NASCAR Delivers an Instant Talladega Classic! In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through his reaction to the 1000bulbs.com 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. With one of the closest finishes in NASCAR history, a rain delay, and some heartbreaking eliminations, there’s a lot to go through. The big storyline coming out of the race was the controversial finish. The sixth closest finish in history, with Blaney besting Newman by only about a foot, was called 0 0 4

into question by an incident on the double yellow line. Eric walks us through the implications, the context behind the double yellow rule, and gives us his take on what happened. There were also eliminations following the results, narrowing the field to the top 8. The eliminations were fan favorites like Alex Bowman, Chase Elliot, and William Byron. What does it all mean for the playoffs? And where does Talladega land on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch and find out!

Rain delay doesn’t dampen one of best finishes in NASCAR history
P
ersistent rain on Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway relegated Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers to completing only one of three stages. Weather conditions were much more favorable on Monday afternoon for the final two stages — and they were certainly worth the wait. Following are five key takeaways from the 1000Bulbs.com 500, Race No. 2 of 3 in the Round of 12. By Jared Turner

Talladega Was Kind To The Underdogs
T
hanks in large part to an inordinate amount of attrition resulting from drivers being caught up in wrecks, the final finishing order at Talladega was quite atypical. Absent from the top 10 were all but three playoff drivers. Included among the top 10 were fifth-place Michael McDowell, seventh-place Corey LaJoie and 10th-place Ty Dillon — drivers who don’t typically finish so close to the front. “We call that stacking pennies,” LaJoie said of his surprising outcome. “You take a 33rdplace car and finish seventh with it, so we’ll take it and run.” Asked about what comes from such a positive day, LaJoie was candid. “Make a little more money,” he said. “That always helps, so that’s good.” McDowell, who had just one other top-10 finish all season, was equally elated. “You’re always looking for anything to build momentum,” he said. “Results always do that, and that’s always part of it. It’s always good to get a top-five and to have a strong day.”

Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott, Clint Bowyer and William Byron Are In Trouble
W
ith two of three races complete in the Round of 12, four drivers find themselves in virtual must-win situations heading into next weekend’s elimination race at Kansas Speedway where the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship field will be trimmed from 12 to eight. Those drivers are ninth-place Alex Bowman (18 points behind the Round of 8 cutline), Chase Elliott (-22), Clint Bowyer (-24) and William Byron (-27). All four were involved in accidents on Sunday at Talladega. For any of them to advance to the next round, they will need to either win at Kansas or finish well and have some of their fellow title contenders succumb to misfortune. “You have to have the mindset to go out there and control what we can control and do everything we can to get a win,” said Elliott, who won the final race in the Round of 16. “That’s all we can do.”

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

Aric Almirola’s Push Was The Difference For Ryan Blaney
L
ast fall at Talladega, Aric Almirola scored the win by passing Kurt Busch on the final lap when Busch ran out of gas. On Sunday, Almirola played a different but equally pivotal role in the final outcome, as he pushed fellow Ford driver Ryan Blaney to a razor-thin victory over Ryan Newman. Although Almirola desperately wanted to win himself, he was happy to be able to assist a fellow Ford in a race where drivers in large part chose to work only with drivers aligned with the same manufacturer. “It’s nice to get a top five and run up front, finish really well for the Fords, get a Ford Mustang to Victory Lane,” Almirola said. “I just wish it was my Ford Mustang.” Blaney credited Almirola’s push for giving him just what he needed to edge Newman. “I can’t thank Aric Almirola enough for helping me out there at the end,” Blaney said.

Alex Bowman Triggered The “Big One” And Owned It
L
eading the race on lap 106 of 188, Alex Bowman triggered a huge wreck when he attempted to block fellow championship contender Joey Logano and lost control of his No. 88 Chevrolet at the front of the pack after he and Logano made contact. Caught up in the accident were Chase Elliott, Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr. and others. Bowman, whose championship hopes suffered a huge blow in the fracas, later took responsibility for setting in motion an accident that likewise impacted several other playoff drivers. “I just didn’t realize how fast the 22 (Logano) was coming there,” the Hendrick Motorsports driver said. “I probably shouldn’t have even attempted to block that. He was a solid chunk faster than us, so that’s on me. It’s part of Talladega and superspeedway racing. It’s really unfortunate for our team. I apologize to the other guys that got taken out in that.”

Ryan Blaney Is Peaking At The Right Time
A
ll in all, it’s been a pretty quiet season for Ryan Blaney, who made the playoffs on the basis of points but failed to score a win in the first 30 events. The Team Penske driver put on a show at Talladega, however, leading 35 laps and nipping veteran Ryan Newman by .007 seconds for the win in a last-lap thriller. Blaney’s third career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory punched his ticket into the Round of 8 and put the NASCAR world on notice that the thirdgeneration driver shouldn’t be written off or overlooked as a contender for the 2019 championship. “We are moving on,” Blaney said during post-race interviews at Talladega. “This is super cool.” Now with a guaranteed berth in the next round, Blaney can breathe a sigh of relief and not have to sweat this weekend’s elimination race at Kansas Speedway, where the playoff field will be cut from 12 drivers to eight.

