he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

Jimmie Johnson Will Be Back Beyond 2020 In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp brings us news about a new interview with Jimmie Johnson and Dale, Jr. In it, the two iconic drivers talk about Johnson’s future with the sport and other motorsports, and Eric is right there with his analysis on what impact it will have on the fanbase. First, let’s get the clickbait out of the way. Yes, Jimmie is considering IndyCar, although he was pretty specific about the schedule he wants to race on - road courses only, not the ovals. Eric has his take on the safety issues involved in open wheel racing on the oval tracks in IndyCar, as well as 0 0 4

Las Vegas rearview: september 16, 2019

Johnson’s history in other motorsports, namely Formula 1. But the big news of the interview was Johnson’s unequivocal statement that he wants to continue racing in NASCAR past 2020, when his contract (and likely his sponsorship with Allied) is up with Hendrick motorsports. What does it mean for Jimmie fans if he stays on, and what are his chances for actually accomplishing anything if he does. All that and more as Eric gives us his take on the future of Jimmie Johnson in NASCAR. Watch the episode and drop your thoughts in the comments!

T

he 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs began in wild fashion on Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as playoff driver Martin Truex Jr. captured the win on a day when many of his fellow title hopefuls endured major setbacks. Here are five key takeaways from the South Point 400 — Race 1 of the final 10 from which the champion will ultimately be crowned. By Jared Turner

Kyle Busch Was Furious After Vegas Finish

R

acing in his hometown of Las Vegas and starting off the playoffs as the No. 1 seed, Kyle Busch had every reason to feel excited and upbeat coming into the weekend. His mood was anything but these by the time he left Sin City, however. Following an early-race setback that left him two laps down, Busch had battled back into the top 10 and was on the cusp of salvaging a solid finish when late-race contact with the lapped car of Garrett Smithley resulted in the No. 18 Toyota losing several positions and ultimately fading to 19th at the checkered flag. Busch, who left Las Vegas fourth in points after dropping three positions in the standings, was furious with how things went down. “We’re the top echelon of motorsports and we’ve got guys that have never won late model races running out here on the racetrack,” Busch said, referring to Smithley. “It’s pathetic. They don’t know where to go. What else do you do?”

Erik Jones, Clint Bowyer, Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman Are in the Danger Zone

W

ith only playoff race complete, a quartet of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers find themselves already in the proverbial danger zone. Those drivers are Erik Jones, Clint Bowyer, Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman, who would be the four drivers eliminated from title contention if the Round of 16 had ended after Sunday’s race in Las Vegas. Newman is six points away from the cutline, while Busch is 14 points back and Bowyer and Jones are 21 and 26 points shy of the cutoff spot, respectively. Busch was certainly the hardest hit of the bunch, as he finished dead last in 39th after contact with eventual race winner Martin Truex Jr. and Chase Elliott caused a tire rub that ultimately sent Busch’s Chevrolet into the wall. Do Newman, Busch, Bowyer and Jones have an opportunity to make up ground and work their way into a transfer spot in the next two races? Absolutely. But they all have their work cut out for them.

Hendrick Motorsports Has Started The Playoffs On A Great Note

A

fter struggling for most of the regular season to keep pace with the Toyotas of Joe Gibbs Racing and the Fords of Team Penske, Hendrick Motorsports began the playoffs on solid footing Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas as the organization’s three playoff drivers — Chase Elliott, William Byron and Alex Bowman — all came home inside the top 10. Leading the Hendrick charge was Elliott, who finished fourth, followed by Bowman (sixth) and Byron (seventh). Byron’s finishing position was particularly impressive, as it came despite a spin that could have completely derailed his day. “We were really fortunate that the caution came out when we spun,” Byron said. “It was crazy. You think about all of the things that can go wrong in a race. It’s tough; you have to really manage the whole race and recover from things that happen. It seemed like every car has something that happened during this race, so you just have to recover from it.”

For Once, Kevin Harvick Was OK With Finishing Second

O

ne of the most hard-core racers you will ever find anywhere, Kevin Harvick truly detests finishing second. But on Sunday at Las Vegas, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver actually seemed surprisingly satisfied with taking the runner-up spot. Harvick, the 2014 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion, started third and led 47 laps — more than race winner Martin Truex Jr. — to move up to second in the standings after starting the playoffs in fourth. “It was good,” Harvick said of his finish in the playoff opener, a race that Truex won by more than four seconds. “We had two solid stages, and with the way practice went for us, that was a miracle. To be in contention with a chance to win the race with 25 laps to go says a lot about the guys working on this 4 car, and everybody did a great job of making something out of what wasn’t very bright for us on Friday.”

Martin Truex Jr. Reminded Everyone Of His Championship Potential

L

ike a sleeping giant awaken from his slumber, Martin Truex Jr. reminded everyone in Sunday’s playoff opener that he’s one of the favorites to make it to Homestead as part of the Championship 4 and even walk away with the championship hardware in hand. Truex, who came into Las Vegas with four wins on the season but none since late June, led 32 laps and overcame a disappointing 24th-place qualifying result to score the victory and in so doing punch an automatic ticket into the Round of 12. Now, he can spend the next two races just trying to amass more playoff points for the upcoming rounds. “It takes the pressure off, for sure,” Truex said. The series points leader for the first time in 2019, Truex is looking to make it two championships in three seasons and be crowned champ in his first season with Joe Gibbs Racing after spending the past five seasons with the now-defunct Furniture Row Racing.

