Silly Season, Secret Meetings, and Chastain’s New Ride In today’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all the hot storylines coming out of Talladega and heading into the upcoming race at Kansas this weekend. First up though, the final weeks of the playoffs also mean that silly season is upon us, and that means all manner of rumors, breaking news, and speculation. The top story out of it this week was the news that Ross Chastain has found himself a long term ride in the No. 10 for Kaulig Racing. Many fans expected him to opt for a Cup ride next year, but Eric talks us through how the decision 0 0 4

came down. Then Eric dives into the wild he said / she said storyline, or conspiracy theory depending on who you ask, about Chevy executives holding a secret meeting to lay down F1-like “team orders” for drivers in Chevy cars. What kind of impact does this have on the on-track product, how much do drivers have to listen to the manufacturer, and by the way, did it even happen? Eric breaks it down. There’s also news on Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Daniel Hemric, and more. Check out the episode to find out more!

t’s elimination time again. With two of three races complete in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Round of 12, only Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway stands between four drivers seeing their championship hopes dashed for 2019. Meanwhile, eight others will leave Kansas with their title hopes intact and headed for the Round of 8. Following are five things to watch for in the Hollywood Casino 400. By Jared Turner

or Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott, Clint Bowyer or William Byron to advance to the Round of 8, things are going to have to go really well on Sunday at Kansas Speedway. In fact, for any one of the four to reach the next round, they’re probably going to need to win. That’s how significant their respective deficits are on eighth-place Joey Logano, who currently holds the final transfer spot. Of course, a win by any playoff driver in any playoff round equals automatic entry into the next round, so you can throw out the math should Bowman, Elliott, Bowyer or Byron go to Victory Lane at Kansas. A win by any of the four, however, would guarantee that one of the drivers currently in positions 3-8 on the playoff grid doesn’t make it to the next round. Already locked into the Round of 8 are Kyle Larson and Ryan Blaney, winners of Race One and Race Two in the Round of 12, respectively.

Chase Elliott’s Bid To Repeat And Advance

N

o one needs a win at Kansas Speedway more than Chase Elliott, who is one of four drivers on the wrong side of the cutline entering Sunday’s playoff elimination race. For Elliott, that fact isn’t very comforting. Significantly more comforting for the driver of the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, however, is the fact that he’s the defending winner of the fall Kansas race. So, in other words, if Elliott simply does what he did last fall at the 1.5-mile track, he’ll be one of the eight drivers whose championship hopes are still alive at day’s end. While that might be easier said than done, Elliott isn’t throwing in the towel on reaching the next round. After all, he’s a threetime winner in 2019 and his most recent victory came in none other than the elimination race of the previous round, where he calmly and methodically battled back from an accident to find his way to Victory Lane on the notoriously challenging ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

Clint Bowyer’s Hometown Edge … Or Not

A

native of nearby Emporia, Kansas, Clint Bowyer very much considers Kansas Speedway — located about an hour and 45 minutes away in Kansas City, Kansas — to be a home game of sorts. Unfortunately, his results at the 1.5-mile track don’t back up the good vibes. Bowyer, a 10-time race winner in NASCAR’s premier series, is a disappointing 0-for-22 in premier series outings at his home track. As a matter of fact, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver has just three top-fives at Kansas — and two of those were fifth-place results. Oddly enough, Bowyer’s best career Kansas finish was a runner-up result that he posted all the way back in 2007 when he was a second-year premier series driver and competing for Richard Childress Racing. Ranked 11th among the 12 playoff drivers, Bowyer has never needed to win at Kansas more than he does on Sunday, when a victory — and probably nothing less — would propel him into the Round of 8.

