▶ ▶ Expect the unique configuration of the 1-mile ISM Raceway track to once again produce some of NASCAR’s most intense racing. Kevin Harvick is the undisputed favorite after winning four of the last eight races here. If Harvick doesn’t find his way to Victory Lane in his Ford, expect a Chevrolet driver to score the win. The manufacturer has dominated in the spring race at Phoenix with eight wins in 13 years.
▶▶ Kevin Harvick sits atop the list of winners at ISM Raceway with eight. Seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson has four victories at the desert oval.

Will ‘Happy’ Season Continue? Kevin Harvick Will Look to Collect Another West Coast Win By Jared Turner
A
side from the Daytona 500, the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season has been the season of Kevin Harvick. But will Harvick, whose nickname is “Happy,” remain red-hot this weekend in the Valley of the Sun? First, the good news for Harvick fans: The
2014 series champion leads all drivers in wins at Phoenix, having gone to Victory Lane a record eight times at the 1-mile track. Now, the good news for everyone else: It has been four races since Harvick’s most recent win at Phoenix — which as of 2018 was officially renamed ISM Raceway. That means three drivers have won at the track since Harvick last did. Of course, others’ recent success in the desert does nothing to negate the fact that Harvick enters Sunday’s TicketGuardian 500 riding high on the heels of dominant, backto-back victories the past two weekends at phoenix preview: march 8, 2018

Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Atlanta Motor Speedway, respectively. So perhaps more worrisome for Harvick’s competition than his record at Phoenix is the fact that he’s been handsdown the top driver of 2018 and was far ahead of the competition last Sunday in Sin City. At last some of his competitors are taking solace in knowing that the season is
merely three races old — and a lot can, and inevitably will, change before a champion is crowed at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November. “It’s early,” said Kyle Busch, after finishing a distant runner-up to Harvick last weekend at Las Vegas. “This is only Race 3 — we aren’t worried yet. Show me that [in] race 26 through 36.” Reigning series champion Martin Truex Jr., likewise, is
quick to dispel the notion that Harvick’s early-season performance is cause for concern. “It’s a marathon and it’s a grind,” Truex said. “Honestly, it really [only] matters where you’re at when those last 10 races start, and I’ve learned that over the past few years. Obviously, you want to run good, be consistent and get stage points and all those things, but just being

race preview consistent and continuing to work on our cars — we’ll get there.” As for Harvick, well, he plans to keep his early-season success going for as long as he possibly can. And, at least historically-speaking, Phoenix seems like a pretty good place for him to do just that. “I’m just fortunate to be riding the wave,” said Harvick, who in December celebrated his 42nd birthday. “You can call me old, you can call us old, but cars are fast, and things are going well.” Well enough for the rest of the Monster Energy Series garage to sit up and take notice. Even if they’re not willing to concede defeat this weekend or any other weekend. “Two weeks in a row, they have had some things figured out,” driver Kasey Kahne said of Harvick and his No. 4 team. “They are on a roll right now. I thought they were at the end of last year. I thought they were really rolling.

They have carried that over and probably even gained a little more.” Harvick, for his part, believes the credit for his stellar start to 2018 belongs somewhere other than himself. “As you look at the last two weeks and our 1.5mile program in general, it has been really good since I started here at SHR [in 2014],” Harvick said after
leading 214 of 267 laps and sweeping all three stages at Las Vegas. “They put a lot of effort into everything we do from every standpoint to get these cars going like they are. I have to thank everyone from Stewart-Haas Racing. [Co-owners] Gene [Haas] and Tony [Stewart], it is fun to have them here when we win. Everybody who helps put this thing on the racetrack, we couldn’t do it without them.”

