Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won here last July, and Brad Keselowski pushed his Team Penske Ford to victory here in July of 2016. Austin Dillon won the Daytona 500 in February, so he could be a factor late. Keep an eye on Jimmie Johnson, who leads all active drivers with three wins here.

n the heels of easily the season’s craziest finish aside from the Daytona 500, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series returns to Daytona International Speedway this weekend for the annual mid-summer Saturday night shootout under the lights. Rest assured that no driver will be more motivated than Aric Almirola. Leading with less than half a lap to go in the
2018 Daytona 500, Almirola had his dreams of winning The Great American Race snatched right out from under him in a split second when a bump from Austin Dillon sent his No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford out of control and into the Turn 3 wall. Instead of leaving the World Center of Racing with a prized Harley J. Earl Trophy in hand, Almirola walked away with a torn-up race car and a broken heart. what,” Almirola said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to win a NASCAR Xfinity Series race there and got my first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory there back in July of 2014. So, I’d love to win another race in July. I don’t think anything will replace winning at Daytona in February, though. The Daytona 500 is our biggest race of the year, and that would’ve been really special,
but a win is a win.” As Almirola reflects on February’s last-lap incident, the 34-year-old driver admits that it was hard to swallow at first. But, like with many hardships that people face in life, time has eased the pain even if completely erasing it is impossible. Still, Almirola can’t help but occasionally replay that final lap in his mind. “I thought, ‘I’m going to win
this race,’” Almirola said. “I had every bit of confidence when I took the white flag as the leader. I was willing to do whatever it was going to take to win. I was going to block and be aggressive, and I was going to put myself in position to do everything I could to win that race, and that was honestly my mindset. “So, it was disappointing. I was pretty hot when it didn’t

work out, and that lasted maybe three or four days, and I got over it. … I’m not one to dwell on the past. I move on from things pretty easily.” One day that Almirola hopes to hold onto forever is the day at Daytona in July 2014 when he captured his first and only Monster Energy Series victory to date — albeit in a rain-shortened event. Regardless of anything that has happened before or since
at Daytona, Almirola always arrives at Daytona with an extra bounce in his step from knowing he knows the way to Victory Lane. “That victory does give me a little extra confidence,” said Almirola, who later picked up a Xfinity Series victory at Daytona in July 2016. “The amount of success I’ve had at Daytona time and time again, it seems like every time I go back there, I find myself when it comes down to the end of
the race with a chance to win — whether it’s in the Xfinity Series or the Monster Energy Series. It’s been a great place for me. It’s a special place for me not only because it’s Daytona, but for me, I grew up in Tampa, Florida, which is just two hours away, and I grew up going to Daytona to watch races. There’s a special place in my heart for Daytona. When I drive through that tunnel, I feel like I’m at home.”

FIVE TO WATCH AT DAYTONA BY JARED TURNER
▶▶ Ryan Blaney led 118 of 207 laps in this year’s Daytona 500, ultimately finishing seventh in what looked to be the race’s best car. Blaney hasn’t been as strong in any race since, so you can bet he’s eager to return to Daytona. ▶▶ NASCAR’s most dominant driver at the restrictor plate tracks in recent years, Brad Keselowski has enjoyed the brunt of his plate success at Talladega, but the Team Penske driver hasn’t been half bad at Daytona, either. ▶▶ A winner earlier this season at Talladega, Joey Logano has become one of the sport’s best and most consistent plate racers over the past few years. He’ll be looking to add a second Daytona win to go along with his victory in the 2015 Daytona 500. ▶▶ Austin Dillon won the 2018 Daytona 500 in dramatic fashion with a last-lap bump and run. This weekend, the driver of the iconic No. 3 car will try to pull off the rare season sweep at The World Center of Racing. ▶▶ Aric Almirola was less than half a lap from victory in this year’s Daytona 500 when a bump from Austin Dillon sent his No. 10 car hard into the wall. You can believe the Stewart-Haas Racing driver hasn’t forgotten.

That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being
introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. Now there are 20 active drivers and one retired driver — NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Subscriptions are on a month-to-month basis, and subscribers are free to change drivers at any time. Tired of getting Chase Elliott gear, for example? You can switch to Brad Keselowski or someone else with a simple click — and not be charged extra. Speed Crate ships items FebruaryNovember and takes a break in December and January to beef up its inventory for the upcoming NASCAR season. Perhaps the best news of all? Speed Crate is looking to broaden its inventory even more in the months and years to come. “People want die-casts and some other items that aren’t the easiest to get, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” Cox said. “We’re listening to the feedback and making sure we’re kind of adjusting with what people want to see.”

