NASCAR Tests the “Next Gen” Car for the First Time In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us a deep dive on the reveal of NASCAR’s “Next Gen” car. The topic of endless rumor-mongering, the details of what was previously called the Gen-7 car have now been shown, in part at least, to fans online. Earlier this week at Richmond, Austin Dillon published an Instagram video showing a brief tour of the new NASCAR, with plenty of shots showing off the new components. Some of the components have been seen before in live tests, such as a 0 0 4

version of the air-intake tested at the Charlotte race earlier this summer (Remember the Nostrils?). In the video, Eric takes us through the details shown piece by piece, and offers us the context of what we know about how that package has performed so far, as well as some speculation on how it might perform post-debut in 2021. What’s the most important change in the new package? And what’s behind NASCAR’s Next-Gen talking points? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

elcome to the “Wild Card.” If there’s one race in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs where unknowns are the name of the game, it’s Talladega Superspeedway — a 2.66-mile track known for all manner of unpredictability and chaos. Following are five things to watch for in Sunday’s 1000Bulbs.com 500, the second of three races in the Round of 12. By Jared Turner

Pressure At The Bubble

E

ntering Sunday’s middle race in the Round of 12, four drivers find themselves on the wrong side of the cutoff for advancing to the Round of 8 and keeping their championship hopes alive. Those drivers are Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Clint Bowyer and Joey Logano, although Logano is technically tied with William Byron for the final transfer spot (Byron would advance on the basis of a tiebreaker). So other than trying to stay out of trouble and making every effort to make up ground in the standings, how do the drivers on the wrong side of the cutline approach Sunday’s race at Talladega, a place where trouble tends to find people in a hurry? “The strategy is to never fall to the back,” said Logano, a three-time Talladega winner. “That is one thing I do know. I just don’t have the patience to do it long enough, and then I usually get in a crash trying to get to the front.”

W

hen the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series competed at Talladega in the spring and at Daytona in July, Chevrolet drivers worked together as de facto teammates in the draft to gain an advantage over their Ford and Toyota counterparts. All indications suggest the Chevrolet drivers plan to employ the same strategy this weekend. “It’s going to look real similar to what it did at Talladega in the spring and Daytona in the summer,” Chevy driver Chase Elliott said. “We made a pretty conscious effort with our manufacturer of Chevrolet to try and do a better job of working together. It worked at Talladega. A lot of us crashed, but at least a Chevrolet still won the summer race at Daytona. Hopefully, it works out.” Ford driver Joey Logano hopes the Ford drivers can counteract the Chevys this time. “We need to figure out a way to take them down,” he said. “We all have to be on the same page together.”

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

The Inevitable “Big One”

W

hen it comes to racing at Talladega, this much is inevitable: There’s going to be one or perhaps even more instances of “The Big One” — NASCAR jargon for the big, multi-car wreck that almost always comes about as a result of the close-quarters, pack racing that is so pervasive at both Talladega and Daytona, NASCAR’s two superspeedways. While knowing that “The Big One” looms is nerve-wracking for everyone, it’s especially so for the 12 title contenders, because they have the most to lose from getting caught up in it. “Our superspeedway cars are always really good, but we’re still at the mercy of everyone else,” playoff driver Alex Bowman said. “It is really just the unknown of what can happen on the track. We just have to be smart in a stressful environment. I think the easiest thing to do is stay our front all day. There isn’t really anywhere to hide.”

A Relaxed, At Ease Kyle Larson

O

f the dozen remaining championship contenders, only Kyle Larson is guaranteed entry into the Round of 8. So while 11 playoff drivers sweat it out this weekend at notoriously treacherous Talladega, Larson has nothing to fear. “Everybody in this playoff field is going to be stressed at Talladega, except for me,” Larson said. “So, that’s good. The last time I was at Talladega, I was on my lid, and I could still end up on my lid on Sunday, but it doesn’t matter.” In all reality, though, Larson still wants to finish as well as possible and amass playoff points in the process. Getting as many playoff points as possible is critical for the Round of 8. “I said we’d be there (at Talladega) with no stress, but I still want to go out there and do what I can to win as well as help our Chevy teammates and just keep winning, because we’ve got to make some more (playoff) points up,” Larson said.

