The Losing Streak is Finally Over for Kyle Larson In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp walks us through all the NASCAR action from Dover this weekend at the Drydene 400. With the race providing the cut off before the Round of 8 in the playoffs, there was plenty of drama to be found on the track, and plenty of drama found in the finish. But the human drama wasn’t the only story coming out of Dover this weekend. There was also the on-track product, the racing itself. Unfortunately, the 2019 aero package repeated its performance 0 0 4

from the previous Dover, and the racing proved very difficult for drivers to pass. Eric breaks down why the cars have such difficulty passing on these tracks, and what NASCAR might do for a solution. But that’s not all on this episode of Out of the Groove. Eric takes us through the team performance, and checks in on his playoffs pick, Denny Hamlin. How did he perform at Dover, and how does he stack up against his closest competition? All that and more, plus the Groovy Gauge, of course, in this week’s episode!

This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Jimmie Johnson Misfired On His Best Shot
I
n danger of going winless for a second consecutive season, Jimmie Johnson arrived at Dover seeing his best remaining opportunity of 2019 to get to Victory Lane. But instead of breaking through at the track where he’s the all-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series wins leader with 11 victories, Johnson finished eighth. While such an outcome wasn’t bad, it certainly wasn’t what the seven-time champ had in mind. “I felt like we had a shot,” Johnson said. “When we were in clean air, our lap times were great. Just as everyone experienced, it was really tough to pass. We had a few things that set us back and lost track position throughout the day. But we had a really fast race car. We were able to pass some, which I don’t think many could pass at all. All in all, it was a good day. We ran better than eighth for most of it, but we just couldn’t finish higher.”

Denny Hamlin And Joey Logano Have Differing Viewpoints
A
lthough they have a history of not always seeing eye-to-eye, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano have played relatively pretty together in recent years. Their relationship was tested on Sunday, however, when the two disagreed sharply on whether Logano was justified in racing Hamlin hard while being more than 20 laps down. “Well, the situation was that I had about four or five cars that it was possible for me to catch, which is five points,” Logano said. “You tell me if it is worth it. I would say it is worth it. I have to try to get those spots if I can get them.” Hamlin, meanwhile, scoffed at the notion that Logano had good reason to be so aggressive. “Make up position? He’s 24 laps down,” Hamlin said. “That’s the most idiotic statement I’ve ever heard. We’re battling for the end of the stage. It’s not your day, you had bad luck. We get it. But why? I don’t understand that at all.”

Alex Bowman Has Some Real Fight In Him
A
fter scratching and clawing his way into the Round of 12 last weekend at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL where he managed to majorly tick off Bubba Wallace, Alex Bowman carried a similar approach into Dover, where he made early-race contact with fellow playoff driver Ryan Blaney. After battling hard all day, Bowman finished third — good enough to move up two spots in the standings and put himself in position to advance to the Round of 8, as things currently stand. “I’m really proud of my race team and everyone for keeping their heads on straight,” the Hendrick Motorsports driver said. “I’ll take it after last week. We got together with the 12 (car of Blaney) there off of Turn 2 really early, and I was like ‘No, not again.’ I’m glad he saved it. Just two cars going for one spot on the racetrack; nothing happened from there. We had a clean day.”

Kyle Larson Has Moved From Underdog To Contender Status
A
lthough still behind the eight-ball in terms of playoff points, Kyle Larson is now a legitimate contender for the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series title. Oh sure, it’s been an upand-down year for the Chip Ganassi Racing driver, but everyone knows that under the current points system, you don’t have to be a paragon of consistency to win the championship. Rather, it’s more about who peaks at the right time — during the playoffs — and Larson is peaking right now. On Sunday at Dover, he won convincingly and ended a winless streak dating back more than two years. Their berth in the Round of 8 totally secure, Larson and his team can treat the next weekends as little more than tune-ups for the next round, which clearly gives them an edge. Should Larson make it into the Championship at 4 at Homestead, he would stand an excellent shot at taking the title, since he is historically fast at the 1.5-mile South Florida track.

It Was A Really Bad Day For Three Playoff Drivers
S
unday’s opening race in the Round of 12 couldn’t have gone any worse for playoff drivers Joey Logano (axle), Ryan Blaney (broken spindle) and Chase Elliott (engine), who finished 34th, 35th and 38th, respectively. Now, with two races left in the Round of 12, all three find themselves on the wrong side of the cutline for advancing to the Round of 8, although Logano is technically tied with eighth-place William Byron who would advance in a tiebreaker. “Things happen,” Logano said after Sunday’s finish. “We definitely used our mulligan. We just have to be perfect now. We have two really good racetracks coming up, though. Talladega is arguably one of our best racetracks, and I would say Kansas is as well. We just have to be perfect from here.” Describing his day at Dover, Elliott put it more succinctly. “It’s an unfortunate way to start this round, for sure,” he said.

