he annual night race at Bristol Motor Speedway is always one of the more entertaining events on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule, and Saturday night’s showdown in Thunder Valley was no exception. Following are five key takeaways from the NRA Bass Pro Shops 500, a race won by Denny Hamlin but where surprising second-place finisher Matt DiBenedetto arguably stole the show. By Jared Turner

Jimmie Johnson’s Playoff Window Is Shrinking
O
nce again snake-bitten by misfortune, Jimmie Johnson came home a disappointing 19th at Bristol after early-race contact with Austin Dillon put the seven-time champion behind the proverbial eight-ball. Johnson, who was already struggling to remain on the lead lap, was dealt a major blow when Dillon’s No. 3 car suffered a tire failure right in front of the No. 48 Chevrolet. With nowhere to go, Johnson ran into Dillon and suffered some damage that left him even further behind. All things considered, 19th was a pretty respectable finish for Johnson, but the result didn’t do much for his already tenuous playoff hopes. With just two races left before the playoff field is set, Johnson is now 26 points behind bubble man Daniel Suarez. Johnson also needs to leapfrog Clint Bowyer, whom he trails by 24 points. Johnson’s best bet for making the playoffs at this point? Winning one of the two remaining regular-season races.

Kyle Busch Is Closing In On Regular Season Title But Feeling Frustrated
W
ith two races left in the regular season, Kyle Busch holds a 39-point lead in the standings over Joey Logano and is all but guaranteed of winning the Monster Energy Series’ regular season championship. But after a fourth-place finish at Bristol where Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin won for the second time in four weeks, Busch was in no celebratory mood. This despite leading five times for a total of 30 laps. “It ended a lot better than it started,” said Busch, who rolled off 31st. “It’s certainly better than some other situations, for sure. This M&M’S team just never gave up and kept working on it. Obviously Adam (Stevens, crew chief) and the guys do a really good job of being able to work on the car and constantly improve it and constantly make it better. We’re just flat out getting killed by our teammates right now, so we’ve got to get better.”

The Race Is On Between Daniel Suarez And Clint Bowyer
S
eparated by just two points, Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Clint Bowyer and Daniel Suarez suddenly find themselves entrenched in quite the battle for the final playoff spot. Neither had a particularly good or bad night at Bristol, which left the door open for the other to take advantage in the final two races of the regular season. The two teammates did engage in a hotly contested late-race battle at Bristol, however, with Bowyer ultimately coming home seventh, followed by Suarez in eighth. “It was pretty close,” Suarez said. “I feel like I was lucky that Clint has the experience that he has and he was able to keep his car out of the wall, because if it wasn’t for that, I was gonna hit him. Overall, it worked out well. The car was clean on that one. The spotter thought we had contact and we didn’t, so it was pretty tight, but it worked out well.”

Losing Has Never Hurt So Bad For Matt DiBenedetto
A
fter learning earlier in the week that he would not be retained as driver of the No. 95 Leavine Family Racing Toyota for 2020, an inspired Matt DiBenedetto drove the race of his life at Bristol and ultimately fell just short of his first career victory in NASCAR’s premier series. Leading 93 laps, DiBenedetto finished second after surrendering the top spot to Denny Hamlin with 12 laps to go. It was a bitter and crushing pill to swallow for DiBenedetto, who not only needed the win to secure a spot in the playoffs but is also now trying to do everything possible to shore up his future in NASCAR’s premier series where he is only guaranteed a ride through season’s end. After coming home in the runner-up spot on Saturday night, a visibly emotional DiBenedetto fought back tears during post-race interviews but received widespread praise for his efforts, with race winner Hamlin among those offering major props.

Denny Hamlin Has A Tremendous Wind At His Back
H
ands-down, Denny Hamlin is the hottest driver in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series right now. With a come-from-behind victory on Saturday night at Bristol, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver has won two of the past four races and made it six consecutive top-five finishes. How confident is Hamlin feeling about where things stand with his team with two races to go before the playoff grid is officially locked in? “I just can’t wait to get to a racetrack, in general,” said Hamlin, who rallied from two laps down at Bristol and executed a late-race pass on Matt DiBenedetto to pick up his fourth win of the 2019 season. “Doesn’t matter if it’s a road course or short track or superspeedway, anywhere. We can win every single week. Really for the last two months, it’s just been incredible the adjustments we’ve made as the season has gone on. We just keep getting better.”

