The Wildest Comeback in NASCAR History? In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all the exciting action from this weekend’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Roval track. The weekend had everything from crashes to upsets, so let’s have Eric take us through it. First up the fans took issue this weekend with some of the officiating from NASCAR, particularly their rules about penalties for missing the chicanes. Within the first lap, drivers were sloppy, missing turns, 0 0 4

and generally put on a less than stellar performance, and some of the officiating was inconsistent. Eventually the real contenders did take their positions, and Eric walks us through the context of all the exciting moves we saw on the track. The highlight, of course, was Chase Elliot completely blowing turn one. So what did it all mean, and where did the late race excitement put Charlotte on the Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

ell, that was wild. Sunday’s Bank of America ROVAL 400 on the 2.28-mile, 17-turn ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway was predictably crazy and, as expected, culminated with numerous drivers feeling relief while others ruminated on what might have been. Following are five takeaways from Sunday’s elimination event — the third and final race in the Round of 16 — won by fan-favorite Chase Elliott. By Jared Turner

Kyle Busch Is Still Missing His Early-Season Mojo

S

ince winning four of the season’s first 14 races, Kyle Busch has been shut out of Victory Lane in the past 15. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver’s frustrations continued Sunday on the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL where he never led a lap, finished 12th in each of the first two stages and finished the day in 37th after running off course and into a tire barrier during the final stage. As a result, his car suffered significant damage from which he couldn’t recover. “It just wasn’t our weekend,” said Busch, who started from the 17th position. “I don’t really know why we had the trouble we’ve had with our car. It’s not the way you want to run in the playoffs. We are fortunate that we had such a strong regular season and that we have the playoff points that we have. We just can’t keep relying on that as we go through the playoffs.”

Hendrick Motorsports Is On The Upswing

W

hile the 2019 season has been dominated by Joe Gibbs Racing and to a lesser extent Team Penske, Hendrick Motorsports has slowly but surely found more speed in its cars. That was never more evident than on Sunday, when all four Hendrick drivers finished in the top 10 and Hendrick drivers Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman claimed the top two finishing positions, respectively. Since being shut out of Victory Lane in the season’s first nine races, Hendrick drivers have combined to win four times in the past 20 events, courtesy of Elliott’s victories at Talladega, Watkins Glen and the ROVAL, and Bowman’s first career win that he recorded in May at Kansas. While the odds are still strongly in favor of a JGR or Team Penske driver ultimately winning the championship, the fact that all three Hendrick drivers in the playoffs advanced to the Round of 12 gives the organization at least a fighting chance.

Against Long Odds, Alex Bowman Rose To The Occasion

C

oming into Sunday’s race at the ROVAL, Alex Bowman had the proverbial deck stacked against him. On the outside of the top 12 looking in, the Hendrick Motorsports driver needed to either win the race or gain at least one position in the standings to move on to the next round of the playoffs. Matters were further complicated for Bowman by the fact that he didn’t feel well all weekend, had to start the race in a backup car and was involved in a Lap One accident. On the brighter side, at least Bowman was able to get most of his bad karma out of the way early. Battling back from his Lap One spin, the Tucson, Arizona, native finished second and in so doing collected enough points to punch a ticket into the Round of 12. Dehydrated and appearing physically exhausted after the race, Bowman couldn’t have worked any harder to keep his championship hopes alive.

It Was Close But No Cigar For Ryan Newman

E

ntering Sunday’s elimination race at the ROVAL, Ryan Newman was well-positioned to advance to the Round of 12. Ninth in the standings with some breathing room between him and the cutoff driver in 13th-place, Newman needed just a decent afternoon to keep his championship hopes alive. Instead, the Roush Fenway Racing driver had a terrible afternoon, finishing 32nd in the 40-car field. As a result, he found himself on the wrong side of the cutline — albeit barely — at day’s end. Needless to say, the veteran driver was not pleased with his outcome. “I felt like I made a lot of mistakes trying too hard,” Newman said. “We did not have the race car, and that’s what I had to do. I’m proud of everybody at Roush Fenway for the fight and the opportunity that they’ve given me. We’re not done; we’re just out (of the playoffs) at this point.”

Chase Elliott Messed Up, Owned It & Overcame it

L

eading at the ROVAL on a lap 66 restart, Chase Elliott dove into Turn 1 — nicknamed the “TUMS Heartburn Turn” — locked his brakes and slid into a tire barrier. “At the time I thought we were done, for sure,” Elliott said. “Just a really stupid mistake. If ever there is a book about things not to do, that should be No. 1. I just didn’t compensate enough for the faster pace. It’s nobody’s fault but mine.” However, one pit stop for repairs and an apology to his Hendrick Motorsports team were all it took for Elliott to regain his speed and focus. The second-generation driver eventually worked his way back to the front and won for the third time in 2019. With the victory, Elliott secured an automatic berth in the Round of 12 and sent a loud message that he can’t be overlooked or forgotten as a contender for the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship.