Just Sayin’ Jimmie Johnson’s current contract with Hendrick Motorsports expires after the 2020 season.
Undecided On Future, Jimmie Johnson Has Nothing To Prove By Jared Turner
H
endrick Motorsports received some really good news last week when Ally Financial, the primary sponsor on Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet, revealed that it would continue as the primary backer of the No. 48 car through the 2023 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. Ally, which became the primary sponsor on Johnson’s car beginning in 2019, originally had just a two-year deal with the team. With sponsorship in place for the next four seasons, the question now becomes whether Johnson — whose current contract runs through 2020 — will retire or reup with the organization one last time. Johnson, who turned 44 in September, is arguably in the best physical shape he’s ever been in. It would be disingenuous, however, not to at least question whether his skills have fallen off a bit. After all, it’s been more than two years since Johnson celebrated in a Monster Energy Series Victory Lane, and the seven-time champion of NASCAR’s premier series recently failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in 18 years as a driver at the sport’s premier level.
0 1 8
Dover Rearview: October 7, 2019
While virtually any fairminded person would be willing to admit that Johnson is past his prime, the question is whether he can still contend for victories and championships under the right circumstances. So far, Johnson seems to be meshing reasonably well with Cliff Daniels — his third crew chief in less than 10 months — and Johnson has spoken at length recently about how he believes Hendrick Motorsports as a whole has unearthed some speed that it lacked earlier in the year. So, should Johnson sign another contract or hang it up? Ultimately, that decision is his and no one else’s. Regardless of what direction he ultimately decides to move in, however, this much is not up for debate: As a seventime champ and winner of 83 races at NASCAR’s premier level, Johnson has absolutely nothing to prove to anyone.

“All He Needs to Do is Make it to Homestead” YouTuber Rusty Walrus is back with his reaction video to the Drydene 400 at Dover International Speedway. This stage of the playoffs provided the berth into the Round of 8, and Kyle Larson’s surprise win sent shockwaves through the fanbase. First up Rusty looks at the context of Larson’s win, and gives us the phrase “all he needs to do is make it to Homestead.” While heavy hitters like Denny Hamlin or Martin Truex, Jr. might be a safer pick for championship contender this year, Rusty 0 2 2
Dover Rearview: October 7, 2019
gives us some insight on how Larson - or even someone like Chase Elliot - might pull off an upset win at Homestead-Miami later this year. But with all the talk around winners, Rusty doesn’t let us forget about Kyle Busch, a driver who most obviously has not been winning the past few months of the season. While he looked like the favorite to win at the beginning of 2019, Busch’s performance has dropped considerably,. All of that and more in this week’s episode of the Rusty Report.

PEAK Series Prepares for its Thrilling Conclusion Understanding How We Got to Miami By: M atteo M archeschi
W
ell, this is it. Only a few days remain until the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series season reaches its thrilling conclusion at Homestead-Miami Speedway. So how did we get here? Let’s have a quick recap before the season comes to an end. Final Four driver Zack Novak got his season off to a roaring start, taking the win at Daytona. While Novak held his own all season, Ryan Luza, FlipSid3 Tactics driver, would take three out of the next four race wins
0 3 0
at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Texas Speedway, and Richmond Raceway. Independent driver Eric J. Smith grabbed the win in between, in the inaugural event for the 2019 aerodynamics package at Auto Club Speedway. Talladega Superspeedway brought Nick Ottinger to victory lane for the only time in 2019, before Novak returned to victory lane, this time at Kansas. Keegan Leahy then caught fire, winning two of the next three at Charlotte and Chicagoland, separated by an unsurprising
Dover Rearview: October 7, 2019
and dominating Bobby Zalenski victory at Sonoma. Novak won a third time, tying Luza for the most of anyone, at Kentucky. The next race at Pocono kicked off a streak of surprise winners. First, Richmond Raceway driver Jimmy Mullis grabbed the victory at the Tricky Triangle, followed by Renegades pilot Garrett Lowe at Michigan. Clint Bowyer Racing driver Casey Kirwin grabbed the lead late at Bristol to take the victory. Two non-playoff drivers won the first two playoff races: Ashton Crowder got Burton Kligerman eSports the victory at Darlington, while Corey Vincent grabbed the Renegades their second win of the season at Indianapolis. The penultimate race, which took place at the Charlotte Roval, was won by Bobby Zalenski, who needed the win to earn a spot in the final four. So we’re down to four: Blake Reynolds, Leahy, Novak, and Zalenski. It will be one heck of a race, and you’ll be able to watch it all live on Thursday, October 10th, at 5 p.m. Eastern time on NBCSN.

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.
Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven
0 5 8

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and
health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate
Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
