Christopher Bell Joins Leavine in the No. 95 In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp joins us for a late night news brief, this time covering the exciting news from Christopher Bell. It seems Christopher Bell will be headed to Leavine racing’s No. 95 car in the Cup Series, a car that was recently vacated by Matt Dibennedetto. Christopher Bell’s move up to the main racing series is not unexpected, given his incredible performance in the Xfinity Series so far in 2019. And he’ll be joined by his crew chief 0 0 4

from the Xfinity Series, who before that worked with Matt Kenseth, including helping deliver some 14 wins. Eric takes us through all of the fallout from this announcement. How will Bell fare against the upper ranks of Cup Drivers? How will Leavine Family Racing’s alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing change over the next year, as the relationship evolves? Find out all the fallout and more on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove.

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

Charlotte’s ROVAL plays host to the first elimination race of the 2019 Playoffs
A
s pressure-packed situations go, they don’t get any more so than Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoff elimination race on The ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Already one of the most unpredictable races on the schedule, the fact that four drivers will see their championship hopes go up in smoke takes the intensity to a whole new level. Following are five things to watch for. By Jared Turner

Erik Jones And The Hail Mary
W
hen NASCAR disqualified Erik Jones after unearthing issues with his car during post-race inspection last weekend at Richmond Raceway, the second-year Joe Gibbs Racing driver was effectively eliminated from the 2019 championship hunt barring a victory in Sunday’s elimination race on the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL. So are Jones and his No. 20 team capable of pulling a proverbial rabbit out of the hat this weekend at one of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ trickiest and most treacherous venues? If all the stars align perfectly, Jones could certainly get to Victory Lane and in so doing punch his ticket into Round of 12. But for that to happen, virtually everything will have to go right for Jones, and that could perhaps even mean his team trying an unconventional and, yes, risky pit strategy with the hope that it might just pay off and get him in the Winner’s Circle for just the third time as a Monster Energy Series driver.

A Ticked Off, Even More Reckless Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
O
n Wednesday, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. learned that he would not be retained by Roush Fenway Racing for the 2020 season as the organization plans to move in a different direction by putting Chris Buescher in the seat of its No. 17 car. Aside from the obvious fact that Stenhouse is now looking for work in 2020, here’s the other implication of his pink slip from RFR. If you thought he was reckless and tore up a lot of equipment in the season’s first 28 races, just wait until the final eight. No longer racing to keep his ride, Stenhouse will likely be more aggressive than ever, which probably means even more wrecks and run-ins. It doesn’t help that the news of his imminent release from Roush Fenway will no doubt still be weighing heavily on his mind this weekend at the ROVAL, a track that couldn’t be any more conducive to someone like Stenhouse driving completely over their head.

Another Completely Wild And Entertaining Race And Finish
N
o race in 2018 was wilder than the one on The ROVAL, which ended with Jimmie Johnson and Martin Truex Jr. wrecking while battling for the lead. Most drivers expect a similar level of craziness this weekend at the track that includes a portion of the familiar Charlotte Motor Speedway quad-oval in its 2.28-mile layout. “I think it will probably come down to a late-race restart,” playoff driver William Byron said. “Last year’s race I think even had a fuel mileage aspect to it until the final few laps, and everyone had really old tires no grip whatsoever. You try to prepare for that any way you can.” Sunday’s race will feature a new twist — an expanded configuration of The ROVAL’s challenging chicane that will likely create additional passing opportunities and more side-by-side action throughout the 17-turn course. The chicane’s original layout was 32 feet wide at its widest point, but the new version will be 54 feet at its widest.

Some Serious Bubble Bursting
N
o matter what happens in Sunday’s race on the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL, this much is certain: Four drivers are going to leave feeling extremely disappointed while 12 leave feeling reasonably upbeat. Of course, the four drivers not in such good spirits will be the ones who get bounced from title contention in this first of three playoff elimination races. Aside from Erik Jones, who needs nothing less than a victory to advance, the drivers with ground to make up are Kurt Busch, Clint Bowyer and Alex Bowman. Just ahead of them and by no means comfortable are William Byron, Aric Almirola, Ryan Blaney and Ryan Newman. Any one of the bottom eight playoff drivers could conceivably fail to advance with even the slightest mishap or setback on Sunday afternoon. For these guys and their respective teams, the pressure to perform at the highest level and have an incident-free race has never been greater.

Martin Truex Jr.’s Bid To Sweep The Round Of 16
S
o far, the playoffs couldn’t have gone any better for Martin Truex Jr. Will the Joe Gibbs Racing driver keep the momentum going and make it a clean sweep of the three races in the Round of 16? History has proven that it’s difficult but not impossible to sweep a whole round. Joey Logano actually did it in 2015, winning all three races in the Round of 12. If Truex manages to sweep the Round of 16, it would be even more impressive than Logano’s feat since Truex would have gone to Victory Lane at a mile-and-a-half track (Las Vegas), a short track (Richmond) and a road course (The ROVAL) — three tracks that couldn’t be any more different. Truex will also be seeking a little redemption when he inevitably reflects on his last-lap collision with Jimmie Johnson one year ago that cost him a potential win and allowed Ryan Blaney to sneak through at the last moment and steal the victory.

