The Drama Continues at Atlanta A High Speed Track Should Keep Things Close By Jared Turner
T
he 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season began in predictably chaotic fashion with a controversial finish, a bunch of frustrated drivers and a plethora of torn-up sheet metal. Don’t expect things to settle down much in Sunday’s Folds of Honor Quiktrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway — a high-speed
1.54-mile track known for close finishes and an abrasive racing surface that chews up rubber at an alarming rate and creates a handful for drivers to navigate. Considering that AMS was last repaved more than two decades ago, in 1997, it’s no wonder the popular track in Hampton, Georgia, tends to produce some of the most exciting races on the Monster Energy Series schedule. Sunday’s showdown should be no different, especially in light of the fact that most drivers are eager to either atone for or build on Daytona — depending on how atlanta preview: february 22, 2018

their day turned out. “We’ve got a lot of momentum heading to Atlanta,” said rookie Darrell Wallace Jr., who finished second in his first Daytona 500 start. “I don’t know what we’re going to have there, but I’m pumped. We’re good.” Arriving at Atlanta feeling not as good are those who had a chance to win at Daytona but saw their day
end abruptly with their involvement in a multi-car crash. One of those drivers, 2004 series champion Kurt Busch, expects Atlanta to present its own share of challenges this weekend. “It’s a tough, tough race,” Busch said. “The asphalt is worn out and the tires have a hard time maintaining pace. All of those factors combined make this a very challenging race. I won a
couple of spring races in a row at Atlanta in 2009 and 2010 — races when it was nice and cool out. It’s a very different racetrack in cool and hot conditions.” The Atlanta surface has even proven sensitive to the driver who is now the reigning Monster Energy Series champion. “Atlanta is a real handful, no doubt about that,” Martin Truex Jr. said. “With tires

race preview wearing out so quickly, we’re going to have a hard time making a full fuel run on a set of tires without having issues.” AMS is finally scheduled for a repave before the Monster Energy Series returns in 2019, but that does little to help drivers this weekend. “The key to being successful at Atlanta is to have a balance with the short and long-run speeds,” Truex said. “You definitely need a mixture of both. If it comes down to a late-race restart, you must have the ability to go fast for a short run. If it goes long green-flag runs, you can find yourself in trouble if you’re having issues with long-run speed. It will be interesting to see how short the fuel runs will be with the tire wear.” One driver hoping for especially big things this weekend is Dawsonville, Georgia native Chase Elliott. AMS provides a welcome sight for the

second-generation driver, who is now 0-for-78 in premier series starts. “It’s always been a special place to me,” Elliott said. “My dad (1988 premier series champion Bill Elliott) and I have done a lot of racing here on the frontstretch, whether it be a Bandolero or Legends car. I can remember racing the Legends when the Cup cars were in town.
I’m excited to be part of the show and hopefully put on a good one for the fans. For us and a lot of guys, Atlanta is like that Week One for our season because we’re going to see racetracks like this more so as we go. I’m excited to get there. It’s my home track and is as close to home as I’m going to get on the NASCAR circuit, so I think that’s special.”

▶▶ Fresh off a thrilling victory in the Daytona 500, Austin Dillon will try to accomplish the rare feat of opening a season with back-to-back wins. Though that’s unlikely to happen, stranger things have happened. ▶▶ After a bitterly disappointing outcome at Daytona where his shot at victory went down the drain with a multi-car wreck, Chase Elliott returns home to Georgia with a chance to capture his long-awaited first win. ▶▶ Ryan Blaney was downright impressive in the Daytona 500, leading more than half the race in his debut as a full-time Monster Energy Series driver for Team Penske. He’ll try to close the deal at Atlanta. ▶▶ Prior to last year’s race at Atlanta, Jimmie Johnson had scored backto-back victories at the 1.54-mile quad-oval track. A win this year would tie him with Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison for fourth on the all-time win list. ▶▶ One of the favorites to go to Victory Lane at the Daytona 500, Brad Keselowski instead finished the day in the garage with a torn-up car. He’ll try to atone for that disappointment at Atlanta, where he’s the defending race winner.

