▶▶ Bristol Motor Speedway’s half-mile race track traditionally produces the sport’s most intense action and tempers often soar beyond the boiling point, resulting in bent fenders and bruised egos. Bristol is one of only three short tracks on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule, along with Richmond and Martinsville. Joey Logano, who here in August 2015, has quickly become one of the most respected short-track racers in NASCAR.

The Crazy Continues Bristol’s Short Track Should Bring Drama By Jared Turner

ast Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway was a wild and chaotic affair marred by hard crashes and drama on pit road. Don’t expect things to calm down at all this weekend at half-mile, high-banked notoriously crazy Bristol Motor Speedway — a .533-mile short track that has been the site of

some of the most exciting and controversial moments in NASCAR history. They call Bristol “Thunder Valley” and “The Last Great Colosseum” for a reason, so no one will be surprised if the Tennessee short track lives up to its famous monikers in Sunday’s Food City 500. “Bristol Motor Speedway is one of the best racetracks on the circuit,” said Kyle Busch, a six-time winner in Thunder Valley and the winner of last Sunday’s race in Texas. “All the fans love it because of the excitement, the run-ins and the close-quarter action with all the cars being packed on top of one another bristol preview: april 12, 2018

With the fans, the atmosphere there always makes for a good time.” Clint Bowyer, who won at .526-mile Martinsville Speedway last month, calls Bristol “a whole different gremlin.” “Martinsville is like an old Sunday afternoon cruise,” Bowyer said. “You go to Bristol and there’s not room

to breathe. You have to be on your game. Technically, high on my radar. Coming off a short track win, you can’t help but to look forward to Bristol. It’s another place that is so special to all of us because you know how difficult it is to win there.” Indeed it is. Winning at Bristol requires not only having a terrific car; it also requires being around at the finish — something easier

said than done at a place where fender-banging action is a way of life. “Bristol is a tough place,” third-year Monster Energy Series driver Chase Elliott said. “It’s very challenging. You get in traffic a lot, and you get in tough situations. It’s important to have your car driving well and be able to do something different than a guy ahead of you.” Elliott, of course, is still in

race preview pursuit of his first Monster Energy Series win. The same is true for Hendrick Motorsports teammate Alex Bowman, who replaced Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the No. 88 car this season. Like Elliott, Bowman fully recognizes the challenges that racing at Bristol presents. “In the race you’ve really just got to stay out of trouble,” said Bowman, whose four previous starts at Bristol came with the underfunded BK Racing and Tommy Baldwin Racing teams. “It’s easy to get in trouble and have stuff go on with a small track where there’s not a lot of room to avoid stuff. You’ve just got to stay out of trouble all day and be there at the end. Track position’s really, really key here, so qualifying is very important. Just getting the car dialed in and handling well in practice is definitely going to be important.” And if Bowman could

somehow manage to leave The Last Great Colosseum with a big trophy in hand? “This is one of the coolest places we go, so winning Bristol would be really special,” he said. Ryan Newman, a veteran driver who is winless in 32 starts in Thunder Valley, agrees with Bowman about the significance of a Bristol

win. A victory here is high on his bucket list. And, of course, there’s no time like the present to get it done. “You always want to win Bristol,” Newman said. “I mean, it’s nice to survive Bristol with a car all in one piece, but when you get to the end, I think I’d rather be in contention and get the win.”

▶▶ Kyle Busch has a lot of reason for optimism heading to Bristol. He’s been stellar in 2018. He’s coming off a win at Texas. And he’s a six-time Bristol winner. Beyond any doubt, he’s the favorite going into the weekend. ▶▶ A winner of three of the season’s first seven races, Kevin Harvick continues to be fast everywhere the Monster Energy Series goes. He’s a former winner at Bristol and should factor heavily into the mix come Sunday afternoon. ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson is the defending winner of the Bristol spring race — which makes the seven-time champion worth watching this weekend despite the fact that his performance has been downright dreadful in 2018. ▶▶ It’s hard to count out Clint Bowyer at Bristol, especially after the Stewart-Haas Racing driver’s recent win at Martinsville — the first short track on the 2018 schedule. Bowyer finished second in Thunder Valley one year ago. ▶▶ Although winless in 24 Bristol starts, Martin Truex Jr. is the reigning series champion and has been fast just about everywhere he’s raced in 2018. riven by a passion for automobiles, Ray Evernham started working on race cars at age 15, and the New Jersey native never looked back. After several years behind the wheel of a modified, Evernham had the opportunity to serve as crew chief and mentor for a young, open-wheel driver from California who was transitioning to NASCAR racing. Evernham eventually guided Jeff Gordon

and the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team to three Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championships in four seasons (1995, 1997 and 1998) and a series-leading 47 victories during the 1990s. Among their triumphs were two Daytona 500s (1997 and 1999), three Coca-Cola 600s (1994, 1997 and 1998) and two Brickyard 400s (1994 and 1998). direction, the “Rainbow Warriors” redefined the art of the pit stop. At the end of the 1999 season, Evernham left Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports to become a team owner, leading Dodge’s return to NASCAR racing. His drivers won 13 times before he sold majority ownership of the team in 2007. Since then, Evernham has dabbled in television work as a NASCAR analyst and host

