▶▶ The Chicagoland 400 was the first of 10 races in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, but moved to an early-summer date this year. As a result, there will be lower stakes, but still an opportunity for a winless driver to punch his playoff ticket. Tony Stewart started his drive to the 2011 title by winning this race and Brad Keselowski did the same in 2012. Matt Kenseth won here in 2013 but had to settle for second in the title fight. Martin Truex Jr. started his championship run here last year.

A CLEAR-CUT FAVORITE RED-HOT MARTIN TRUEX JR. HAS A GREAT HISTORY AT CHICAGOLAND BY JARED TURNER

artin Truex Jr. has won two of the past three Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races. The Furniture Row Racing driver has also won each the last two races held at Chicagoland Speedway. So how could anyone rightfully bet against Truex — the reigning Monster Energy Series champion — on Sunday at Chicagoland? While Truex is certainly far from being guaranteed a victory in the Overton’s 400, it
would be simply short-sighted for anyone to suggest he enters the weekend as anything but a heavy favorite. Having earned his third victory of 2018 this past Sunday on the Sonoma Raceway road course, Truex seems to be hitting his stride after being outperformed over the season’s first three months by Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, who’ve combined for a series-high nine wins this year. If anyone is poised to challenge Truex this weekend, Harvick and Busch are undoubtedly the ones, but momentum is certainly on Truex’s side heading to the 1.5-mile suburban Chicago track where he’s led a combined 148 laps in his last three visits. In fact, Truex admittedly is gaining more confidence by the week when it comes to his chances of repeating as Monster Energy Series champion. “I feel pretty good about it,” Truex said after leading a race-high 62 laps on the way to winning at Sonoma last weekend. “I feel like we’re in a good position. I feel great about where we’re at. We’re doing the right things. Hard to say right now, honestly. We’ve got a great team.
Obviously we did it last year. But that’s no guarantee. There’s other teams that have stepped up, and there’s a lot of fast guys out there. Takes a lot to go through the playoffs, and the elimination format is really just tough. One bad race and you can find yourself on the outside looking in.” While Truex is unequivocally the favorite at Chicagoland, he doesn’t necessarily consider himself the championship favorite —
at least not yet. After all, Harvick and Busch both have more wins this season, and Harvick, in particular, has made winning look almost easy at times. “I think we feel great when we beat him, not only him but his whole team,” Truex said of Harvick and his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing bunch. “They do an amazing job, and they’re great competitors. They’ve got a really good group of guys that are going to be tough to beat all season

long.” But that’s also likely the case for Truex and his No. 78 team led by 2017 championship-winning crew chief Cole Pearn, who executed a winning strategy for Truex at Sonoma that caught many of their competitors — the No. 4 team included — by surprise. Pearn credits the No. 78 team’s recent string of strong performances to team owner Barney Visser and the tremendous resources
that the Denver, Coloradobased organization continues to receive from Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing, a Toyota organization that fields four teams compared with Furniture Row’s one. “We’ve got a lot of great people, and obviously Barney’s commitment to our team,” Pearn said. “He enables us to kind of do it at a high level for a singlecar team, and on top of that we’ve got great partners in Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing
that we couldn’t do without, period. They’re awesome to work with, and we have a great relationship with them, so it’s kind of a unique situation where we’ve got a lot of good people. Being out in Colorado is definitely a challenge at times, but we look to the opportunities that we can embrace it. “It really just comes down to people. We’ve got a great team of people, even though it is a one-car team, and we rely on them heavily.”

FIVE TO WATCH AT CHICAGOLAND BY JARED TURNER
▶▶ It’s been a decade since Kyle Busch made what has been his lone trip to Victory Lane at Chicagoland, but, based on the Joe Gibbs Racing driver’s record in 2018, it might be time for him to get back there. ▶▶ A two-time Chicagoland winner (2012 and 2014), Brad Keselowski certainly knows how to get around the 1.5-mile track. The only thing that might be working against him this time is the simple fact that he hasn’t been all that fast in 2018. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. has won the last two races at Chicagoland and has won two of the last three races overall. Truex is red hot and raring to go at a track where he knows the way to Victory Lane better than almost anyone. ▶▶ A winner of the first two races ever held at Chicagoland back in 2001 and 2002, respectively, Kevin Harvick hasn’t been to Victory Lane at the Joliet, Illinois track since. But if there was ever a season for him to make it back, it’s this year. ▶▶ Arguably the most feel-good story of 2018 has been that of Clint Bowyer, who has two wins this season after having been shut out of Victory Lane from 2013-2017. Don’t be surprised if Bowyer makes some noise in the Windy City.

