Johnson and Bowyer Could Lose it All in a Flash In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp tells us all about the storm brewing around the playoff bubble, and he helpfully does it in the middle of a literal storm brewing around him! First up he has more coverage of the newest throwback paint scheme reveals for Darlington this weekend. The last few days we’ve seen some quite interesting takes, with a handful of drivers even throwing back to their own cars! 0 0 4

But the real rumble can be felt in the battle for playoff points, as veterans Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer are both in serious danger of being left out of the playoffs. Bowyer has a close battle ahead for 16th, while the iconic Johnson has critical ground to make up in the closing weeks. Don’t forget to check out the contest in the description, powered by Joe’s Hand Cleaner and NASCAR Pole Position. What can you win? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

wenty-four races down. Two races to go. Time is running out on drivers looking to make a last-minute leap into the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Will someone come out of the blue and do something special on this annual “throwback” weekend at Darlington Raceway? Following are five things to watch for in Sunday night’s Bojangles’ Southern 500. A Super Fired Up Matt DiBenedetto
N
o driver has more incentive or reason to go out and make something happen right now than Matt DiBenedetto, who recently learned that he would not be retained by Leavine Family Racing for the 2020 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season — this despite delivering consistently strong results in equipment that isn’t in the same league as much of his competition’s. DiBenedetto’s most impressive performance yet came two weekends ago at Bristol Motor Speedway, where he led late in the race and appeared to have a shot at his first career Monster Energy Series victory before being passed for the lead by Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin with just under 10 laps to go. DiBenedetto wants desperately to shore up his future by turning the head of a top team owner and ultimately being offered a ride with a top team — or any team. DiBenedetto will continue his quest this weekend at the track “Too Tough to Tame.”

An Intense Battle At The Bubble
D
aniel Suarez is clinging to the final playoff transfer spot by just two points. The driver nipping closely at his heels? None other than Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Clint Bowyer. Barring a win in the final two races of the regular season by someone outside the top 17 in points, it’s likely going to be a battle between Suarez and Bowyer for the final playoff berth. While Bowyer certainly has more experience in these kind of high-pressure situations, Suarez has been the stronger of the two drivers in recent weeks. Unless Bowyer can turn the tide and regain some momentum at Darlington, Suarez would appear to have the advantage, in spite of his relative youth and inexperience. The driver most likely to come out on top is the one whose team executes most effectively and the one who can do the best job of avoiding mistakes in these final two races of the regular season.

A Hail Mary Attempt Or Two
O
f the drivers outside the top 16 in the standings, only one — Clint Bowyer — stands a relatively decent shot of making up their deficit and reaching the playoffs on the basis of points. Anyone else outside the top 16, including 18th-place Jimmie Johnson, is likely going to need a win to get in. Based on how they’ve performed over the season’s first 24 races, it’s doubtful that anyone not currently in position to make the playoffs has the horses to pull a proverbial rabbit out of the hat by winning one of the final two regular season events. That doesn’t mean they’re not going to go for broke trying, however. As the race at Darlingon wears on and strategies begin to play out, no one will be surprised if Johnson and his team or another driver and team outside the top 17 attempt the proverbial Hail Mary in desperate pursuit of a playoff-clinching win.

A Track That Is Still “Too Tough to Tame”
L
ong known as The Track “Too Tough to Tame,” Darlington Raceway has rightfully earned the reputation as one of the hardest tracks — if not the hardest track — on the NASCAR schedule. Expect this weekend’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 to be no different. Unlike most tracks, where drivers first and foremost race each other, Darlington requires a different mindset — a mindset that you’re racing the track first and fellow competitors second. Darlington’s unusual egg-shaped layout and the fact that the fastest way around the 1.366-mile venue is always the outside groove that runs right up against the wall make “The Lady in Black”— another commonly used moniker for the South Carolina facility — notoriously hard to navigate. Because most drivers run right up against the outside wall in an attempt to maximize their speed, the slightest slipup can send someone into the wall and leave their car sporting one or more of those infamous “Darlington stripes.”

