WE ALL NEEDED A RACE LIKE TALLADEGA In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp is here to give his race review and reaction to last night’s Geico 500 at Talladega. After rain pushed the race from Sunday to Monday, and a spot of rain in turns 1 and 2 delayed it even more last night, there was a lot of anticipation for the race to get underway. And that anticipation paid off. The typical super speedway strategy is to hang back and race conservatively, only pushing up front when it really counts, like 0 0 4

stages and the final green flag run. But the constant threat of weather, more rain on the track, had the drivers constantly pushing to be up front, lest the red flag wave before they could make their final move. Eric takes us through all the action, and takes us through the final standings to find out how they did it. Where did this double delayed rainy Talladega wind up on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

LESSONS LEARNED AT TALLADEGA TALLADEGA OFFERS A RACE TO REMEMBER Although run a day later than originally scheduled because of persistent rain on Sunday afternoon, the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway didn’t disappoint. Not in the least. Along with delivering a great race and a heartpounding finish, the event will forever go down as one of the biggest in the history of the sport because of the opportunity it created for drivers to rally around and show their support for one of their own — Mobile, Alabama, native and African-American driver Bubba Wallace, who continues to lead the fight for racial equality in the sport. BUBBA WALLACE’S POPULARITY IS SOARING

N

o matter where he goes or what he does these days, Bubba Wallace seems to be right in the middle of the conversation. As the NASCAR Cup Series’ only African-American driver, Wallace has been outspoken in recent weeks about this desire for the sport to be more inclusive — and NASCAR has listened. Although the Talladega race weekend was hard on Wallace for a variety of reasons, it provided another golden opportunity for him to once again use the unique platform he’s been given. “This is probably the most badass moment right here,” Wallace said as fans cheered him after the race. “It’s been tough. It’s been hell. Well, I wouldn’t say hell; it’s just been hectic, you know, carrying this weight, this burden. I wouldn’t really say burden, either. I’m proud to stand where I’m at and carry a new face. This is truly incredible, and I’m proud to be a part of this sport.”

THE NEW RULES PACKAGE WAS A SUCCESS

I

n the weeks following the near calamitous ending to February’s Daytona 500, NASCAR worked diligently to come up with a safer and more suitable rules package for the next superspeedway event, which turned out to be Monday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway. So what kind of impact did the changes have? At the very least, they seemed to help preempt a wreck anywhere near the level of what Ryan Newman experienced at Daytona earlier this year. “I thought it was great racing,” second-place finisher Ricky Stenhouse Jr. said of Talladega. “You had to work really hard to form your line and really work the side draft, pushing cars, getting cars to push you. You had to work hard for it. I felt like everybody kept their cars in control. We had some big saves out there. I saw, I think, the 12 (Ryan Blaney), the 11 (Denny Hamlin), 22 (Joey Logano) and myself a couple times get pretty sideways but gather it back in.”

THE FINAL LAP WAS ONE FOR THE AGES

A

nyone who didn’t like the final lap of Monday’s race at Talladega must have simply not been paying attention. In sum: It offered everything a fan could ever hope or wish for in a final lap — multiple lead changes, two multi-car wrecks of the non-violent nature, and a photo finish. How wild and crazy was the last lap around the 2.66mile high-banked layout? Consider that race winner Ryan Blaney edged runner-up Ricky Stenhouse Jr. by a paltry .007 seconds, which equated to one of the closest finishes in NASCAR history. What made the final lap particularly exhilarating was the fact that Blaney took the white flag in third but finished first by beating back an array of challengers who included Stenhouse, Kevin Harvick, Aric Almirola, Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek. In total, the race produced 56 lead changes — the most at Talladega since the final race of the tandem drafting era in 2011.

DRIVERS AND TEAMS HIT A HOME RUN WITH SALUTE TO BUBBA WALLACE

A

fter NASCAR revealed late Sunday that someone with garage area access had left a noose in the garage stall of African-American driver Bubba Wallace at some point earlier in the day, an immediate investigation commenced with the goal of identifying and punishing the person who committed this atrocious and unequivocally racist act. Meanwhile, drivers and crew members from various teams were justifiably outraged and quickly went to social media, among other places, to offer their support and encouragement to Wallace. However, the greatest act of solidarity — perhaps in NASCAR history — occurred just moments before Monday’s race when many of those same drivers and crew members came together to push Wallace’s No. 43 car down pit road and to the front of the starting grid. Clearly touched by the gesture, Wallace then stood in front of his car fighting back tears as drivers came by one-by-one to shake his hand and offer their support for their friend and highly respected fellow competitor.