Chase Elliott’s Bid For The ‘Dega Sweep

I

n late April, fan-favorite Chase Elliott electrified the crowd at Talladega by winning for the first time at the 2.66-mile track. This weekend, the second-generation driver will go for the ‘Dega season sweep. Such a feat couldn’t come at a more critical time for Elliott, who after suffering engine trouble last weekend at Dover is currently on the wrong side of the cutline for reaching the Round of 8. For Elliott — who hails from Dawsonville, Georgia, where he still resides — being at Talladega invokes a lot of positive feelings. “The racetrack has always kind of felt like a home race to me,” Elliott said. “It’s really as close as anywhere, it’s almost as close to going to Atlanta distancewise. Any time you race close to home, it’s nice because you don’t have to go very far to go over there to the track, which is why I like it. Definitely the crowd makes you feel at home, too.”

drivers to watch at talladega

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Joey Logano. No driver has been harder to beat at Talladega in recent trips than Joey Logano, the 2018 Monster Energy Series champion. Logano, who currently sits squarely on the bubble for advancement to the next round, has three Talladega wins — all of them coming since 2015 and all but one coming in the fall playoff race. ▶▶ Brad Keselowski. The most successful driver at Talladega in the past decade, Brad Keselowski owns a total of five victories at the 2.66-mile track. The Team Penske driver’s most recent ‘Dega triumph came in the 2017 edition of the fall playoff race, when he led just seven laps. ▶▶ Aric Almirola. The defending winner of the fall Talladega race, Aric Almirola would love nothing more than to return to Victory Lane this weekend and in so doing snap a season-long drought. If Sunday’s race goes anything like last year’s, he will have plenty of help from his Stewart-Haas Racing teammates. ▶▶ Martin Truex jr. Martin Truex Jr. opened the playoffs with back-to-back victories at Las Vegas and Richmond, respectively. While the Joe Gibbs Racing driver has cooled off a bit over the past two weekends, he’s still widely considered the championship frontrunner. This weekend, he will be seeking his first ever Talladega win. ▶▶ Chase Elliott. Chase Elliott scored a popular victory at Talladega in the spring of this year, leading 45 laps on the way to prevailing for the first time at the Alabama facility. The Dawsonville, Georgia native admittedly feels right at home at Talladega, and that’s a good thing since he will need a superb outing on Sunday to keep his title hopes afloat.

Miracle at Rockingham Parsons Wins 1973 Title through Generosity of Others By Ben white

O

n Oct. 21, 1973 at North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, N.C., Benny Parsons, driver of the L.G. DeWittowned No. 72 Chevrolet, had a huge Winston Cup point and only needed to finish the race to collect the championship trophy. But on the 13th lap of 492 laps, he and Johnny Barnes crashed, leaving Parsons’ machine heavily damaged with the right side of the car ripped away. Parsons nursed his ailing car to the garage area thinking the title had been lost. To his surprise, the racing fraternity rallied around the popular driver and put a plan in motion. Crew members from a number of teams began working on Parsons’

car, taking pieces of the roll cage and vital suspension parts from a Chevrolet that didn’t make the starting field. After 136 laps, Parsons’ rolled out of the garage to a cheering crowd. He sealed the deal by finishing 28th after completing 308 laps. He won the championship by 67 points over Cale Yarborough in the final standings. “I was lower than the gutter when I first came back to the pits,” Parsons said in Greg Fielden’s “40 Years of Stock Car Racing” book series. “… But I really got inspired when I saw everyone on our team and other teams swarming over my car. What they did was a real miracle.”