That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being
introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. Our big thing is we’re not going to send you the same item twice.” While Speed Crate’s inventory of NASCAR collectibles and paraphernalia is made up mostly of items you might find in souvenir trailers at the track, Speed Crate has expanded this season to include more custom-style merchandise. – a large portion of the items are actually not available at the track and many are custom so they cannot be found any where besides Speed Crate, not online or at the track For example, Alex Bowman — the new driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet — recently donated some autographed Hero Cards that 10 lucky fans would receive in a future Speed Crate. Now there are 20 active drivers and one retired driver — NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Subscriptions are on a month-to-month basis, and subscribers are free to change drivers at any time. Tired of getting Chase Elliott gear, for example? You can switch to Brad Keselowski or someone else with a simple click — and not be charged extra. Speed Crate ships items FebruaryNovember and takes a break in December and January to beef up its inventory for the upcoming NASCAR season. Perhaps the best news of all? Speed Crate is looking to broaden its inventory even more in the months and years to come. “People want die-casts and some other items that aren’t the easiest to get, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” Cox said. “We’re listening to the feedback and making sure we’re kind of adjusting with what people want to see.”

fledgling NASCAR circuit. Over 15 seasons at NASCAR’s highest level, Roberts won 33 times in 207 starts and claimed 32 poles. He was among the top-10 finishers in an amazing 59 percent of the races he entered. His résumé includes victories in the 1962 Daytona 500 and the Southern 500 in 1958 and 1963. Reports indicated Roberts planned to retire from driving during the 1964 NASCAR

ithin just a year and a half of competing in the ARCA Racing Series, MDM Motorsports’ Zane Smith has emerged as a title favorite. The driver of the No. 41 machine already have three wins to start the year, and more might be coming. How comfortable do you feel with MDM Motorsports? “Very comfortable. It’s really cool to work with a team like MDM Motorsports, especially my [No.] 41 team. Week-in and week-out, it’s a ton of fun to go to the racetrack.”
Did you expect to win so often early on into the ARCA Series season? “To be completely honest I don’t know about three wins already, but we’ve just been able to collect those from executing every weekend and getting our car really good on race trim, so we just need to keep our momentum rolling and keep collecting those wins and hopefully the big trophy at the end of the year.” What do you feel like you need to improve on? “I think I need to improve myself on doing a little more homework than I am doing because there’s always room for improvement, such as learning the car more, getting to know my guys even better, and hopefully start to get some poles so I can collect those extra five points.” CHICAGOLAND PREVIEW: JUNE 28, 2018

