Short Track Strategy With the West Coast swing complete, drivers look to make moves in standings By Jared Turner
T
he West Coast Swing now in the proverbial rear-view mirror, it’s on to the first short-track race of 2018 as Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers prepare to compete in the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway. At .526 miles in length, Martinsville is the shortest track on the Monster Energy Series tour and provides a welcome respite from
the season’s first four races which were all held on tracks one mile or longer. “Yeah, Martinsville is great,” veteran driver Kasey Kahne said. “It was my toughest track for the first couple of years of my career. And then I started enjoying it and figuring it out a little bit. I really like that place because of the straight-line braking, the coasting, getting your car to turn off the throttle and in the throttle without wearing your rear tires off. It’s really a tricky and challenging place. There’s some really challenging areas to that track. It seems like when guys figure it out, they really can go on runs for a good period martinsville preview: march 22, 2018

of time.” Indeed. For as difficult as it might be for drivers to keep their cars in a straight line over 500 laps of close racing and hard braking, Martinsville is the kind of track that seems to favor former winners. It seems that once a driver and team get a true handle on the paperclip-shaped oval, that handle is not easily relinquished.
That’s why Jimmie Johnson, for example, has piled up an amazing nine victories at Martinsville over the years. It’s also why Kyle Busch has won two of the past four Martinsville races after years of frustration and failed attempts to conquer the Virginia short track. In fact, in his past five Martinsville outings, Busch has come home no worse than fifth. Not bad
for a guy who was wildly inconsistent over his first decade of racing at the venerable venue built by the late NASCAR pioneer H. Clay Earles in 1947. “It’s a tough racetrack, and any time you come in the pits and make an adjustment on your car, you certainly hope it goes the right way, or you make enough of it, or you don’t make too much of an

race preview adjustment,” Busch said. “The last run can be tricky, too, because you can be coming off a 50-lap run on right-side tires and take four and you’ve only got 30 (laps) to go, or you could have 80 to go and you know you have to manage that run all the way to the end.” One driver who is eager to score his maiden Martinsville victory is reigning Monster Energy Series champion Martin Truex Jr. Fresh off his first win of 2018 recorded last weekend at Auto Club Speedway, the Furniture Row Racing driver is looking forward to keeping the momentum going at Martinsville — where he finished second last fall. Truex is especially keen on trying to continue to blunt the early-season momentum gathered by Kevin Harvick, who prior to last weekend’s race at Fontana had notched three consecutive victories.
Jimmie Johnson has won nine times at Martinsville. GETTY IMAGES
Truex’s victory at ACS was not only his first triumph of the 2018 season; it was also the first of the year for Toyota. “Honestly, it just feels good to win,” Truex said. “I don’t really worry about who’s winning, who else is fast. Obviously the 4 (Harvick) has been quick. They’ve got a great team.
Kevin is an awesome driver. They had it going on the last couple weeks. “As we saw at Fontana, we can put together a run like that as well. I think most of all it feels good we’re able to find that speed we’ve been looking for the last couple weeks. It’s just kind of reassurance that what we’re doing is working.”

Five to Watch at martinsville by jared turner
▶▶ Kyle Busch has won two of the past four Martinsville races, including last October’s race in the playoffs. Still seeking his first win of 2018, Busch might be the hungriest driver on the grid right now. ▶▶ Once dubbed “Mr. Martinsville” for his mastery of the .526-mile oval, Jimmie Johnson leads all active drivers with nine victories at the Virginia short track. Johnson is still seeking his first top-five of 2018, however. ▶▶ Last year’s spring race winner at Martinsville, Brad Keselowski has seemingly grown more comfortable with each passing race at the paperclipshaped track. The Team Penske driver needs to make some noise after a fairly quiet start to 2018. ▶▶ A five-time Martinsville race winner, Denny Hamlin is always on the shortlist of favorites to prevail when NASCAR returns to this historic facility in his home state of Virginia. Hamlin hasn’t won at Martinsville since 2015, however. ▶▶ No driver will be more motivated this weekend than Chase Elliott, who looked to possibly be on his way to his first career win last fall at Martinsville before a late-race bump from Denny Hamlin ruined his day.

im Flock and his older brothers, Fonty and Bob, were among the 33 drivers who competed in NASCAR’s first Strictly Stock – now Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series – race on June 19, 1949. Tim Flock went on to win the premier series championship in 1952 and again in 1955. He competed in 187 races over 13 seasons, winning 39 times. Flock’s best year was 1955 when he won 18 races