of “AmeriCarna,” a program focusing on the car culture. He also serves as a consultant to Hendrick Motorsports. Evernham was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in January 2018. Johnson found tremendous success during the second chapter of his racing career. His powerhouse team, based in tiny Ronda, North Carolina, won 132 NASCAR premier series races and six series championships. Among those who visited Victory Lane in Johnson-prepared race cars were Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, LeeRoy Yarborough, Neil Bonnett, Terry Labonte and Bill Elliott. Johnson sold his race team and stepped away from the sport in 1995. He and his wife, Lisa, now live in Charlotte, North Carolina. he improvement Spencer Gallagher is seeing with GMS Racing this year is immense. Through a handful of races, his No. 23 team has a pair of top-10s, tying his total from his previous 40 XFINITY Series events. How would you evaluate the start to your second full XFINITY Series season? “We’ve been great. It seems like I’m getting to ride a brand-new rocket ship every weekend. These guys at GMS have been busting their butts since the start of

the season. I feel so much more confident unloading every weekend. Chad Norris, our crew chief, is doing a great job during practice and the race, getting us as close to the front as we can.” What is the biggest difference with this No. 23 team in 2018 compared to last year? “It’s definitely been a team effort. It’s a combination of things. It’s having the momentum and togetherness of having a group of guys that have been working together for over a year now. It lets you build a copasetic team environment. A Team Effort Eggleston Keeps Premium Motorsports In High Gear BY BEN WHITE

cott Eggleston, team manager for Premium Motorsports, took it upon himself to check out NASCAR on his own just after reaching what some feel is the greatest teenage milestone. “That was back in the late 1970s at Richmond,” Eggleston said. “I was 16 years old and had just gotten my driver’s license. I had been following NASCAR since I was 8 or 9 by listening to races on the radio through Motor Racing Network.” Eggleston didn’t set out to work in NASCAR but, rather, turned his attention to motocross

competition and was exposed to Late Model racing at various short tracks around Virginia. From there, he met noted chassis builder Jay Hedgecock, then with Petty Enterprises. Eggleston joined the Pettys for several seasons before moving to SABCO Racing, Dale Earnhardt Inc., BAM Racing, MB2 Racing and Front Row Racing and, most recently Premium Motorsports in 2012. “In the old days, you pretty much did a little bit of everything,” Eggleston said. “Then I became a crew for the first time in 1998. Daniel Suarez Is Cleared to Race at Bristol NASCAR Staff Report

aniel Suarez took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to provide fans with an update on his injured thumb. Suarez revealed that he has an avulsion fracture in his left thumb, but has been cleared by a doctor to race in Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Food City 500 at Bristol. “I won’t need surgery and it’s not broke,” Suarez said in a video posted to his Twitter account. “But the tendons and ligaments are pretty bad.”

The driver of the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota also modeled the brace he will wear on his left hand for the foreseeable future. Suarez, caught up in Lap 2 wreck at Texas Motor Speedway last Sunday that also involved Alex Bowman, Paul Menard, Austin Dillon and Ross Chastain, posted a video after the race that showed his left hand wrapped in a splint. On Tuesday, a doctor gave it a closer look now that the driver is back in North Carolina. Suarez was able to finish the race, logging 290 (of 334) laps to finish 29th at Texas. He has established relationships with multiple racing organizations, such as ARCA, NASCAR and Formula 1. His collaboration with other safety organizations like the International Council of Motorsports Sciences, Motorsports Safety Education Foundation, After the Impact Fund, Race Go Safer, and Think First has created an important platform for an ever-growing prosperity of safety informational exchange. “I still race professionally, so my goal is to provide safety tips to drivers, pit crew and loyal fans that come out every weekend,” Cormier said. “While the sport has dangers, we can take precautions to provide a measure of safety.” With his surgical background, Cormier has been able to engage companies to establish new technologies to diagnose and rehabilitate head injuries. He is now focusing his efforts on prevention. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven years,

and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount bristol preview: april 12, 2018

In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with racecar drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time,

ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the longterm effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.

By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in

Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

n August 18, 1991, fans attending the Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan International Speedway were treated to one of the best finishes in NASCAR history. The 200-lap Winston Cup event at the 2-mile track was settled between Dale Jarrett, driver of the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford, and Davey Allison, driver of the No. 28 Robert Yates Ford. The two NASCAR veterans battled closely during final eight laps with Jarret squeezing past Allison in the final 100 yards. Jarrett sealed the deal by pushing forward by a mere 10 inches as they reached the start-finish line.

A fourth and final caution waved with 12 laps remaining for debris on the backstretch. Lead-lap drivers pitted for tires and fuel with nine laps remaining but Jarrett took fuel only, putting himself in position to challenge for the win. Jarrett held the lead on the restart. Allison, the leader of 61 laps, moved through the pack and became Jarrett’s closest rival. With two laps remaining, Allison remained side by side with Jarrett for the final four miles. “I was just trying to hold my line,” Jarrett said in Greg Fielden’s “40 Years of Stock Car Racing.” “I stayed down low because we were good down there.
