and what would have been win No. 100 for the famed Wood Brothers organization, DiBenedetto crossed the finish line in second-place — .148 seconds behind Kurt Busch — and was left to consider the possibilities. “It’s tough to come that close,” DiBenedetto said. “Just wanted it so bad for this team. I love driving for the Wood Brothers. I want that No. 100 for them so bad. The 1 car, Kurt, did a great job. We had completely different ratios for the restarts, and once he gained control of the race, he played the right games on the restarts, and I knew what we had on our weakness there. Man, it’s tough to come that close. I just want it so bad.”

HOMETOWN BOY KURT BUSCH CAUGHT A BREAK & CAPITALIZED

W

inless in 21 starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Kurt Busch ended two decades of frustration at his hometown track by scoring a victory on Sunday that not only marked his first triumph of 2020 but also punched an automatic ticket into the Round of 8. After spending most of the race outside of the top 10, Busch benefited from the timing of a caution flag that waved with just over 30 laps remaining and during a cycle of green flag pit stops. With many of the frontrunners having already made stops and therefore buried deep in the field, Busch was able to pit under caution and move up to second in the running order. On the restart, he quickly disposed of race leader Matt DiBenedetto and went on to lead the final 26 laps. “This is what kids dream of when they grow up racing,” Busch said. “You dream of winning at your hometown track. And for two decades, it’s kicked my butt. We got lucky.”

IT’S A CRYING SHAME THAT KURT BUSCH COULDN’T CELEBRATE HOMETOWN WIN WITH FANS ▶

In many ways, Kurt Busch’s win on Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway had the makings of a fairytale. Here was a driver who after two decades of struggling to break through at his home track was finally able to do so thanks to good fortune on a night when he probably didn’t even have a top-10 car. Talk about a feel-good story. Of course, it would have been much better if Busch had actually been able to celebrate in front of his hometown fans — who, unfortunately, were barred from attending per executive order from the governor of Nevada. “This is Vegas, and I miss the fans,” Busch said after emerging from his race-winning car in front of an eerily empty grandstand. “I miss them so much.” What a shame. What a shame indeed. 0 1 8

MATT DIBENEDETTO DESERVES ANOTHER YEAR WITH THE WOOD BROTHERS ▶

Last year, Matt DiBenedetto was left stranded without a ride when Leavine Family Racing — under great pressure from partner Joe Gibbs Racing — had little choice but to replace DiBenedetto with Christopher Bell as the team’s driver for the 2020 season. Now a little over a year later, DiBenedetto finds himself in a strangely familiar situation with the Wood Brothers, who as a technical partner of Team Penske, are basically obligated to fill their seat for the 2021 season with the driver that Team Penske chooses. But let’s hope that by virtue of making the playoffs, DiBenedetto will get at least one more season in the Wood Brothers’ No. 21 car, however. He absolutely deserves it. 0 2 0

KUDOS TO KYLE BUSCH FOR HELPING BIG BROTHER KURT SAVOR THE MOMENT ▶

One of the coolest moments of Sunday’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway appropriately came on the cooldown lap when Kyle Busch playfully bumped into older brother Kurt’s car just moments after the elder Busch sibling had captured his first career win at the brothers’ hometown track. Kyle, who prevailed here back in 2009, already knew the feeling of winning at their home track and seemed genuinely thrilled that his big brother was finally getting to experience a similar emotion. Kudos to Kyle for putting aside what for him personally was a disappointing night and being a support to his older sibling on a night that Kurt will undoubtedly never forget. 0 2 2

Jeffrey Earnhardt BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he catches up with Jeffrey Earnhardt, a NASCAR XFINITY Series racer. ▶▶ You’ve returned to JD Motorsports this season starting at Darlington, the first race for NXS since the COVID-19 pandemic pause. Given the changes with the team and your growth as a driver, how’s your return to this hardy team been like and how encouraged are you about the progress made this season? I feel like our season has been good. We started off with a few bumps here and there. But I felt like we really progressed well and we continue to improve each weekend. And that’s kind of where I see things. If you’re seeing improvements every week, it’s a plus. All things considered, with the fact that we don’t get practice, new crew chief who’s trying to learn a new driver, there’s a lot of curveballs that’s made this a lot less accessible and I feel like we’re able to overcome those really well. I keep telling everyone that I want to be top-15 every weekend and compete there and race there the whole race long. And I feel like we’re right there on the verge of being there. We’ve had some top-15 runs but they’re not consistent. And that’s what I would like to see us get better at these last few races of the season. We’re really just trying to capitalize on the opportunity and make the best of each and every race that we have coming.