RYAN BLANEY IS QUIETLY MORPHING INTO A TOP SUPERSPEEDWAY DRIVER

W

hile last fall’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega probably seems like a decade ago when considering all that has happened in the world since then, it’s important to remember that Monday’s winner — Ryan Blaney — went to Victory Lane back in October here as well. Of course, the Team Penske driver also has been strong at Daytona in relatively recent times, having finished second in February’s Daytona 500 and led a race-high 118 of 207 laps in the 2018 Daytona 500. Conclusion? Blaney is starting to get a real handle on this superspeedway racing thing. “You’re always learning, right?” Blaney said after Monday’s race. “This package was a little bit different than the one we had in Daytona, or last year (at Talladega) even. Especially at these places, a big notebook is important. You’re constantly remembering things and saying, ‘I should have done this here, this here. This worked pretty decent.’ You’re always kind of remembering that.”

JUST SAYIN’ ▶

TALLADEGA WAS THE BEST AND WORST OF TIMES

The race weekend at Talladega Superspeedway showcased the best and worst of humanity. The worst was on display when NASCAR revealed that someone whose identity we still don’t know left a noose in the garage stall of African-American driver Bubba Wallace. Equally uncalled for was the sight of someone flying a small plane above the track that was attached to a Confederate flag and carried the message “Defund NASCAR.” Thankfully, we also got to witness the best in humanity when drivers and team members united during pre-race ceremonies to show their unwavering support for Bubba. JA RED TURNER ▶  THESE LATE STARTS AREN’T WORKING ANYMORE When will NASCAR and the TV networks finally wise up and stop scheduling these start times for 3 or 4 p.m. Eastern or somewhere in between? I understand that it’s all about numbers and ratings and viewership. As a former writer for FOX Sports, I really DO get it. But it’s not a coincidence that virtually every race these days is interrupted or delayed by rain. It is summertime, after all, when late afternoon storms and popup showers happen almost every day. So why not be mindful of this reality and have a few races start at noon or 1 like they did in days gone by?

■■ Bubba Wallace and Kyle Busch embrace before the race at Talladega.

▶  NASCAR SHOULD CONSIDER PERMANENTLY SCRAPPING QUALIFYING Since NASCAR returned from its two-month hiatus necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic, traditional qualifying procedures have all but gone by the wayside, with NASCAR opting to set its starting grid based on a random draw of numbers by the drivers. While there are undoubtedly some fans who still prefer the traditional qualifying format, the new format seems to be working — especially with so few fans being at the track. Perhaps even once fans return to the track as normal, NASCAR should only host qualifying for some of the bigger races. After all, if most people don’t miss it, what’s the point of having it?

OP-ED

WHAT IT MEANS

TO STAND WITH BUBBA WALLACE BY ROB TIONGSON

■■ Cup Series drivers did an admirable job of having Bubba Wallace’s back at Talladega.

0 2 6

I

n the past few weeks, the overall direction of NASCAR shifted from a sport struggling to shake its stereotypes to a sport committed to progress. When Bubba Wallace spoke up and stood up against the oppression towards racial equality, particularly with African Americans, it was a moment in which he opened previously closed doors. Without a doubt, Wallace and his peers engaged in meaningful,

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: JUNE 23, 2020

productive conversations on doing more than just listening. Each wanted to be parts of the solution towards ushering an era of welcoming diversity and inclusion. As the drivers and teams prepared for the GEICO 500, a ProConfederate Organization flew a banner with the Confederate flag that had the message “Defund NASCAR.” Along with that, there was the sight of vehicles with this flag.

