Silly Seasons Begins And Record Setting TV Ratings In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through some of the biggest stories of the week from around the NASCAR world. This week not only brings us some exciting news about last week’s race at Michigan, but with the playoffs becoming more and more serious by the day, we also have the first pieces of silly season news coming out. First up, the ratings are in from last week’s Consumer’s Energy 400 at Michigan. There was a massive change over the trend of the past years, and Eric takes us through the numbers, where they 0 0 4

came from, and what impact it will have on the sport moving forward. And then we have the first of the silly season news. In his special segment on the playoff bubble powered by Thera-Gesic, Eric takes us through drivers like Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, and more to see where they stand as the season comes to a head. So which driver will be the most nervous heading into the last few points races of the season? Who needs a win badly, and who just needs a few more lucky stage wins? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

t’s getting down to crunch time for the drivers who have yet to lock up a berth in the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Their next opportunity comes on Saturday night under the lights at Bristol Motor Speedway where — if history is any indicator — there’s no telling what’s liable to go down. Here are five things to watch for in the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race. By Jared Turner

‘Rowdy’ Busch’s Bid For The Bristol Sweep
N
o driver in NASCAR’s top series has a better record at Bristol over the past dozen or so years than Kyle Busch. An eight-time premier series winner in Thunder Valley, Busch has compiled a truly remarkable Bristol resume that would be the envy of virtually anyone. Busch continued his Bristol mastery earlier this year, winning the spring race to make it three victories in his last four starts at the high-banked oval where he won for the first time back in 2007 as a member of Hendrick Motorsports. No one will be surprised if Busch makes it four-out-of-five this weekend, given his stellar history here both recently and dating back several years. Surprisingly, or perhaps not so much, Busch has managed just one season sweep at the Tennessee short track. That sweep came all the way back in 2009, which means Busch would undoubtedly love to accomplish it for the second time now a decade later.

Generalized Aggression
T
here is no track on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule that is more synonymous with fender banging, short tempers and hard-nosed aggression than Bristol Motor Speedway. That’s especially true for the August night race, which has a colorful history of controversial finishes — usually the result of one driver booting another out of the way in a last-ditch effort to score a win (remember when Dale Earnhardt “tried to rattle Terry Labonte’s cage” that time?). With Bristol now being the last short-track race before the playoff field is locked in, it’s the last really good chance for a driver near the playoff bubble to put it all on the line and go for broke — even if it means knocking one or more of his competitors out of the way in the process. What isn’t acceptable at many tracks — such as deliberately wrecking another driver — is considered standard etiquette at Bristol, a .533-mile high-banked circuit.

Some Dice Rolling Among The Playoff Hopefuls
W
ith only three races left in the regular season, it’s that time of year when drivers and teams on or near the playoff bubble are willing to roll the proverbial dice if it means an opportunity to compete for a championship entering the final 10-week stretch. This kind of strategy is even more suitable for drivers and teams who are way down in points and know that winning a race is their only plausible pathway to a playoff berth. So, all factors notwithstanding, don’t be surprised if a number of drivers and teams opt for unconventional pit strategies over the next three weekends, in hopes of being lucky enough to steal a win and with it a spot in the playoffs. Bold strategy moves are particularly likely in scenarios such as late-race caution periods, when drivers and teams needing a win have a lot more to gain than lose by throwing the proverbial Hail Mary.

A Prime Opportunity For Some Real Payback
T
wo weekends ago at Watkins Glen, both Bubba Wallace and William Byron were furious with Kyle Busch and made their displeasure known. And, of course, the maddest driver of all might have been normally mild-mannered Jimmie Johnson, who after being spun by Ryan Blaney confronted the Team Penske driver on pit road and then lambasted Blaney during a post-race interview. Still steaming over the perceived injustices from the weekend prior, the angry parties all met up last weekend at Michigan International Speedway in an attempt to work out their differences or at least come to a better understanding of each other. While those meetings may have brought down the proverbial temperature in the room just a bit, it’s clear that tensions still linger. Saturday night’s race at Bristol — a short track known for all manner of beating and banging — is the perfect place for one or more ticked-off drivers to exact a little revenge.

Red-Hot Kevin Harvick’s Quest To Keep His Momentum Going
R
iding a streak of four consecutive top-10 finishes that included two victories, Kevin Harvick comes into Bristol as hands-down the hottest driver on the Monster Energy Series tour. But can the Stewart-Haas Racing driver keep the momentum going and carry it all the way into the playoffs? Veteran crew chief Rodney Childers is optimistic about the direction the No. 4 team is headed in but believes SHR as a whole still has some work to do as the playoffs loom ever closer. “We started the year off, and our cars weren’t where we needed to be, and we’ve continually got better and better,” Childers said after Harvick’s win this past weekend at Michigan International Speedway. “We’ve definitely made gains on it. We’re not perfect by any means, and we’ve still got to get a lot better. But we’re definitely in a lot better shape than we were at the beginning of the year.”