▶▶ You bring up a good point with NASCAR since the sport’s return following the COVID-19 pandemic. You started your season with the “show up and race” format, even with your savvy and experience, has it been challenging for you, have you embraced it, or have you just rolled with the punches? It’s been a challenge but it’s been a challenge for everyone in the sport. You see some of these big teams that aren’t firing off like they normally do in a race. Granted, they’re doing fine but they’re not as dominant. You have a few guys that might’ve barely missed it and be out to lunch. And it’s the same case with us. Sometimes, we get it right. Sometimes, we’re a little 0 2 6

off in the start. And sometimes, we’re off the whole damn race. You just never know with this platform but I do feel like as the year’s gone and the crew chief’s been able to understand me better as a driver in what I look for, I feel like we’ve gotten a lot better at that with unloading off the truck and being somewhat decent. Like I said, we’ve made big gains for us from that first race at Darlington as a team. I feel like that’s shown in our results on the track. And we were running 25th to 20th and now I feel like we’re running 20th to 15th. That doesn’t sound like much. But that’s a lot in our sport. It’s big when you can do that kind of stuff and do it consistently.

IN THE HOTSEAT ▶▶ How thrilled are you to have a new sponsor like ForeverLawn on your car and bringing them into NASCAR? It’s awesome to be partnered with such a great company. To bring them into the sport and introduce them As featured in to NASCAR, they’ve said they ADVERTISEMENT talked about NASCAR many years back and weren’t able to make it all come together. To now be bringing them into the NASCAR industry and targeting the demographic, it fits very well for them and it’s an honor for us. We’re very excited to have them on board.

It’s tough for a small team like us to compete. And when you’ve got these companies that come in and want to support you, it means a ton to us being a smaller team. We’re really excited to have them on board and excited for all of our partners that came on and just backed us and supported us throughout the year. I feel like we’ve brought in a numerous amount of sponsors and without those guys, we wouldn’t be able to do this. Getting ForeverLawn on board in these races is really exciting and hopefully, we can capitalize on that and extend that partnership beyond this in the future.

IN THE HOTSEAT ▶▶ Compared to your first stint with the team when you were among the youngest of the team, you have somewhat of a veteran’s perspective with teammates like Jesse Little, Ryan Vargas, and Colby Howard. What’s it been like to work with Jesse, Ryan, and Colby in terms of what they bring to the table? It’s been good. All of the guys at JD Motorsports are exceptionally talented guys. You’ve got Jesse Little and BJ McLeod and they’ve been around a little longer than Ryan Vargas and Colby Howard. Getting to see Colby and Ryan come in with very little experience, they’re asking me and everyone questions on what to expect and how to approach the race. To see how well they’ve been able to do with very little experience is awesome. Shoot, they’ve outran me! So, it’s really cool to see them come in with that very little of experience and capitalizing on this opportunity. One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that these opportunities don’t come easy. You’ve gotta make the most of them and enjoy them while they’re there. They’re definitely doing that and that’s cool to see for someone like myself that’s been through it for many years in seeing the good and the bad, it’s cool to see them come in and do as well as they have. 0 3 0

