William Byron, Clint Bowyer & Alex Bowman Went Down Swinging
T
heir championship hopes on life support coming into Sunday’s elimination race at Kansas Speedway, William Byron, Alex Bowman and Clint Bowyer needed to do something really special to give themselves a fighting chance to advance to the Round of 8. But while all three drivers performed reasonably well at Kansas, none of the three had quite enough speed or luck to put themselves in position to reach the next round. Byron ultimately finished best among the three, crossing the finish line in fifth. Bowyer and Bowman came home eighth and 11th, respectively. While it wasn’t the outcome that any of the three drivers wanted, they knew that that odds were stacked against them when they arrived at Kansas. “It’s just a bummer,” Byron said. “But we had a great run today, and we can take pride in that, for sure. It was fun, but we just needed to win, and we couldn’t do that.”

Kyle Busch Is Back On Top But Isn’t The Favorite
W
ith the standings reset after Kansas to reflect playoff points earned up to this point in the season, Kyle Busch is back on top by virtue of amassing more playoff points than any other driver. Busch, however, remains unsatisfied with his recent performance — despite finishing third at Kansas. The reality is that it’s been some fourth months since he last visited a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Victory Lane. To win the championship or even make it through the Round of 8 and into the Championship 4 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Busch believes he and his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team will likely need to take it up a notch. The good news for Busch is that he believes he and his team — which won four of the season’s first 14 races — are capable of elevating their game. “We’re on to the next round, so it’s good in the big picture of things,” he said. “We can win at all the tracks that are in the next round.”

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

Brad Keselowski Failed To Seize The Moment
H
eading into Sunday’s elimination race, Brad Keselowski was on fairly solid footing to advance to the next round of the playoffs. But at day’s end, the 2012 series champ found himself on the outside looking in, missing the final transfer spot by three points after finishing 19th. It was a disappointing ending to a disappointing afternoon for Keselowski, whose Ford never showed a lot of speed. Despite being on fresh tires, Keselowski lost six positions following the final restart with two laps to go, and that was ultimately the difference between reaching the Round of 8 and having to wait until 2020 to race for a championship. “I pushed as hard as I knew how and didn’t quite do good enough on the last restart, and that was it,” Keselowski said. “We clawed as hard as we could, and there were times it looked like we were going to be fine and times it didn’t. In the end, it didn’t work out.”

Chase Elliott Rose To The Occasion When It Counted
A
ware that he likely needed to win Sunday’s race at Kansas to transfer into the Round of 8, Chase Elliott understood the magnitude of the task at hand. Fortunately for him, a secondplace finish turned out to be all that was required. Taking advantage of Brad Keselowski’s lowly 19th-place finish, Elliott leapfrogged the Team Penske driver in the standings to grab the eighth and final transfer spot for the next round. Although Elliott regretted being unable to catch race winner Denny Hamlin in the final two-lap dash to the checkered flag, knowing he will remain in the hunt for his first premier series championship was enough to put a smile on his face. “I’m just proud of the effort today,” the second-generation driver said. “I’m just excited we get to fight another race. With our backs up against the wall here and to battle for a win, that’s what you have to do when you’re in the position that we were in.”

Denny Hamlin Is In Championship Form
D
enny Hamlin’s stellar 2019 continues. Armed with a dominant car for Sunday’s elimination race at Kansas, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver led 153 of 277 laps on the way to his fifth victory of the season. In the process, Hamlin clinched an automatic berth in the Round of 8 — from which he hopes to become one of four drivers who will have the opportunity to compete straight up for the championship in the season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. After spending most of the season’s first half in the shadows of fellow Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr., Hamlin has come on strong in the season’s second half and now trails only Truex — who owns a series-high six victories — in the win column. Hamlin will start out the Round of 8 ranked third in the standings, trailing only Busch and Truex, as the series heads to Martinsville Speedway — one of Hamlin’s favorite and best racetracks.

