Jimmie Johnson’s Best Shot
I
n danger of going winless for the second year in a row after winning a race in each of his first 16 seasons in NASCAR’s premier series, Jimmie Johnson has perhaps one really good remaining opportunity to go to Victory Lane in 2019. That opportunity is on Sunday at Dover, a track where he is the all-time series wins leader with 11 career victories. In fact, Johnson’s most recent win — on June 4, 2017 — came at the Monster Mile. Regardless of what kind of year Johnson might be having, the seven-time champion understandably brings a certain level of confidence to Dover that he doesn’t necessarily bring anywhere else. That confidence is heightened this weekend by what Johnson considers to be a recent uptick in performance by Hendrick Motorsports as a whole. “We’re getting better,” he said. “If we keep working together and understanding what’s making the cars go, then we’re going to have all four (Hendrick) cars where they need to be soon.”

A Relatively Clean Slate For The Title Contenders
T
he start of a new playoff round means a reset of the playoff standings and a relatively clean slate for the 12 drivers who remain in contention for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series title. While some drivers carry more playoff points into this round than others, the gap between first-place Kyle Busch and 12th-place Clint Bowyer is just 46 points — which can be made up over the course of three races. Of course, more important than the gap from first to 12th is the gap from 12th to eighth — which stands at just six points — since eighth place is the cutoff for advancing to the Round of 8. How good does it feel for a driver like Bowyer, who barely squeaked his way into this round, to know that he is suddenly within striking distance? “I’m excited to reset and not be playing catch-up,” Bowyer said. “I won’t put ourselves in a hole again.”

A “Monstrously” Difficult Track To Navigate
D
over International Speedway is nicknamed the “Monster Mile” for a reason. Universally regarded as one of the toughest and most challenging tracks on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series tour, the Delaware oval features steep 24-degree banks, lightning fast speeds and a concrete racing surface that stretches exactly one mile. The combination of those elements make Dover the kind of place that can swallow up drivers in short order. Make the slightest mistake here, and you’re probably going to hit the wall at a very high rate of speed, which will in all likelihood mean major damage, a poor finish and a big hit in the standings. One of the keys to being successful at Dover is simply being patient and staying out of trouble. Another key is having a car that turns well in the center of the corner. A poor-handling vehicle almost always equates to a long day at the Monster Mile, where it’s quite easy to fall multiple laps down.

A Chase Elliott Who Is Growing In Confidence

ne driver who certainly has no reason to be lacking in confidence this weekend is Chase Elliott. In addition to coming into Dover riding high on the heels of an impressive victory on Sunday at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL, Elliott is the defending winner of Sunday’s race at Dover, where he went to Victory Lane last fall in his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Rest assured Elliott hasn’t forgotten about his victory from one year ago nor is it lost on him that he pretty much had his way with the competition in last weekend’s elimination race. “I think we’re a stronger team now than we’ve ever been,” Elliott said after his victory at the ROVAL. “I honestly feel like we’re really close to being able to assert ourselves amongst those top teams. I feel like we have that in us. I don’t say that because we won today; I say that because I believe it.”

hile Chase Elliott might have ended the Round of 16 in Victory Lane, Martin Truex Jr. was hands-down the class of the field when looking at the round in its totality. A winner of both the playoff opener at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the following weekend’s event at Richmond Raceway, Truex wasted no time flexing his proverbial muscle and asserting himself as the clear favorite to claim the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship. Will Truex return to his familiar frontrunning ways on Sunday at Dover after a so-so outing in last weekend’s elimination race on the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL, or will another driver challenge Truex’s “frontrunner” status? This much is certain: Based on what happened in the Round of 16, Truex looks like a fairly safe bet to be one of the four drivers who get the opportunity to compete straight up for the title in the season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Jimmie johnson. It used to be that Jimmie Johnson was a contender to win virtually anywhere. No so anymore. One track, however, where the seven-time champion still cannot be overlooked is Dover, where his 11 premier series wins are an all-time record. Johnson might not be the favorite to win at Dover anymore, but he’s certainly one of the favorites. ▶▶ Kevin Harvick. It took Kevin Harvick a long time to score his first win at Dover, but once he did, he’s never looked back. Both of Harvick’s victories at the high-banked Delaware oval have come since 2015 and both have coming since he joined Stewart-Haas Racing the year prior. If Harvick doesn’t win on Sunday, it probably won’t be due to lack of speed. ▶▶ Martin Truex jr. No driver poses a bigger threat to their competition at Dover than Martin Truex Jr., who owns three wins at the track and picked up his most recent victory here when the Monster Energy Series convened at Dover earlier this year. Truex opened the playoffs in grandiose fashion by winning the first two playoff races and has carried more raw speed than anyone in recent times. ▶▶ chase elliott. Chase Elliott won last weekend on the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL and is the defending winner of the fall Dover race. Those two factoids alone make the Hendrick Motorsports driver worth keeping a close eye on come Sunday afternoon. ▶▶ Kyle Busch. It’s been 15 races since Kyle Busch last won a Monster Energy Series race. Just let that sink in for a minute. Rest assured, however, that the 2015 Monster Energy Series champ is none too pleased about his current drought and will stop at nothing to see that it ends at Dover — a track where he’s a three-time winner.