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Martin truex jr. Martin Truex Jr. has made it two wins in as many playoff races and owns a series-high six victories on the season. One of those wins came on the road course at Sonoma Raceway back in June, so being at a road course this weekend should only further boost Truex’s chances. Plus, Truex nearly won this race one year ago. ▶▶ Jimmie johnson. Jimmie Johnson’s narrowest and most heartbreaking defeat of his winless 2018 campaign came in last season’s inaugural race on the ROVAL. You can believe the seven-time champion hasn’t forgotten about it and would love nothing more than to play the role of playoff spoiler this weekend. ▶▶ Kyle Larson. Kyle Larson, though still winless in 2019, has quietly pieced together a solid season and is in a good position to move on to the next round. Though not necessarily known as a road racer, Larson was in the hunt for the victory last season at the ROVAL before being involved in a late-race accident. ▶▶ Erik Jones. If there’s one playoff driver who has literally no reason to hold anything back, it’s Erik Jones, who needs nothing less than a victory to advance. Jones has been up and down this season but seems to have turned a corner in recent times. With a win on Sunday, he would join his three fellow Joe Gibbs Racing teammates in the next round. ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Given Kyle Busch’s success on road courses, it’s impossible not to include the 2015 Monster Energy Series champ in the discussion about this weekend. Busch has been fairly quiet over the past couple of months, however (at least in terms of performance), so he’s far from the series’ hottest driver at the moment.

Terry Labonte took the checkered flag at the Southern 500 in 2003.
Amazing Day of Glory Labonte wins the Southern 500 in 2003 By Ben white
O
n Aug. 31, 2003, Terry Labonte, driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, logged the 22nd and final Cup series victory of his 37-year career. That day, the Corpus Christi, Texas, native took the lead in the prestigious Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway on lap 335 of the 367-lap event. A final caution displayed for a crash by driver Robby Gordon led to a final flawless pit stop. He sealed the deal by getting off pit road first and held it for the remaining 33 laps. The two-time champion started the event on the famed 1.366-mile South Carolina speedway in the third position and was as far back as 18th in the 43-car field. Like all drivers,

Labonte’s career had its up and downs. The 2003 Southern 500 victory was possibly Labonte’s greatest win. “(Crew chief) Jim Long and the guys were great,” Labonte told NBC Sports in victory lane. “They did an awesome job with pit stops, and that’s what got us out front there at the end. We’re a better team than what we were a year ago. “To win the last Labor Day Southern 500 down here is pretty cool. It’s a great day for the Kellogg’s team.” NASCAR moved the Southern 500 from Labor Day weekend in 2004 but reestablished it at Darlington in September of 2015, where it remains on the schedule.

Aric Almirola helps break world record for fastest strike Bowling and NASCAR. Those aren’t often two words you often hear in the same sentence, but Go Bowling is changing that narrative. Stewart-Haas Racing and Go Bowling driver Aric Almirola and the world’s #1 professional bowler Jason Belmonte, brought both together for one incredible feat. Almirola and Belmonte, an Australian who bowls on the Go Bowling PBA Tour, completed a stunt like no other at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sept. 4. Together, the two executed the world’s 0 2 2

fastest strike — 140 mph — at the start/ finish line of the Roval course, while wearing matching Go Bowling fire suits in a specially decked out Go Bowling Ford Mustang. Almirola was driving the No. 10 Ford with Belmonte in the passenger seat throwing a bowling ball down the front stretch of the Roval course. It took several attempts for the two to get the right line and the right location to drop the ball and achieve the world’s fastest strike. Check out the full video above.

Joey Logano, 29, drives the No. 22 Team Penske Ford in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.
36 under 30:
Joey Logano By K eith Waltz
Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008 when it was announced he would replace the departing Tony Stewart in the team’s No. 20 Cup Series car for the 2009 season. Moving to Team Penske in 2013, Logano has recorded 23 NASCAR Cup Series victories and has finished among the top-10 in the series standings six times, including 2018 when he claimed the ultimate prize. Away from the track, Logano enjoys working on classic cars, riding 4-wheelers and spending time with his wife, Brittany, and their son, Hudson.
A
s Joey Logano completes his 11th season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, it’s easy to forget the defending series champion has yet to celebrate his 30th birthday. .J. Ford, jack man for Joe Gibbs Racing and driver Kyle Busch, saw his first NASCAR race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1995 at the age of 12. His father and grandfather watched many NASCAR events together at race tracks as well as through television broadcasts. “That was kind of their time to communicate and spend time together,” Ford said. “So when I was little, I would sit at the kitchen table listening to them. I was racing motocross then and traveling all over the place. My Dad actually worked a few races as a tire carrier.” After suffering several concussions and broken bones as a result