A Throwback Kind Of Atmosphere
I
n keeping with recent tradition, Darlington Raceway will be hosting “The Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR” as part of its annual Labor Day weekend festivities. This year’s “throwback” theme will highlight the years 1990-1994 in NASCAR, so look for drivers’ paint schemes, fire suits and hair styles to be an ode to this memorable era. Of course, not all of the throwback digs will pay homage to this five-year window. Joey Logano, for example, is campaigning a Shell/Pennzoil paint scheme patterned after the one Kevin Harvick drove to victory in the 2007 Daytona 500. Coincidentally, this was the same paint scheme Harvick was campaigning in 2010 when Logano made his now-memorable jab that Harvick’s wife, DeLana, was the one who “wore the firesuit in the family.” In a teaser video for this weekend, Logano’s wife, Brittany, is wearing a firesuit and telling her husband that it’s his turn to change the diaper of their toddler son. Funny stuff.

drivers to watch at darlington
By Jared Turner ▶▶ Brad keselowski. Brad Keselowski is the defending race winner of the Bojangles’ Southern 500 but hasn’t been to Victory Lane since mid-May at Kansas Speedway. It was at this time last year that the Team Penske driver really caught fire, picking up consecutive wins at Darlington, Indianapolis and Las Vegas. Will lightning strike twice? ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie Johnson is a three-time winner at Darlington. That’s the good news for fans of the seven-time champ. The bad news is that he hasn’t won at the track “Too Tough to Tame” since 2012 and he hasn’t won anywhere since early summer in 2017. Johnson is now in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in his career and will likely do so without a victory this weekend at Darlington or next weekend at Indianapolis. ▶▶ Daniel Suarez. Daniel Suarez holds a two-point lead over teammate Clint Bowyer for the final playoff berth, but that’s hardly enough of a cushion for comfort — especially considering that Suarez has finishes of 38th and 29th, respectively, in his two starts at Darlington since joining the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. ▶▶ Clint Bowyer. It’s been a frustrating few weeks for Clint Bowyer, who as recently as six weeks ago looked like a virtual lock for the playoffs but now trails Daniel Suarez by two points for the final playoff berth. Bowyer, who faces an uncertain future at Stewart-Haas Racing, needs to do something over the next two races to send a clear message that he’s deserving of another opportunity with the team. ▶▶ Denny hamlin. No driver has been stronger in the second half of the season than Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin, who looks to continue his surge at Darlington — a place where he’s a two-time Monster Energy Series winner. Hamlin won the pole for last year’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 and earned his most recent Darlington win in 2017.

O
n Nov. 20, 1988, Bill Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Melling Racing Ford, collected his lone Winston Cup Series championship at Atlanta International Raceway by following a conservative plan during NASCAR’s final event of the season. Rusty Wallace drove his Raymond Beadle-owned Blue Max Racing Pontiac in the lead for 166 of the race’s 312 laps. He enjoyed his sixth win of 1988 but still finished second in points behind Elliott. The Dawsonville, Ga., native won six races and finished in the top five in 15 of 29 events. Elliott started the final race in the 29th position and took a noticeably careful approach while needing to

finish 18th or better. He sealed the deal by finishing 11th in the finishing order and secured the championship he had fought hard for all season by only four points. “The deal for us was to make sure everything was right on the car and it was going to be OK,” Elliott said in post-race interviews as chronicled in the “40 Years of Stock car Racing” book series. “Rusty did what he had to do and I did what I had to do. You can put aside all the ifs, ands or buts. I stuck it out and won the Winston Cup championship.” Elliott collected 44 career Cup series victories before his retirement from NASCAR’s premier division in 2012.