R
ichie Evans was one of the most successful short-track drivers in the history of American auto racing. A native of Rome, New York, Evans left his family’s farm as a teenager to work in a local garage and soon began drag racing. An associate eventually suggested he build a hobby stock car to race at nearby UticaRome Speedway and his oval-track career began in 1962.

Evans eventually graduated to asphalt modifieds and he drove his familiar orangeand-black No. 61 B.R. DeWitt-sponsored entry to victory at tracks up and down the East Coast. During his 20 years of racing modifieds, Evans earned 26 track championships and more than 475 feature victories. recipient of the modified division’s Most Popular Driver Award. “I’m proud of modified racing,” Evans was once quoted as saying. “It’s more popular in the Northeast than any other kind of racing, and I haven’t found anything I’d rather do than race.” Evans was 44 years old
when he was killed on Oct. 24, 1985, while practicing for a NASCAR modified race at Virginia’s Martinsville Speedway. He had already clinched the 1985 NASCAR modified title prior to his fatal crash at the half-mile track. Evans was inducted into the NASCAR Hall Fame in 2012.

A Dual Threat Parker Kligerman Will Mix Racing and Reporting By Joseph Wolkin
P
arker Kligerman is geared up to return to NBC Sports in 2018. But on the weekends he isn’t on pit road serving as a reporter, he’ll be driving the No. 75 truck for Henderson Motorsports. What is the environment like over there? Is it more of an intimate experience to work with a smaller team? “It’s more intimate and it’s more family-
oriented. The Hendersons, myself and Chris, we’re all just a big family. There’s no contracts. There’s no politics or anything. We just build the best racetruck we can, I drive the best I can, and we go out and see if we can win a race. It’s very fun and gratifying. There’s always pressure to succeed, but it’s an enjoyable pressure.” What was it like to run competitively with such a small team this past year? “I don’t think I was surprised because I know how good Chris Carrier is at setting up the trucks. When we decided to do the [No.] 75 deal when I was at the [No.] 92, even having a little bit of success with them, I just knew with what the [No.] 75 team was planning to do, I just felt like it was a real positive way to go. When we first started, it was about checking off boxes.” You also have your NBC gig. How do you feel like the dual roles worked out for you? “Knowing that I ran eight races and that one XFINITY Series race, it was great because I work with incredible people at NBC that allow me to do it. If they weren’t so supportive and on board to support me jumping in a truck every couple of weeks, then it wouldn’t have been so great. They understand it only helps me on the TV side, giving me a better perspective and more information. I think it was a win-win for everyone.” atlanta preview: february 22, 2018

Living His Dream DiBlasi Has Come Far in NASCAR BY BEN WHITE
T
ommy DiBlasi, tire specialist for Furniture Row Racing and driver Martin Truex Jr., traveled an interesting path toward becoming a championship crew member in NASCAR’s premier Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. The native of Annapolis, Md. received his business administration degree from West Virginia University in 2006. He instead followed his heart in hopes of landing a fulltime job in NASCAR. “Where we lived, NASAR wasn’t too big,” DiBlasi said. “All my friends were wearing
Ravens t-shirts and Orioles t-shirts and I was wearing Ernie Irvan t-shirts.” After moving to North Carolina in 2007, DiBlasi met several crew members while working a part-time job waiting tables near Charlotte Motor Speedway. They helped him find a job in the Hooters Pro Cup and ARCA Series as a tire changer. The Camping World Truck Series followed in 2010, before the move to the Cup series with BK Racing in 2013. DeBlasi joined Furniture Row Racing in January of 2015 in part while in Denver, Colo. during a leisurely visit. There to see childhood friend Jordan Woodward of Denver Broncos fame, he visited the Furniture Row team and was offered an interview with the organization. He was proud to be a part of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship in 2017 as tire specialist for the No. 78 FRR Toyotas. Both he and Woodward realized their dreams of winning championships in NASCAR and the NFL. “Winning the championship was exciting,” DiBlasi said. “I really enjoy doing the tires. It’s just me. The tires are the only four things that touch the ground. The more I pay attention to them, the more consistent they are, and the better the car will be. If the tires aren’t balanced correctly, it’s not going to go as well as the engineers expect it to.” atlanta preview: february 22, 2018

