Kentucky’s Racing Turns Brother Against Brother In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp brings us the rundown and review of this weekend’s race at Kentucky. And if the reaction on social media didn’t fill you in, this video certainly will - Kentucky was a wild race! The takeoff story from the weekend will be Kurt Busch, who took home his first win of the season. The win is being talked about as a redemption story from last week’s loss at Daytona. With pit strategy playing such a major role in Kentucky’s racing, it was not clear if Kurt would repeat his mis-timed pit stop from last week. But even the pit strategy wasn’t the full story,

0 0 4

kentucky rearview: July 15, 2019

as Kurt Busch found himself battling a familiar face, brother Kyle Busch, for the win. While both Busch brothers are considered some of the most highly skilled drivers in the game, it’s a rare occasion to see them battling it out so fiercely with each other. But that wasn’t all. Kentucky’s field was changing all night, with drivers falling back and climbing their way back up all night. What became of pole sitter Daniel Suarez? Whither Kevin Harvick in the Top 20? And how did Kentucky rank on the Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

hot, entertaining night at Kentucky Speedway culminated with brothers Kurt and Kyle Busch going toe-to-toe for the victory and older brother Kurt ultimately edging his sibling at the checkered flag to score his first win of the 2019 season and clinch an automatic berth in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Here are five takeaways from the Quaker State 400: By Jared Turner

It’s Getting Crowded Near The Playoff Cutline

W

ith seven races to go until the 16-driver field is set for the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, it’s becoming increasingly crowded near the final transfer spot. With a pivotal fourth-place finish in Saturday night’s race at Kentucky Speedway, 13th-place Kyle Larson now has a reasonably comfortable 40-point buffer over the first driver on the wrong side of the cutline, but Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson are tied for 14th in the standings and sit just eight points ahead of Erik Jones — who would be the last driver to earn a spot in the playoffs if the playoff field was locked in today. Meanwhile, just two points behind Jones is 17th-place Ryan Newman, followed closely by Daniel Suarez another two points back. While anything could happen over the next seven weeks, it appears to be shaping up like essentially a five-way battle among Bowyer, Johnson, Jones, Newman and Suarez for the final three playoff berths.

The Final Caution Was Joey Logano’s Undoing

O

ut front, pulling away and cruising toward an almost sure-fire third win of the 2019 season, Joey Logano saw it all come unraveled in a split second at Kentucky when a late-race spin by Bubba Wallace erased his comfortable lead and set up a green-white-checkered finish. Then, on the ensuing restart, Logano couldn’t hang onto the lead and ultimately fell from first to seventh in the final two laps. It was a tough finish to an otherwise promising night for the reigning Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion, who led 19 laps in his No. 22 Team Penske Ford. “The caution came out at the wrong time,” said Logano, who had wrestled the lead away from Kyle Busch and put considerable distance between himself and the Joe Gibbs Racing driver when the caution flag waved. “It happens. It is frustrating when you are fast enough to win and you don’t win.”

Kurt Busch Is A Championship Darkhorse

O

ne driver perhaps overlooked all season as a serious championship consider, Kurt Busch went a long way toward changing that perception with a come-from-behind victory on Saturday night at Kentucky, where he led 41 laps in his No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet and captured the victory with a thrilling last-lap pass of his brother, Kyle. While Busch hasn’t had the fastest car this season, he’s enjoyed a solid first year with the Ganassi organization, having recorded 11 top-10 finishes in 19 starts. Now, with his win at Kentucky, he’s locked into the playoffs and hungry for more in the second half of the season. “I’m pumped up about the second half,” Busch said after winning at Kentucky. “We still know we need to improve in some certain areas. This is a perfect feather in the cap. We started the second half this weekend, and we knew that we wanted to ramp it up, and today we’re winners.”

Kyle Wasn’t Willing To Wait Around For Kurt

K

yle Busch didn’t win the race to the checkered flag against brother Kurt at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday night, but the Joe Gibbs Racing driver was determined to win the race back home to Charlotte, North Carolina. Plans for the two siblings to fly home together were scrapped when Kurt had to stay longer to fulfill post-race media obligations on the heels of his narrow victory over Kyle. “I was supposed to fly home with him, and now I’m looking for a plane ride,” Kurt said. “So that’s Kyle. He won’t even wait. We shared a plane ride earlier this year. I think it was Phoenix where he won, and I had to sit there and wait for him to do his little Victory Lane thing. It’ll be fine. We’re going over to his house tomorrow, actually, for a little get together on a Sunday off, and I’m going to plop the trophy down right on his kitchen counter.”

