HAPPY HARVICK. Kevin Harvick was, once again, the dominant driver at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Sunday, he got his first win in 17 years to show for it. Harvick’s first win at Atlanta came in 2001 in one of the most iconic finishes in modern NASCAR history when he beat Jeff Gordon to the finish line for Richard Childress Racing’s first victory since the death of Dale Earnhardt. He hadn’t won at the track since. GETTY IMAGES

The Denny Hamlin/ Bubba Wallace Feud Still Simmers By jared turner

he feud that began between Denny Hamlin and Darrell Wallace Jr. during Speedweeks continues to simmer. After colliding while battling for second on the final lap of the Daytona 500, the two drivers had harsh words for each other during their post-race banter, and later texted each other. After arriving at Atlanta Motor Speedway five days later, Wallace revealed that he is no longer part of Hamlin’s recreational basketball or golf league. “I have been removed from both,” Wallace said during his pre-race media availability on Friday. “Although, I didn’t get the direct text. It went through like five or six people. That is classy, I guess. I have been told the golf league was out. I removed myself from the basketball league just after the conversation we had that day. I was like, ‘Whatever. I guess I’m not coming back.’ That is okay.” atlanta rearview: february 26, 2018

The Veterans Still Have It

uch of the buzz entering the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season centered around NASCAR’s crop of young, talented drivers who appear poised to carry the sport into the future and help attract a younger generation of fans. Appropriately, those drivers managed to showcase their talent and skills in the season-opening Daytona 500 where four of the top seven finishers — including race winner Austin Dillon and second-place finisher Darrell Wallace Jr. — were under the age of 30. Sunday’s race at Atlanta was a different story, however, as the top eight finishers were all members of the 30 and over club. In fact, no driver under 30 even led a lap at Atlanta. Meanwhile, Kevin Harvick — who at age 42 is one of the oldest drivers in the sport — led a race-high 181 laps on the way to a commanding victory. Indeed, it was a good day for the veterans. atlanta rearview: february 26, 2018

NASCAR Remains A Tough Sell At Atlanta

D

3

id you see the size of the crowd at Atlanta Motor Speedway for Saturday’s Xfinity Series race and Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race? To describe it as sparse would be an understatement. While a forecast of rain for Sunday afternoon certainly didn’t help matters any, what should have helped — but seemingly didn’t — was the fact that temperatures were unseasonably warm for late February. It appears, however, that — for whatever reason — NASCAR and the suburban Atlanta track still can’t figure out how to making racing resonate with fans in the greater Atlanta area. This despite the drivers for the most part being big fans of Atlanta Motor Speedway’s aging, abrasive racing surface, which they enjoy racing on because of how difficult it makes their cars to drive and because of the passing opportunities created by that difficulty. atlanta rearview: february 26, 2018

Hendrick Motorsports Has Some Work To Do

I

t was a pretty miserable Sunday afternoon for Hendrick Motorsports, which placed just one of its four drivers — 10th-place finisher Chase Elliott — in the top 10 at day’s end. This after the organization failed to even crack the top 15 in the season-opening Daytona 500 where Alex Bowman, in 17th place, was the highest finishing Hendrick driver. Particularly worrisome for Hendrick after two races is the performance of its senior driver, seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, who spun out at Atlanta and limped home in 27th after finishing 38th in the Daytona 500. After two races, Johnson is 35th in the standings. While it’s certainly too early in the season for the Hendrick organization to hit the proverbial panic button, the early signs don’t bode particularly well. The pressure will start to really mount if the organization fails to see improvement this weekend at Las Vegas. atlanta rearview: february 26, 2018

Kevin Harvick Is More Dominant At Atlanta Than Meets The Eye

K

1

evin Harvick’s win at Atlanta was just his second victory in 28 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series starts at the 1.54-mile track. Don’t be fooled by Harvick’s relatively modest winning percentage here, however. He’s been a lot more dominant at Atlanta — especially in recent years — than what meets the eye. In fact, Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 marked the fifth consecutive Monster Energy Series race at Atlanta where Harvick has led the most laps. But, unlike the previous four races, he closed the deal and went to Victory Lane this time. Harvick’s success at Atlanta over the past several years is particularly impressive considering that from 2002-2007 he failed to even crack the top 10 in Monster Energy Series competition at the high-speed, high-banked track — which at the time was hosting two annual Monster Energy Series races instead of just one. atlanta rearview: february 26, 2018

I’M JUST SAYIN’ Kevin Harvick held up three fingers as a tribute to the late Dale Earnhardt. GETTY IMAGES

