he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

The End of the Jimmie Johnson Era in NASCAR In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp is back in his studio for a look at this weekend’s Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was the final race of the regular season, and there was no shortage of drama on the track. The biggest story that Eric breaks down from the weekend was that seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 and possibly one of the greatest NASCAR drivers of all time, has been eliminated from the playoffs. You’ll be hearing the phrase “end of an era” quite a bit over the next few

weeks, and Eric breaks down the context of why. But the day was bittersweet, as we also saw fanfavorite driver of the No. 43, Bubba Wallace, put in an astonishing performance on the track. Outside of the All-Star Race this year, this is Bubba’s best finish, and arguably his best performance, the entire season. And there’s plenty more behind that! Eric also breaks down the other drivers who made it into the playoffs, and he covers those who didn’t. And of course, where does Eric put the 2019 Brickyard 400 on the Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

Lessons learned at indianapolis LET THE DRAMA BEGIN The stakes ratchet up with the start of The Playoffs

A

t long last, the stage is set. With the conclusion of Sunday’s Brickyard 400 won by Kevin Harvick at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 16 drivers have punched their proverbial tickets into the playoffs and still harbor dreams of being crowned the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion. Here are five key takeaways from the 26th and final race of the regular season. By Jared Turner

It Just Wasn’t In The Cards For Jimmie Johnson

B

y all accounts, Jimmie Johnson has endured a rough season. However, hope sprang eternal for the seven-time champion entering Sunday’s regular season finale at Indianapolis where he was already a four-time winner. In all likelihood needing to win the race to secure a playoff berth, Johnson had a car that was fast enough to keep the front of the field in his sights, but any hopes of finding Victory Lane ended on lap 105 of 160 when his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet broke loose while running alongside teammate William Byron and then drifted up the track into the path Kurt Busch. Johnson collided with Busch and both drivers wrecked, ending Johnson’s day and leaving him devoid of playoff qualification for the first time since NASCAR added a season-ending playoff for its top series in 2004. “It’s really disappointing,” Johnson said. “Unfortunately, we had a bad 25 races that led to the position we were in here today.”

Brad Keselowski Is No Fan Of Indy’s Tire Barriers

B

rad Keselowski saw his hopes of consecutive Brickyard 400 wins go by the wayside when he collided with Erik Jones near the end of the first stage. It was what happened a few seconds later that really got Keselowski steaming, however. After both drivers hit the outside wall, Keselowski’s car slid down the track and clobbered a tire a tire barrier that covered a small portion of the inside wall. Keselowski’s machine came to rest with its two left wheels on the ground and its two right wheels off the ground and stuck to the barrier. To exit his badly damaged vehicle, Keselowski literally had to crawl out. “There is this spot on the wall with just an atrocious angle,” Keselowski said. “I don’t know what that spot is for, but it does not need to be there. This track really was part of the safety revolution (in NASCAR) about 15-20 years ago, and I think it is time for another.”

It Wasn’t A Thing Of Beauty, But Ryan Newman Took Care Of Business

R

yan Newman and Daniel Suarez arrived at Indianapolis deadlocked for the final spot in the 16-driver playoff field, meaning it was practically a coin toss as to which driver would advance out of the regular season finale with his championship hopes alive. Newman ultimately emerged with the upper hand by virtue of finishing eighth — three spots ahead of Suarez. “That was a struggle at a lot of times,” said Newman, whose No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford never paced the field. “We just stuck our nose to the grindstone. We didn’t have a fast enough race car to be able to go up there and lead.” Suarez, who was seeking to make the playoffs for the first time in three tries, admitted to feeling “a little disappointed.” The Stewart-Haas Racing driver then added: “I feel like our team has been okay this year, and we deserved to be in (the playoffs). We just weren’t good enough this weekend.”