Motorsports safety group makes racing safer By Dan Guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness
training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes and to provide racing’s brandloyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. Dr. Cormier is particularly qualified to speak to the relationship between racing and safety since he races
shifter karts professionally. He’s been interested in the sport for as long as he can remember. “With any racer, it probably starts outside the car,” Cormier said. “I can recall doing things as silly as racing to see who gets to the door first. I was racing on lawn mowers with my brothers at the age of 6.” Cormier now races go-karts at top speeds of up to 130 mph. He has established relationships with multiple racing organizations, such as ARCA, NASCAR, Formula One, USAC and NHRA. “What I love about racing is being able to push the limits of the impossible to the edge, and nudge it,” Cormier said. “There’s an adrenaline rush that comes with it that is indescribable. Racers will say it’s the body and soul’s way of breathing, but being able to push that machine and your

spoltight skill set to the limit engages an unbridled adrenalin rush more than anything.” As an internationally recognized brain surgeon, Cormier has been able to engage companies to establish new technologies to diagnose and rehabilitate head injuries. He is now augmenting his current efforts on prevention. “Motorsports Safety Group is excited that we’ve come this far in such a short time,” Cormier said. “We owe a great deal to both the drivers and the racing organizations for embracing our insight.” Cormier has found that his racing background gives him more credibility when talking with race teams. “I am able speak to and understand the lingo – whether it’s regarding G forces, drafting, tire grading, steering pull, tire/ shocks ratios, etc.,” Cormier explained, “and on the other side, implications and educating from a medical
prevention and intervention standpoint. “I’m not just a doctor who comes in saying, ‘We’re trying to get you out of this car,’” Cormier said. “My approach is to try to prepare them appropriately so they can enjoy the sport longer and walk away from the sport with their faculties, to better enjoy retirement and most importantly, to remember it!.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “It would be difficult to say to someone, ‘You’re pushing the limits a bit too much,’” Cormier said. “The racerathletes will continue to defy the odds and challenge the physics of what they believe should happen. To stymie that progression and excitement they bring to themselves and the

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.
who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,
Oliva released its Serie V to great acclaim and in 2007 it was rated 4th best cigar with a 93 rating. Oliva cigars continually ranks as one of the best cigars of the year. In 2012, the family released a new Serie V the Melanio edition to honor the man who started it all. Two years later in 2014, the Serie V Melanio would be named the Cigar of the Year with a 96 rating! Near perfection. Just this year, the Serie V rated a 95 and
was the number 3 cigar of the year for 2017. In addition, to the highly rated Serie cigars, Oliva also makes the Nub, which also makes the year’s best cigar list. In fact, Oliva cigars have remained on Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 cigars of the year for 12 years straight. On top of that, Oliva believes in keeping prices in check. The company’s cigars start at under $4 and go up to about $15. The highly rated Serie V belicoso is just over $8.00 depending on local taxes.

fter nearly 20 years as a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. sealed the deal and drove his final series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November. The third-generational racer from Kannapolis, North Carolina, recorded 26 wins – including two Daytona 500s – 149 top-five results, 260 top-10 finishes and 15 pole positions during his career 21-year in NASCAR’s premier series career. His best points finish was third in 2003 behind champion Matt Kenseth. One of the most beloved drivers in NASCAR history, Earnhardt enjoyed a huge following. He had been plagued by concussions during
the last few years and missed half of the 2016 season. After careful consideration, he announced his retirement last April. The winner of 15 consecutive Most Popular Driver Awards has moved from the driver’s seat to the broadcast booth with NBC Sports. “After driving, you’ve got to find something to be passionate about, and I think I might have found that with broadcasting and, obviously, still owning JR Motorsports,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “It’s time for somebody else to get in this (Hendrick Motorsports) car. It’s a great opportunity for Alex (Bowman) and I’m excited to see what he can do.