“We pride ourselves on always being ready, whether it’s at the front of pit road or the tail end. We have all of the tools we need to get the job done. You have to have all of your tools prepared to do a pit stop at a moment’s notice. That’s crucial these days.”
crew member profile: T.J. Ford of motorcycle racing accidents, Ford eventually decided to try another form of competition. In 2005, Dale Earnhardt Jr. formed JR Motorsports and wanted athletes that had not pitted race cars before. Ford’s trainer in motocross also trained members of pit crews and worked with crew members at Dale Earnhardt Inc. Ford was given a tryout and was initially placed as a backup jack man. He has been with various top NASCAR teams over the past decade, including Joe Gibbs Racing since 2015. “I’ve been a part of competition my whole life,” Ford said. “On pit road, there are 40 teams trying to be the best. Most importantly, it’s getting the adjustments made that we need to get done and make the car faster on pit road.” Ford must be sharp physically and mentally each time the team’s Toyotas come down pit road. “We are not only envisioning a well-executed pit stop but also getting a lot of feedback on the radio, such as adjustments and how we are going to do them,” Ford said. “A lot of things involve last-minute calls that we have to rely on our practices for. It seems calm and peaceful but it’s really a bit chaotic. There are a lot of moving parts and you’re never standing still.”

Nascar Release
Buescher in, Stenhouse out of Roush Fenway’s No. 17 ride for 2020
R
icky Stenhouse Jr. has lost his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series ride for the 2020 season, as Chris Buescher will take over the No. 17 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, the team announced Wednesday. Stenhouse has been a part of Roush Fenway since 2008 — that includes his ARCA Series days — and piloted the No. 17 since 2013. During his time in the national series, Stenhouse won two Xfinity Series titles (2011 and 2012) and two Monster Energy Series races (both in 2017). His best finish among the top competitors was 13th in the 2017 final standings. “We can’t say enough about Ricky and his contributions to Roush Fenway Racing,” team co-owner and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jack Roush said in the release. “We’re proud to have been a part of Ricky’s development from ARCA to Xfinity and ultimately the Cup

Series. He has served as a great Chris Buescher (right) will representative to our partners, be taking over the seat while helping to accumulate for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. numerous accolades, wins and (left) in the No. 17 Roush multiple championships on the Fenway Racing Ford. race track. We wish him well as he enters the next chapter of his career.” Stenhouse has never been a part of another team — save for one Cup start he made for the Wood Brothers in 2011. He has brought RFR 15 top fives and 33 top 10s at NASCAR’s top level, and the 2019 season isn’t over. Meanwhile, Buescher is returning to Roush Fenway as a former member of the team’s development driver program. He first joined RFR in 2009 and went on to win the 2012 ARCA Series championship with Roulo Brothers Racing. He made his Xfinity Series debut in 2011 and then became full-time in 2014. The next year, his last at the time with RFR, Buescher won Roush his eighth NASCAR championship, leading the Xfinity Series standings for 24 consecutive weeks. “We are certainly excited to have Chris back in the fold at Roush Fenway Racing,” Roush said.

Nascar Release Christ Buescher will be leaving JTG Daugherty at the end of the season.
“He has a long history with our organization and we’ve always been a big fan of Chris and his racing style. We have watched his progress with great interest over the last couple of seasons and we are looking forward to having him in the No. 17 as we continue to grow our program next season.” The same year Buescher won the Xfinity Series championship he also made his Monster Energy Series debut. He did six races in 2015 for Front Row Motorsports and was one of the team’s fulltime driver in 2016. The next year, though, Buescher switched to JTG Daugherty Racing and has been there ever since. “We were in the final strokes of the contract when learning that Chris has gone in a different direction,” JTG Daugherty Racing team owner Tad Geschickter said in a statement. “We appreciate all of the efforts from Chris through the past three seasons at JTG Daugherty Racing. When the dust settles, we will begin the process of searching for our next driver to fill the No. 37 seat for the 2020 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.” During his time in the Monster Energy Series, Buescher has won one race and had a best overall finish of 16th in the final standings — both in 2016. He has accumulated four top fives 0 4 2

and 12 top 10s entering this weekend’s race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course. Buescher released his own statement later Wednesday night. “Jack Roush and John Henry have emphasized that they believe in my ability to compete at a high level in their race cars; and that is the expectation,” Buescher said. “This is a bit of a homecoming for me and I am very excited to be able to return to Roush Fenway and pick up where we left off in 2015; winning the NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship. “… This news also brings sadness that my time at JTG Daugherty Racing driving the No. 37 will come to an end in 2019. I am forever grateful to Tad and Jodi Geschickter, Brad Daugherty, and Gordon Smith for giving me the opportunity to drive for them over the past three years.”

MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven
0 5 4

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and
health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate
Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in
0 5 6

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.

Surecan ▶▶ The award-winning SureCan was designed with all of your gas-powered machines in mind. With patented technology, the SureCan offers its user the best experience they have ever had with a fuel can. The flexible spout rotates down more than 180 degrees and fits perfectly into any machine’s fill location, while the thumb-release trigger on top controls the flow. By pulling straight back on the safety trigger and then down on the thumb button, fuel is released immediately while you stay in complete control. When you notice your tank is almost full, slowly release the thumb button and allow the excess fuel to drain from the top of the spout before rotating it back up. No more bending over, tipping your fuel can forward and holding it in an awkward position. The SureCan is a high-quality fuel dispensing machine. Learn more at surecanusa.com. 0 7 0