For The First Time In A While, Bubba Wallace Showed His Potential

S

ince bursting onto the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series scene with a bang by finishing second in the 2018 Daytona 500 as a series rookie, Bubba Wallace was struggled mightily. In fact, the Richard Petty Motorsports driver went on to score just two more top-10 finishes — and no more top fives — in 2018. Prior to Sunday’s race at Indianapolis, Wallace had failed to post a single top-10 finish in any of this season’s 25 races. So finishing third at Indianapolis invoked some pretty awesome feelings for the popular young driver, who often wears his emotions on his sleeves. “Heck of a day,” Wallace said. “I don’t know what to say. It was just a solid day for our team. Smaller organizations having big runs, it is very uncommon these days. Almost like David and Goliath. Everything kind of clicked today for us. These little teams aren’t supposed to run with the big teams. It was a good day.”

Kevin Harvick Has Taken It To A Whole New Level

I

t took Kevin Harvick 20 races to finally find his way to Victory Lane in 2019. Since then, the 2014 NASCAR premier series champ has virtually taken up permanent residence there. With his win on Sunday at Indianapolis — where he captured his second Brickyard 400 but first as part of Stewart-Haas Racing — Harvick prevailed for the third time in seven outings. After being uncharacteristically mediocre for most of the regular season, Harvick has taken it up a notch at seemingly just the right time — heading into the playoffs. Sunday was his most dominant performance yet this season, as he started from the pole, led 118 of 160 laps and took the checkered flag more than six seconds ahead of the second-place driver. “These guys on this race team, they built a heck of a race car,” Harvick said. “This is the same stuff that we took to Michigan and had a real good weekend there, obviously, and went to Victory Lane.”

Jimmie Johnson Knocked Out of the NASCAR Playoffs We’re back with YouTuber Danny B Talks for another episode of his NASCAR news roundup show, Danny B Needs a Minute. This one is special, not just because its creator Daniel Baldwin’s birthday, but because he’s back in time for the end of the regular season. Of course one of the top stories Danny covers this week is that Jimmie Johnson, iconic driver of the No. 48, was eliminated from the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Many fans are calling it the end of an era, the Johnson era to be exact, and Danny B has his reaction. 0 1 8

indianapolis Rearview: september 9, 2019

He also brings us notice of the 2019 Most Popular Driver Award, this one sponsored by Hooters. Hooters also happens to be a sponsor of driver Chase Elliot, one of the long-running winners of the most popular driver award, so it seems especially fitting. There’s also a host of other stories on the docket this week - a new NASCAR-themed comedy show coming to streaming services? The future of up-and-coming driver Shane Lee? All that and more on this week’s episode of Danny B Needs a Minute!

Just Sayin’ It’s no longer a two-horse race for a championship between Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr.

No Clear Favorites Exist Heading Into These Playoffs By Jared Turner

T

hree months ago, identifying the heavyweights for the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship was easy. So easy, in fact, that some folks had — understandably — all but inscribed the name of Kyle Busch or Martin Truex Jr. on the championship trophy. How dominant were the two Joe Gibbs Racing teammates? Busch and Truex had combined to win exactly half of the season’s first 16 races, picking up four victories apiece. Now, we’re 26 races in, and the playoffs are about to start. How many wins have Busch and Truex amassed in the final 10 races leading up to the postseason? Try zero. Nil. None. Nada. Over the same stretch, meanwhile, Kevin Harvick has gone from being winless in 2019 to going to Victory Lane three times, while Denny Hamlin has won twice and actually matched the 2019 win total of Busch and Truex — his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates. Harvick looked downright spectacular to close out the regular season on Sunday at Indianapolis, but the Stewart-Haas Racing driver will start the playoffs seeded fourth out of 16 drivers.

0 2 0

indianapolis Rearview: september 9, 2019

Busch is the No. 1 seed, Hamlin is 15 points back in second, and Truex is third, a single point behind Hamlin and a point ahead of Harvick and reigning series champion Joey Logano. Busch’s advantage on second-place amounts to no more than the 15 points he earned for winning the “regular season championship.” Without this bonus, he and Hamlin would be deadlocked, with Truex, Harvick and Logano breathing down their necks, none of them trailing by more than two points. So what happened to the inevitable two-horse battle for the championship between Busch and Truex? Such an idea seems almost laughable now. In fact, based on how the summer stretch has gone, one could argue there’s at least 10 drivers with a legitimate title shot. Buckle your seatbelt; this championship battle is wide open.

