RECORD BOOK
▶▶ NASCAR’s Memorial Day weekend event is a patriotic celebration and the Coca-Cola 600, the sport’s longest race at 600 miles, is a true test of endurance that challenges both man and machine. Hendrick Motorsports should be strong and Jimmie Johnson has four 600 victories. StewartHaas Racing’s Kevin Harvick is certainly expected to be in the mix after posting 600 wins in 2011 and 2013.
▶▶ Jimmie Johnson has the top entry in the Charlotte Motor Speedway record book with eight Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victories. Kasey Kahne is next among active drivers with four wins.
RACE REWIND ▶▶ Armed with a new crew chief and a gas tank that held just enough fuel to get him to the end of 600 miles, Austin Dillon scored the first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory of his career. He put the vaunted No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet back in Victory Lane for the first time since the 2000 season.

LONGEVITY IS KING AT CHARLOTTE THE 600-MILE RACE OFFERS DRIVERS NEW CHALLENGES BY JARED TURNER
A
t 600 miles, Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 is the longest race on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule. For some drivers, the means four-and-a-half or five hours of misery. For others, it means four-and-a-half or five hours of fun. Like with most anything in life, one’s perspective is largely shaped by his progress.
Drivers who start and finish the 600 with a lot of speed tend not to feel like the race is atypically long. However, those who struggle are more likely to liken the 400-lap event at 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway to an eternity. “It depends on what kind of car you have,” 2015 Monster Energy Series champion Kyle Busch said. “I’ve been in races in the 600mile race where it’s felt really easy and short, and I’ve been in races where it’s been a long, drawn-out, knock ’em, sock ’em kind of day. Hopefully, (crew chief) Adam Stevens and the guys can bring a really good car for me CHARLOTTE PREVIEW: MAY 28, 2018

this weekend and it will be a smooth race for us. I like running the 600 miles. I think it brings a new aspect to our sport — it’s longevity.” Longevity for both the driver and his car. With this race being 100 miles longer than any other race on the schedule, it’s the ultimate test of endurance, stamina, focus and equipment. “People will say, ‘It’s too long. It’s boring.’ Whatever,”
Busch said. “Well, you know, it’s a part of the product and the history that we’ve had on Memorial Day weekend for a long time that you run that extra hundred miles. And car preparation goes into that. Will your car make it? Will your engine last? Are the drivers able to be competitive throughout the whole race? You’ll have fatigue, sometimes, even at a 500-mile race. So, if you don’t
show signs of weakness, you should be pretty good.” Another consideration is fuel mileage. Last year’s Coke 600 was won by a driver, Austin Dillon, who didn’t have the fastest car, but whose team executed the best strategy when it came to saving and stretching fuel. Instead of pitting for tires and fuel along with frontrunners Busch and Martin Truex Jr. on lap 368 of 400, Dillon remained

on the track. Saving fuel for the entire final run, Dillon trailed Jimmie Johnson, who had also stayed out, until the seventime Monster Energy Series champion ran out of gas with less than three laps to go. With Busch and Truex closing in a hurry, Dillon had just enough fuel to get his No. 3 car across the finish line ahead of his pursuers who were on fresher tires and didn’t have to worry about fuel. “I was pretty confident we
were going to make it on fuel,” said Dillon’s crew chief, Justin Alexander. “I wasn’t 100 percent, obviously, but I felt good about our numbers and everything we were calculating, and I knew the 48 (Johnson) had not been saving most of that run. I had been listening to the radio and knew they didn’t start saving fuel until about 10 or 15 to go. We had started saving with maybe around 30 to go, so I knew they were going to be super close on
fuel, and I knew it was going to be us and him. Or, us or him, I guess, at the end. “We were trying to push the 48 because we knew we had to beat him, and we had the 78 (Truex) and the 18 (Busch) behind us, chasing us down, so it kind of got really nervewracking there at the end.” A similar scenario could certainly play out again on Sunday night. Of course, in NASCAR’s longest and arguably most grueling race, anything is possible.