Five to Watch at phoenix by jared turner
▶▶ Kevin Harvick has captured the last two races in convincing fashion and now heads to a track where he’s the Monster Energy Series’ all-time wins leader. This doesn’t at all bode well for the competition. ▶▶ One driver who could pose a challenge for Kevin Harvick at Phoenix is defending spring race winner Ryan Newman. Then again, with a best finish of eighth in three races, Newman hasn’t exactly set the woods on fire in 2018. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. finished a Phoenix career-best third last fall, but continues to search for his first victory at the 1-mile desert track. Sunday could be the reigning series champion’s time to get it done. ▶▶ Substituting for Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Phoenix in November 2016, Alex Bowman turned heads with a stellar performance and sixth-place finish. Now the full-time driver of the No. 88, Bowman has a golden opportunity to shine. ▶▶ Ryan Blaney started from the pole at Las Vegas and was the highestfinishing Team Penske driver with his fifth-place result. Expect the thirdgeneration driver to be fast, again, this weekend in the Valley of the Sun.

here are a handful of NASCAR legends who achieved iconic status without risking their lives at every turn. Broadcaster Ken Squier is among that select group. Born April 10, 1935, Squier’s family owned and operated radio station WDEV in Waterbury, Vermont. “My dad used to work the fairs with the harness racing and the bigger fairs

would have sprint car racing on the weekends,” Squier said about his introduction to auto racing. “That was pretty exciting stuff for a kid – and I never grew up.” After trying his hand at racing a stock car, Squier began working local races as a public address announcer. He was eventually hired by the France family to assemble a radio network – Motor Racing Network – to broadcast many of the phoenix preview: march 8, 2018

NASCAR races. As sports television expanded during the 1970s, the networks became interested in racing and they needed announcers familiar with the sport, so Squier transitioned from radio to TV. While working as a reporter for “CBS Sports Spectacular,” Squier brought forward the idea of televising the Daytona 500 live from flag to flag. fter Ryan Ellis stepped away from trying to race full-time, he never knew whether or not the opportunity to compete in NASCAR would ever come back. But thanks to BJ McLeod Motorsports, he was able to run the XFINITY Series season-opener at Daytona International Speedway and hopes there is more to come.
What was it like to get back in a racecar? “It’s different just because you’re at Daytona and there’s so much unknown. A lot of other tracks, you’re working on set-up and a lot of debrief. It’s cool to be back in a car. It wasn’t nearly as tough as I thought it would be. I think if I did it at Martinsville, Darlington, Bristol or Dover, it would’ve been a lot harder to get acclimated.” After becoming Matt DiBenedetto’s PR rep, did you ever think you’d have a shot to race again? “Every time you get out of the car, you never know if you’re going to get back in. I always treated it like that. Every time after that was a surprise. This came up at the end of last year with Densify. Even this one, I don’t even know if I’m ever going to race again. I’m going to treat it like my last one. But I’m going to do everything I can to make sure it’s not my last race.” phoenix preview: march 8, 2018

hris Minton, transporter driver for Team Penske and driver Brad Keselowski, has fond memories of growing up around a couple of North Carolina’s most storied short tracks. He remembers how he fell in love with stock car racing by joining his family for what was a closing chapter of NASCAR history. “My first Cup race was at North Wilkesboro Speedway when I was real little,” Minton said. “I stood on my Dad’s shoulders and watched them race during the last Cup event there in 1997. My father
was a spotter at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston Salem, N.C., and I also worked there as a spotter as well before my driving began.” Minton started his racing career by working in the pits at local dirt and asphalt tracks. He applied for a position at Team Penske in 2016 and began as an intern with aspirations of learning how to drive transporters. He studied hard, received his license, and joined the Penske operation fulltime in October of 2016. His job is to co-drive to all 36 Cup series events in 2018 and keep the transporter in top shape when in the garage. “We drive as a team the whole time,” Minton said. “We can work a total of 14 hours but can’t drive but 11 hours. At the track, I handle the ice coolers and clean and vacuum. And when the guys need something, they will find the truck drivers, which is myself or Mike Williams.” phoenix preview: march 8, 2018