▶▶ With you and your team being so competitive this year, it’s impressive work and it has to be motivating. You’ve talked about being a fighter over the years. Given the ups and downs you’ve endured between Cup and NXS in recent years, how have you kept encouraged but also balanced with the extremes that come with being in NASCAR? It’s definitely not a sport to wear your feelings on your sleeves by any means. It’s a tough sport. It’s grueling, it’s dog eat dog, and one week you might be on top of the world, and on the next, you’re at the bottom of the barrel. Trust me, it’s tested me plenty of times. There’s things that I’ve been through and done in my life that have prepared me for being able to mentally handle that and not wanting to just throw my hands up and give up or call it quits. I think I feel like I’ve got a lot of fight and drive to want to make 0 3 2

this happen. I feel like I’ve been all over the place in the sport in the past few years. I’ve been in some of the best equipment and been knocked right out. So, it’s definitely tested me over the years but I’ve said it to many kids that have asked me what the most important advice is to making it in NASCAR. And the one thing is just never give up. No matter what gets thrown at you, don’t give up. If you want it bad enough, you’ll make it happen. That’s something that I keep beating in my head year after year to try and put something together and keep racing and be out there every week and prove myself. And I feel like I have. Our sport gets tougher and tougher each year. Finding the sponsor dollars to make it year in and year out isn’t easy. It’s a lot of money to go out there doing what we’re doing. You’ve gotta have a lot of fight to be able to make it all happen.

NATHAN LYON PREVAILS IN THE CALIFORNIA CLASH BY ROB TIONGSON f 23-year-old Nathan Lyon of St. Louis, Mo. loves the weather, it’s safe to say he outran the thunder for a special iRacing event. On Wednesday night, Lyon was one of 44 drivers entered in the California Clash, a special race paying tribute to the 30th anniversary of Days of Thunder, the famed stock car motion picture that proved to be good popcorn (or Sweet and Low sugar sachet) entertainment when bands like Depeche Mode and Aerosmith were dominating the airwaves. While Lyon wasn’t around when the movie premiered in 1990, he certainly drove a lot like Cole Trickle at the virtual

Auto Club Speedway as he challenged some of NASCAR’s best from the asphalt arena and sim racing rigs. For this special 100-lap race, it was beyond a tribute to yesteryear for NASCAR. For starters, competitors drove in stock cars that resembled the steel chariots from the 1987-90 seasons in Ford Thunderbirds, Chevrolet Monte Carlos, and Chevrolet Luminas. Also, the race recalled old rules such as racing back to

Following five intense heats, a Last Chance Qualifier, and a Fan Vote to decide the field of 44, it was surely an all-star gala with racing luminaries and a pro football icon. For this 100-lap race, the action picked off immediately despite Ray Alfalla from the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series starting from the pole. While Alfalla led the way, the first caution of the night came on Lap 6 when the No. 99 of Michael Cosey, Jr. hit the Turn 1 wall. With some takers on pit road on Lap 9 for fresh tires and fuel, the green flag waved once again on Lap 11 with Anthony Alfredo from the NASCAR XFINITY Series leading the way. However, Alfalla returned to the lead on Lap 16 as he drove past Alfredo and Casey Kirwan in a race that looked 0 3 6

like the Daytona 500. Kirwan made a gallant pass for the lead on Lap 17 before Roush Fenway Racing’s Nathan Lyon put the spurs to his No. 6 Ford Thunderbird into the lead on Lap 18. Channeling some Cole Trickle and perhaps Mark Martin in the sleek Blue Oval special, Lyon decided he wasn’t going to share the lead with any of his competitors for the next 51 laps. Meanwhile, Alfredo, who gained track position early in the race when he stayed out on Lap 9, pitted for fresh tires and fuel on Lap 34. On the heels of an aggressive strategy, Alfredo hoped the race would go clean and green as his competitors didn’t have to pit for another 30 to 40 laps.

Unfortunately, “Fast Pasta” and his clever gamble cost him track position when Donovan Strauss crashed in Turn 2. As a result, Alfredo found himself trapped a lap down since the race adhered to rules during the late 1980s/early 90’s, meaning no “Lucky Dog” free pass. Cautions started to breed more cautions with 57 to go in the Clash when Kollin Keister and Joey Stone encountered problems in Turn 4. Just five laps later, Justin Melillo was collected in a Turn 1 crash although the avid 0 3 8

Nearly 20 drivers were collected in this big incident which resulted in some drivers opting for fast repairs. KURT BUSCH CASHES IN WITH HOMETOWN LAS VEGAS WIN BY ROB TIONGSON