Harvick’s Tribute To Dale Sr. Was In Order By Jared Turner

K

evin Harvick’s win at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday was his first at the track since the emotionally charged victory he scored in March 2001 just three races after taking over the seat formerly occupied by the late Dale Earnhardt. On that day in 2001, Harvick paid tribute to Earnhardt by holding three fingers out the window while making a victory lap as fans cheered and tears flowed. While Harvick’s win on Sunday was far less suspenseful than 17 years earlier when he

edged Jeff Gordon at the checkered flag by .006 seconds, his latest Atlanta win was still emotional as he reflected back on that day in 2001. “It was fun to be able to actually pay tribute and smile about what was going on in the night, unlike in 2001 when you didn’t know if you should actually stick your hand out the window, or if somebody was going to be offended or somebody was going to be mad, or whether it was the right thing to do or wrong thing to do, and it was your first win,” Harvick said. “So there was just a lot of confusing things [in 2001]. If felt good to pay tribute to that [on Sunday] and park it in Victory Lane with a smile on my face and watch everybody smile with me.” Even though Harvick no longer drives Earnhardt’s old car or even competes for Richard Childress Racing, the organization with which Earnhardt spent most of his career, Harvick still found it appropriate on Sunday to pay tribute to the legendary driver whose life was tragically cut short on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. For being so humble, Harvick deserves a lot of credit. Even with all his success, the 2014 series champ clearly hasn’t forgotten how he got here. atlanta rearview: february 26, 2018

An Affordable Solution for Improving DownRoad Visibility

W

ho would like to see farther down the road when driving at night? Virtually everyone, of course. OSRAM SYLVANIA, the world’s leader in automotive lighting, can make that widely held desire a reality. And the best part of all is that owning an expensive vehicle is not a

prerequisite. That’s because the SilverStar ULTRA – SYLVANIA’s farthest down road halogen headlight – fits more than 90 percent of all vehicles on the road. Are your lights starting to grow dim? Need a better, clearer view of the road? The SilverStar ULTRA is the quickest, easiest and most affordable remedy. “It’s a simple change,” said Brian Noble, marketing manager for OSRAM SYLVANIA. “What we’re trying to say is this is for the masses. This isn’t for niche vehicles. This is for the vast

When choosing a particular automotive headlight, multiple considerations generally come into play. One is the headlight’s lifespan. Another is the color that the headlight projects. And yet another is how far the headlight allows a driver to see down the road. And, of course, there’s always the price tag. Cost-conscious consumers are forced to sacrifice in one area or another, but the

spotlight majority of vehicles on the road. There’s an easy way to upgrade, an easy way to add value to your car so you can see better when driving. These lights are basically better lighting for improved safety when driving at night.” How surprised are drivers to learn that they don’t have to be in the nicest car to have the most premium headlight? “When we go to activation programs, NASCAR events and festivals, the general population has no

idea,” Noble said. “Auto enthusiasts – roughly 15 percent of the population – they would know about better halogen headlights. But the other 85 percent have never thought about it. They think their headlights are what their headlights are and that’s their only choice.” Research conducted by SYLVANIA indicates that 40 percent of drivers feel unsafe, uncomfortable or nervous when driving at night. A new pair of SilverStar ULTRA headlights

suddenly makes driving at night a lot less stressful. “The driving population consists of 200 million registered drivers,” Noble said. “So, 80 million people are saying, ‘I’m feeling uncomfortable or unsafe when driving at night.’ And some percentage of that is not driving at night – they’re just not going out, they’re coming home early and giving up part of the full day because they’re just nervous about going out, and they don’t feel safe. So, they’re just not going to

Checks two Boxes - CON’T SilverStar ULTRA checks at least two boxes: It’s affordable and it offers terrific down-road visibility. “If I am seeing farther down road and I don’t have an option to change color and it’s just normal natural color, the headlight’s lifespan is going to be shorter,” Noble explained. “If I’m seeing farther down road and I’m making it a

whiter color, life is going to be even shorter. So, it’s a tradeoff: Would you rather see better and see farther, or would you rather have a long-life light bulb. You can’t have both. If you want to have both, you have to buy either LED or HID headlights new with a vehicle. Instead of $50 headlight bulbs, that could be a $2,000 headlight package on your vehicle.