FIVE TO WATCH AT CHARLOTTE BY JARED TURNER
▶▶ With five wins in 12 races this season, how could Kevin Harvick not be considered the favorite to go to Victory Lane at the Coca-Cola 600 — a race he’s already won twice in his career? ▶▶ Kyle Busch has never won a points-paying race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but he did win last year’s All-Star Race. If there’s one driver who has proven capable of hanging with Harvick this year, he’s the one. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. captured the 2016 Coke 600 in history-making fashion by leading 392 of 400 laps. Last year, he finished third in the 600 and won the fall Charlotte race. He’ll be a major threat this weekend. ▶▶ No driver has been more dominant at Charlotte over the past decadeand-a-half than Jimmie Johnson. The only problem? Johnson has struggled mightily in 2018, and all signs suggest there’s no end in sight. ▶▶ The Coke 600 has been known to produce the occasional surprise winner, as happened last year with Austin Dillon. There’s no driver more capable of being this year’s surprise than Chase Elliott, who finished second at Charlotte last fall.

or NASCAR fans, it’s a lot like Christmas. The only differences? The gifts come 10 months out of the year instead of just one, and they’re wrapped in a Speed Crate instead of a box. By signing up and picking a driver at the Speed Crate website, https://speedcrate. co/, fans receive a monthly shipment of 4-5 - (3-5) items related to their driver of choice.
Speed Crate delivers right to your front door via the United States postal service. Monthly subscriptions are priced at just $29.99, and the items in each monthly shipment amount to more than $50 in retail value. Items include apparel (shirts, hats, socks, etc.), accessories (credential holders, car decals, travel coffee mugs, lanyards, koozies, pens, flags, etc.) and much more. subscribers. That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being
introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. Our big thing is we’re not going to send you the same item twice.” While Speed Crate’s inventory of NASCAR collectibles and paraphernalia is made up mostly of items you might find in souvenir trailers at the track, Speed Crate has expanded this season to include more custom-style merchandise. – a large portion of the items are actually not available at the track and many are custom so they cannot be found any where besides Speed Crate, not online or at the track For example, Alex Bowman — the new driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet — recently donated some autographed Hero Cards that 10 lucky fans would receive in a future Speed Crate. SPOTLIGHT “We think that the more we can just provide really cool products that fans want, the more Speed Crate will grow,” Cox said. “That’s kind of what we’re doing.” Speed Crate originally featured just 12 drivers from whom subscribers could choose. Now there are 20 active drivers and one retired driver — NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Subscriptions are on a month-to-month basis, and subscribers are free to change drivers at any time. Tired of getting Chase Elliott gear, for example? You can switch to Brad Keselowski or someone else with a simple click — and not be charged extra. Speed Crate ships items FebruaryNovember and takes a break in December and January to beef up its inventory for the upcoming NASCAR season. Perhaps the best news of all? Speed Crate is looking to broaden its inventory even more in the months and years to come. “People want die-casts and some other items that aren’t the easiest to get, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” Cox said. “We’re listening to the feedback and making sure we’re kind of adjusting with what people want to see.”

A TASTE OF THE ACTION HARRISON BURTON IS GROWING WITH KBM BY JOSEPH WOLKIN
A
ll it took was six races for Harrison Burton to get his feet wet in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Now, the Kyle Busch Motorsports driver is looking to secure his first win, coming off two stellar runs to start his part-time schedule. What did you learn in your first few races last year that have helped you this year? “The biggest thing is how the races are run are different with your strategy. How you approach Truck Series races is
different than how you approach K&N races or Late Model races. It took me a little while to catch up to that, but I think I’m slowly building on that. I feel like I did better at Dover [fifth last weekend] than at Martinsville [fourth in October].” Do you feel you have an advantage by having the ability to pick at your dad’s brain? “Not only does he tell me things, but he shows me things that I can do right. Growing up at the racetrack, I watched how much work he put into it, how much he did every day and what it takes. That’s something a lot of drivers don’t understand. It takes a level of dedication, and that’s something I got a grasp of. Even now, I see my dad’s schedule with NBC and he’s just a busy guy who works his butt off, and that’s what you have to do if you want to be a racecar driver.” CHARLOTTE PREVIEW: MAY 28, 2018