2020 Paint Scheme Reveals, Bubba’s Interview, and Next-Gen Insta We’re back with YouTuber Danny B Talks for another episode of his NASCAR news roundup show, Danny B Needs a Minute. This time he’s looking at all the hot topics trending this week ahead of the Talladega fall race. First up we have new paint scheme reveals, this time for Kyle Busch’s 2020 livery for sponsor Interstate Batteries. Fans have complained for a while that they didn’t care for the so-called “Zebra-stripe” paint scheme on his current Interstate Batteries car, and it 0 2 2

appears that next year’s colors will call back to the older “Lightning” motif of previous generations. We also get reveals for Matt DiBennedetto, Chase Elliott, and more. But that’s not all in Danny’s round up of stories. He also some more news on silly season to share, with updates on who’s getting a ride, and who isn’t. Plus he points us toward a revealing interview this week with Bubba Wallace on Dirty Mo Media, the reveal of the Next-Gen NASCAR on Instagram, and more!

ustin Hill, a 25-year-old racer from Winston, Georgia, has enjoyed a breakout season as the driver of the No. 16 Hattori Racing Enterprises Toyota in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series. Born April 21, 1994, Hill’s racing career started in Quarter Midgets at the age of 6. He won the 2002 Quarter Midget championship at his home track in Cumming, Georgia, before moving on to excel in Bandoleros and Legend Cars. As a teenager, Hill continued to hone his driving skills as he often went fender to fender with the top Late Model competitors in the Southeast. He made his NASCAR K&N Pro Series debut in 2012 and won his first series race the following year while running only five races. Hill added four more K&N Pro Series victories as a full-time series competitor during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Making his NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series debut

Being His Very Best

Marquardt Works to Make Levine Family Racing a Winner

By BEN WHITE

ach Marquardt, underneath mechanic for Levine Family Racing and driver Matt DiBenedetto, attended his first NASCAR race with his father at Michigan International Speedway as the age of 12 in 2004. Racing wasn’t new to him, as his uncle competed in stock car events in Shawano, Wisc. Soon after the Michigan race, Marquardt asked his parents to help him race go-karts that kept him at tracks three nights per week. When a new part was needed, he mowed grass and worked odd jobs for the money. While a senior in high school, Marquardt entered races

“I work as the underneath mechanic but have been able to do a little bit of everything in this sport. That’s what’s so great about being with a smaller, structured team. You can be so much more of an asset in multiple roles with the team.”

crew member profile: ZACH MARQUARDT throughout the United States. His plans to attend technical college to study fabrication or welding led to making his way into NASCAR. He had already gained a reputation among racers and a hard worker. “I knew this was what I was meant to do,” Marquardt said. “Someone reached out to me that was already in the Cup garage, asking about my future plans. That person asked me if I would ever think of coming to North Carolina to work in racing, which was kid of surreal. One thing just kind of led to another.” His mechanical abilities caught the attention of Austin Konetski, a former employee with Roush-Fenway Racing and now the car chief for driver Alex Bowman

at Hendrick Motorsports. Another RFR connection, Greg Emmer, is now car chief for LFR’s No. 95 team. It was Emmer that helped with Marquardt’s initial start with the team in 2012 before moving to Roush-Fenway to work with drivers Carl Edwards and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Marquardt also worked car chief on RFR’s Xfinity Series No. 60 Fords in 2018. “I had the opportunity to come back to the No. 95 team in 2019,” Marquardt said. “They have built a lot of who I am today through the opportunity to build shocks nine years ago. That’s why I came back because I really believe in the direction and morals of this team. I want to help them get their first Cup win.”

▶▶ What do you need to do to win the XFINITY Series title? “The biggest thing is we don’t have a massive amount of playoff points. The three guys up front have a ton of points. We have to focus on managing these races well. It could potentially take a win in the next round if you don’t have a lot of playoff points.” ▶▶ Would you ever want to go back Cup racing? “My biggest thing is whenever I went Cup racing, it wasn’t the right situation. The opportunity, if it were to come along, would need to be a great opportunity where I know I have a chance to win. Whether or not that opportunity comes, the interesting part for me is what I’ve done on the racetrack doesn’t define myself or my career. It’s not something I’m going to stress over.”

MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven

0 5 8

Talladega preview: October 10, 2019

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and

health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate

Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

0 6 0

Talladega preview: October 10, 2019

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