W

hen opportunity knocks in the world of NASCAR, it sure happens in grand fashion like with Kurt Busch’s victory in Sunday night’s South Point 400. By all means, when it seems like Busch’s chances are as slim as can be, the 42-year-old Las Vegas, Nev. delivers when it matters. Certainly, the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series champion has matured from the brash, hot shot kid who ruffled the veterans like Jimmy Spencer and Jimmie Johnson to a refined, cunning racer. Simply put, Busch finds ways to keep fighting, answering the bell on these gritty stock car arenas as he’s proven throughout his 21 years in the Cup Series. However, it hasn’t exactly been the most sparkling of seasons for the competitive racer. Until Round 30 at Las Vegas, he’s logged four 0 4 6

top-fives and 15 top-10 finishes. With an average finish of 13.3, one could say he’s been pedestrian at best. Opening the Playoffs with finishes of eighth at Darlington followed by a 13th at Richmond and 15th at Bristol, Busch entered the Round of 12 like a Mega Man video game player going to Quick Man’s stage without special items. Then again, the NASCAR Cup Series is a competitive marathon in which dominant stretches do not necessarily result in an automatic championship. Of course, as proven throughout the bulk of the history of the sport, a little bit of good luck certainly goes a long way towards glory. No, this wasn’t Benny Parsons defeating the Goliaths of NASCAR in 1973. It’s not quite Greg Sacks taking a 400-miler at Daytona in an R&D car in 1985. Heck, this wasn’t quite like AJ Allmendinger taking the Watkins Glen win over many of NASCAR Cup Series’ best talents on a road course in 2014. Instead, it was a reminder that Busch is a resilient racer who can capitalize on opportunities, whether it’s from a strong performance or fortune favoring him during a race.

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: SEPTEMBER 28, 2020

All things considered, indeed, Busch caught a huge break during a round of pit stops for the lead lap drivers. As contenders like Denny Hamlin, Alex Bowman, Kyle Busch, and Kevin Harvick pitted within the last 36 laps, trouble ensued on Lap 236. This race changing caution, stemming from debris off Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 car, was a huge break for Matt DiBenedetto, who pitted just before the caution. Moreover, this caution helped Kurt Busch, Chris Buescher, and Christopher Bell. On the other hand, it was a tough break for Hamlin, Bowman, Kyle Busch, and Harvick, who were trapped one lap down. With the quartet forced into taking the wave around prior to the Lap 243 restart, this propelled some unlikely players towards the front of the pack. With 24 laps left in the South Point 400, Kurt Busch put the spurs to his No. 1 car into the lead, scooting past Matt DiBenedetto. Despite being in clean air, Busch wasn’t exactly pulling away from DiBenedetto and the lead pack. Still, from grinding out a respectable finish to closing in on a

ROB IS RACIN’ hometown win, the normally excitable racer was quite reflective about his journey towards the finish. “My dad, my mom, they were there everyday (during the early years),” Busch said following the race. “Those thoughts were going through my head.” In order for Busch to score the sentimental win, he had to contend with a trio of variables. Chiefly, there was the Lap 256 restart following the Turn 3 on Lap 251 incident involving Erik Jones, John Hunter Nemechek, and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. Also, there was a Lap 262 caution for a multi-car accident involving William Byron, Corey LaJoie, and Christopher Bell. And most importantly, the NASCAR Overtime restart on Lap 267 in which Denny Hamlin appeared set to complete a nearly flawless race. On each of those restarts, Busch turned to his experience and savvy, evoking memories of the younger, brash Las Vegas native who won the 2004 title. Cashing in 0 5 0

on strong restarts from the outside line, Busch was not going to be denied on this late September evening. “The 11 (of Denny Hamlin) had a ton of speed,” Busch observed. “I was wide open. You just have to manipulate the draft. I knew that was our strong suit. We just put ourselves in position (to win). We did it.” Once Busch crossed the stripe to take his first win of 2020 and a golden ticket into the Round of 8, the moment started to sink in. Receiving a congratulatory “doughnut” from Kyle Busch on the cool down lap and an “atta boy” from teammate and friend Matt Kenseth, Busch performed some burnouts before clambering out of his winning ride. In spite of a spectator free track, Busch soaked in his emotional feat. Understandably moved by his latest win, Busch took the checkered flag and tapped each letter that spells “Las Vegas.”