W
illiam Evernham, transporter driver for Premium Motorsports and driver Reed Sorenson, has spent the past three decades working on race cars. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because he is the brother of NASCAR Hall of Famer inductee and former Cup series crew chief and team owner Ray Evernham. William remembers his first NASCAR race at a well-known track not too far from his family’s home. After all, auto racing has always been big in that part of the northeast. “We are originally from Hazlet, New Jersey so it had to be Trenton (Speedway),” William said. “They used to run a USAC race and what they called the Grand National cars back then. The drivers would go back and forth so that
was my first time at the track. That was back in 1974 or 1975. “We would do the local stuff and on Saturday it was ABC’s Wide World of Sports. So it was always about watching portions of NASCAR races or maybe a Joie Chitwood show or something like that.” William and his brother joined IROC (International Race of Champions) as team mechanics in 1984 under the leadership of Jay Signore and Roger Penske. He spent a great deal of time traveling from their New Jersey base to North Carolina and eventually made the decision to relocate. Over the past 32 years, William has worked in a variety of roles with such teams as MB2 Motorsports, Bill Amick Motorsports, Ganassi Racing, Evernham Motorsports and Premium Motorsports beginning in 2018, where he drives the team’s transporter to the majority of Cup events on the schedule. “I get to help the guys and see them and get them stuff they need,” William said. “The part that means the most to me is spending time with the man upstairs. This transporter is the best chapel on earth. I’ve learned what to appreciate and I enjoy it. I like stopping and getting a kind word or maybe get to help someone. wning a business that repairs hoses doesn’t mean you need an industrial trade background. A number of highly successful PIRTEK owners come from a
variety of career backgrounds, including sales, marketing, finance and business development. Jim Hart was strictly white collar during the 35 years he called on big-business clients to buy his electronics and computer accessories. In that career world, most of his associates sported crisp office attire and clean fingernails. That all changed for Hart when he became a PIRTEK franchise owner. A PIRTEK Mobile Service Vehicle arrives onsite where a technician performs the repair, minimizing equipment downtime. “The PIRTEK sales call is a blue-collar call,” said Hart, who acquired a South San Francisco PIRTEK. “You are going into a service garage with no appointment, looking for the guy with the dirtiest hands to start the questioning process to eventually get you to the decision maker.” Hart said it took him a while to acclimate to his new role, which takes him deep into the hands-on industrial world. But he’s happy he made the switch. “There was definitely an adjustment period from my sales and marketing background where you make appointments in advance to make a formal sales presentation,” he said. “Now every day is different. Even though the process and products are consistent, you never know what opportunities are ahead.” Dan Currid’s career experience was different than Hart’s. The owner of PIRTEK San Leandro in San Leandro, CA, Currid did have a background in heavy equipment. Over an 18-year career with a tractor company, his roles included warehouse supervisor, parts manager, sales manager and field service supervisor. “If you want to own a PIRTEK franchise, it’s not necessary to have that kind of
background,” Currid said. “But mine did make the transition smooth for me. I also have a lot of industry contacts and relationships from my previous work, which provided me with an edge.” Doug Mack, owner of PIRTEK Power Inn in Sacramento, CA, had a more technical background before acquiring his franchise. Mack worked in cable TV and high-speed internet for a private community in Sacramento County. “I wore every hat that you could possibly imagine,” he said. Mack added that while he was always mechanically inclined, working a great deal with cable and fittings, he still needed some assistance on the business side of PIRTEK ownership. “I did get a lot of help from corporate and from the other owners, too,” he said. “They were very helpful and supportive when I was getting started.” According to Glenn Duncan, CEO of PIRTEK, that diversity of backgrounds is a characteristic of PIRTEK franchise ownership. “We provide in-depth training for all our franchise owners, so they grasp every facet of the business,” Duncan said. “A person can succeed with PIRTEK, regardless of background. In the end, it doesn’t really depend on whether someone comes from a white-collar or blue-color background. One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under
the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.
who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,

rnie Irvan, driver of the No. 28 Robert Yates Racing Ford, dominated the Mello Yello 500 at the 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway on Oct. 10, 1993. The California native sealed the deal by leading an incredible 328 of 334 total laps to collect the ninth of 15-career victories. Collectively, Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon led the remaining six laps. Irvan started from the second position alongside pole sitter Gordon but managed to lead lap one to lap 64. From there, he held the point from laps 66 to 161, 165 to 210, 212 to
272 and 274 to 334. The only other time a car and driver were that dominant at CMS was 23 years later in 2016 when Martin Truex Jr. led 392 of 400 laps in the Coca-Cola 600. Irvan had been named the fulltime replacement for the late Davey Allison beginning with the September 5th Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. Allison passed away on July 13, 1993 as a result of a helicopter crash a day earlier. “The race may have been stinky for the fans, but it smelled pretty good to me,” Irvan said, referring to clicking off so many laps our front. Added Martin’s crew chief Steve Hmiel,”We brought a knife to a gun fight. The first 300 laps were so boring I almost went to sleep.” CHICAGOLAND PREVIEW: JUNE 28, 2018