“When you think about farther down the road, $50 is a good price point to help you and your family see more, see better. You may have to change your headlights every year or two, but is it worth it? I would say yes.” Indeed, it is. “There’s no good reason to not want to see better when driving at night,” Noble

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.

who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in

Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,

Oliva released its Serie V to great acclaim and in 2007 it was rated 4th best cigar with a 93 rating. Oliva cigars continually ranks as one of the best cigars of the year. In 2012, the family released a new Serie V the Melanio edition to honor the man who started it all. Two years later in 2014, the Serie V Melanio would be named the Cigar of the Year with a 96 rating! Near perfection. Just this year, the Serie V rated a 95 and

was the number 3 cigar of the year for 2017. In addition, to the highly rated Serie cigars, Oliva also makes the Nub, which also makes the year’s best cigar list. In fact, Oliva cigars have remained on Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 cigars of the year for 12 years straight. On top of that, Oliva believes in keeping prices in check. The company’s cigars start at under $4 and go up to about $15. The highly rated Serie V belicoso is just over $8.00 depending on local taxes.

“What I love about racing is being able to push the limits of the impossible to the edge, and nudge it.” – Dr. Jason Cormier, Motorsports Safety Group

Motorsports safety group makes racing safer By Dan Guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness

training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes and to provide racing’s brandloyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. Dr. Cormier is particularly qualified to speak to the relationship between racing and safety since he races

shifter karts professionally. He’s been interested in the sport for as long as he can remember. “With any racer, it probably starts outside the car,” Cormier said. “I can recall doing things as silly as racing to see who gets to the door first. I was racing on lawn mowers with my brothers at the age of 6.” Cormier now races go-karts at top speeds of up to 130 mph. He has established relationships with multiple racing organizations, such as ARCA, NASCAR, Formula One, USAC and NHRA. “What I love about racing is being able to push the limits of the impossible to the edge, and nudge it,” Cormier said. “There’s an adrenaline rush that comes with it that is indescribable. Racers will say it’s the body and soul’s way of breathing, but being able to push that machine and your

spoltight skill set to the limit engages an unbridled adrenalin rush more than anything.” As an internationally recognized brain surgeon, Cormier has been able to engage companies to establish new technologies to diagnose and rehabilitate head injuries. He is now augmenting his current efforts on prevention. “Motorsports Safety Group is excited that we’ve come this far in such a short time,” Cormier said. “We owe a great deal to both the drivers and the racing organizations for embracing our insight.” Cormier has found that his racing background gives him more credibility when talking with race teams. “I am able speak to and understand the lingo – whether it’s regarding G forces, drafting, tire grading, steering pull, tire/ shocks ratios, etc.,” Cormier explained, “and on the other side, implications and educating from a medical

prevention and intervention standpoint. “I’m not just a doctor who comes in saying, ‘We’re trying to get you out of this car,’” Cormier said. “My approach is to try to prepare them appropriately so they can enjoy the sport longer and walk away from the sport with their faculties, to better enjoy retirement and most importantly, to remember it!.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “It would be difficult to say to someone, ‘You’re pushing the limits a bit too much,’” Cormier said. “The racerathletes will continue to defy the odds and challenge the physics of what they believe should happen. To stymie that progression and excitement they bring to themselves and the

public, it would render them unrecognizable to both the public and to themselves. “My role is to educate them as to how they can be safer and MSG is excited about the technology that we hope will help prevent or reduce concussions, and so far there are very promising results that will help mitigate those causational vectors of force.” For the specifics on that new technology, race fans will have to stay tuned. “Our team has put real thought into who we’ve engaged and the racing organizations that we’ve engaged,” Cormier said. “We hope to introduce new technology in 2018 with a plan to build 300 to 400 percent of what we did in 2017. There are many more exciting things to come. We thank all of you for embracing our insight and we encourage you to follow us on social media and speak to us when you see us on the track.”

Coolant leak failures can be repaired with K-Seal.

Not Your Grandfather’s Stop Leak

C

oolant leak failures are one of the most common reasons for roadside breakdowns. It’s that dreaded feeling when you realize that you’ve got a coolant leak. Maybe it’s the radiator, or the water pump, or worse – the head or the block. You’re likely looking at a bill of hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars to get your vehicle

back on the road. In the past, the early days, you may have been told to try adding pepper, egg, coffee grounds, or even mustard powder in the cooling system to get that leak stopped. More recently someone may have told you to try a stop leak common on the shelves of most auto parts stores. But a lot of those products

contain sodium silicate or liquid glass, the same ingredient they used to seize the engines during “Cash for Clunkers.” Sure the radiator might have been plugged but often other parts of the cooling system were too! But hold on. What if there was a safe way for you to get your trusty friend back on the road for less than

spotlight the cost of a KFC family meal? Well there is, with K-Seal Multi-Purpose Permanent Coolant Leak Repair. Made in the USA, K-Seal is a global bestselling cooling system leak sealer with over 6 million bottles sold. It’s a favorite with professional technicians and here’s what a few of them had to say about it recently: “It’s like magic. If it was the 17th century those who make it would be burned at the stake.” “It’s about the only thing I’ve heard that works. We sell it by the caseload.” “I’ve repaired many a car with K-Seal and I know it works.” (Actual testimonial from independent market survey

