Who’s Feeling the Pain Points in the Playoffs? In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us a full look and preview of this weekend’s upcoming race at Indianapolis, the Brickyard 400. This preview comes amidst a lot of fan controversy this year, as many fans have been debating the merits of keeping the Brickyard 400 on the schedule. Eric takes us through all sides of the issue, looking at attendance, ratings, and more to find out the truth about Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Next up we have a new look at the playoffs 0 0 4

standings. With the regular season ticking to a close, a handful of drivers on the edge of the points bubble are really starting to feel the pain. Mainstay Ryan Newman and iconic seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson are both dangling just below the line, with precious little opportunity to improve before time is up. Will we actually see Jimmie Johnson eliminated from the playoffs? How serious of a contender is Daniel Suarez this year? And is Indy really only meant for Indy cars? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

I
t’s all come down to this. With 25 of 26 races complete in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series regular season, Sunday’s Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will set the grid for the 2019 Monster Energy Series playoffs. Following are five things to watch for in what is always one of the most important and prestigious races of the season. By Jared Turner

An Intense Battle At The Bubble
B
arring a surprise winner at Indianapolis, Ryan Newman or Daniel Suarez will likely claim the 16th and final berth in the playoffs. So, who has the advantage? Based on points, it’s a dead heat, since Newman and Suarez are tied for the final spot. History at Indianapolis would certainly give the edge to Newman, however, especially when you consider that Newman is a former Brickyard 400 winner (2013) and has made 18 starts at the historic oval, compared to Suarez’s two — neither of which has produced a top-five finish (he finished seventh in 2017). It also doesn’t hurt Newman that he’s a native Hoosier, having grown up in South Bend, Indiana. Of course, the fact that Newman and Suarez weren’t exactly pleased with each other after making contact in last weekend’s race at Darlington makes this battle all the more intriguing. Rather than offering a prediction on who ultimately gains the upper hand, a coin toss might be more appropriate.

A Riled Up and Raring-To-Go Version of “Rowdy”
S
ince winning four of the season’s first 14 races, Kyle Busch has cooled off considerably. In fact, the Joe Gibbs Racing drive whose nickname is “Rowdy” has gone winless in his last 11 starts. Busch continues to run near the front virtually every single weekend, however, and remains well-positioned for a deep playoff run based on the slew of playoff points he’s amassed in the regular season. So will the 2015 series champ return to his winning ways on Sunday at Indianapolis or will his “drought” continue? The fact that Busch has already wrapped up the regular season championship — which he did last weekend at Darlington Raceway — should free him up to go for broke this weekend. Busch’s recent history at Indianapolis, which includes two wins in the past four years, also bodes well. Of course, Busch’s ultimate incentive might be the fact that his three JGR teammates have now all been to Victory Lane since him.

Jimmie Johnson’s Last Chance
I
n danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in all the years since joining NASCAR’s premier series in 2002, Jimmie Johnson has one last chance to make the cut. That chance will come in Sunday’s race at Indy, where Johnson will most likely need to win to advance. While such a feat seems unlikely in light of Johnson’s 2019 struggles and drought dating back to 2017, the driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet has a history of clutch performances. Johnson will need another clutch performance on Sunday if he hopes to be one of the 16 drivers still in title contention at day’s end. The good news for Johnson is that, despite his relatively disappointing 2019 resume, he’s a four-time winner at the Brickyard, so successfully navigating the 2.5-mile track isn’t a problem for him. Johnson, more than anything, just needs all the stars to line up, in order to leave Indy with a trophy in hand.

That Special Indy Feeling
S
ince opening in 1909, Indianapolis Motor Speedway has become one of the most famous motorsports venues in the world. From the track’s familiar garage area known as “Gasoline Alley” to the historic yard of original bricks stretched across the start/finish line, IMS is full of icons that capture the imagination and serve as a reminder of its deep history. While IMS will always be known first and foremost for the open-wheel cars that have traversed its surface for the world-famous Indianapolis 500 held every Memorial Day weekend, NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 at Indy has carved out a place as one of the most prestigious events on the NASCAR calendar. A win at Indy, regardless of whether it’s in an open wheel car or a full bodied Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series stock car, is a moment in time that a driver will forever cherish. Just ask those who’ve been fortunate enough to experience it.