Are You Not Entertained, NASCAR Fans? YouTuber Rusty Walrus is back with his reaction video to the Brickyard 400 at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This was a very special race, not just because it’s the final race of the 2019 season, and Rusty gives us the context behind what made this race so special. After Brad Keselowski’s showstopping crash early in the race, Rusty takes us through his eerie feeling he felt during the second stage. Conspiracies abounded amongst the fans on social media, with supposedly inconsistent cautions and regulation calls. 0 2 2

indianapolis Rearview: september 9, 2019

The weirdness only continued from there. Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Toyota blew an engine, taking him out of the race. Jimmie Johnson was knocked out, after going three wide with his teammate William Byron. But it isn’t all just recaps and reactions from Rusty. He also has some words for all the Jimmie Johnson fans who are, for the first time in many years, dealing with the disappointment of playoff elimination. What does it mean for the future of the sport? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

PEAK Series Takes on the Lady in Black First Round of Playoffs Ends in a Rumble By: M atteo M archeschi

O

n Tuesday, August 27th, the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze Series headed to The Lady in Black, better known as Darlington Raceway, to duke it out in the first round of its playoffs. JR Motorsports got its playoffs off to a strong start as driver Michael Conti started from the pole, with G2 eSports pilot and fellow playoff driver Keegan Leahy on his outside. Unfortunately for Conti, Leahy blew by him quickly and led until a lap 17 caution flag. Clint Bowyer Racing’s Nickolas Shelton beat Leahy and the rest of the field

0 3 0

off pit road, and led until lap 46, when Leahy flexed his long-run muscle by taking the lead back. Unfortunately for Leahy, the race didn’t come down to long runs. A lap 154 caution spoiled Leahy’s day. It came out during a round of green-flag pit stops, and Burton-Kligerman eSports driver Ashton Crowder had yet to pit, while Leahy had pitted, and had only just unlapped himself. Roush-Fenway Racing’s Zack Novak was awarded the free pass, and only ten cars remained on the lead lap. All of them pitted for fuel and tires when the caution came out, allowing

indianapolis Rearview: september 9, 2019

Crowder to maintain his lead. Another caution came quickly, allowing those that took the wave-around on the previous yellow to grab tires. The ensuing restart brought further chaos as Nickolas Shelton and Mode Motorsports driver Cody Byus made contact, collecting numerous others. Crowder, though, stuck it out and collected his first Peak Series victory at the Track Too Tough To Tame. Novak, Team Dillon eSports driver Benjamin Nelson, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Jake Nichols, and Leahy rounded out the top five. Because Crowder didn’t make the postseason, nobody was able to secure their position in the Final Four at Homestead. Keegan Leahy, though, made himself known, leading laps and nearly winning if not for that lap 154 caution. Even Ryan Luza, who dominated early in the season and was caught up in that late race pileup, has not had nearly the pace of Leahy recently. The Peak Series returns to the track at the Brickyard on Tuesday, September 10th, at 9 PM eastern time on iRacing’s Twitch channel and the iRacing eSports Network YouTube channel.

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.

Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. Magic Clear Lens is a cleaning, preservation, and maintenance treatment that instantly reveals a bright and clear headlight. Not only will your headlights look exceptionally better, but nighttime driving will be safer.

health and wellness

TM

msg: making racing safer By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down

0 6 0

indianapolis Rearview: september 9, 2019

because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People

health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.

“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”

An MSG Partner – Brain Armor Motorsports Safety Group is planning to partner with The Healthy Brain Co. on a mission to positively impact the health and wellness of the brain – 86 billion neurons at a time. Brain Armor products are clinically proven, evidencedbased nutritional formula designed for the sole purpose of building strong, healthy brains through

improved structural integrity and enhanced cognitive performance. Dr. Julian Bailes has helped design the product, which includes some of the most

indianapolis Rearview: september 9, 2019

researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”