In an era of roughand-tumble competition – mostly on dusty and often rutted dirt tracks – Flock was known for his precise driving skills. “To me, he was a cool customer,” said Richard Petty, who broke Flock’s season victory record in 1967. “You would see a martinsville preview: march 22, 2018

hange can be a good thing, and Paul Menard has learned that quickly. In the Wisconsin native’s first few Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series contests with Wood Brothers Racing, he’s bringing the No. 21 car to the front. With a quick pair of top 10s, he’s excited for the road ahead. What’s it been like to adjust to working with the No. 21 team?
“It’s been good. I spent the whole off-season fitting in the cars, trying to get to know everybody and it’s been pretty productive. We’ve had really fast Fords, and we’re looking forward to racing.” How difficult was it for you to make the swap? “It’s been pretty seamless. There’s some little details and things, like how they talk about the racecars. It’s still a race team with a lot of really talented people.” How do you feel like you’ve been fitting in with the team’s throwback feeling? “It’s a very historic team. I enjoy history. I’m a history buff. There’s things you can read about. Then, there’s the stories you hear from Eddie and Leonard can tell you first-hand. It’s been really cool.” martinsville preview: march 22, 2018

An Unexpected Twist Dolittle’s Life is All about Sports BY BEN WHITE
S
tan Dolittle, jack man for Stewart Haas Racing and driver Kevin Harvick, readily admits he didn’t grow up following stock car racing as many Southerners have. He did, however, know a lot about sports, having been a standout football player in high school and college. Dolittle loved being on the field so much that he decided to pursue a profession in sports, graduating from Garner Webb University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Wellness. Even though he was aware of NASCAR, his unexpected role came to him quite literally out of the blue.
“That was just a fortuitous turn of events,” Dolittle said. “Right out of college, I worked as a performance coach at a gym in Cornelius, N.C. I was over there for about two years when they hired a guy that had already been on pit crews. He came up to me said since I was athletic and asked if I had ever thought about being on a pit crew. I knew about NASCAR but never had. I was told I should check it out.” A month later, he was introduced to pit crew coach Trent Cherry at Team Penske and attended the 2012 Coca-Cola 600, eventually becoming a jack man with their organization before joining SHR in 2014. Like all crew members, he finds himself adjusting to new roles, such as carrying tires as part of NASCAR’s new five man rule. Dolittle and his fellow crew members played a vital part in three recent consecutive victories for the No. 4 SHR team at Atlanta, Las Vegas and Phoenix. “It’s an adrenaline rush for sure,” Dolittle said about pit stops. “It almost feels effortless when things go smoothly. There’s a sense of accomplishments each time but you also have to put it out of your head because you may or may not have another stop to do. It’s a great feeling when you can rattle one of smoothly like that.” martinsville preview: march 22, 2018

Daniel Hemric to bring back No. 8 in Monster Energy Series debut By Chase Wilhelm, NASCAR.com
A
fter a nine-year hiatus, the No. 8 will hit the track once again in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2018. The number, made famous by Dale Earnhardt Jr. during nine seasons competing for his late father at Dale Earnhardt, Inc., will be brought back by fellow Kannapolis, North Carolina, native and current NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Daniel Hemric. Hemric will make his Monster Energy Series debut in the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in two events this season, the first coming at Richmond
Raceway on April 21. The second on his schedule will occur at the new Charlotte Motor Speedway road course on Sept. 30, the first elimination race of the NASCAR Playoffs. “It’s an incredible opportunity with the 8 car coming back into the Cup Series,” Hemric told NASCAR.com. “Richard Childress told me at the beginning of 2017, he said listen, let’s try to build something here, let’s try to make sure we can get you to your goals and let’s try to figure out a way to get you to the top tier of this sport. He’s held true to his word and to everyone who’s backed me and supported me to this point. “It’s incredible to know not only do I get to do it once, but I get to do it again back in my hometown in Charlotte later in the fall. It’s unbelievable, a little overwhelming and something I’ve dreamed about my whole life. I’m trying to take it all in.” The golden opportunity is one that holds extra special value for Hemric, being able to follow in the footsteps of his hometown hero and the Earnhardt family, a group he has looked up to his entire life. Hemric’s dream of making it to NASCAR’s top level is one he was reminded of daily as a child riding past DEI’s headquarters. martinsville preview: march 22, 2018