Manufacturer Wars
F
rom 2003-2014, Chevrolets won every Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Indianapolis. That’s pretty remarkable, considering it’s virtually unheard of for one manufacturer to score this many victories in a row at a particular track. The Bowtie brigade’s domination at Indy came to a screeching halt, however, in 2015 when Kyle Busch recorded Toyota’s first ever victory at IMS. Busch, still in his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, returned to Victory Lane in 2016 as he became only the second driver to notch back-to-back Brickyard triumphs. Chevrolet has since returned to Victory Lane at Indy, thanks to Kasey Kahne’s win in 2017, and last season Brad Keselowski became the first Ford driver to win at Indianapolis since Dale Jarrett all the way back in 1999. Will the recent parity prevail this weekend or will one manufacturer catch fire and check out from the field? Stay tuned.

drivers to watch at indianapolis
By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Kyle Busch is clearly growing impatient, having not won a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race since early June. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver will be the favorite, however, at Indianapolis — a track where he scored convincing wins in 2015 and 2016 and helped Toyota finally break through at IMS. ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie Johnson is a four-time winner at Indianapolis, but the seven-time champion of NASCAR’s premier series hasn’t been to Victory Lane at the fabled venue since 2012. Johnson will likely need to recapture his old magic at Indianapolis this weekend to have any hope of advancing to NASCAR’s playoff — something he’s previously never failed to do. ▶▶ Brad Keselowski. When Brad Keselowski earned his first Brickyard 400 victory last season, it marked Ford’s first win at Indianapolis since Dale Jarrett triumphed at the world-famous speedway in 1999. Will Ford now make it back-to-back wins at the Brickyard? Keselowski, the 2012 champion of NASCAR’s premier series, might be Ford’s best hope. ▶▶ Ryan Newman. South Bend, Indiana native Ryan Newman earned a win he’d always dreamed of when he took the checkered flag in the 2013 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. Newman, who triumphed at Indy for Stewart-Haas Racing, is now part of Roush Fenway Racing and is currently tied with SHR’s Daniel Suarez for the final playoff berth. ▶▶ Denny Hamlin. No one has had more consistent speed in the second half of the season than Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin, one of several big-name drivers who has yet to find his way to Victory Lane at Indianapolis. Based on Hamlin’s performance as of late, this might be his best opportunity ever for a Brickyard breakthrough.

Simply A Perfect Strategy Menard Holds off Gordon for Brickyard 400 Win By Ben white
O
n July 31, 2011, Paul Menard, driver of the No. 27 RCR Enterprises Chevrolet, relied on stellar fuel mileage to win the precious Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Throughout the 160-lap event, five debris cautions covering 22 laps jumbled pit cycles, setting a variety of race strategies being used by the 43 teams in the field. After leading twice for 10 laps, Menard and crew chief Slugger Labbe settled into a rhythm of staying within striking distance of the leaders. Menard gave up the lead to defending race-winner Jamie McMurray, driver of the No. 1 Earnhardt Ganassi Racing

Chevrolet, on lap 151 in hopes of saving fuel. Menard retook the lead from McMurray with three laps remaining but were concerned that Jeff Gordon closing behind with fresh tires after pitting. Menard sealed the deal by concentrating on consistent driving while keeping Gordon at bay to record his only Cup series victory to date. “We had enough to get to the end, barely. I had to do a lot of (fuel) saving,” Menard said. “Slugger came on the radio and said that Jeff had fresh tires and he kept me up throughout the whole run where he was, but the last three laps he’s like, ‘It’s time to go. If we run out, we run out.’ We did have a good car and enough fuel.”

T
he fact that NASCAR’s most popular driver is only 23 years old says a great deal about the health of the sport as Chase Elliott sets the standard – both on and off the track – for a new generation of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series competitors. Born Nov. 28, 1995, Elliott is the son of Bill Elliott, the 1988 NASCAR Cup Series champion and a 16-time winner of the sport’s Most Popular Driver Award. Following in his father’s footsteps, Chase Elliott began racing a go-kart at age 8 and eventually advanced to the Late Model ranks. By age 16, he had recorded numerous victories, becoming the youngest driver to win several regional championships. In 2013, the Dawsonville, Georgia, resident completed the unofficial Grand Slam of Late Model racing when he became the first driver with wins in the All-American 400, World Crown 300, Winchester 400 and Snowball Derby. Elliott’s foray into NASCAR began when he signed a three-year

ean Hanrahan, shock specialist for Joe Gibbs Racing and driver Denny Hamlin, saw his first NASCAR race at Riverside, Calif., just before his 10th birthday in 1980. The resident of Southern California went there with his family at the invitation of a friend that had ties to one of motorsport’s greatest drivers. “We had a friend that worked with Dan Gurney and he invited us there,” Hanrahan said. “Gurney had raced there so it was a really big deal for us to go.” Hanrahan’s father raced in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America)