ROB IS RACIN’

For a driver who’s won the Daytona 500, the Coca-Cola 600, swept Bristol in 2003, and persevered through personal challenges from 2005 to ‘15, his Las Vegas victory might’ve taken the cake. “This is what kids dream of when they grow up racing,” Busch said. “You dream of winning at your hometown track. For two decades, it’s kicked my butt. One of those quirky (crew chief) Matt McCall pit sequences finally unfolded.” A few weeks ago, Busch seemed like a “discount” championship pick. He was like that bargain store purchase among the prestigious names like younger brother Kyle and title favorites like Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, and Martin Truex, Jr. On Sunday night, the pride of Las Vegas reminded all of us that he might just be the one you’d want to consider not just as a dark horse Playoff threat. Instead, he’s a genuine championship pick, someone that cannot be dismissed any longer. Is history repeating itself? In 2004, he won three times but he only had 10 top-fives and 21 top-10’s to log an average finish of 12.5. This year, after 30 races, he’s got the Las Vegas win, five top-fives, and 16 top-10’s to nab a 12.9 average finish. 0 5 2

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: SEPTEMBER 28, 2020

Besides the fact that Busch is sneaky good and lucky, he’s someone who thrives in challenging ordeals. Busch’s fifth-place finish in the 2004 season finale at Homestead wasn’t incident free when he nearly hit the wall on pit road entry after a tire came off his car. That smart, heads up driving by Busch essentially sealed his fate and opportunity to win the 2004 Cup title. Yes, the Playoffs format in 2004 and ‘20 are different, the tracks and cars are different, and the drivers that Busch battles for a Cup title are not the same. However, Busch and his Chip Ganassi Racing team are legitimate championship contenders in 2020. Devoid of any worries until the Round of 8 in mid-October, Busch has two more chances to cash in on Playoff points and wins. With his Las Vegas win, he can head into Talladega and Charlotte without anything to lose. “That’s part of this system and it’s sinking in,” Busch remarked. “No Talladega worries, no ROVAL worries.”

NHRA’S BIG PROBLEM WITH COCA-COLA In this week’s episode of Danny B Needs a Minute, Danny B takes on a slight detour from the whirlwind of NASCAR news last week for a brief look at the sponsorship debacle facing NHRA and Coca-Cola. Well, maybe not a complete detour, as Danny still has a take on the big schedule shuffle that went down in Texas. When it comes to the drag racing world, there’s a lot of similarities as far as sponsorship troubles go. There are contracts and 0 5 4

expectations, and agreements that have to be kept to. Danny takes us through the recent kerfuffle between the NHRA’s governing body and their long time top level sponsor, Coca-Cola. The lawsuit focuses around their subsidiary brand, Mello Yello, and it’s involvement with the sport. Danny takes us through the ins and outs of what’s being claimed, and the logic each one is using in the battle. How will it all shake out? Check out Danny’s analysis in the video!

hree-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip concluded his Hall of Fame driving career in car No. 66. After winning 84 races in cars carrying Nos. 88, 11 and 17, Waltrip made the final 55 starts of his career in the No. 66 Big Kmart/ Route 66 Fords owned by Travis Carter and Carl Haas.

Waltrip climbed from the cockpit of the No. 66 car for the final time on Nov. 20, 2000, after finishing 34th in the season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 66 in the NASCAR Cup Series have visited Victory Lane only once while recording 60 top-10 finishes in 781 starts. A total of 104 drivers have wheeled car No. 66 in at least one race. Herschel Buchanan was the first to race No. 66 in the NASCAR Cup Series when he finished 39th in the Feb. 5, 1950, event at the Beach & Road Course in Daytona Beach, Florida. Buchanan completed only three laps in a 1947 Nash. Larry Frank is the only driver to win in car No. 66. Driving a 1962 Ford, Frank led 85 of the 364 laps en route to winning the Southern 500 on Sept. 3, 1962, at Darlington Raceway. Jeff Green has the most starts (68) in car No. 66 while current driver Timmy Hill is second on that list with 61.