Just Sayin’ Kyle Busch threw a fit during his post-race press conference at Las Vegas.

Kyle Busch Must Learn How To Handle Disappointment By Jared Turner

T

he opening lines of this week’s column borrow from the lyrics of a song by well-known country music artist Brad Paisley. Here’s how it goes: “When you’re a celebrity, it’s adios reality. You can act just like a fool and people think you’re cool, just ‘cause you’re on TV. I can throw a major fit when my latte isn’t just how I like it. When they say I’ve gone insane, I’ll blame it on the fame and the pressures that go with being a celebrity.” This, in a nutshell, is how Kyle Busch acted after a disappointing 19th-place finish in Sunday’s playoff opener. Rather than accepting any of the blame for his less-than-ideal outcome, Busch shifted it elsewhere by insulting a couple of little-known drivers with whom he made contact late in the race. Then, during his mandatory postrace media availability, the 2015 champion was so testy and terse that his answers to questions went as follows: “Don’t know.” … “Not great.” … “Nope.” … “Killed it.” … “Felt great.” … “Nope, can’t pass there.” … “Don’t care.” … “I’m just here so I don’t get fined.” … And, last but not least, “I’m answering

0 1 8

Las Vegas rearview: september 16, 2019

the dumbest (expletive) questions over and over again.” Following that last retort, Busch stormed away and his media session abruptly ended. Call it whatever one may, but the kind of attitude Busch displayed here was at best childish and at worst downright disgraceful. Look, there’s nothing wrong with feeling unhappy about a poor finish. Any racer worth his salt is going to wish for more. But insulting low-budget drivers in far inferior equipment and then basically giving the middle finger to the media is no way to handle disappointment. Come on, Kyle. Your 4-year-old son is watching you. This sport needs you. Untold thousands of fans adore you. You can do better than this. Then again, it is awfully tough being a celebrity.

Rough Playoff Start for Kyle Busch, Erik Jones YouTuber Rusty Walrus is back with his reaction video to the South Point 400 Playoff opener at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The first round of playoffs usually promises to be filled with drama and tension, and this weekend’s race was no disappointment. The biggest point of drama this weekend came courtesy of Kyle Busch. Early on, Busch put his No. 18 Toyota into the wall, and ultimately finished two laps down. These are striking results from Busch in any race, but as a championship contender, it could be devastating to his confidence. 0 2 0

Las Vegas rearview: september 16, 2019

And it’s that confidence that Rusty finds so important in his analysis. When looking at the other drivers, Kevin Harvick for example, or this weekend’s winner Martin Truex, Jr., or even Busch’s other team mate, Denny Hamlin, they all seem to have the right attitude, the right confidence to take home the championship. But, of course, Kyle Busch wasn’t the main story of the show. What’s going on with Erik Jones now that he’s made it into the playoffs? What’s going on with the other Busch brother, Kurt? Find out Rusty’s take on that and more in this week’s episode!

PEAK Series Hauls At the Brickyard Renegades Steal a Round of Points By: M atteo M archeschi

n Tuesday, September 10th, the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series went to the legendary Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to contest 80 laps at the 2.5 mile circuit. Jimmy Mullis of Richmond Raceway eSports started on the pole, beside Flipsid3 Tactics driver Ryan Luza. Mullis didn’t lead a single lap though, as he was freight-trained in turn three. Luza grabbed the lead, but was quickly passed by G2 eSports driver Keegan Leahy, who led lap one. Leahy repped his long-run speed for the second race in a row, leading a race-high 40 laps. He would have likely led even more if not for extended green-flag pit cycles. Just past the halfway point in the race, Brian Schoenburg and Caine Cook made contact, sending them both crashing and bringing out the caution. This would be Leahy’s demise. While he came and left the pits as the leader, he couldn’t make it to the end of the race on fuel from there. A few drivers further back elected to pit again with one lap to go before the restart for a splash of fuel in an effort to make it the rest of the way.

NASCAR eSports On the restart, Bobby Zalenski grabbed the lead, as many drivers elected to save fuel, minimizing on-throttle time. Zalenski pulled away, but started saving extremely hard with about ten laps left. Leahy passed him back, and Zalenski fell to 36th after having to pit with two laps remaining. Leahy, though, wasn’t able to hold the lead, as he had to save more than Corey Vincent and Blake Reynolds behind him. Reynolds would find his way ahead of both Vincent and Leahy, but the Renegades’ Vincent would take the win away from Reynolds on the final lap. With Vincent’s win, nobody is locked into

the finale at Homestead, where the field of eight playoff drivers narrows to four to duke it out for the title. Only the Roval stands between these eight drivers and the chance to race for the title. Currently, Leahy leads the points, with Zack Novak 11 points behind. Also above the cutoff are Garrett Lowe and Reynolds. Luza, Michael Conti, Mullis, and Zalenski all sit below the cutoff line, and each will be desperate for a win at the Roval. The series heads to the Roval on Tuesday, September 24th at 9 PM eastern time. The race can be seen on iRacing’s Twitch channel and the iRacing eSports Network YouTube Channel.

MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By da n gut tenpl a n

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven

0 6 4

Las Vegas rearview: september 16, 2019

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and

health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate

Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

0 6 6

Las Vegas rearview: september 16, 2019

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