Upon graduation from high school, Hanrahan knew someone that owned and Indy Lights team and joined him as an employee. He swept floors, cleaned parts and ran errands for the team. “I did open wheel for a number of years while I was living in the Charlotte area,” Hanrahan said. “I wanted to make a change, and the Cup series seemed like the right thing to do. In 2014, I went to work for Michael Waltrip Racing.” After serving in various capacities, Hanrahan was given the duties of building with shocks on the No. 11 JGR Toyotas after working closely with the organization’s

It was the right thing to do.” During the week, Hanrahan works to make sure he has the right shock requirements for the respective track next on the schedule. Past information as well as discussions with fellow crew members provides those crucial answers. “We have such a data base concerning (chassis setups) used in the past,” Hanrahan said. “It’s about having everything in the computer system and following what we’ve done. The engineers come up with what they want and we talk about it.”

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.
Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. Magic Clear Lens is a cleaning, preservation, and maintenance treatment that instantly reveals a bright and clear headlight. Not only will your headlights look exceptionally better, but nighttime driving will be safer.

Leaving a Lasting Impresson Joey Gase making most of 2019 season By Joseph Wolkin
J
oey Gase joined MBM Motorsports with the goal of growing the organization. After a rough start to the year, team No. 35 is finally settling in, running inside the top-20 consistently. Now, he wants to end 2019 on a high note.
▶▶ What are your goals for the rest of the season? “If we can get a top 15, that would be really good for us. If we can get a bunch more top 20s, we’d be really happy with that. We have to execute everything, which can be tough as a small team. We’ve done that at times this year, and we’re starting to get on the same page.” ▶▶ What’s life like trying to pull double duty? “It’s a lot of work. You’re basically in the car non-stop that weekend. It’s fun when you do double duty because you get more experience on the track than a lot of other people do. You’re always learning about what the car and track does as it heats up.” 0 3 6

Q&A with NASCAR Legend
Bobby Allison by Ben White
D
ecades after he last turned the steering wheel of a race car, 1983 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Bobby Allison is still one of the sport’s most beloved competitors. Allison’s career came to an end four months after winning his third Daytona 500 when the longtime resident of Hueytown, Alabama, was involved in a near-fatal crash at Pennsylvania’s Pocono Raceway on June 19, 1988. The 2011 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee has remained close to the sport and at age 81 continues to make appearances at race tracks and venues across the country.
▶▶ When did you decide to drive race cars? My grandfather took me to a race when I was pretty young at a track near our home in Miami and I was hooked. I thought it was the neatest thing I had ever seen. When I got a little older, I raced my own car on tracks around the area but used the name Bob Sunderman, so my parents wouldn’t find out I was racing. When I started winning my photo was in the paper and my dad saw it. He told me if I was going to race I should use my own name. ▶▶ How was your first experience as a NASCAR Cup Series driver? It was known as Grand National then and I struggled the first few years to get going. By the mid-1960s, I was winning with my own Chevelle and showed I could run at the front and win. I started getting
0 3 8
indianapolis Preview: september 5, 2019
good rides and enjoyed some incredible success. I went back to racing my own modifieds and won championships with them before my Cup career really got going with my little Chevelle against the top teams. ▶▶ Your biggest victories came in the Daytona 500. What did winning that race three times mean to you? Winning the Daytona 500 was incredibly special to me. I started racing there in the early 1960s but just couldn’t seem to get a win in the 500 until I joined Bud Moore in 1978. Another win came in 1982 while with DiGard Racing. Then there was the 1988 win, but I honestly still don’t remember that race as a result of the Pocono crash. ▶▶ What does it mean to you to still have such a strong fan following? It’s incredibly special. I still spend a good deal of time signing autograph requests I get in the mail. I’ve always enjoyed meeting fans everywhere I go. It’s extremely important to appreciate the fans by allowing a photo to be taken or signing an autograph. I’m very thankful for my time as a NASCAR driver. The fans are what helped make my success in the sport possible.

