T
he 62nd annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway featured a little bit of everything: a history-making win, some feelgood stories and, most notably, a bone-chilling last-lap wreck that could have been tragic but thankfully had a much better outcome. While Denny Hamlin left The World Center of Racing happy to have scored his third victory and second consecutive win in The Great American Race, his first and only statement on social media was in support of Newman. Here are five key takeaways from the dramatic opening race of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season. by Jared Turner

Daytona Was a Dream Come True for Underdog Jordan Anderson
O
ne of the most remarkable and inspiring stories of Speedweeks was that of independent NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series driver Jordan Anderson, who finished second to Grant Enfinger in a three-wide, fender-banging conclusion to the opening race of the truck season. On the final lap, it came down to Anderson, Enfinger and Codie Rohrbaugh, with the three drivers crossing the finish line three-wide and Enfinger edging Anderson by only 0.010 seconds. Afterward, Anderson — a 28-year-old Forest Acres, South Carolina native looking to run the full season with sponsorship from K-Seal — might have been the happiest second-place finisher in NASCAR history. “I’m almost speechless for words,” an exuberant Anderson said. “I came here in 2015 and emptied my bank account to try to come down here and run, and to be in the position to even go for a win at Daytona, man … I’m usually not speechless, but God is good. The journey isn’t easy, but it’s worth it.”

The Daytona 500 Has Become Kyle Busch’s Achilles Heel
A
nother Daytona 500, another disappointment for Kyle Busch. Making his 15th start in The Great American Race, the reigning and two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion had one of the fastest cars in the field and led 14 laps before the engine in his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota let go on lap 184. Busch, who has won all of NASCAR’s other “crown-jewel” events besides the 500, admitted after retiring from the race that the feeling of falling short in NASCAR’s biggest event has become all too familiar. “We’ve been in that spot I don’t know how many times, and I guess we will just keep going down in history of finding new ways to lose it,” he said. “I know there is another guy (the late Dale Earnhardt) who has done that before, and he was pretty popular. I don’t know. It sucks to be in that conversation, but we will go on another year.”

It Was a Good Day For The Underdogs
W
ith many of the pre-race favorites for the victory getting caught up in Daytona’s familiar multi-car accidents, including several that occurred in the final laps, a number of drivers who don’t typically finish near the front or contend for wins were able to leave Daytona with notably strong results. Those drivers included third-place Chris Buescher, David Ragan (fourth), Brendan Gaughan (seventh), Corey LaJoie (eight), Justin Haley (13th) and Michael McDowell (14th). Ragan retired from full-time driving at the end of last season but was making what amounted to a cameo outing for Front Row Motorsports. “That was the ugliest fourth place finish I have ever had,” Ragan said. “I wasn’t disciplined enough in my strategy there with about 15 to go. I felt like things were getting a little hairy and we were 16th or 18th and that is no man’s land here at Daytona. … Those last few laps were exciting.”

Ryan Blaney Had No Malintent in Turning Ryan Newman
W
hile some very early attention was on Ryan Blaney for the slight bump that sent Ryan Newman’s car tumbling airborne on the final lap and sent Newman to a local hospital (he suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries), Blaney never intended to wreck Newman. Rather, the Team Penske driver was simply trying to win NASCAR’s biggest race — and if he couldn’t do that, push a fellow Ford driver (Newman) to the victory. Instead, Toyota driver Denny Hamlin nipped Blaney for the win, while Newman was scored with a ninth-place finish. “We pushed Newman there to the lead and then we got a push from the 11 (Hamlin),” Blaney said. “I kind of went low and he blocked that, so I was committed to pushing him to the win and having a Ford win it. I don’t know. We just got the bumpers hooked up wrong and I turned him. I hope he is alright. It looked pretty bad.”

Denny Hamlin Takes the Throne as New King of the Daytona 500
W
ith three victories in the last five Daytona 500s, Denny Hamlin has truly become NASCAR’s resident master of The Great American Race. Hamlin’s win on Monday, which came on the heels of a heart-pounding last-lap battle with Ryan Blaney and Ryan Newman, placed the Joe Gibbs Racing driver in an elite club as he joined Sterling Marlin and legends Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough in becoming just the fourth driver to score back-to-back Daytona 500 victories in the race’s 62-year history. After losing the lead to Newman coming down the backstretch on the final lap, Hamlin battled back in the tri-oval coming to the checkered flag, passing Newman and edging Blaney at the line by .014 seconds. “Things really worked out perfectly there for me at the end,” said Hamlin, who expressed great concern for Newman after the Roush Fenway Racing driver crashed violently with the checkered flag in sight. “I’m very fortunate to be in this place.”

Just Sayin’
President Trump’s Visit a Boost for NASCAR Regardless of one’s political leanings, it was good for NASCAR to have United States President Donald J. Trump and his wife, Melania, on hand for the Daytona 500. Trump — who mingled with drivers, toured the track in the presidential limousine and gave the command to fire the engines — tweeted or retweeted about NASCAR no fewer than 14 times over a period of less than two days. Having any sitting U.S. president give NASCAR that kind of free exposure is a big deal. Jared Turner ▶▶ Don’t Blame Hamlin for Post-Race Celebration Denny Hamlin and his team can’t be faulted for celebrating in the immediate aftermath of their Daytona 500 win — all while Ryan Newman’s mangled race car sat upside down just past the start/finish line with Newman still inside. From the post-race comments of Hamlin, Hamlin spotter Chris Lambert and team owner Joe Gibbs, it was clear that Hamlin and team members weren’t immediately aware of the severity of Newman’s wreck. As soon as Hamlin was made aware — in Victory Lane — he was respectful and appropriately subdued.
■■ President Donald Trump mingles with Clint Bowyer and Aric Almirola on Sunday at Daytona.

▶▶ Kudos to NASCAR for Safety Interventions If there’s one thing just about everyone involved with NASCAR can agree on, it’s that the sport’s decision-makers have done a terrific job over the past two decades of making the racing safer. By all accounts, Ryan Newman’s wreck on the final lap of the Daytona 500 looked worse than Dale Earnhardt’s wreck in this race 19 years earlier. Yet Earnhardt died, while Newman escaped without life-threatening injuries. Newman’s relatively positive outcome is the ultimate testament to just how much progress NASCAR has made with safety.