Bubba Wallace Makes Impression on Local Students Ahead of STP 500 The Cup Series rookie spoke about getting ahead in life, his career path, and his year so far behind the wheel of the No. 43. by Press Release
M
ARTINSVILLE, Va. (March 20, 2018) – Magna Vista High School students had a special lecture from a visiting professor on Tuesday afternoon. Darrell ‘Bubba’ Wallace Jr. spoke in the auditorium just six miles from Martinsville Speedway, touching on topics from the Famous Martinsville Speedway Hot Dog to
how to approach life after graduation day to what he hopes to accomplish in the STP 500 on Sunday. He said afterwards his goal on Tuesday was to impart a little wisdom, while his goal on Sunday is simple – win. “It was a lot of fun,” Wallace said. “I can remember when I was in high school, it was just a handful of years ago. I know what they’re going through. It’s always a good time being able to share my passion and share what I do for a living with them. I think they were able to enjoy it and I was able to enjoy it for sure.” Wallace is no stranger to Martinsville Speedway, having claimed a pair of wins at the historic half-mile in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. He is also no stranger to some of the students on hand, some of whom he spoke to when they were students at Laurel Park Middle School. He emphasized a few life lessons for the youngsters again on Tuesday. “We were all in high school. The real world, it doesn’t wait up on you. It’s here as soon as you’re done with school. The biggest thing is you have to be prepped for that, you have to be ready for it,” Wallace said. “I wanted to focus on how to win at Martinsville but I also had to focus on passing my next math quiz too. The real world is a lot tougher than that. Kids need to realize that.” martinsville preview: march 22, 2018

Although being 24 and dealing with bills and taxes is “not fun” according to the driver of the No. 43 STP-sponsored Richard Petty Motorsports machine, he was happy with the inquisitive nature of the crowd on hand in Ridgeway. “They seemed like a lively bunch,” Wallace said. “Great audience the whole time, great questions, it was a great visit.” When asked about his success at Martinsville, especially in the Truck Series, he gave himself a quick pop quiz. A pop quiz that
he knows the answers to, inside and out. “I do the math every chance I get, second, first, first, fifth, I think that’s an average of 2.1 or maybe better. Not to toot my own horn but I love this place, obviously,” Wallace said. “It’s a place I fell in love with as soon as I got here…To be able to come back here three and a half years later in the Cup series is a homecoming for me. This is such a special weekend.” As for that goal of getting a grandfather clock in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday? Wallace knows the task ahead of him will be difficult, but he said he is ready to face it. “I know how tall that task is, but I really want to show why I love this race track,” Wallace said. “I think that is going to shine through and be like ‘he’s pretty good here’. That’s what we’re hoping for.” The current leader in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year points standings added that he isn’t afraid of a little physical racing. “We’ve got a bumper for a reason. MSG: Making Racing Safer By Dan Guttenplan
M
otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers and fans to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage
race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. “From the perspective of the fan, the first question to ask is whether you packed appropriately to prepare for the racetrack,” Cormier said. “Your health doesn’t start with us; it starts with you. Did you show up hydrated on a hot day? Did you consume anything that might be detrimental to your health like fried foods, processed foods or alcoholic beverages on an empty stomach. Have you had annual check-ups which include martinsville preview: march 22, 2018

spotlight your heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, electrolytes, etc.? Are you following the advice of your family doctor or internist?” In addition to being a racing fan, Cormier also races go-karts at top speeds of up to 130 mph. He has established relationships with multiple racing organizations, such as ARCA, NASCAR and Formula 1. His collaboration with other safety organizations like the International Council of Motorsports Sciences, Motorsports Safety Education Foundation, After the Impact Fund, Race Go Safer, and Think First has created an important platform for an ever-growing prosperity of safety informational exchange. “I still race professionally, so my goal is to provide safety tips to drivers, pit crew and loyal fans that come out every weekend,” Cormier said. “While the sport has dangers, we can take precautions to provide a measure of safety.” With his surgical background, Cormier has been able to engage companies to establish new technologies to diagnose and rehabilitate head injuries. He is now focusing his efforts on prevention. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven years,
and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount martinsville preview: march 22, 2018

of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with racecar drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time,
ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the longterm effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” martinsville preview: march 22, 2018

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.
who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,
Oliva released its Serie V to great acclaim and in 2007 it was rated 4th best cigar with a 93 rating. Oliva cigars continually ranks as one of the best cigars of the year. In 2012, the family released a new Serie V the Melanio edition to honor the man who started it all. Two years later in 2014, the Serie V Melanio would be named the Cigar of the Year with a 96 rating! Near perfection. Just this year, the Serie V rated a 95 and
was the number 3 cigar of the year for 2017. In addition, to the highly rated Serie cigars, Oliva also makes the Nub, which also makes the year’s best cigar list. In fact, Oliva cigars have remained on Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 cigars of the year for 12 years straight. On top of that, Oliva believes in keeping prices in check. The company’s cigars start at under $4 and go up to about $15. The highly rated Serie V belicoso is just over $8.00 depending on local taxes.

