he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

Eric’s Complete 2019 NASCAR Playoff Predictions In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp is counting down his complete predictions for the 2019 NASCAR Playoffs. Who will be knocked out, what round will they be knocked out of, and who has what it takes to make it all the way? Let’s find out where Eric is at. This year’s playoffs will be especially important, with legendary driver of the No. 48 Jimmie Johnson being eliminated after last week’s race at the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis. Fans are calling it the end of an era, with Johnson having made it into the

playoffs every year since its inception. Until now. The playoff roster is looking a little younger this year, with fan favorites Chase Elliot (in the No. 9) and Alex Bowman (in the iconic No. 88) both representing. Both Busch brothers, Kyle and Kurt, are also present, along with Ryan Blaney. Who will make it to the final round, and who will take home the championship? Could we see a final four made up entirely of one team, like Joe Gibbs Racing? Eric breaks down all of his predictions, watch the episode to find out!

et the craziness begin. If the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ 26-race regular season was the dress rehearsal, then the season-ending 10-race playoff is certainly the main event — and it all begins with the running of Sunday’s South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Following are five things to watch for as the playoffs get rolling this weekend in Sin City. By Jared Turner

An Increased Level Of Intensity

T

he pregame show is over. It’s time to get down to business. Not that the 26-race regular season didn’t matter, of course. It mattered greatly in terms of which drivers ultimately qualified for the playoffs. But now that the playoffs are here, the intensity it about to ratchet up to a whole new level, due in large part to the elimination-style format that has been part of the playoffs for NASCAR’s top division since 2014. Simply put, there are 16 playoff drivers. Four of them will be eliminated from title contention at the conclusion of each round of three races, leaving just four drivers left to race straight up for the championship in the season-ending race. Needless to say, no one wants to be eliminated, and many drivers and teams will stop at nothing to keep their title hopes alive. Therefore, the pressure on the championship-contending teams will be palpable beginning with Sunday’s race at Las Vegas.

More Of The Same From JGR

J

oe Gibbs Racing was from top to bottom the most dominant organization of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series regular season. Along with putting all four of its drivers in the playoffs, JGR went to Victory Lane with all four drivers, who combined to win 13 of 26 races. Now that the playoffs are here, there’s simply no reason to expect anything less from JGR than what the organization accomplished during the regular season. The far bigger question is whether JGR’s Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. can regain the frontrunning form they had through early summer before cooling off a bit. By virtue of being the “regular season champion,” Busch begins the playoffs as the points leader. Truex is seeded third among the 16 championship hopefuls. Their two other JGR teammates — Denny Hamlin and Erik Jones — have actually gained momentum in recent weeks and could influence the championship battle more than most prognosticators originally expected.

The Possibility Of A Spoiler

I

t’s a somewhat common occurrence for at least one non-playoff driver to score a victory during the 10-race playoff stretch. After all, non-playoff drivers still make up more than half of the field. But which driver outside the top 16 is most capable of playing the role of spoiler and stealing a win from his championship-contending counterparts? After missing the playoffs by a superslim margin and being the first driver on the wrong side of the cutline, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Daniel Suarez would no doubt love to steal some thunder from those who qualified to be in title contention. Equally motivated to not go quietly is Jimmie Johnson, the seven-time NASCAR premier series champion who missed the playoffs for the first time in his illustrious career. Johnson has been faster in recent weeks under the guidance of new crew chief Cliff Daniels and desperately doesn’t want to go a second full season without a trip to Victory Lane.

Some Vegas Dice Rolling

L

as Vegas — aka “Sin City” — is the gambling capital of the world. So, will drivers and teams be inclined to roll the dice in Sunday’s playoff opener? The short answer is yes and no. While drivers such as points leader Kyle Busch, second-place Denny Hamlin, third-place Martin Truex Jr. and fourth-place Kevin Harvick don’t have a compelling reason to try anything too crazy, the idea of rolling the dice has a lot more upside for drivers in the back half of the playoff field who have some ground to make up if they want to advance beyond the first round. Of course, the simplest way to make it out of the Round of 16 and into the Round of 12 is by winning one of the three races in the opening round, as a victory punches an automatic ticket forward in the playoffs, regardless of where a driver sits in the standings at the conclusion of a round.

