New Package is a Special Delivery at Kansas

W

hile the NASCAR package is hotly debated almost every week, no one was really expecting such a racing experience out of this week’s Digital Ally 400 in Kansas. In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp, takes us through the results from Kansas. The package has seen before, at Las Vegas and Texas most notably, where it showed great results with the on-track product. Most observers were likely predicting a repeat of Texas, with both that track and Kansas being relatively new re-pavings, and both offering a similar style of 1.5 mile track racing. But the racing wasn’t only good because of the

hardware. From a fan’s perspective, the drivers themselves really came alive on the track. Alex Bowman and Chris Buescher, both up and comers with a cult fan following, finished in the Top 10. For Bowman, this is his third 2nd place finish in a row. Even the driver that the others fear most on the 1.5 at Kansas, Kevin Harvick, wasn’t allowed to dominate in his usual fashion. And the other dominator this season, Kyle Busch, was similarly waylayed with a pit box violation. So how did the Kansas rate on Eric’s Groovy Gauge? How did it compare to the spectacular racing we just saw at Talladega? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out.

n a race that winner Brad Keselowki called “gritty,” the 2012 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion sprung to life just in the nick of time. Keselowski passed Alex Bowman for the lead with 11 laps to go and held on to win Saturday night under the lights at Kansas Speedway. Here are five key takeaways from the race. By Jared Turner

Alex Bowman Is So Close To Winning He Can Taste It

G

ood luck finding a driver who’s running any better than Alex Bowman, who has now finished second three races in a row. At Kansas, he led 59 laps and spent a good portion of the race looking like the driver to beat. Although Bowman wasn’t able to hold off a resurgent Brad Keselowski in the end, it was a great night for the youngster, who continues to impress in a big way in his second season as the full-time driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet made famous by Dale Earnhardt Jr. For Bowman, winning is so close that he can now taste it. “Really proud of everybody at Hendrick Motorsports,” Bowman said. “Our race cars are so much better than what we started the year. Wish we were standing here with three wins in a row and things could have gone differently and that could be the case, but we’ll keep digging.”

Clint Bowyer & Erik Jones Won’t Be Exchanging Christmas Cards

A

ngry about an aggressive blocking move by Erik Jones with a lap to go at Kansas, Clint Bowyer confronted Jones after race and didn’t mince words in giving his viewpoint of the near disaster, which Bowyer blamed for costing him several positions at the checkered flag. “We should have finished second,” Bowyer said after bringing his No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford home in the fifth position and two spots behind Jones. “I had a huge run … but that kid, I guess he was willing to wreck himself to hold the position. That wasn’t very smart. If it had been another scenario where I would have had some room I would have just turned him in front of the whole field and he would be back there wishing he wouldn’t have done that. Oh well.” Jones, not surprisingly, had a different take. “I think it was just racing,” he said.

The 2019 Aero Package Has Real Potential, After All

A

nyone who watched the final laps of Saturday night’s race at Kansas had to walk away believing the much-maligned 2019 aero package has a lot more potential than some have suggested. A week after multiple competitors ripped the new package on the heels of a hohum race at 1-mile Dover, the 2019 aero rules seemed to play much better on the mile-and-a-half Kansas layout, where the racing intensified dramatically in the closing laps as drivers in the front group of cars enjoyed little separation from each other. Late-race highlights included a close battle for the lead between teammates Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott, an aggressive three-wide pass for the lead by Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and an impressive surge to victory by Brad Keselowski. “This was an awesome race,” Keselowski said. “This rule package is really made for tracks like Kansas Speedway, and I think the fans saw a great one today.”