Determined to Win Martin Holds Off Teammates at Kansas Speedway By Ben white

n Oct. 9, 2005, Mark Martin, driver of the No. 6 Roush Racing Ford, won the Banquet 400 at the Kansas Speedway and led four Roush Racing teammates into the top five. He was 0.557 seconds ahead of teammate Greg Biffle for his first victory of the season and 35th of his Nextel Cup career. Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart of Joe Gibbs Racing and polewinner Matt Kenseth completed the top five. Martin led a total of 139 of the race’s 267-lap distance. He gained the point on lap 122 and held off all challengers for 58 laps. He took the lead again from laps 185 to 217 as well as the final 48 laps over Kevin Harvick in a race that featured

seven cautions. Biffle made a strong attempt for the lead in the closing laps, but Martin sealed the deal with a fourtire stop during the final caution on lap 225. “I don’t want to lose,” Martin said in post-race interviews. “I always tell these guys to give me the lead with four fresh tires with the end in sight and you’ll never get a fight like you’re gonna get from me,” Martin said. “…When Greg started coming I stepped it up. I could have driven maybe a little bit harder, but I might have wrecked. That’s as fast as I could go and keep him behind me.”

Austin Cindric
Cindric made his NASCAR debut when he was 16, competing in a pair of NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series races for Brad Keselowski Racing. In 2017, he ran the full Truck Series schedule for BKR, winning one race and finishing third in the championship standings. Cindric moved to the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2018 and became Team Penske’s fulltime driver this year. Away from the track, Cindric enjoys mountain biking, water sports and listening to music.

ike so many others involved in the NASCAR industry, Austin Cindric literally grew up in the sport. The 21-year-old driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford in the NASCAR Xfinity Series is the son of Tim Cindric, longtime president of Team Penske, and the grandson of the late Jim Trueman, who founded the Red Roof Inns motel chain and owned the car Bobby Rahal drove to victory in the 1986 Indianapolis 500. Born Sept. 2, 1998, in Columbus, Ohio, Cindric was raised in Mooresville, North Carolina, and started his career racing Bandoleros and Legend Cars before turning his focus to road racing. As a teenager, Cindric built a diverse résumé by competing in series such as the U.S. F2000 National Championship, the IMSAC Continental SportsCar Championship and the Global RallyCross series. In 2015, he became the youngest driver to race in Australia’s Bathurst 12 Hour, one of the world’s premier endurance events.

crew member profile: Steve Channing of landing a job in the sport. Like so many before him, it was a matter of knocking on doors, passing out resumes and selling himself as an asset to the teams. “I raced while growing up in Pro Stocks and Late Models,” Channing said. “I had some friends that had moved down so in 2000, I packed up the family to see if I could make it.” Channing’s first job in the sport came in 2001 with Midwest Transit Racing with driver Ricky Craven. Over the years, he also worked with Roush-Fenway Racing, Bill Davis Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports, Michael Waltrip Motorsports before joining Team Penske in 2017.

He is responsible for making sure all of the components on the rear of Keselowski’s Ford Mustangs are tight and working properly. Doing so could be the difference between going to victory lane or the garage. “I’m basically responsible for anything to do with the rear suspension,” Channing said. “While we’re at the track, I’m changing parts and pieces which consists of the axles, the brakes, brake rotors and the brake pads. We work at the shop two days a week. After usually being off on Mondays, we will go in on Tuesday and work on the primary car for the upcoming race weekend. We do a lot of safety checks on the car and then get ready for the race.”

Coming into the season, I only had two or three scheduled. All in all, I’ve been happy with our performance at JDM. As of late, I’ve been pleased with the cars we take to the track.” ▶▶ What can you do better as a driver? “We have to focus on the sponsorship side and make sure we’re prepared. NASCAR and ARCA Announce 2020 Format ARCA Menards Series To Encompass Four Championship Series NASCAR Release

ASCAR and ARCA announced a new championship format for 2020 that will see the continuation of three historic regional championship series and the coronation of a new fourth champion, all under the ARCA Menards Series banner. The series provide an integral development step for young drivers who aspire to move up to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series or NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series; as well as a highly-competitive professional level for shorttrack veterans. They will also provide continuity to three of the longest running high-level regional stock car series in the United States.

The four championships will be: ▶▶ ARCA Menards Series East and ARCA Menards Series West will continue the traditions established by the Busch North Series (founded in 1987) and Pacific Coast Late Model Series/Winston West (1954) and currently competing as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West. The series will feature an annual schedule of six to eight races and crowning of separate regional champions. ▶▶ ARCA Menards Series The 20-race ARCA Menards Series, founded in 1953, a mix of national-series combination events at venues such as Daytona International Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway, as well as short tracks like Madison International Speedway in Wisconsin and the Illinois and DuQuoin State Fairgrounds mile dirt tracks. ▶▶ ARCA Racing Series Showdown Ten races within the larger ARCA Menards Series championship will feature the best of the three series coming together to crown a Showdown champion.

NASCAR also announced if an East, West or current ARCA Menards Series car owner has a car that meets the 2019 rulebook, there will be a rules package that will allow them to compete in 2020. This important partnership, together with events covered by FOX Sports, ensures that all 20 ARCA Menards Series races will be available live to race fans, including the 10-race Showdown. NBCSN will continue to carry the ARCA Menards Series East and West as part of their extensive NASCAR coverage.

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate

The HANS device protects the neck from fractures.