The Talladega Tribute “Really Hit Ole Rusty” YouTuber Rusty Walrus is back with his reaction video to the 1000bulbs.com 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. With so much tight pack racing, incredible wrecks and blowovers, and one of the closest finishes in NASCAR history, Rusty barely knows where to begin! First though, Rusty takes us back to before the race even began on Sunday, and he recalls Richard Childress lapping the field in Dale Earnhardt’s iconic No. 3 car. While this occasion is often used simply for promotional 0 1 8

purposes, this year’s remembrance of Dale Sr. “really hit ole’ Rusty,” as he says. But don’t get it twisted, Rusty isn’t all emotions, even after that race. He takes us through the insider rumors about team Chevy, and what they might be up to behind closed doors. Execs in suits telling the drivers how to race? Truth or tinfoil? Rusty talks us through it. All of that and more in this week’s episode of the Rusty Report.

Just Sayin’ Jimmie Johnson was one of several big names to get involved in wrecks at Talladega.
Too Much at Stake Talladega Is Great But Shouldn’t Be In The Playoffs By Jared Turner
I
f you like thrills and spills, Talladega Superspeedway is your track. After all, there’s no other venue on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series tour where outcomes are any less predictable or finishes are any more spectacular. Monday’s race (which actually started on Sunday but had its second and third stage postponed a day by rain) featured a little bit of everything — crazy wrecks, a wild finish, a somewhat surprising winner, a large number of lead changes, more than one back-marker driver coming home in the top 10. Heck, Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet even briefly caught on fire and Brendan Gaughan’s car went airborne in vintage Talladega fashion (thankfully, neither driver was hurt). All of this is what makes Talladega so unique and special, and it’s what keeps fans coming to the 2.66-mile high-banked track every spring and fall. There’s just one problem, however: Talladega, for all the good that it brings — and there’s plenty of it — has no business being in the playoffs. Oh, sure, one could argue that in light of all the positives, there’s really not a more appropriate playoff venue than the popular Alabama
0 2 0
Talladega Rearview: October 15, 2019
facility. But when only 25 percent of the playoff drivers finish in the top 10, as happened on Monday, that’s a problem. The reason, of course, was the heavy attrition brought on by multiple multi-car wrecks that are a bi-product of the three- and four-wide close-quarters racing that Talladega produces. A top-10 finishing order mostly bereft of big names isn’t a problem most of the time, but, in the playoffs, it is. It’s not like the title contenders didn’t have the fastest cars on Sunday. They absolutely did. But most of them were caught up in accidents that ruined their chances of a decent finish. Talladega is great for many reasons, but any track where drivers are sitting ducks at the mercy of the draft and someone else’s illtimed move has no place in the playoffs.

PEAK Series Championship at Homestead-Miami Novak vs Leahy on the Final Lap By: M atteo M archeschi
O
n Thursday, October 10th, the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series headed to the Homestead-Miami Speedway for its finale, where it would crown its 2019 series champion. Like in NASCAR’s three national touring series, four come in with a shot at the title, and the highest finisher of the four wins. The final four were determined through the previous three races. G2 eSports pilot Keegan Leahy, Roush-Fenway Racing driver Zack Novak, Joe Gibbs Racing road course ace Bobby Zalenski, and Team Dillon eSports underdog Blake Reynolds. Leahy won twice, and was considered the favorite, with several great runs in the playoffs. Novak, the 17-yearold from Connecticut, had three wins entering Thursday, but hadn’t dominated on the long run like Leahy had. Zalenski, the road course ace, took wins at both Sonoma and the Roval, the latter of which locked him into the final four. Zalenski, though, had shown good, but not dominating speed on the ovals as well. Reynolds made the final four under the radar, going winless but staying near the top in points. Winning a duel with Garrett Lowe at the Roval won him the right to race for the title. When the green flag flew, Leahy jumped out front. Novak showed plenty of speed as well, but couldn’t keep up with Leahy when runs got long. Zalenski struggled to keep pace with those two, but showed
0 3 0
Talladega Rearview: October 15, 2019
flashes of speed on restarts. Reynolds had a respectable showing overall, but lacked the speed of Leahy and Novak. Leahy looked to set sail to win his first series title, but a pair of cautions and less-than-ideal restarts for Leahy put him behind, allowing Novak in front. Novak settled between Jimmy Mullis in front and Ryan Luza behind as the other three championship contenders grew smaller in his mirror. However, with 20 laps remaining, several cars piled into a sizable wreck on the frontstretch, bringing about the yellow flag and a final round of pit stops. A pit mistake by Mullis allowed Novak and Leahy to exit pit road first and third, with Luza between. On the restart, Novak and Leahy swapped the lead several times. Novak looked to have it in hand until a charge by Leahy put them side by side on the final lap. However, Novak’s outside line prevailed, winning him the championship and $40,000. It’s Novak’s first title in his third year of Peak Series competition. The Peak Series will likely return in February, though the 2020 schedule has not been released yet.

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.
Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. Magic Clear Lens is a cleaning, preservation, and maintenance treatment that instantly reveals a bright and clear headlight. MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven
0 5 8

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and
health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate
Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in
0 6 0

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