Kyle Busch’s Top-10s Streak Was Destined To End

A

fter a record-tying streak of 11 consecutive top-10 finishes to open the season, Kyle Busch was unable to break the record and keep the streak going on Saturday night at Kansas Speedway. Busch, whose No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was fast, finished 30th on the heels of a late-race pit road penalty that culminated in a tire failure resulting from contact with another car while he frantically tried to race his way back to the front. Perhaps it’s fitting that Busch’s streak of top 10s ended at Kansas. After all, he has just one Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory at the 1.5-mile venue, which has historically been one of his toughest tracks. If there’s any good news to be had for Busch, it’s that he remains well-positioned for a potential deep run in the playoffs and is headed to Charlotte Motor Speedway — where he won last year’s Coca-Cola 600.

Brad Keselowski Saved His Best For Last

B

rad Keselowski didn’t have the best car for most of Saturday night’s race at Kansas Speedway. When it mattered most, however, Keselowski’s No. 2 Team Penske Ford took off like a rocket ship. After capping a late-race surge to the front with a pass on Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman for the lead, Keselowski then managed to hold the field at bay in a green-white-checkered finish that bunched the field together and gave his challengers one final shot to make something happen. “That (last) restart, we just got a great launch,” said Keselowski, who snatched his third victory in 12 starts this season. “Alex Bowman, I’ll tell you, he’s going to win a race. He did a great job today. We had a little bit fresher tires than he did and we were able to make the move on the outside there and just caught everything perfect, and I’m so thankful.”

Just Sayin’ Darrell Wallace Jr. has shared his struggles with depression with the media.

Bubba Wallace’s Candor Is Refreshing And Much-Needed By Jared Turner

A

lready one of NASCAR’s most likeable and popular drivers, Bubba Wallace bore his soul to reporters and — by extension — the entire NASCAR world during a candid interview on Friday at Kansas Speedway. Wallace, who is in his second season as driver of the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Chevrolet, wept openly as he talked about how he’s been going through a tough time recently both on the track and away from it. Of course, this isn’t the first time Wallace has wore his emotions on his sleeve during a media availability; he did the same after finishing second in the 2018 Daytona 500. On that day, he broke down into tears as he recalled his difficult road to reach such a point in his career. Wallace’s Kansas revelation came just two days after posting a smiling photo of himself on Twitter with text that read: “Ha. With a laugh and smile like this every week

0 1 8

Kansas rearview: May 13, 2019

you’d think there is no way one could mask so much negative and dark (poop). Lonely dark roads ain’t fun, keep on keeping on I guess.” While the entire racing world certainly hopes that Wallace is able to quickly work through whatever difficulties he is facing, this much is also true: It’s refreshing to see a driver be so open and transparent with his thoughts and feelings. Too often these days, drivers would rather rattle off a list of sponsors and give a prepackaged quote than say what they are truly thinking and feeling. As a result, the sport has suffered. Let’s hope that the way of Bubba Wallace becomes the way his competitors. It’s time for drivers to stop hiding behind a PR mask and to just come clean and be real. Such candor will only endear them to fans and make the sport better in the long run.

NASCAR eSports Tuesday’s race, including points leader Michael Luza, who qualified outside the top 10, and wrecked early, ending his race. This same wreck took out the Renegades’ Corey Vincent. A separate wreck involved polesitter Keegan Leahy, but he was able to finish 29th, one lap down. Peak races typically have very few DNFs, so the four in Tuesday’s race were fairly surprising, especially with such big names involved. At the front, it would be Zack Novak, Garrett Lowe, Blake Reynolds, Michael Guest, and Nick Ottinger. With the top two both having issues, Novak ascended

the standings up to third with his victory, behind Luza and Leahy, respectively, one point behind Leahy, and another 40 behind Luza. Third-place finisher Reynolds now sits fourth in points, 11 behind Novak, on the strength of a pair of top five finishes in seven races. The Peak series will be back on track again for round eight, which will take place at Charlotte Motor Speedway at 9 PM eastern time on May 21st. As will all Peak races, it can be viewed on iRacing’s Twitch channel and the iRacing eSports Network YouTube channel.

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

0 2 8

Kansas rearview: May 13, 2019

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”

The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. NASCAR PETS

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner

L

ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

0 5 2

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