evin Harvick’s dominating victory in Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was head-turning in its standard of excellence. For NASCAR West Coasters like the Californian Harvick, winning on NASCAR’s Western Swing has become a particular source of pride. And statistics show, winning happens a lot for
the West Coasters on the sport’s Western Swing. This week’s top-three finishers at Vegas, for example, all hail from the region. In addition to Harvick, from Bakersfield, Calif., runner-up Kyle Busch is a Las Vegas native and third-place finisher Kyle Larson is from Elk Grove, Calif. Five Monster Energy NASCAR Cup drivers from the West – Harvick, Busch, Larson, Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch account for 33 wins at the three #NASCARGoesWest tracks – Las Vegas, ISM Raceway in Phoenix, and Auto Club Speedway in California. Add another six wins – covering all three venues – if you count in California native, retired Cup champion Jeff Gordon’s work there. A.J. spotlight won yet on the Western Swing, but did earn the pole position at ISM Raceway in 2010 and has two top-10 starts in his last four Auto Club Speedway races. And Phoenix native, Alex Bowman won the pole position at his hometown track in 2016 driving for the injured Dale Earnhardt Jr. With a pair of trophies in three races already this season, Harvick is riding a huge swell of momentum into this week’s TicketGuardian 500 (3:30 ET on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM) at ISM Raceway. It is a venue where he has already produced a careerhighlight mark on his resume. He has a series-best eight wins at ISM Raceway and 19-top-10s in 30 starts. He won five of six races between 20132016, finishing runner-up in the only race during that stretch that he didn’t win. He hasn’t finished worse than sixth in the last nine ISM Raceway races. For Harvick, spending time out West is something he particularly looks forward to and this year he’s doing

something he’s never done before – competing in a NASCAR K&N West Series race at Kern County Raceway in his native Bakersfield. “To be brutally honest with you I am looking forward to going to race the K&N car more than any of them next Thursday - not because I don’t enjoy what I do here, but because I have never raced at Kern County Raceway in my hometown,” Harvick said last weekend in Las Vegas. “I like coming to all three of these races because I get to see so many fans and friends. The race of the three weeks
that we are out here, the four that I am going to race, the one I am looking forward to the most is the K&N race because it isn’t something I get to do all the time. “If I had to pick one out of the three [Cup races he is most fond of] I would pick California just because I love the surface and how much the cars wear out the tires and slide around and the multiple grooves and all the things that come with Auto Club Speedway.” Competing in a sport once traditionally associated with the Southeast, for these West Coast natives, racing in places

spotlight such as Las Vegas, Phoenix and California has been a chance to shine in front of the fans and supporters who watched them establish themselves and ascend at the local tracks throughout the region. That those same drivers seem to naturally fare so well “at home” is appreciated by team, by fan and by driver. And a trophy this weekend would surely be welcomed by Californian Jimmie Johnson, the sport’s seventime champion who hasn’t won a race since last Spring. His mark of 25 races since a victory is the longest in his career, albeit a small time frame by any competitive standard. And he’s returning to the land of victory donuts and champagne toasts. Johnson is second only to Harvick in trophy-hauls and optimism at ISM Raceway with four wins, three pole positions and 20 top-10 finishes in 29 starts at the track. He captured those four victories during a five-race span during the 2007-
09 seasons. He has four top-11 showings – and a pole – in the last six races at Phoenix. And if Arizona doesn’t prove to be the place that restores his winning ways, Johnson is the gold standard in his native California, the track where he hoisted his first of 83 trophies. He boasts a series best six wins at the 2-mile Auto Club Speedway. He has scored a pair of pole positions and accumulated 16 top-10 finishes in 23 starts at the track – his last win coming in 2016. Similarly, the Elk Grove, Calif. native Larson has proven himself top-shelf at Auto Club Speedway, winning from the pole position there last year. He was runner-up at the track in his Cup race debut there four years ago. With the exception of Larson (who was runner-up in the 2017 spring ISM Raceway race), Harvick, Johnson and both Busch brothers have victories at the always tough one-miler. Kyle Busch has finished in the top-five in his last five Phoenix
races including runner-up in 2016. His older brother Kurt won at ISM Raceway in 2005 and has top-10 finishes in five of the last seven races here. At Auto Club Speedway, Kyle Busch has three victories, including back-to-back wins in 2013-14. His older brother Kurt won at California in 2003 and has four top-10s in the last six races there. The opportunity to compete in front of a “hometown” crowd is something Kyle Busch says he appreciates for competitive and sentimental reasons. “Everybody hates the time change,” he said. “I use that to my advantage since I think I’m usually on West Coast time, anyway. I still haven’t gotten East Coast time down yet. “It’s fun for me. It’s a cool atmosphere and the weather is great without the humidity. If it’s hot out, it’s nice and warm. And if it’s cold, it’s a crisp cold. “It’s still home and I love being out West.”