eff Melanson, engine tuner for Gaunt Brothers Racing and driver D.J. Kennington, saw his first NASCAR race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 1999. He was there to show a Pro Truck Series truck spotlighting a division of racing in the northern states. His racing efforts began in Late Models at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, New Hampshire where he sponsored cars and personally worked on them. Eventually, a venture in a higher division of racing opened the door to set his career in motion. “The driver and owner I was working for got a Busch North car together,” Melanson said. “A
good friend of mine was on Martin Truex’s team in that series and they called me up needing some help. Everything was fine up there since I had my own business. Still, I decided in 2004 to move to North Carolina to get into (NASCAR). I had friends down here already and they helped me get a job at Fitz Bradshaw Racing.” He returned home for a time and worked in the automotive field, learning about fuel injected engines in Mercedes, Fords and Jaguars. That opened the door to join NASCAR again when fuel injection came to the sport in 2012. He has also worked with Wood BrothersJTG Racing, FAS Lane Racing, BK Racing, as well as stints with Triad Engines and Joe Hamilton Engines. His job at the track can become rather technical. “After final practice, I check the valve lash (clearance) and make sure all the springs are good,” Melanson said. “I also check the filters to make sure we don’t have any failures coming up. I download the laptop and read the information such as oil pressure, water pressure, RPMs (rounds per minute) and maintain the parameters that we want to maintain. Then look at the fueling to make sure it isn’t running too rich or too lean. You maintain all of that to get through the weekend.” CHARLOTTE PREVIEW: MAY 28, 2018

Davey Allison, winner of 19 Cup races and one of the brightest stars in the sport before he succumbed to injuries suffered in a helicopter crash at Talladega in 1993, joined his father, Bobby Allison, as a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Alan Kulwicki, whose life was cut short by a plane crash in 1993 less than five months after he became the last driver to win the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship as a “privateer,” was the fifth member of the Class of 2019 introduced by NASCAR Chairman and
CEO Brian France. If ever there was a “lock” for the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Gordon fills that role. Winner of 93 Cup points races—third all-time behind Richard Petty (200) and David Pearson (105) and ahead of Darrell Waltrip (84), Bobby Allison (84), Cale Yarborough (83) and Jimmie Johnson (83)—Gordon drove the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for 797 consecutive races from his debut in 1992 until he bowed out of the ride at the end of the 2015 season. Now an analyst for FOX Sports, Gordon won four Cup championships, behind only Petty, Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Sr., who share the series record with seven each. Gordon won three Daytona 500s, four straight Southern 500s and a record five Brickyard 400s in his remarkable career. “Man, I’m on cloud nine,” Gordon said during a televised interview after the announcement. In addition to his NASCAR accomplishments, Penske has won the Indianapolis 500 16 times as an owner. “There were many great candidates,” Penske said in a SiriusXM NASCAR Radio interview after the announcement. “This is my day, and I’ll never forget it.” Wallace was delighted for his former boss. “I don’t know of anyone that has accomplished as much across all levels of motorsports as Roger Penske,” Wallace said. “I don’t know of anyone in motorsports that is as respected among all levels of racing and business as Roger. “He’s my personal mentor and my personal hero. He has helped me immeasurably, both in racing and in business. I can’t say enough about Roger—he’s just an all-around fantastic person.” Penske was named on 68 percent of the ballots submitted by Voting Panel members. Davey and Bobby Allison, the only father/son combination to finish 1-2 in the Daytona 500,
are the second father/son duo to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, joining Ned and Dale Jarrett. “It’s was a great feeling of happiness, of weakness and everything,” Bobby Allison said of the moment when France announced his son’s name. “I just had to bend over and get a hold of myself. It was really good news.” Davey Allison received 63 percent of the vote from panel members. Kulwicki, who was named on 46 percent of ballots, rallied from a 278-point deficit to win the 1992 series title, edging Bill Elliott by 10 points—then the closest margin in Cup history—after a thrilling season finale at Atlanta in which Davey Allison also had a shot at the championship. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. SPOTLIGHT brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under
the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.
who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,
Oliva released its Serie V to great acclaim and in 2007 it was rated 4th best cigar with a 93 rating. Oliva cigars continually ranks as one of the best cigars of the year. In 2012, the family released a new Serie V the Melanio edition to honor the man who started it all. Two years later in 2014, the Serie V Melanio would be named the Cigar of the Year with a 96 rating! Near perfection. Just this year, the Serie V rated a 95 and
was the number 3 cigar of the year for 2017. In addition, to the highly rated Serie cigars, Oliva also makes the Nub, which also makes the year’s best cigar list. In fact, Oliva cigars have remained on Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 cigars of the year for 12 years straight. On top of that, Oliva believes in keeping prices in check. The company’s cigars start at under $4 and go up to about $15. The highly rated Serie V belicoso is just over $8.00 depending on local taxes.