Petty Wins 27 Races by ben white
I
n 1967, Richard Petty and his Petty Enterprises crew put together the most phenomenal season in NASCAR history. The driver from Level Cross, North Carolina, won 27 of 49 races, including 10 consecutively. During the 1967 NASCAR Cup Series season, Petty wheeled a solid blue 1967 Plymouth with the famed No. 43 on its doors and roof. The single car he and crew chief Dale Inman campaigned that season proved to be the most competitive piece of machinery to come out of the Level Cross, North Carolina, stable in the team’s illustrious 43year history. With the help of his father, Lee Petty, and his brother, Maurice, building the engines, Petty began the year with a victory in Augusta, Georgia. It proved to be a warm-up for what would become an amazing season. All told, Petty won 27 times on a variety of tracks. Petty and the No. 43 team were unstoppable from Aug. 12 to Oct. 1. The 10-race win streak began at
0 4 0
the famed quarter-mile Bowman Gray Stadium in WinstonSalem, North Carolina, and ended at North Wilkesboro Speedway. The streak included one win on a superspeedway, at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina on Sept. 4. Petty’s only other superspeedway win came at Rockingham Speedway on June 18. With so many victories to his credit that year, there was little doubt as to which driver would be crowned champion by season’s end. Petty’s closest rival in points was James Hylton, a former crewman for 1960 champion, Rex White, who wheeled the No. 48 Dodge for team owner Bud Hartje. Hylton was unable to score a victory, but finished consistently enough to take second-place prize money in the point standings.

Alan Kulwicki by ben white Alan Kulwicki entered his first NASCAR Cup Series race on Sept. 8, 1985, at Richmond Raceway in Virginia. All told, he competed in 207 Cup Series races, winning five times and recording 38 top-five finishes.
B
orn in Greenfield, Wisconsin, on Dec, 14, 1954, Kulwicki began racing go-karts at age 13. His father, Gerry Kulwicki, worked as an engine builder and crew chief for several USAC stock car racers, including Norm Nelson and Roger McCluskey. Kulwicki eventually moved from dirt to asphalt tracks, and in 1977 he claimed the Late Model championship at Wisconsin’s Slinger Super Speedway. That’s the same year he earned his mechanical engineering degree. In 1978, Kulwicki added Wisconsin International Raceway to his schedule and finished third in points during his rookie season at the track. Over the next two years, he won a pair of titles at WIR. By 1984, Kulwicki had realized his goal of racing in NASCAR, entering several events in what is now the NASCAR Xfinity Series. In 1985, he loaded

everything he owned onto a pickup truck and trailer and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, to pursue a career in the NASCAR Cup Series. Originally driving for Bill Terry while assembling Alan Kulwicki Racing, Kulwicki debuted his own car, the No. 35 Quincy’s Steakhouse Ford, on Aug. 31, 1986, at Darlington Raceway. He ended up making 23 starts that season and was named Rookie of the Year. From 1987 through 1991, Kulwicki claimed victories at ISM Raceway, Rockingham Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway as an owner/driver. Then, in 1992, victories at Bristol Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway paved the way for him to claim the NASCAR Cup Series championship. Sadly, Kulwicki died when his private plane crashed on April 1, 1993, near Bristol, Tennessee.

TM
msg: making racing safer By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down
0 5 6
indianapolis Preview: september 5, 2019
because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People
health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.
“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”

researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”

Surecan ▶▶ The award-winning SureCan was designed with all of your gas-powered machines in mind. With patented technology, the SureCan offers its user the best experience they have ever had with a fuel can. The flexible spout rotates down more than 180 degrees and fits perfectly into any machine’s fill location, while the thumb-release trigger on top controls the flow. By pulling straight back on the safety trigger and then down on the thumb button, fuel is released immediately while you stay in complete control. When you notice your tank is almost full, slowly release the thumb button and allow the excess fuel to drain from the top of the spout before rotating it back up. No more bending over, tipping your fuel can forward and holding it in an awkward position. The SureCan is a high-quality fuel dispensing machine. Learn more at surecanusa.com. 0 7 2

T
he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com