Smithfield Foods Donation Brings New Indoor Archery Facility to Victory Junction By press release
T
he Smithfield Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Smithfield Foods, Inc., is pleased to announce its gift of $500,000 to Victory Junction, a children’s camp committed to enriching the lives of children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses by providing life-changing camp experiences. Smithfield’s donation will fund the camp’s new indoor archery range.
Since 2004 Victory Junction has served 47,903 children and their family members through a variety of programs - onsite through summer and family weekend camps and offsite through the camp’s outreach program, Reach, which brings camp-like experiences to children in hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses. The new and improved Smithfield Foods Archery Range will provide a safe gathering place for campers to learn archery, make friends, and enjoy the adventures and experiences of camp life-a welcomed break for children who spend most of their year enduring medical treatments or hospital visits. “Historically, the archery range has been phoenix preview: march 8, 2018

spotlight among the most popular program venues at Victory Junction,” said Chad Coltrane, chief executive officer of Victory Junction. “The activity is currently offered at an open-air range but is only operational when weather permits. It is also positioned in an area of Victory Junction’s campus that is subject to flooding during heavy rains. Smithfield’s generous gift will allow us to create an indoor venue for this activity to provide uninterrupted fun for our campers, regardless of inclement weather.” Construction of the new indoor facility began on Jan. 31, 2018, and is expected to be completed by May 1, 2018. Like all facilities at Victory Junction, the Smithfield
Foods Archery Range will meet the rigorous safety standards of the American Camp Association and will be staffed and supported by certified professionalsallowing campers of all ages and abilities to enjoy the activity. Victory Junction was the dream of Adam Petty, a fourth-generation race car driver from the famous Petty family and a rising star in the sport. After Adam’s tragic passing from a racing accident in 2000, the Petty family realized his dream of a camp to serve children with serious medical conditions through the opening of Victory Junction in 2004. Smithfield, a longtime sponsor and supporter of NASCAR, applauds
Victory Junction, the Petty family, and their important connection to the NASCAR community. “Smithfield Foods is proud to support Victory Junctionan incredible place where campers experience positive, life-changing impacts well beyond their time at camp,” said Keira Lombardo, senior vice president of corporate affairs for Smithfield Foods and president of the Smithfield Foundation. “We’re pleased that the indoor archery center will provide yet another bright spot at camp where children can gain confidence in their abilities and what they can achieve.” For more information about Victory Junction and its camp programming, visit victoryjunction.org.