Ryan Blaney And Kyle Larson On Cruise Control

N

o matter what happens on Sunday, Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson are going to be moving on to the Round of 8 by virtue of their wins the past two weekends at Talladega Superspeedway and Dover International Speedway, respectively. So while the 10 other title contenders sweat out Sunday’s race knowing that elimination looms as a possibility, Blaney and Larson will have no such worries. They can simply breathe easily in the knowledge that come heck or high water, they are moving on. Given their optimal situations, don’t be surprised if either Blaney or Larson goes for broke in pursuit of another victory. After all, a win on Sunday won’t have any bearing on whether they make the next round, but it would mean five additional playoff points to carry into the next round, and having those extra points would ultimately bolster their chances of qualifying for the season-ending Championship 4 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Kansas Chaos

C

onsisting of exactly a mile-and-a-half in length and featuring a wide racing surface replete with multiple grooves for passing, Kansas Speedway might appear to be one of the more forgiving tracks on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule. History has proven differently, however — especially when it comes to the fall playoff race at Kansas. Remember a few years back when Joey Logano wrecked Matt Kenseth while the two battled for the lead in the closing laps at Kansas? Kenseth — known to be a pretty mild-mannered guy — was so outraged that he deliberately wrecked Logano two weekends later at Martinsville, ultimately costing Logano a shot at victory that would have guaranteed him automatic entry into the Championship 4. And there have been other examples in recent years of drivers clashing at Kansas. Now that the track hosts not just a playoff race but an elimination race no less, you can expect the unexpected to go down on Sunday afternoon.

5 Ryan Blaney

By Jared Turner

Kyle larson

▶▶ ryan blaney. Seemingly out of nowhere, Ryan Blaney scored a thrilling victory on Monday at Talladega Superspeedway by nipping Ryan Newman at the finish line by a mere .007 seconds. In winning for the first time in 2019 and the third time in his career, Blaney punched his ticket to the Round of 8. Can he now go back-to-back?

drivers to watch at Kansas

▶▶ kyle larson. Known as one of the sport’s most skilled drivers on the intermediate tracks, Kyle Larson brings a strong history of success to Kansas Speedway. In 11 starts at the 1.5-mile facility, Larson has posted five finishes of eighth or better — four of them coming in last five Kansas outings. Already locked into the next round, Larson has plenty of good vibes surrounding him going into the weekend. ▶▶ alex bowman. Back in May at Kansas Speedway, Alex Bowman fell just short of a breakthrough first career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory after being passed by Brad Keselowski in the closing laps. Can the Hendrick Motorsports driver improve on that result by one position this weekend? He’s 18 points to the wrong side of the playoff cutline. ▶▶ ryan newman. Ryan Newman was denied a victory in the worst kind of way of Monday at Talladega when he finished all of .007 seconds behind race winner Ryan Blaney. You can rest assured that Newman — one of the sport’s most aggressive and most experienced drivers — will do everything he can to atone for his ‘Dega disappointment in the season’s final five races. ▶▶ chase elliott. Last fall at Kansas Speedway, Chase Elliott led 44 of 267 laps on the way to a popular victory in his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. The second-generation driver will likely need a similar kind of performance on Sunday to make it into the next playoff round.

Simply the Best Yarborough Collects Fourth Daytona 500 Win By Ben white

O

n Feb. 19, 1984, Cale Yarborough, driver of the Ranier-Lundy Racing No. 28 Chevrolet, collected his fourth career Daytona 500 victory and second consecutive win in NASCAR’s most prestigious event. He was the first driver since Glenn “Fireball” Roberts in 1962 to win a qualifying race, the pole position (201.848 mph) and the 500 during Speedweeks at Daytona. Yarborough, a three-time Winston Cup champion from Timmonsville, S.C., battled Bobby Allison in the opening laps and fended off challenges from Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, Harry Gant, Neil Bonnett and Bill Elliott for the victory. Yarborough followed Waltrip for 38 laps before making his signature pass on the backstretch on the final lap. It was Yarborough’s 79th of 83 career wins in a race that included 34 lead changes as well

as seven caution periods spanning 39 laps. Yarborough proved to be the class of the field in dominant fashion as predicted, leading 89 of 200 laps. Engine power provided by ace engine builder Waddell Wilson proved to be the advantage. Yarborough’s experience had taught him to wait patiently before dropping low for the lead. “I wanted to be in second place on the last lap,” Yarborough said in post-race interviews. “Once I got it, I held on to it until it was time to make my move. I’ve been perfecting it for a lot of years.”