A Red-Hot Kevin Harvick

N

o driver has been hotter over the past two months than Kevin Harvick, who has rolled up three wins in the past seven races after going winless over the season’s first 19 races. Harvick enters the playoffs on the heels of a particularly dominant outing last weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway where his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford won from the pole and led a race-high 118 of 160 laps. Harvick is a virtual staple of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ Championship 4, having been one of the four championship finalists in all but one of the five years since NASCAR instituted a season-ending, winner-take-all championship race for its premier series. No matter what kind of regular season Harvick has, the 2014 champ seems to always save his best for the final 10 weeks when it matters most. Based on how he’s trending, it’s a good bet this year will be no exception.

drivers to watch at las vegas

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kevin harvick. Buoyed by three victories in the past seven races, Kevin Harvick comes into the playoffs with a wind at his back. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver has also won two of the last six races at Las Vegas, which makes him the clear favorite heading into the weekend. ▶▶ Brad keselowski. Brad Keselowski is no stranger to Victory Lane at Las Vegas. In fact, the Team Penske driver has been almost unstoppable at the 1.5-mile track in recent years. Keselowski has captured three of the past seven Monster Energy Series events in Sin City. ▶▶ Joey Logano. Joey Logano is looking to complete the season sweep at Las Vegas after winning here for the first time in the spring. A Logano victory this weekend would be the third in a row for Team Penske at LVMS and jumpstart Logano’s quest for back-to-back Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championships. ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Kyle Busch recorded his lone Las Vegas win to date in 2009. However, LVMS will always hold special meaning for Busch, as it’s his home track. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver hasn’t won since June and would love nothing more than to return to Victory Lane with a win at his stomping grounds. ▶▶ Paul Menard. Paul Menard announced this past week that he is retiring from Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series competition at season’s end. So that means Menard has 10 more opportunities to deliver the Wood Brothers their landmark 100th NASCAR premier series victory. Looking for a playoff spoiler? Try Menard.

Winning for ‘The King’ Almirola’s Biggest Win Came at Daytona By Ben white

O

n July 6, 2014, Aric Almirola, driver of the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford, mastered a very wet day at Daytona International Speedway to record his first-career Monster Energy Cup Series victory in the Coke Zero 400. Two major crashes took many favorites out of contention on laps 21 and 99 in the rain-shortened event. The win while driving the iconic No. 43 machine came on the 30th anniversary of team owner Richard Petty’s 200th Cup victory on the 2.5-mile track. Almirola spent his afternoon dodging bent metal awhile remaining in striking distance of the top 10. During the 106th

0 2 0

Las Vegas Preview: september 12, 2019

lap, Almirola slipped past Kurt Busch, driver of the StewartHaas Racing Chevrolet. Brian Vickers, driver of the Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota, also slipped past Busch to take second. During the 112th lap, Almirola led the remaining cars in the field to pit road when a third heavy rain storm forced an end to the race. “That was a crazy race,” Almirola said. “The rain just kept holding off and we just kept continuing to race. It was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this could be the last lap. The rain is coming.’ Every lap was like that, so we were racing so hard, side drafting and everything to try and keep the lead, and then finally the rain came and it worked out.”

In addition to his legendary grandfather who earned six Cup Series tiles with Dale Earnhardt behind the wheel, Dillon is the son Mike Dillon, who made 154 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts before hanging up his helmet and becoming an executive with Richard Childress Racing. Following in the tire tracks of older brother Austin Dillon, Ty Dillon started racing Bandoleros and Legend Cars in 2006. He quickly climbed the racing ladder and was a dominant force in dirt Late Model racing by the time he was 16. Dillon, who grew up in Lewisville, North Carolina, transitioned to asphalt racing in 2009 and made his NASCAR debut in the K&N Pro Series East that season. He claimed the ARCA Menards Series

Bob moved here (to the South) to drive an ARCA car. He ended up helping to me to get a job at SABCO Racing (and team owner Felix Sabates) in 1998.” Meyer’s experience with engines led to his role with Ford’s

crew member profile: TIM MEYER major engine company and one of their strongest organizations. “I’ve worked with a lot of teams, but I’ve been with the Yates Racing for Roush Fenway Racing since 2001,” Meyer said. “I’ve been kind of back and forth as far as being an engine lease person my whole career. I’ve worked on many cars but only worked for a couple of employers.” Meyer knew his talents would fit well in NASCAR’s top series. “When I was working on the dirt late models, I did everything,” Meyer said. “I could do everything from chassis adjustments to everything on the engine side. When I was

at SABCO, they knew I wanted to travel. The shop manager knew that I knew how to work on engines. I was a guy they could put somewhere and not have to worry about it.” At each track, Meyer is responsible for making sure the Roush-Yates Racing Engines are running smoothly. The smallest parts failures can cause big problems. “Nowadays, you might run into a bad sensor since the engines have computer programs and things like that. Sometimes we run into a valve train problem. We very rarely have any other problems anymore. Most times, those things can be repaired at the track.”