The Busch Boys Gave Everyone ‘A Thriller’

A

s compelling finishes go, you couldn’t have asked for one much more compelling than what fans witnessed on Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway, where brothers Kurt and Kyle Busch engaged in an epic last-lap battle for the victory. Older brother Kurt ultimately got the upper hand, beating his younger sibling to the finish line by a scant .076 seconds to capture his first win of the season. Afterward, the two ruminated on a night that they will undoubtedly never forget. “I’m glad it was a thriller,” Kyle said. “It’s just unfortunate we were on the wrong end of the deal.” Kurt, of course, couldn’t have been any happier with how the final lap played out. “He gave me just enough room, as a true racer would or as my little brother would,” he said. “But I’m really proud of the way that we finished this race 1 2 and put on one hell of a show.”

Just Sayin’ Kurt Busch is one of NASCARS longest tenured drivers

NASCAR Would Benefit From Kurt Busch Returning In 2020 By Jared Turner

W

hen Kurt Busch signed with Chip Ganassi Racing ahead of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season, both parties openly acknowledged that their agreement was for one season only. Busch, who turns 41 years old on August 4, also admitted that he was considering the possibility of walking away from the sport altogether at season’s end. But after punching a ticket into the 2019 playoffs with an electrifying drive to victory on Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway where he nipped younger brother Kyle at the checkered flag, Kurt sounds quite open to the possibility of returning to the Monster Energy Series — and Chip Ganassi Racing — for at least one more season. “For me, it’s a matter of just having the dominos line up and everything falling together to make it happen,” Kurt said. “This No. 1 team is a powerful team, and it would be stupid not to keep this group together, and that’s part of my leverage. But at the end of it, we just want to make it work for all parties.” Let’s hope the various

0 1 8

kentucky rearview: July 15, 2019

parties can come to an agreement and that Busch sticks around for 2020 and possibly even longer. While Busch has never been one of the sport’s most popular drivers, the loud chorus of cheers that the 2004 series champion received after his win on Saturday night serves to illustrate that he’s clearly made tremendous strides toward repairing his once-soiled reputation. It certainly doesn’t hurt that he’s now one of the sport’s oldest active drivers, having made his debut in NASCAR’s premier series back in 2000. After losing the likes of Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards to retirement over the past few years, NASCAR needs as many of its big names as possible to hang for as long as they can. Busch is one of them.

Novak Finishes Strong Amid Carnage PEAK Takes First Green and White Flag at Kentucky By M atteo M archeschi

O

n Tuesday, July 9th, the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series headed to the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway for the series’ eleventh round of action. Sonoma winner Bobby Zalenski captured his third consecutive pole, and led until lap 43, when independent driver Taylor Hurst took the lead away after Zalenski made a scheduled green flag pit stops. Several laps later, the yellow flew after Ashton Crowder of Burton Kligerman

0 2 6

eSports and the independent Logan Kress came together, sending both spinning in turn four. Hurst was on pit road at the time, but was able to stay on the lead lap and inherited the lead. The ensuing restart was intense, with three and fourwide racing throughout the pack, but it was Jimmy Mullis of Richmond Raceway eSports who came out with the lead. Mullis led 39 laps en route to a runner-up finish. Mullis’

kentucky rearview: July 15, 2019

downfall was Zack Novak, who elected to pit late, and used his newer tires to shoot straight to the lead. Novak didn’t have it easy, though, as Chris Shearburn of Letarte eSports brought out the yellow with about 10 laps remaining. Novak’s restart was impressive, but another caution came out as Ray Alfalla and Nickolas Shelton came together, collecting Adam Benefiel, among others. This caused the Peak Antifreeze Series’ first ever green-white-checkered finish. Novak, though, didn’t back down, and held his lead, capturing his third win of the season. The Roush-Fenway Racing driver is now fifth in points, only 39 points behind leader Keegan Leahy. The eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series returns on Tuesday, July 23, at 9 pm eastern time, for its 12th round, this time at the tricky triangle of Pocono Raceway. The race can be seen on iRacing’s Twitch channel and on the iRacing eSports Network YouTube channel.

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

0 3 0

kentucky rearview: July 15, 2019

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”

The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Dr. Cormier is a member of the American Association of

Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His busy practice involves performing complex brain and spinal operations on patients from around the country that seek out his surgical acumen.

Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner

N

ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side. Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.” Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance. “I always had a beagle growing up, and when I

0 5 2

kentucky rearview: July 15, 2019

was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.” Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free. “They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said. “They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com
