But of course the main focus of the show is on the Great American Race itself. Eric takes us from the pole position all the way through the field with his take on how this weekend will look from the stands. Who’s got what it takes to make it through this year? A First-Time Daytona 500 Winner
W
inning the Daytona 500 isn’t easy. Just ask the drivers who’ve never done it. Among the elite names still in pursuit of their first Harley J. Earl Trophy are reigning and two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, 2017 champion Martin Truex Jr., 2012 champion Brad Keselowski and NASCAR’s most popular driver, Chase Elliott. Busch, whose struggles to capture The Great American Race have been well-documented, makes no bones about just how much he covets a Daytona 500 breakthrough. “I’ve been close a couple of times and have had some solid finishes, but all the rest of the years have been mounds of frustration,” he said. “The Daytona 500 has been challenging, to say the least. Certainly would love to get the opportunity to win the Daytona 500. It’s the last big trophy that I’m looking to put in my trophy case. To be able to have every trophy I wanted to get would mean the world to me.”

A Wreckfest
E
veryone knows that Daytona International Speedway — like sister track Talladega Superspeedway — is prone to produce big and sometimes downright frightening multi-car wrecks that are little more than a product of the close-quarters, no-holds-barred style of racing that inevitably rears its head every time NASCAR visits the fast, high-banked 2.5-mile facility. Everyone was reminded of just how wild and crazy the racing at Daytona can be with this past weekend’s Busch Clash, an 88-lap exhibition that bore a greater resemblance to a demolition derby than a NASCAR Cup Series race featuring 18 of the world’s greatest drivers. Of those 18 drivers who started the Clash, only five finished on the lead lap, while 12 were officially eliminated in crashes — of which there were four, all involving multiple cars. Will we see another wreckfest in the Daytona 500? It’s highly likely if there’s a continuation of the blocking and overall aggression that marred the Busch Clash.

A Cinderella Story
S
peedweeks 2020 has already generated its share of surprises, the most notable being Ricky Stenhouse Jr. winning the pole for the Daytona 500 in his first ride as a driver for JTG Daugherty Racing and Erik Jones winning the Busch Clash in a badly damaged car that looked as if it had just been through a meat grinder. Will Sunday’s main event produce another Cinderella story, in the form of a winner no one is expecting? “It’s a race that 40 people have a chance to go out there and win,” Joe Gibbs Racing driver and reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch said. “I wouldn’t say the same for a race like Vegas the next week. You go to Vegas and obviously that’s a race where probably 10, 12 guys are going to have a chance to win, but when you show up to Daytona, all 40 people will believe they have a chance to win.”

Some Scores To Settle
W
ith so many drivers wrecking out of last weekend’s Busch Clash, it’s not surprising that some of those drivers were less than happy with each other. Arguably the most outwardly frustrated of the bunch was Brad Keselowski, who was eliminated in a crash on lap 67. “I just got wrecked for no reason,” Keselowski said. “Dumb, dumb racing. Dumb moves being thrown out there. Guys that don’t know what they are doing so they throw crazy blocks. It is just ridiculous.” Keselowski took particular umbrage with Team Penske teammate Joey Logano. “You would think these guys would be smarter than that,” Keselowski said. “I get in wrecks all the time and I cause them, but the same one over and over again? It is the same thing. Somebody throws a stupid block that is never going to work and wrecks half the field.” Will Keselowski and others perhaps be looking to settle a score in the Daytona 500? Stay tuned.