Coming of Age Tyler Ankrum excels with DGR-Crosley By Joseph Wolkin

T

yler Ankrum is just fortunate to be racing. To start the year, he missed the first three Gander Outdoors Truck Series races because he had yet to turn 18 years old. NASCAR gave the DGR-Crosely driver a playoff waiver and he took advantage of it by winning at Kentucky Speedway.

▶▶ How difficult was it to start-and-park with NEMCO Motorsports, not knowing what would happen next? “That’s why you have family, friends and people on your team and your management team. They just want me to worry about driving. I go to the shop every single day. Having to go race a few races with NEMCO humbled me because growing up, we never struggled. We go to trucks and we were like, ‘Whoa.’” ▶▶ What’s it like to lead this team? “David [Gilliland] has given me every single opportunity I’ve had in the stock car world. He recognized me first. For me, in a way, to be the No. 1 guy at DGR means a lot to me. Most of the DGR guys were working there when I first started in late models.” 0 3 6

W

ood Brothers Racing, the oldest active NASCAR team and one of the winningest teams in series history, announced that driver Paul Menard will transition from full-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) racing after the 2019 season. Matt DiBenedetto will join the team next season and will race the iconic No. 21 Ford Mustang beginning in 2020. Over the last two seasons, Menard has driven the No. 21 Menards/Motorcraft/Quick Lane Tire & Auto Centers Ford for Wood Brothers Racing, which formed a technical alliance with Team Penske in 2015. After 16 seasons and more than 460 Cup Series races, the veteran driver has made the decision to move on from full-time Cup Series racing after 2019 and spend more time with his family. “I’ve enjoyed every moment of my career racing in the NASCAR Cup Series and I’m so thankful for all the great memories and friendships I’ve made through this sport. But I’m looking forward to spending more time at home with my wife Jennifer and our two

young children while moving forward with the next chapter of my life,” said Menard. Currently competing in his fifth MENCS season, DiBenedetto has been one of the most productive drivers in NASCAR’s premiere series over the last few months. The 28-year-old native of Grass Valley, Calif., has earned six top-10 finishes over the last 10 MENCS races, including three top-five results. DiBenedetto has led 143 laps this season, including at the Daytona 500 and a race-high 93 laps en route to a runner-up result at the Bristol Night Race in August. “I am so excited about this opportunity to race for one of the most successful teams in NASCAR history beginning in 2020,” said DiBenedetto. “The No. 21 Ford is one of the most accomplished and iconic cars in our sport and it will be an honor to join Wood Brothers Racing and help carry on the team’s tradition of success in NASCAR.”

health and wellness

TM

msg: making racing safer By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down

0 6 4

Las Vegas Preview: september 12, 2019

because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People

health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.

“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”

An MSG Partner – Brain Armor Motorsports Safety Group is planning to partner with The Healthy Brain Co. on a mission to positively impact the health and wellness of the brain – 86 billion neurons at a time. Brain Armor products are clinically proven, evidencedbased nutritional formula designed for the sole purpose of building strong, healthy brains through

improved structural integrity and enhanced cognitive performance. Dr. Julian Bailes has helped design the product, which includes some of the most

Las Vegas Preview: september 12, 2019

researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”

Surecan ▶▶ The award-winning SureCan was designed with all of your gas-powered machines in mind. With patented technology, the SureCan offers its user the best experience they have ever had with a fuel can. The flexible spout rotates down more than 180 degrees and fits perfectly into any machine’s fill location, while the thumb-release trigger on top controls the flow. By pulling straight back on the safety trigger and then down on the thumb button, fuel is released immediately while you stay in complete control. When you notice your tank is almost full, slowly release the thumb button and allow the excess fuel to drain from the top of the spout before rotating it back up. No more bending over, tipping your fuel can forward and holding it in an awkward position. The SureCan is a high-quality fuel dispensing machine. Learn more at surecanusa.com. 0 8 0