drivers to watch at Bristol
By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kevin harvick. Kevin Harvick has two wins in 37 starts at Bristol — the first victory coming during his days with Richard Childress Racing, and the second one coming with his current team at Stewart-Haas Racing. The better news for Harvick is that he approaches Thunder Valley this time with a lot of momentum, after going to Victory Lane twice in four weeks. ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Between Kyle Busch’s numerous Bristol wins in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series, it wouldn’t be farfetched to say that Victory Lane at the Tennessee short track is his second home. Will the Joe Gibbs Racing driver race like it again this weekend? ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. Martin Truex Jr. picked up a long-awaited first career Monster Energy Series short track triumph earlier this season when he prevailed at Richmond Raceway. Can the 2017 series champ add a second short-track win to his resume with a trip to Victory Lane this weekend at Bristol where he’s currently 0-for-27? ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson. Already on shaky ground with regard to his hopes of reaching the playoffs, Jimmie Johnson left Michigan last weekend in an even direr position after a self-inflicted error led to a bad finish. Will the seven-time series champ be able to turn it up a notch just in time or will he miss the playoffs for the first time ever? ▶▶ Kurt Busch. The defending race winner of the Bristol night race, Kurt Busch returns with a different team this year in Chip Ganassi Racing. Will he be able to earn the same result? Busch owns a total of six victories in Thunder Valley, so he certainly knows how to win here regardless of the year or the team for which he’s competing.

O
n July 1, 1989, Davey Allison, driver of the Robert Yates Racing Ford, kept Morgan Shepherd’s RAHMOC Enterprises Pontiac at bay over the final six laps to win the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Allison sealed the deal by avoiding a nine-car crash on the backstretch on lap 145 of the 160-lap race. He averaged 132.207 miles per hour after leading three times for 19 laps. All told, there were 12 cautions covering 42 laps for accidents involving 29 of the 40 cars in the field. The race was also slowed twice for rain. Allison’s Ford suffered the same mysterious backfiring and popping he had experienced at Charlotte, Dover and Richmond

earlier in the season. During one of his pit stops, his crew discovered and repaired a faulty coil and ignition box causing the problem. It was Allison’s first victory at the famed 2.5-mile high banked track. He joined his father Bobby Allison as a Daytona winner. The elder Allison enjoyed three Daytona 500 victories and three Pepsi 400 victories during his 25-year career. “Winning at Daytona is probably the most elusive victory that you can go for,” Allison said in post-race interviews as reported in the Orlando Sentinel. “The competition here is always so strong. It doesn’t matter if you have the strongest race car, you still have to have a lot of luck.”

This year, Haley graduated to the NASCAR Xfinity Series where he drives the No. 11 Chevrolet for Kaulig Racing In July, the 20-year-old Haley shocked the racing world when he won the rainshortened Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway on a strategy call. Driving for the upstart Spire Motorsports team, Haley was making only his third start in NASCAR’s premier series.

T
he opportunity to drive a go-kart during a birthday celebration peaked Justin Haley’s interest in racing and the youngster from the small town of Winamac, Indiana, began his competitive career at age 9 in Quarter Midgets. Born April 28, 1999, Haley is the nephew of former NASCAR team owner Todd Braun, so it’s no surprise he decided to pursue motorsports after capturing multiple Quarter Midget championships during a four-year span. Micro Sprints and Late Models were the next challenges on his dance card and Haley won a JEGS/All-Stars Tour feature in 2014, the same year he made his debut in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. Two years later, Haley won two races and finished among the top 10 in each of the 14 races en route to the Pro Series East title. Two seasons of NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series racing in 2017 and 2018 produced three wins, 12 top-five results and a third-place finish in the points.

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

n Chase Briscoe’s first full-time XFINITY Series season, the young Stewart-Haas Racing pilot is determined to get the job done. The 2016 ARCA Series champion is starting to heat up in car No. 98 following a win at Iowa, and things are looking quite good. ▶▶ What do you feel you’ve done well with? “The last couple of weeks have been the best we’ve been as far as unloading with good speed, qualifying well and starting up front. It’s a lot easier to get stage points. If we can do that, we’re going to be a serious contender in the championship hunt.” ▶▶ What’s it like to work with a team owned by a Cup champion? “It’s a huge deal, especially for myself because I grew up racing sprint cars in Indiana. For me, Tony Stewart was the guy I looked up to growing up. It’s pretty special to get to drive for your hero and getting into Victory Lane for your hero is even better.”

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.
Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. Magic Clear Lens is a cleaning, preservation, and maintenance treatment that instantly reveals a bright and clear headlight. Not only will your headlights look exceptionally better, but nighttime driving will be safer.

health and wellness
TM
msg: making racing safer By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down
0 4 8
Bristol preview: august 15, 2019
because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People
health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.
“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”
An MSG Partner – Brain Armor Motorsports Safety Group is planning to partner with The Healthy Brain Co. on a mission to positively impact the health and wellness of the brain – 86 billion neurons at a time. Brain Armor products are clinically proven, evidencedbased nutritional formula designed for the sole purpose of building strong, healthy brains through

researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”

Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner
N
ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side. Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.” Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance. “I always had a beagle growing up, and when I
0 5 2
Bristol preview: august 15, 2019
was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.” Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free. “They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said. “They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”