OP-ED Honestly, that angered me as it is a flag associated with hate, oppression and racism. When Americans pride themselves with their country, isn’t the flag that carries the colors of red, white and blue the only one that matters? Embracing one’s heritage means evolving with the times and being open-minded about what we, as a society, can do – more than just listening -- when someone expresses discomfort. Above all, when a noose was discovered outside of Bubba Wallace’s garage stall at Talladega, it absolutely enraged me. It reminded me of just how much work, we as a country, have to do with having a society priding itself with racial equality. I also asked myself, “What could possess someone to commit an act of heinous hatred?” Is it really that bad for NASCAR to embrace racial equality and a willingness to welcome new faces into the sport, be it drivers, pit crew members or fans? Isn’t it a winning situation to have more, new people versus complaining that the 0 2 8

sport lacking a growing fanbase and roster of drivers and crew members in waiting? When the incredible scenes unfolded prior to the GEICO 500, I was quite touched seeing a family coming together. The famed No. 43 Chevrolet Camaro, with Wallace in the driver’s seat, was being pushed towards the front of the grid by his fellow competitors with various pit crews walking behind him. That moment was special on its own in seeing the NASCAR family come together to lend and show their support for Wallace, a racer who deserved all the love and care from his comrades. Then something even more incredible unfolded. When Wallace clambered out of his car, he was overcome by the emotions, and it was quite understandable. Beyond the scenes at Talladega, various sports icons like LeBron James and Lewis Hamilton expressed their support for Wallace from afar. Wallace has embraced his unwavering role as a true leader and catalyst of change not only for NASCAR, but with our world. Seeing him acknowledge the fans at Talladega in “Black Lives

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: JUNE 23, 2020

■■ In its statement, NASCAR said it “will do everything we can to identify the person(s) responsible and eliminate them from the sport.”

Matters” shirt was absolutely moving, the start of a great movement that makes me proud to be associated with the sport. There were many fans and NASCAR supporters who took to social media and changed their avatars to a “Petty Blue” background with the No. 43 with the hashtag #IStandWithBubba. After all that Wallace experienced, it’s my hopes that we all truly mean it. To stand with Bubba Wallace means more than listening. It’s more than praying, changing an avatar, or expressing anger on social media. It’s about taking a good look at the mirror and asking yourself what you will do to contribute towards a more equal, inclusive society. Standing with Bubba Wallace means

being a catalyst of goodwill and change, a challenge we can and should accept. Hopefully, this isn’t the only time that Wallace realizes he doesn’t have to stand alone. Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick taking the initiative, along with Denny Hamlin driving a National Civil Rights Museum car, is a start. I implore all of us to do our part to make sure that when the going gets tough, we continue to stand with Wallace and to be a part of the solution. Whether that’s donating to a good cause that promotes social and racial equality, being a kind person to all in your neighborhood, or taking the time to understand about the struggles that minorities endure. Ultimately, standing with Wallace means that we all must be part of the solution. 0 2 9

Dylan Duval BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with Dylan Duval, a driver in the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series. ▶  HOW COMPETITIVE AND ACTION-PACKED HAS THE ENASCAR COCA-COLA IRACING SERIES BECOME SINCE YOUR FIRST FEW SEASONS? This season has been incredible thus far. The racing this year has been unlike any other that I’ve been a part of. The competition level is at an all-time high. Back when I first got my feet wet in the series in 2012, going into a race, you knew it would be fought out between a handful of competitors. This season, you never know who might find Victory Lane. Every driver has the raw speed to go out there and win. The increased competition has made the racing a lot more tense. If you make a mistake, you’re not giving up one or two spots. You’re likely giving up a handful. ▶  WHAT’S IT BEEN LIKE TO DRIVE FOR STEWART-HAAS ESPORTS, A TEAM SYNONYMOUS WITH ON-TRACK SUCCESS IN NASCAR? Driving for Stewart-Haas eSports is really an honor more than anything. What Stewart-Haas Racing has done in their time in NASCAR has been amazing. They’re a legendary organization, and I take great pride in the fact that they selected me to be one of the drivers they wanted to have represent them. Coming into the season, the first thing I thought was how cool it would be to drive for them and how awesome it was that they were taking an interest in iRacing and our series. The previous year, we had a draft and I wasn’t selected by any of the teams. Going from the disappointment of not being chosen to getting selected by what I considered the coolest team to be involved with our series was an awesome feeling.

We haven’t heard a lot from Rusty outside of these race reviews lately, and he explains why with all the issues surrounding NASCAR at the moment. The racing however, was exactly what everyone needed. Rusty takes us through the incredible night of racing, and what might have contributed to the 0 3 2

on track product we saw. He takes us through the recent history of the superspeedway package on the race cars, and the changes undergone following Ryan Newman’s horrifying crash in Daytona earlier this year. What else contributed to the excellent racing we saw? And what was Rusty’s take on Ryan Blaney’s rough and tumble drag race to the finish line? Watch the episode and find out, and let him know your thoughts in the comments below.