“What I love about racing is being able to push the limits of the impossible to the edge, and nudge it.” – Dr. Jason Cormier, Motorsports Safety Group
Motorsports safety group makes racing safer By Dan Guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness
training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes and to provide racing’s brandloyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. Dr. Cormier is particularly qualified to speak to the relationship between racing and safety since he races
shifter karts professionally. He’s been interested in the sport for as long as he can remember. “With any racer, it probably starts outside the car,” Cormier said. “I can recall doing things as silly as racing to see who gets to the door first. I was racing on lawn mowers with my brothers at the age of 6.” Cormier now races go-karts at top speeds of up to 130 mph. He has established relationships with multiple racing organizations, such as ARCA, NASCAR, Formula One, USAC and NHRA. “What I love about racing is being able to push the limits of the impossible to the edge, and nudge it,” Cormier said. “There’s an adrenaline rush that comes with it that is indescribable. Racers will say it’s the body and soul’s way of breathing, but being able to push that machine and your

spoltight skill set to the limit engages an unbridled adrenalin rush more than anything.” As an internationally recognized brain surgeon, Cormier has been able to engage companies to establish new technologies to diagnose and rehabilitate head injuries. He is now augmenting his current efforts on prevention. “Motorsports Safety Group is excited that we’ve come this far in such a short time,” Cormier said. “We owe a great deal to both the drivers and the racing organizations for embracing our insight.” Cormier has found that his racing background gives him more credibility when talking with race teams. “I am able speak to and understand the lingo – whether it’s regarding G forces, drafting, tire grading, steering pull, tire/ shocks ratios, etc.,” Cormier explained, “and on the other side, implications and educating from a medical
prevention and intervention standpoint. “I’m not just a doctor who comes in saying, ‘We’re trying to get you out of this car,’” Cormier said. “My approach is to try to prepare them appropriately so they can enjoy the sport longer and walk away from the sport with their faculties, to better enjoy retirement and most importantly, to remember it!.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “It would be difficult to say to someone, ‘You’re pushing the limits a bit too much,’” Cormier said. “The racerathletes will continue to defy the odds and challenge the physics of what they believe should happen. To stymie that progression and excitement they bring to themselves and the
public, it would render them unrecognizable to both the public and to themselves. “My role is to educate them as to how they can be safer and MSG is excited about the technology that we hope will help prevent or reduce concussions, and so far there are very promising results that will help mitigate those causational vectors of force.” For the specifics on that new technology, race fans will have to stay tuned. “Our team has put real thought into who we’ve engaged and the racing organizations that we’ve engaged,” Cormier said. “We hope to introduce new technology in 2018 with a plan to build 300 to 400 percent of what we did in 2017. There are many more exciting things to come. We thank all of you for embracing our insight and we encourage you to follow us on social media and speak to us when you see us on the track.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,
Oliva released its Serie V to great acclaim and in 2007 it was rated 4th best cigar with a 93 rating. Oliva cigars continually ranks as one of the best cigars of the year. In 2012, the family released a new Serie V the Melanio edition to honor the man who started it all. Two years later in 2014, the Serie V Melanio would be named the Cigar of the Year with a 96 rating! Near perfection. Just this year, the Serie V rated a 95 and
was the number 3 cigar of the year for 2017. In addition, to the highly rated Serie cigars, Oliva also makes the Nub, which also makes the year’s best cigar list. In fact, Oliva cigars have remained on Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 cigars of the year for 12 years straight. On top of that, Oliva believes in keeping prices in check. The company’s cigars start at under $4 and go up to about $15. The highly rated Serie V belicoso is just over $8.00 depending on local taxes.

Simply Flawless Florian Is to Race a Ford to Victory By Ben White
M
echanic turned racer Jimmy Florian was the first driver in NASCAR history to wheel a Ford to victory, at Dayton Speedway in Dayton, Ohio on June 25, 1950. The win was considered an upset in the 100-lap feature event over NASCAR stars Curtis Turner, Lee Petty and Bill Rexford, the eventual Strictly Stock division champion that season. Florian, a native of Cleveland, led 40 of the scheduled 200 laps. The summer heat prompted him to remove his shirt in Victory Lane. Known for his infectious smiles, he was only
27 years old the day he sealed the deal and won his lone NASCAR race. Sadly, Florian passed away on Feb. 14, 1999 at age 75. Bill Whitley described his close friend in a Sept. 29, 1999 interview at Martinsville Speedway provided by FordPerformance.com. “The night he won the race against [Curtis] Turner, [Joe] Weatherly -- all the big boys were there -- he just outdrove them, that’s all,” Whitley said. “We talked about that for years and years and years. I kept telling him there was no way he could outrun those Oldsmobiles with a flathead Ford, but we had been running on that track seven nights a week in midgets and sprint cars. It was just a fact that we were very familiar with it (the speedway) and they weren’t. He just outdrove them.” phoenix preview: march 8, 2018