Just Sayin’ The final field of eight drivers includes four former champions.
ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN A star-studded field of eight makes prognosticating difficult
By Jared Turner
T
he big dogs are about to hunt. With the stage now set for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ Round of 8, any fair-minded observer would be hard-pressed to say that any one of the eight remaining championship contenders is incapable of making it into the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway and ultimately leaving South Florida with the trophy in hand. Oh, sure, there’s no denying the fact that the three Joe Gibbs Racing drivers — Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin — are the championship favorites. Likewise, there’s no denying that Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson — the two drivers currently pulling up the playoff caboose — are the underdogs. But in a sport where momentum means an awful lot, Blaney and Larson possess a ton of it, having each won a race in the Round of 12 and in so doing gained automatic entry into the Round of 8. Sitting between the JGR trio the two youngsters in the newly revised standings are reigning series champion Joey Logano, 2014 champ Kevin Harvick and the sport’s most popular driver, Chase Elliott. All three of those guys have won multiple races this season,
0 1 8
Kansas rearview: October 21, 2019
and, while not as dominant or consistently fast as the JGR boys, have the ability to flex their muscle when it matters most. Of the eight drivers who remain in the championship hunt, four (Busch, Truex, Harvick and Logano) are former champions, while five of them (Busch, Truex, Harvick, Logano and Hamlin) have made previous appearances in the Championship 4. Up next is Martinsville Speedway, a .526-mile paperclip-shaped track where staying out of trouble and keeping all four fenders on the car is as instrumental to success as having the speed to contend for the victory. Coincidentally, Truex — the driver arguably considered the championship favorite — has never won at Martinsville. Buckle your seatbelt; these last four races are going to be quite the ride.

“Somethings up with Bowman” at Kansas and More Rusty Walrus is back with his reaction to the crazy action at the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway. The number one storyline going into this weekend’s race was, of course, the playoffs and the cutoff line. The way it shook out has Rusty absolutely reeling. First up, there was Alex Bowman. “Somethings up with Bowman,” Rusty says, and after his performance this weekend, and really all season long, it’s no wonder Rusty has so much to say about it. Understanding the 0 2 0

pressure and the immense amount of attention Bowman is getting is just the start of it. Then he turns to Brad Keselowski. After he won Kansas back in the spring, it was assumed he’d show up for the playoff race looking to play it safe, deliver consistency, or something along those lines for a serious contender. That didn’t happen, and Rusty tells us all about. All of that, plus of course his reaction to the shocking finish with Denny Hamlin in this week’s episode of the Rusty Report.

The broadcast was part of NASCAR America on NBC Sports Network. The crew had clearly done their research, and the production quality was solid. Each of the final four drivers had “in-car cameras,” also known as facecams in the gaming world, which they showed periodically throughout the broadcast. They also discussed each of their backgrounds, which was especially interesting, since it can be hard, if not impossible, to catch a glimpse of the people behind the screens. This is one feature that should definitely carry
PEAK on NBC Shows the Power of Esports More to Come in the Future? By: M atteo M archeschi Last week’s eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series Finale was an absolute thriller, as Zack Novak and Keegan Leahy battled it out to the final lap, with Novak coming away with the title. much as possible, especially if it were to get its entire 2020 campaign televised. Sure, it can be fun to bring up the novelty of virtual racing every once in a while, but that novelty will eventually wear out, and when it does, the series should have dug its roots deep enough to have some staying power in the motorsports community. If the series is able to gain a full-season TV deal for 2020, that would be huge for the eSports world as well as the motorsports world, and it would do a great deal to help eSports take root in the motorsports sphere. If the series finale was any indication, the Peak Series has an incredibly bright future in front of it.

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.
Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. Magic Clear Lens is a cleaning, preservation, and maintenance treatment that instantly reveals a bright and clear headlight. MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven
0 5 6

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and
health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate
Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