Just sayin’ David Ragan will step away from racing after this season.
David Ragan Is As Good As They Come By Jared Turner
O
f the drivers in NASCAR’s premier series, David Ragan is the one I know best. We first got to know each other over a decade ago when David was driving for Roush Fenway Racing and I was in my first full-time motorsports writing gig. Assigned to craft an in-depth story about Ragan’s rise up through the NASCAR ranks, I spent some quality one-on-one time with the Unadilla, Georgia, native at his relatively small, personal race shop just north of Charlotte where he tinkers with old cars and spends many hours away from the track. Even back then, I was struck by Ragan’s maturity and measured outlook not only on the sport but on life. He’s one of the few drivers I’ve ever had dealings with who literally has no ego. The son of former NASCAR driver Ken Ragan, David grew up around the sport and understands better than most that treating people well is just as important as turning fast laps on Sunday afternoons. I’ve been blessed along the way to stay in touch with David,
0 1 6
Bristol Rearview: august 19, 2019
and there’s never been a time when I’ve approached him that he didn’t have a few minutes to chat. So when David announced last week that he was stepping down from full-time racing at season’s end to spend more time with his wife and daughters, I wasn’t surprised. That’s just the kind of guy he is. Here’s what David said in reply to an email I sent congratulating him on coming to his big decision: “Thanks for the note, Jared. I am grateful that the sport of NASCAR has been so good to me. I hope to still be around some, but it will be nice to spend some time with the family a little more.” That’s David. You won’t find a more sincere, down-to-earth guy anywhere. I wish him all the best. He deserves it.

PEAK Series Playoffs Start Getting Real Pure Point System Piles on Pressure for the Pros By: M atteo M archeschi
T
he playoffs are only one race away for the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series. Bristol is the only racetrack separating eight drivers from a chance to win $100,000 and the title of NASCAR champion. Let’s break down who’s in and who’s out of the playoffs heading into the final regular-season race. Unlike the top three NASCAR series, the Peak Series doesn’t use a win-and-you’rein system. The top eight in points make the playoffs, it’s
0 2 4
that simple. The top three in points, therefore, are mathematically locked into the playoffs. This includes FlipSid3 Tactics driver and points leader Ryan Luza, Michigan victor Garrett Lowe, and Team Dillon eSports driver Blake Reynolds. Behind them, three drivers can be pretty sure of their positions in the playoffs: JGR’s Bobby Zalenski, G2 eSports driver Keegan Leahy, and JR Motorsports pilot Michael Conti. All three drivers are over 25 points above the
Bristol Rearview: august 19, 2019
eight-place cutoff, and look likely to advance, barring disaster. The seventh, eighth, and ninth positions in points are where it gets interesting. Sitting seventh is Pocono winner Jimmy Mullis, only eight points above cutoff driver and three-time winner Zack Novak. The only driver who may be able to break into the playoffs who isn’t already in is ninth-place Nick Ottinger. Ottinger, like Mullis, has a win this season, but he finds himself outside the playoffs by seven points, and will need a very solid run and some misfortune for Novak or Mullis to fight for the title. Behind Ottinger is a 30-point gap back to Casey Kirwin and Christian Challiner. While these drivers are technically still in the hunt, it would take a miracle to get them in the playoffs. On Tuesday, August 20th, the Peak Series playoff grid will be set at Bristol Motor Speedway. The race can be watched live at 9 PM eastern time on iRacing’s Twitch channel or the iRacing eSports Network YouTube channel.

msg: making racing safer By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down

because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People
health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.
“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”
An MSG Partner – Brain Armor Motorsports Safety Group is planning to partner with The Healthy Brain Co. on a mission to positively impact the health and wellness of the brain – 86 billion neurons at a time. Brain Armor products are clinically proven, evidencedbased nutritional formula designed for the sole purpose of building strong, healthy brains through

researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”