Caution Calls, Bubba’s Bowman Beef, and More Roval Reactions YouTuber Rusty Walrus is back with his reaction video to the Bank of America Roval 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It’s the third round of playoffs, and a handful of guys went home yesterday with an elimination. What was Rusty’s reaction to this week’s race? The weekend’s action at the Roval might have resembled Rusty’s barn burner Heat 4 streams more than a typical NASCAR race, with bumping, banging, and the shock of a win from 0 1 8

Charlotte Rearview: september 30, 2019

Chase Elliot. However, we almost missed Rusty’s reaction entirely, due to the controversial officiating by NASCAR. Rusty also makes sure his viewers don’t miss a particular point about Kevin Harvick, whose battles with Martin Truex, Jr. during the race were slightly undercut by the inconsistent yellow flag cautions thrown. All of that and more in this week’s episode of the Rusty Report.

Just Sayin’ Bubba Wallace Jr. splashed a water bottle in Alex Bowman’s face following the Charlotte race.

Making a Splash: Wallace unsportsmanlike in confrontation with Bowman By Jared Turner

A

lex Bowman and Bubba Wallace spent much of Sunday’s race on the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL mad at each other after making contact on the opening lap. The two tangled again on lap 42, with Bowman admittedly knocking Wallace out of the way. In all fairness, though, Bowman had a pretty good reason. “I don’t know if he was mad about the first lap, or what, but obviously that was just a mistake,” the Hendrick Motorsports driver said. “And then I got flipped off every single straightaway on the entire racetrack for three laps. … I’m just over it.” And, then Bowman added this little nugget: “I’ve got to stand up for myself at some point, right?” the driver of the No. 88 Chevy said. “He probably wouldn’t have got wrecked if he had his finger back in the car.” But the tensions between Bowman and Wallace didn’t end on the racetrack. They — quite literally — spilled over to pit road, where Wallace confronted Bowman after the race and threw water, from a bottle, in Bowman’s face.

0 2 0

Charlotte Rearview: september 30, 2019

I don’t know if Wallace had drank from the bottle or not prior to the toss, but here’s the thing: Regardless of how angry Wallace might have been in that moment, this is simply crossing the line. Not only does it risk the possible spread of germs, but to make matters worse, Bowman had been sick for several days and was sitting on the ground beside his car, dehydrated and being tended to by a doctor, when Wallace walked over and said something that Bowman later refused to repeat on camera. Then came the water bottle. Does this warrant a penalty for Wallace? Maybe not. But at the very least, it warrants an apology and a stern lecture from the powers that be in NASCAR. This crossed a line, and, if they’re totally honest, everyone — including Bubba Wallace — knows it.

Charlotte brings Redemption Day for Hendrick Motorsports We’re back with YouTuber Danny B Talks for another episode of his NASCAR news roundup show, Danny B Needs a Minute. This time he’s looking at Chase Elliot’s win this weekend as NASCAR returned to the Roval. First up though, Danny takes a look at what happened to Michael McDowell, who missed practices this weekend due to abdominal pains. Turns out it was only a kidney stone, but the illness did present an opportunity for his team mate Austin Cindric to get his time practicing in 0 2 2

the No. 34. During the weekend, the Xfinity series also ran at the Roval, and former cups series driver AJ Allmendinger took home the win in his No. 10, the second win for his team this season. Only this time, he was not disqualified, and his win will stay on the books. There’s much more, as Danny gives us his take on the Cup Series race at Charlotte, Bowman’s disastrous practices, and more on this week’s episode of Danny B Needs a Minute!

PEAK Series Whips Around the Roval Heartbreak and Miracles in the Elimination Round By: M atteo M archeschi

O

n Tuesday, September 24th, the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series headed to the Charlotte Roval, their penultimate race of the 2019 campaign. Entering the event, eight drivers were still in the championship hunt, but only four would leave with a shot to win it all at Homestead. Among those who needed a miracle to make the final four was Joe Gibbs Racing driver and road course ace Bobby Zalenski. Sitting eighth in the standings, he’d need a win to transfer to Homestead with a shot to win the title.

0 3 2

Zalenski started on pole and led all 65 laps, helped by the lack of cautions, since there are only local yellow flags on road courses. As Zalenski ran away with the victory, Garrett Lowe and Blake Reynolds, who entered the race tied for the final spot in, realized they were in trouble. The two, of course, found each other on track and engaged in a spirited, toothand-nail battle which saw Lowe just about spin as he dove to the inside of Reynolds entering turn 1. A mistake by Reynolds on the backstretch chicane, though, brought Lowe right

Charlotte Rearview: september 30, 2019

back into the action. The two traded paint on both chicanes the next time around, and, after coming together on the frontstretch chicane, Lowe missed the turn entirely, and was forced to give up the time he gained. Not only did he lose the position to Reynolds, he fell behind several other cars as well. The incident would end Lowe’s chance to make the final four, as Zalenski’s win knocked him out. With his win, Zalenski secured a spot in the final four, as well as Keegan Leahy, who took it home quietly in fifth, Zack Novak with a passable 15th, and Reynolds, who bested Lowe’s 11th place finish with a ninth. Those four will duke it out on Thursday, October 10th, on NBCSN, the first ever televised points race for the series. The finale will be at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, mimicking the top three NASCAR national series. It is sure to be an intense one, with the favorite likely to be Leahy, with Novak not too far off, and the winless Reynolds and road course ringer Zalenski ready to upset them.

Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven

0 5 4

Charlotte Rearview: september 30, 2019

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and

health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate

Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

0 5 6

Charlotte Rearview: september 30, 2019

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