till eight months shy of his 30th birthday, Austin Dillon has already won two of the three crown jewel races on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule. The third-generation NASCAR racer from Welcome, North Carolina, won the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2017 and the topped the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway in 2018. Born April 27, 1990, Dillion is the son of former NASCAR driver and team executive Mike Dillon and the grandson of 2017 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Richard Childress, who claimed six Cup Series championships as the owner of Richard Childress Racing. Austin Dillon began racing Bandoleros and Legend Cars in 2005 and quickly graduated to wheeling Late Models and Modifieds on dirt track across the Southeast. He eventually turned his focus to asphalt racing, competing in a variety of stock car divisions. He captured the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series

everything he needs inside his LFR Toyotas to get the job done. “My focus as interior specialist is the inside of the cars,” Mares said. “I handle all of Matt’s safety equipment such as his helmet, his HANS device, his shoes, his gloves and radio equipment. I also take care of any hose ducting and the seat and seat belts.” “We try to make all the cars the same inside so they are laid out the same. he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

yler Dippel is one of NASCAR’s top young guns. The Young’s Motorsports driver is hitting his stride with the No. 02 team, finishing a career-best third at Michigan. Now, he wants people to know who he is.
▶▶ What is it like to be racing full-time in the Truck Series? “It’s been a cool experience, getting to race these big tracks and going to new places. It’s been a good learning year. There are different ways to race. The air has been really big. It’s been really cool to work with the Youngs.” ▶▶ What are your expectations for the rest of the season? “I’d like to win, obviously. I feel like if we hit it right, we can do it. To finish in the top 10 every week is a realistic goal for the rest of the season.” 0 3 6

The calendar has turned to fall and that means the weather is finally cooling down. However, even as the temperatures chill, a handful of NASCAR-related storylines are sizzling. These are five hot topics that everyone will be discussing during the final months of the year.
1
No Foreseeable End to Joe Gibbs Racing’s Dominance: JGR driver Denny Hamlin kicked off the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season with a huge and emotional victory in the Daytona 500. Twentyfour races into the schedule, JGR drivers had accounted for exactly half of all Monster Energy Series race wins. Arguably just as impressive was the fact that those victories were evenly distributed among three of JGR’s four drivers – Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Hamlin.

A 2020 Jimmie Johnson Farewell Tour? Jimmie Johnson is in a threeyear contract with Hendrick Motorsports that runs through the 2020 season. Will the seventime NASCAR premier series champion renew for one or more additional seasons, or will 2020 be his farewell tour? As of late August, Johnson had offered no indication of his plans. Forty-four years old as of Sept. 17, Johnson is the oldest active full-time Monster Energy Series driver.

The Continued Emergence of the Young Guns: The season hasn’t been the greatest for NASCAR’s so-called “young guns,” but it hasn’t been bad either. Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Alex Bowman, Erik Jones, William Byron, Daniel Suarez and Matt DiBenedetto – all drivers central to NASCAR’s youth movement – have all enjoyed some terrific moments. Bowman, Byron, Suarez and DiBenedetto, in particular, have displayed marked improvement over 2018 when it was rare for any of them to contend for wins.
5
Possible Retirement for Kurt Busch: Leading up to this season, Kurt Busch signed only a one-year agreement with Chip Ganassi Racing and made no attempt to hide the possibility that he might not race beyond 2019. But after a playoff-clinching victory in July at Kentucky Speedway where he edged younger brother Kyle in an epic lastlap duel, Busch acknowledged that his overall successful season to date had led him to seriously contemplate the possibility of racing at least one more year although a deal was far from done.
A Majorly Revamped 2020 Schedule: It’s certainly not too early to look ahead to the 2020 schedule, which will look vastly different than this season. Among the most notable changes for NASCAR’s premier series will be Homestead-Miami Speedway moving from the season’s final race to Race Six while Atlanta Motor Speedway moves from Week Two to Week Five. Martinsville Speedway is taking over the Mother’s Day weekend date previously occupied by Kansas Speedway, while the first Kansas race has been pushed back to the last weekend in May. Rather than making two trips to Pocono Raceway, NASCAR’s premier series will visit the “Tricky Triangle” only once – in late June – and run two races on back-to-back days.

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.
Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. Magic Clear Lens is a cleaning, preservation, and maintenance treatment that instantly reveals a bright and clear headlight. Not only will your headlights look exceptionally better, but nighttime driving will be safer.

TM
msg: making racing safer By dan g u ttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down
0 5 4
Darlington PReview: august 30, 2019
because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People
health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.
“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”
An MSG Partner – Brain Armor Motorsports Safety Group is planning to partner with The Healthy Brain Co. on a mission to positively impact the health and wellness of the brain – 86 billion neurons at a time. researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”