Hamlin’s Pursuit of Rare Air
T
o find the driver who most recently scored back-to-back Daytona 500 victories, one must go all the way back to the 1994 and 1995 seasons with Sterling Marlin. Now a quarter of a century later, Denny Hamlin will look to join Marlin and the two others — NASCAR Hall of Famers Richard Petty (1973-74) and Cale Yarborough (1983-84) — who have managed to pull off the rare Daytona 500 repeat. While such a feat won’t be easy for Hamlin to accomplish, it is within the realm of possibility. After all, Hamlin enters the 2020 season as one of the favorites to win the championship and he already owns a pair of Daytona 500 wins, the first one coming in 2016. With a little or perhaps a whole lot of luck, Hamlin will enter rarefied air on Sunday afternoon as just the fourth back-to-back winner in what will be the 62-year history of NASCAR’s Super Bowl.

or most NASCAR drivers, there’s nothing quite like racing at their home track. Winning at their home track? Well, it simply doesn’t get any better. Just ask seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, who on April 28, 2002, at the young age of 26, notched the first of his now 83 career NASCAR Cup Series victories. Fittingly, that win came at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California — the two-mile Southern California track less than two hours from Johnson’s hometown of El Cajon. As Johnson reflects on his amazing career almost 18 years later, the Hendrick Motorsports driver views his maiden win as the one that he cherishes the most. “For me, I go to the first,” said Johnson, whose impressive resume now includes multiple victories in the Daytona 500, the Coca-Cola 600, the Brickyard 400 and the Bojangles’ Southern 500. “My dream was to be a Cup driver and to win a race. So that first

win was the top for me. To be able to do that in my 13th start and at my home track, that was a very special moment.” Johnson, who will retire from full-time competition at season’s end, has since collected five more wins at Fontana. However, no win will ever compare to the first, which came on a day when Johnson led 62 of 250 laps and took the checkered flag .620 seconds ahead of runner-up Kurt Busch. Today, Johnson owns more top-five finishes (13) and more top-10 finishes (17) than any other driver at Fontana. “I think it’s a bit of luck in the sense that there are some tracks that just fit drivers and teams and crew chiefs, and that racetrack has been one for me,” Johnson said. “Thankfully, it is my home track, and I have been able to enjoy the extreme highs that come with that.”

▶▶ How important is it to connect with fans on social media? “You kind of hear those horror stories of guys getting ridiculed on social media or whatever. Truthfully, I would say 99.9 percent of mine is all good. I don’t know if I just don’t have haters, or I haven’t made anybody mad, or what, but mine’s really encouraging. I’ve never really got on there and been like, ‘Man, guys are just mean on here.” “Reddit’s been awesome. I lurked on there for probably a year, and would always get on there and read stuff, but never post it. And a little over a year ago, I decided to start posting on there and it’s been great. “It’s amazing how many people, really every weekend, come up to me and talk about Reddit, it’s easily eight to 10 people a weekend I get to meet because of it. So, it’s pretty cool that because of Reddit I’ve met so many cool people. ▶▶ For your dream team, which drivers would you recruit for pranks, a solid teammate, and an outgoing racer? “Yeah, I would say I would do Tony Stewart for the prank. Um, I’d do Kyle Larson to be my teammate. And I would say I’d have Jeff Gordon probably be my retiree.” ▶▶ What song, if you had a 10-second lead, would you play as you’re closing in on a win? “I’d have to go with ‘I’ve Got a Feeling’ by Black Eyed Peas. That’d probably be the one if I’m in the lead by that much.” 0 2 2

Lackey Enjoys His Role with Team Penske
by Ben white
A
ndrew Lackey, fuel man for Team Penske and driver Brad Keselowski, was introduced to NASCAR as a child. For 10 months each year, Sunday afternoons cheering on their favorites was a ritual at the Lackey home. “My whole family watched races,” Lackey said. “I didn’t see my first actual race until October of 2000 when we came to Charlotte Motor Speedway to what was then a Busch Series race. I remember Matt Kenseth won his first of many races at Charlotte.” Lackey was an intern at Davidson (N.C.) College when an unexpected opportunity came that proved to be a dream come true. His athletic background and 6-foot-5 stature provided the perfect prerequisite for handling 90-pound fuel cans. “I decided to transfer to UNC Charlotte and graduated from there in 2014,” Lackey said. “Penske was looking to bring in some former college football players, and he asked if I would like to come for a tryout. I’m now in my eighth year with Penske and haven’t worked for any other team.” Fueling race cars and maintaining the equipment has been his calling from the day he came into NASCAR. “The first day I walked in to work for Penske they gave me a gas can, and I’ve been a gas man ever since,” Lackey said. “I love the actual pit stop. It’s a real adrenaline rush. When you see the front end of the car coming at you, you’re just focused on the job at that point. The nerves come with some of the bigger races and with stops where its fuel only at the end of races. But once the race starts, that’s all gone.”