Dec 2017) We asked Patrick O’Brien, CEO of K-Seal, what makes K-Seal different from all the other stop leaks on the shelf? “K-Seal is the next generation stop leak technology,” O’Brien said. “We’ve developed a ceramic microfiber formula that is safe to use with all types of coolant / antifreeze. Plus, K-Seal was the first multi-purpose formula designed to fix leaks in all hard parts of the cooling system, including the head, head gasket, block, radiator, heater core, water pump casing and freeze plug. It’s safe to use in all water cooled engines from motor cycles right up to heavy duty trucks, and

everything in between. It even fixed a leak on a Top Fuel dragster, and when K-Seal makes a repair it is permanent. It’s way beyond your Grandfather’s old stop leak.” “K-Seal is the only product to have been independently university tested to the ASTM standard for coolant leak repair products. This means it will seal a leak when it’s meant to but it positively will not block even the narrowest waterways in the cooling system. Plus K-Seal is safe for use with aluminium heads including the Northstar block.” www.kseal.com

Work Hard, Play Hard Drivers Focus on Strength and Conditioning

T

o have power on the race track, it’s a good idea for NASCAR drivers to engage in some powerful strength-and-conditioning efforts. Success on the track and dedication to physical fitness seem to go hand in hand. Here’s what seventime Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie

Johnson and five other drivers do to stay in shape: JIMMIE JOHNSON: Good luck finding a driver more committed to physical fitness and power activities than Johnson. An avid cyclist, runner and swimmer, Johnson has competed in numerous half marathons and triathlons, including a Half Iron Man where he placed 15th overall. Johnson is also an avid snow skier. “I’ve always had a focus on

endurance-based workouts, but maybe been a little more strength focused the last few years,” he said. “Staying active is key and very, very important. It takes time and commitment to get it all done, but it’s been great for me. I think it’s very important for my profession, and certainly to add longevity and stay healthy long term.” TY DILLON: Last season, Dillon entered a combined 66 races among NASCAR’s three major series. On 27 weekends, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series rookie pulled double duty by also running the Xfinity Series race. That’s a busy schedule, to be certain, and one not survived without some powerful conditioning. “I work out pretty hard in the offseason and do a lot of mountain biking to try and keep up my conditioning,” Dillon said. “The biggest thing [with doing double duty at a place like Bristol]

atlanta rearview: february 26, 2018

spotlight is to come in properly hydrated and prepare to be in the car for almost three days, all day long.” DENNY HAMLIN: Hamlin dropped close to 40 pounds between his rookie Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season of 2006 and 2010. He’s since managed to keep the weight off. Hamlin’s secret? Pilates. “I spend a lot of time doing Pilates – twice a week at least. I’ll go to the Pilates studio and do an hour or so there – and then strength training in between,” Hamlin said. “Usually, if I’m at home during the week, I’ll go the gym. I never really miss a day. Never take any rest days off other than when I’m on the race track on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday.” AUSTIN DILLON: When Dillon joined the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2014, the young driver stepped up

his fitness regimen since Monster Energy Series races are considerably longer than the races he’d entered at NASCAR’s lower levels. The decision proved wise. “If I did anything better, it was just eating right leading up to the race and getting stronger all around,” Dillon noted. “I have done cardio stuff, but I think strength is one of the biggest things. And I lift weights now quite a bit, but it’s just a combination of the two of them that allows your body to withstand a long race.” KASEY KAHNE: “Early in the season I seem to work out a good bit more than the last half of the season or the middle part of the year when it’s the hottest outside,” Kahne explained. “After a long Sunday race on a 95-degree day, I’m pretty dehydrated, so I would say I back it down a little bit in the mid-part of the

summer. Other than that, I’ll work out five or six times a week. I maybe run one mile, do 50 push-ups, sit-ups, pullups, squats or something like that. And then run another mile and do three to four sets of that.”