Coolant leak failures can be repaired with K-Seal.
Not Your Grandfather’s Stop Leak
C
oolant leak failures are one of the most common reasons for roadside breakdowns. It’s that dreaded feeling when you realize that you’ve got a coolant leak. Maybe it’s the radiator, or the water pump, or worse – the head or the block. You’re likely looking at a bill of hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars to get your vehicle
back on the road. In the past, the early days, you may have been told to try adding pepper, egg, coffee grounds, or even mustard powder in the cooling system to get that leak stopped. More recently someone may have told you to try a stop leak common on the shelves of most auto parts stores. But a lot of those products
contain sodium silicate or liquid glass, the same ingredient they used to seize the engines during “Cash for Clunkers.” Sure the radiator might have been plugged but often other parts of the cooling system were too! But hold on. What if there was a safe way for you to get your trusty friend back on the road for less than

spotlight the cost of a KFC family meal? Well there is, with K-Seal Multi-Purpose Permanent Coolant Leak Repair. Made in the USA, K-Seal is a global bestselling cooling system leak sealer with over 6 million bottles sold. It’s a favorite with professional technicians and here’s what a few of them had to say about it recently: “It’s like magic. If it was the 17th century those who make it would be burned at the stake.” “It’s about the only thing I’ve heard that works. We sell it by the caseload.” “I’ve repaired many a car with K-Seal and I know it works.” (Actual testimonial from independent market survey
Dec 2017) We asked Patrick O’Brien, CEO of K-Seal, what makes K-Seal different from all the other stop leaks on the shelf? “K-Seal is the next generation stop leak technology,” O’Brien said. “We’ve developed a ceramic microfiber formula that is safe to use with all types of coolant / antifreeze. Plus, K-Seal was the first multi-purpose formula designed to fix leaks in all hard parts of the cooling system, including the head, head gasket, block, radiator, heater core, water pump casing and freeze plug. It’s safe to use in all water cooled engines from motor cycles right up to heavy duty trucks, and
everything in between. It even fixed a leak on a Top Fuel dragster, and when K-Seal makes a repair it is permanent. It’s way beyond your Grandfather’s old stop leak.” “K-Seal is the only product to have been independently university tested to the ASTM standard for coolant leak repair products. This means it will seal a leak when it’s meant to but it positively will not block even the narrowest waterways in the cooling system. Plus K-Seal is safe for use with aluminium heads including the Northstar block.” www.kseal.com

Cain Daytona
C
ain Daytona is the latest release from Studio Tobac. The Jalapa Ligero is more refined than other Ligeros. Jalapa Ligero, plus Cain’s triple fermentation, makes Cain Daytona a medium to full-bodied, smooth, rich and flavorful smoke. Making a Straight Ligero cigar requires a unique understanding of the leaf. Ligero comes from the top of the tobacco plant. Its direct exposure to the sun darkens and thickens the leaf. Smaller than leaves lower on the plant, it also enjoys a concentration of nutrients. Habano Seed Ligero is recognized as the most full flavored leaf. Additionally, the region in which this Habano Seed is grown plays a significant role in its flavor and strength. Jalape Ligero is the smoothest of these powerhouses. Jalapa is the northern most tobacco region of Nicaragua. Jalapa Ligero is grown in a valley and enjoys less direct sun, the result is a full body leaf with a more noticeable range of flavor. Cain Daytona is exclusively manufactured and distributed by Tabacalcera Oliva Cigar Co. Learn more at CainCigars.com.