While contending for the ARCA title, Christian Eckes (51) has made a handful for Truck Series starts.

in Pensacola, Florida. Eckes became part of Toyota’s Driver Development Program and posted his first ARCA Menards Series victory on April 22, 2018, at Indiana’s Salem Speedway while driving for Venturini Motorsports. He also made his NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series debut last season, wheeling a Kyle Busch Motorsports entry at Iowa Speedway. This year, Eckes has focused on the ARCA championship, running the full schedule of 18 races for the first time. He has also recorded three top10 finishes in six Truck Series appearances for KBM.

H

eading into this weekend’s season finale for the ARCA Menards Series at Kansas Speedway, 18-year-old Christian Eckes is locked in a torrid battle with Michael Self for the series championship. Born Nov. 10, 2000, in Middletown, New York, Eckes started his racing career in Bandoleros at the age of 9. He quickly worked through the various Bandolero divisions and graduated to Legend Car competition for the 2014 season. In 67 Legend Car starts that year, he recorded 25 victories with 63 top-10 finishes. Late Models were the next step in the career ladder as Eckes continued to hone his skills and he arrived on the national scene late in 2016 by winning three of the nation’s premier Late Model races, including the Myrtle Beach 400 at South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach Speedway and the Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway

crew member profile: Mike melton and mechanic as a career so I sold everything I owned and moved to North Carolina to work with a NASCAR team.” In 2010, Melton attended a pit crew school based in Mooresville, N.C. Knowing he was older than most just coming into the sport, he felt his mechanical experience and a commercial driver’s license made him a viable asset. He was hired by the school maintaining their cars before moving into NASCAR’s garage area. I was way too old to be fooling with that, but it was a way to get into the sport,” Melton said. “I relied on my background as a mechanic and always had my CDL, and that just kind

of got my foot in the door. One thing led to another.” His first official job as a crew member came with the Roulo Brothers Racing in the Menards ARCA Series in 2014. He also worked with TMG Racing, BK Racing and Hendrick Motorsports before coming to Wood Brothers Racing at the start of the 2019 season. Melton shares driving duties with fellow Wood Brothers driver Chad Kohn. “I do enjoy getting to see the country and going to all the places where we race,” Melton said. “It’s a long year but that probably the most enjoyable part of it. Plus we are all family here in the garage area.”

NASCAR Press release

Erik Jones was one of several drivers to visit with Michael Miller at Talladega.

Two Nights in Talladega The Ballad of Michael Miller

M

ichael Miller was born with cerebral palsy and periventricular leukomalacia. He’s mostly nonverbal, and uses a wheelchair to get around. His favorite sporting events are car and truck races. Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illnesses, teamed up with The NASCAR Foundation, Joe Gibbs Racing and Talladega Superspeedway, sending Michael to Talladega to experience races from the Monster Energy cup series and the Gander Outdoors Truck Series. Upon arrival, the family was greeted by a Joe Gibbs Racing concierge that helped guide the family through their fun-filled weekend. They first met NASCAR star Harrison Burton, who

gave Michael a signed 50year celebration hat. Before the start of the Sugarland Shine 250 Truck Race, the family visited the brand new Talladega garage experience that included race car galleries, food and games, and an open-air jumbotron viewing area. Michael’s favorite part of the garage experience was Iron Alley, a collection of race car galleries that gave him an up close and personal view of some of his favorite race cars, while the pit crews and drivers got ready for the big race. Michael also got a special inside look at some of the Joe Gibbs race car haulers, and saw Kyle Busch’s M&M car up close. The family also met Erik Jones, driver of the number 20

NASCAR Press release Toyota racer. Erik asked Michael if he “liked to go fast” and Michael smiled. The next day was the 1000Bulbs.com 500 stock car race. The family watched the race from the grandstands and had amazing seats close to the track. Michael had an exciting time and smiled with glee every time the cars zoomed by. The family had a blast watching the first stage. Later stages of the race were postponed due to bad weather, yet the family’s spirits were cheerful, and they were invited to attend the race the following day. “We’re just so happy we got to be there. Just seeing his excitement was my favorite part,” said Michael’s mom Amanda. “A special thanks to NASCAR, Joe Gibbs

MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven

0 5 8

Kansas Preview: October 17, 2019

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and

health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate

Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

0 6 0

Kansas Preview: October 17, 2019

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