Being First Martin Captures Inaugural Las Vegas Win By Ben White
O
n March 1, 1998, Mark Martin, driver of the Roush Racing Ford, went to victory lane at the newly opened Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Batesville, Ark. native sealed the deal by leading 82 of 267 laps on the 1.5-mile oval. Martin held off teammate Jeff Burton for the win, beating him to the checkered flag by 1.605-seconds at the conclusion of a race that featured 24 lead changes. “It was no surprise that Jeff Burton ran really well there,” Martin said in a recent Ford press release. “Jeff was definitely on his game
at the time … (and) stepping up my game as well. The two of us racing out of the same shop was great for both of us.” Together, Martin and crew chief Jimmy Fennig logged 14 Cup series victories from 1997 to 2001 with 1998 being Martin’s careerbest season with seven victories. “Jimmy and I knew we were kind of on a hot streak,” Martin said. “We were really solid on the mile-and-a-half race tracks and it kind of being a jump ball with that being the first race, we were pretty quick to adapt and maybe got our cars tuned in a little bit quicker than the competition did ….” Martin collected 35 Cup series victories for Roush Racing and five more for Hendrick Motorsports during a 31-year career spanning from 1981 to 2013. martinsville preview: march 22, 2018

Coolant leak failures can be repaired with K-Seal.
Not Your Grandfather’s Stop Leak
C
oolant leak failures are one of the most common reasons for roadside breakdowns. It’s that dreaded feeling when you realize that you’ve got a coolant leak. Maybe it’s the radiator, or the water pump, or worse – the head or the block. You’re likely looking at a bill of hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars to get your vehicle
back on the road. In the past, the early days, you may have been told to try adding pepper, egg, coffee grounds, or even mustard powder in the cooling system to get that leak stopped. More recently someone may have told you to try a stop leak common on the shelves of most auto parts stores. But a lot of those products
contain sodium silicate or liquid glass, the same ingredient they used to seize the engines during “Cash for Clunkers.” Sure the radiator might have been plugged but often other parts of the cooling system were too! But hold on. What if there was a safe way for you to get your trusty friend back on the road for less than

spotlight the cost of a KFC family meal? Well there is, with K-Seal Multi-Purpose Permanent Coolant Leak Repair. Made in the USA, K-Seal is a global bestselling cooling system leak sealer with over 6 million bottles sold. It’s a favorite with professional technicians and here’s what a few of them had to say about it recently: “It’s like magic. If it was the 17th century those who make it would be burned at the stake.” “It’s about the only thing I’ve heard that works. We sell it by the caseload.” “I’ve repaired many a car with K-Seal and I know it works.” (Actual testimonial from independent market survey
Dec 2017) We asked Patrick O’Brien, CEO of K-Seal, what makes K-Seal different from all the other stop leaks on the shelf? “K-Seal is the next generation stop leak technology,” O’Brien said. “We’ve developed a ceramic microfiber formula that is safe to use with all types of coolant / antifreeze. Plus, K-Seal was the first multi-purpose formula designed to fix leaks in all hard parts of the cooling system, including the head, head gasket, block, radiator, heater core, water pump casing and freeze plug. It’s safe to use in all water cooled engines from motor cycles right up to heavy duty trucks, and
everything in between. It even fixed a leak on a Top Fuel dragster, and when K-Seal makes a repair it is permanent. It’s way beyond your Grandfather’s old stop leak.” “K-Seal is the only product to have been independently university tested to the ASTM standard for coolant leak repair products. This means it will seal a leak when it’s meant to but it positively will not block even the narrowest waterways in the cooling system. Plus K-Seal is safe for use with aluminium heads including the Northstar block.” www.kseal.com

Cain Daytona
C
ain Daytona is the latest release from Studio Tobac. The Jalapa Ligero is more refined than other Ligeros. Jalapa Ligero, plus Cain’s triple fermentation, makes Cain Daytona a medium to full-bodied, smooth, rich and flavorful smoke. Making a Straight Ligero cigar requires a unique understanding of the leaf. Ligero comes from the top of the tobacco plant. Its direct exposure to the sun darkens and thickens the leaf. Smaller than leaves lower on the plant, it also enjoys a concentration of nutrients. Habano Seed Ligero is recognized as the most full flavored leaf. Additionally, the region in which this Habano Seed is grown plays a significant role in its flavor and strength. Jalape Ligero is the smoothest of these powerhouses. Jalapa is the northern most tobacco region of Nicaragua. Jalapa Ligero is grown in a valley and enjoys less direct sun, the result is a full body leaf with a more noticeable range of flavor. Cain Daytona is exclusively manufactured and distributed by Tabacalcera Oliva Cigar Co. Learn more at CainCigars.com.