Long associated with Junior Johnson’s team, Cale Yarborough won 55 races and three championships in Johnson’s No. 11 while Darrell Waltrip added 43 victories and three titles as Yarborough’s replacement. As Brandon Jones enters his fifth full-time season in the XFINITY Series and third with Joe Gibbs Racing, he is now the leader within the JGR camp. The Georgia native earned his first win last year, and he believes he can compete for the title in 2020.
▶▶ Is 2020 the opportunity you’ve been looking for to compete for a championship? “I’ve already talked to multiple people at Joe Gibbs Racing, and we discussed goals for next year. That’s one of them. We have the team to do it. I’ve been in the series long enough. I know what it takes to get a win and what it takes to get to the end of the season. I look at the series and I think we’re going to be fighting for this thing. We’ve proved ourselves and taking away a few of those guys makes us a big force.” ▶▶ How does becoming the elder statesman at Joe Gibbs Racing help you on and off the track? “It will. It’s going to be a different role for me next year. I’m going to be the senior driver of the group. I’m going to help the other two [Harrison Burton and Riley Herbst] get going. That’s going to be somewhat of a role of mine. I want to offer as much as I can to them.”

t’s no secret that NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series team owner Joe Gibbs is a winner with everything he touches. If sports fans may find his name familiar, it’s because of his incredible success in the National Football League before coming to NASCAR. He won Super Bowl championships as head football coach with the Washington Redskins in 1982, 1987 and 1991. Gibbs began his football career as offensive line coach at San Diego State under coach Don Coryell (1964–1966). He also coached at Florida State (1967–1968) before moving to the University of Southern California (1969–1970) and the University of Arkansas (1971–1972). Gibbs then advanced to the National Football League after being hired as the offensive backfield coach for the St. Louis Cardinals (1973–1977) by Coryell. After a season as offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1978), he joined Coryell again with the San Diego Chargers

NAPA expanded its number of primary races from 24 to 26 in 2018. Axalta, Hendrick Extend Partnership Through 2027 N ascar release
■■ William Byron will drive the #24 Axalta ‘Color of the Year’ Chevrolet at Daytona.
A
xalta, a leading global supplier of liquid and powder coatings, and 12-time NASCAR Cup Series champions Hendrick Motorsports have agreed to a five-year contract extension that will take one of the most enduring sponsorships in auto racing through 2027. As part of the new agreement, Axalta will be a primary sponsor of the No. 24 team with driver William Byron for 14 Cup Series races each year beginning in 2021. Byron is coming off a sophomore season that saw him produce personal bests in nearly every statistical category and earn his first Cup playoff berth. Driving the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, Byron will make his third career start in the DAYTONA 500 on Sunday (2:30 p.m. ET on FOX). His paint scheme will feature Axalta’s 2020 Global Automotive Color of the Year, Axalta Sea Glass. The new pact extends a multi-faceted partnership – now in its 28th full season – that began in November 1992 when Axalta first sponsored the No. 24 Chevrolet of driver Jeff Gordon, who went on to win four Cup Series titles and 93 points-paying races. Axalta also operates a 36,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Customer

Experience Center on the Hendrick Motorsports campus outside Charlotte, North Carolina, to enable customers to train and be part of a full racing experience. “It’s difficult to put into words what Axalta has meant to our company,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “They took a chance on us nearly three decades ago, and it’s been an incredible relationship ever since.”
■■ Byron will look to continue his growth in the Cup Series for 2020 and beyond.