O
n May 16, 1992, “The Winston” All-Star race featured two drivers crashing hard under the checkered flag with the winner going to the hospital instead of Victory Lane. Davey Allison, driver of the Robert Yates Racing Ford, and Kyle Petty, driver of the SABCO Racing Pontiac, endured an intense 70 laps around Charlotte Motor Speedway. Twenty aggressive drivers battled for a thenrecord $300,000 winner’s purse under the lights for the first time at the 1.5-mile track. Third-place finisher Dale Earnhardt, driver of the RCR Enterprises Chevrolet, led six of the
last seven laps including the white flag lap. He lost control and slid through turns three and four, leaving the door open for Allison and Petty to battle side by side for the win. Just before crossing the line, the two cars touched, sending Allison driver-side first into the front stretch wall. He sealed the deal by a bumper’s width but suffered a concussion and bruised lung in the crash and did not go to Victory Lane. “That year we were winning one week and wrecking the next,” said Larry McReynolds, then crew chief for RYR. “Davey gave it all he had that night. I remember Robert Yates standing there accepting the trophy. We dubbed that car 007 because it was tough. He hung that damaged side in our shop after that.” CHARLOTTE PREVIEW: MAY 28, 2018

oolant leak failures are one of the most common reasons for roadside breakdowns. It’s that dreaded feeling when you realize that you’ve got a coolant leak. Maybe it’s the radiator, or the water pump, or worse – the head or the block. You’re likely looking at a bill of hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars to get your vehicle
back on the road. In the past, the early days, you may have been told to try adding pepper, egg, coffee grounds, or even mustard powder in the cooling system to get that leak stopped. More recently someone may have told you to try a stop leak common on the shelves of most auto parts stores. But a lot of those products
contain sodium silicate or liquid glass, the same ingredient they used to seize the engines during “Cash for Clunkers.” Sure the radiator might have been plugged but often other parts of the cooling system were too! But hold on. What if there was a safe way for you to get your trusty friend back on the road for less than

Made in the USA, K-Seal is a global bestselling cooling system leak sealer with over 6 million bottles sold. If it was the 17th century those who make it would be burned at the stake.” “It’s about the only thing I’ve heard that works. We sell it by the caseload.” “I’ve repaired many a car with K-Seal and I know it works.” (Actual testimonial from independent market survey
Dec 2017) We asked Patrick O’Brien, CEO of K-Seal, what makes K-Seal different from all the other stop leaks on the shelf? “K-Seal is the next generation stop leak technology,” O’Brien said. “We’ve developed a ceramic microfiber formula that is safe to use with all types of coolant / antifreeze. Plus, K-Seal was the first multi-purpose formula designed to fix leaks in all hard parts of the cooling system, including the head, head gasket, block, radiator, heater core, water pump casing and freeze plug. It’s safe to use in all water cooled engines from motor cycles right up to heavy duty trucks, and
everything in between. It even fixed a leak on a Top Fuel dragster, and when K-Seal makes a repair it is permanent. It’s way beyond your Grandfather’s old stop leak.” “K-Seal is the only product to have been independently university tested to the ASTM standard for coolant leak repair products. This means it will seal a leak when it’s meant to but it positively will not block even the narrowest waterways in the cooling system. Jalapa Ligero, plus Cain’s triple fermentation, makes Cain Daytona a medium to full-bodied, smooth, rich and flavorful smoke. Making a Straight Ligero cigar requires a unique understanding of the leaf. Ligero comes from the top of the tobacco plant. Its direct exposure to the sun darkens and thickens the leaf. Smaller than leaves lower on the plant, it also enjoys a concentration of nutrients. Habano Seed Ligero is recognized as the most full flavored leaf. Additionally, the region in which this Habano Seed is grown plays a significant role in its flavor and strength. Jalape Ligero is the smoothest of these powerhouses. Jalapa is the northern most tobacco region of Nicaragua. Jalapa Ligero is grown in a valley and enjoys less direct sun, the result is a full body leaf with a more noticeable range of flavor.