ustin Haley entered his sophomore NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season with high expectations. The driver of the No. 24 team wanted to win, and he did just that, capturing the victory at Gateway Motorsports Park. Now, it’s time to focus on the playoffs. What was it like to finally get that first win with GMS Racing? “It was definitely a surreal feeling. I always
dreamed of doing it, but I never thought it would be possible. At first, I thought it would come pretty quick when I started my Truck Series career. At the middle part of it, I was like wow I still haven’t won a race. The time was coming.” What did you need to do to win this title? “There are going to be some heavy hitters, but I’d put us right up there in the mix. If you look at the stats, we’ve been unbelievable compared to last year. I think we’re one of the best teams out there right now, and we have the confidence. ike Chance, car chief for BK Racing and driver Gray Gaulding, saw his first NASCAR race at North Carolina Motor Speedway at the age of 11 in 1972 while at the track with friends. He credits living in the heart of NASCAR as the reason he discovered the sport as a child. “I grew up in North Carolina and have been short track racing since I was 15,” Chance said. “I’m from Fayetteville, N.C., and there was a race track there. Friends were going racing there and asked me to come along. That’s how it all started for me.” An opportunity came his way as a teenager that set his career path into motion. Once
introduced to the mechanical side of the sport, he was hooked. “I did a little bit of everything,” Chance said. “When I was in high school, I worked for a local Pizza Hut and they owned a race team. We traveled all over the southeast racing. We were very successful. I was fortunate to start in the sport with good people that taught me a good work ethic and attention to detail. I learned the importance of that at a very early age.” Chance’s work with a friend’s short track team led to opportunities with the late Ricky Hendrick, Matt Kenseth and Coy Gibbs and their short track operations. That led to working in the Cup series for such teams as Roush Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing, Hillman Racing, RCR Enterprises, StarCom Racing and BK Racing beginning at Chicagoland Speedway. “I’m pretty much responsible for everything on the car,” Chance said. “You have to make sure everything is prepared and ready to go and ready to race. You supervise others that work on the car and work on the car also. What I like about what I do is there are only 39 other people in the world that have the same job as I do as car chief.” DAYTONA PREVIEW: JULY 5, 2018

t’s not often that a PIRTEK technician is summoned to a classroom to make hoses, but this is no ordinary school. PIRTEK Space Coast tech Bobby Kennedy fabricated hose assemblies for the Florida Institute of
Technology in Melbourne, FL, and one of its jet-powered dragsters. Through a partnership with nearby Larsen Motorsports, the school supports the drag-racing operation by offering hands-on internships and research opportunities for budding engineers and fabricators enrolled in the university. Students report to Larsen Motorsports’ high-tech workshop, which includes $8 million in inventory and equipment. DAYTONA PREVIEW: JULY 5, 2018

SPOTLIGHT Each jet engine needed for a dragster costs $250,000 – used. But it’s a $6,000 hose assemble that helps power these dragsters, which can reach speeds of 300 miles per hour in a quarter-mile. The 15- to 23-inch-long hoses connect to two tanks – one diesel and the other biofuel – to shutoff valves in the cockpit of these 1,500-pound vehicles. Kennedy says it’s not an overly complicated call, but one he enjoys nonetheless. “It’s remarkable what they are doing with these dragsters,” said Kennedy, who joined PIRTEK Space Coast a year ago. “I’ve never experienced any call like this before.” Incidentally, these jet dragsters are not just an expensive hobby. They race on a National Hot Rod Association circuit. Driver Elaine Larsen, co-owner of Larsen Motorsports, is a two-time International Hot Rod Association world champion while racing on the Florida Tech team. The team also has been featured on “Jay Leno’s Garage.” PIRTEK’s hose work on the dragster goes hand in hand with the company’s many motorsports sponsorships over the years. For example, PIRTEK is an associate partner of Team Penske in the NASCAR XFINITY Series season. The company serves as the primary sponsor for the
team’s No. 22 Ford Mustang in the NXS race at Daytona International Speedway on July 6. Speaking of Florida, PIRTEK has a network of 13 locations in the Sunshine State – more than in any other state. In addition, PIRTEK’s corporate headquarters are in Rockledge, FL. Several of the Florida PIRTEK owners have multiple franchises, including “mobile only” Tier 2 locations that allow owners to keep inventory in a small warehouse or storage facility. Some owners have both kinds of franchises: For example, Dan and Karen Ferretti own a full PIRTEK Service & Supply Center in Rockledge (PIRTEK Space Coast) and a “mobile only” location in Daytona (PIRTEK Daytona). “It makes franchise ownership more accessible to a larger group,” Dan Ferretti said of the Tier 2 “mobile only” option. “It also enables existing owners to own multiple franchises – we wanted to take advantage of that benefit.” PIRTEK is the only franchise of its kind in the United States, providing hydraulic and industrial hose replacement sales and services. There are 76 PIRTEK franchises and a fleet of Mobile Service Vehicles throughout the United States. Globally, PIRTEK has more than 400 locations and 2,000 Mobile Service Vehicles in 23 countries.

One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under
the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.
who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,

A WINDING ROAD STEWART GETS FIRST SONOMA WIN IN 2001 BY BEN WHITE
O
n Sunday June 24, 2001, Tony Stewart was in only his third season as a NASCAR Winston Cup driver when he won the Dodge/Savemart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. It was only his third start on the California road course while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing. Stewart started the 110-lap race from the third position and sealed the deal by taking the lead over road course ace Robby Gordon, in the Jim Smith-owned Ford, with only 11 laps remaining. He held off Gordon by 1.746 seconds at the finish to collect the 11th of 49
career Cup series victories. Stewart won three times at Sonoma, including the final victory of his career in 2016. Stewart has concentrated on open-wheel racing for much of his career, winning the Indy car championship in 1997. Having grown up in Indiana, he set his sights there before the opportunity to drive for team owner Joe Gibbs turned his attention to NASCAR in 1999. “I just like the road courses,” Stewart said in recent years. “I’ve always liked Sonoma. It’s really a driver’s track. It’s tough to make your car drive perfect all day. You can have a really good car, but it’s going to slide around and you’re going to struggle for grip, and that’s what makes it so fun.
