Custer & Reddick Fight: Should Crew Guys Be Penalized? On this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all the wild storylines happening in NASCAR this week, and how this might all play out at Martinsville this weekend. First up though, we have Eric’s take on the fight between Cole Custer and Tyler Reddick at the Xfinity race this past Saturday at Kansas. Obviously there’s a tradition of soft playing these types of altercations - they’re going very fast for a very long time, it’s understandable why their tempers flare. So no 0 0 4

penalties from NASCAR. However, Eric takes us through another side of the story - the crew members. What was their involvement in the fight? How does it compare to the kinds of altercations we’ve seen in the past? Eric breaks it all down. But that’s not all. Eric also talks about the 2019 package and its performance so far this season, the latest silly season rumors and speculation on who’s getting a ride, and some predictions for this weekend’s race at Martinsville. Tune in and check it out!

elcome to the Round of 8. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoff field is now half of its original size, but that only means that the championship pretenders have finally taken a backseat to the real contenders, who are set to do battle this weekend at Martinsville Speedway — NASCAR’s shortest track. Following are five things to watch for in Sunday’s First Data 500. By Jared Turner

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

The Underdogs and The Possibilities
B
y virtually all accounts, Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson weren’t supposed to make it this far into the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. But here they are, two of only eight drivers still eligible to be crowned series champion when the season concludes in three weeks. Now that Blaney and Larson have gotten this deep into the playoffs, why wouldn’t they go for broke and do everything within their power to find their way into the Championship 4? While neither driver has a win at Martinsville, both went to Victory Lane in the Round of 12. Both are also keenly aware of the fact that, due to entering the Round of 8 with fewer points than their fellow title contenders, it’s all but required that they win one of the next three races to have any real chance of advancing to the championship round. Will Blaney and or Larson shock the world and get to Homestead? Hope springs eternal.

Denny Hamlin Feeling Right at Home
N
o one will arrive at Martinsville with more confidence, momentum or good vibes than Chesterfield, Virginia native Denny Hamlin. Besides the fact that Hamlin is riding high after winning last weekend’s race in Kansas City, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver looks forward to racing at Martinsville for two reasons: Virginia is his home state and Martinsville is a place where he’s a five-time winner and has enjoyed some of his greatest moments as a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver. Hamlin knows that beyond a shadow of any doubt, Sunday’s race represents his best opportunity among the three races in the Round of 8 to grab a win and punch an automatic ticket into the Championship 4. So, understandably, he plans to milk the opportunity for all it’s worth. “We couldn’t be more excited about getting to Martinsville with the effort this organization has put into the cars there,” Hamlin crew chief Chris Gabehart said. “Denny is excellent there.”

More Martinsville Dominance from Ford?
N
ot that long ago, it seemed as if a Ford driver couldn’t win a race at Martinsville if life depended on it. These days, however, it seems as if Ford drivers virtually can’t be denied at the Virginia oval. Blame it on a stroke of good fortune, improved race cars or even the possibility that Ford drivers and teams got sick of getting beat, but the bottom line is the Blue Oval brigade has slowly morphed into quite the Martinsville juggernaut. So much so, it’s a good bet that a Ford driver and team will be celebrating in Victory Lane on Sunday. Ford has now won four of the past five races at Martinsville, after going winless here from 2003-2016. Prior to Ford’s Martinsville revival, Chevrolet and Toyota had combined to win 25 consecutive premier series races at Martinsville. During that stretch, Chevrolet drivers ripped off two impressive winning streaks — the first lasting seven races, and the second lasting eight.

Spoiler Alert
G
iven the fact that aerodynamics play a less significant role at Martinsville than at practically any other track on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule, this Virginia short track always lends itself to the possibility of a driver who doesn’t normally contend for wins sneaking his way into contention. With the playoff field now down to eight drivers, Sunday’s race — at the very least — creates a greater opportunity for a non-playoff driver to potentially end up in Victory Lane. That’s especially true when considering that Brad Keselowski, a winner of two of the last five Martinsville races, is now outside of the playoffs. The same is so for nine-time Martinsville winner and seven-time series champion Jimmie Johnson along with spring 2018 Martinsville winner Clint Bowyer. As more big names fall out of title contention, there’s an increased chance of a nonplayoff driver winning a race and being a spoiler — especially at a place like Martinsville.

High Stakes And Short-Track Tempers
C
onsisting of a mere .526 miles in length and built in 1947, Martinsville Speedway is the shortest and oldest track on the schedule. Add in the fact that Martinsville is shaped like a paperclip and notoriously hard on brakes, and you have one of the sport’s most challenging and entertaining racetracks. This is especially true in the fall, when Martinsville has traditionally played host to the opening race in the Round of 8 — the first opportunity for a driver to punch a ticket into the Championship 4. With such high stakes, look for the championship contenders to throw everything but the proverbial kitchen sink at a victory. Remember, it was just last year that Joey Logano memorably knocked Martin Truex Jr. out of the way as the two battled for the win in turns 3 and 4 on the final lap at Martinsville. Logano took the victory and punched his ticket into the championship race while Truex angrily bemoaned the outcome.

5 drivers to watch
5 Brad keselowski

chase elliott
By Jared Turner ▶▶ Brad keselowski. After years of trying and failing to win at Martinsville, Brad Keselowski has mastered the Virginia short track in recent times. A winner of two of the past five Martinsville races, including the one held at Martinsville earlier this year, the Team Penske driver has a golden opportunity to play the role of spoiler a week after being eliminated from the playoffs. ▶▶ jimmie johnson. No driver has had more success at Martinsville over the past two decades than Jimmie Johnson. A nine-time winner at the .526-mile facility, Johnson was once dubbed “Mr. Martinsville” for his mastery of the Virginia short track. Will he get a win this weekend? It would be his first at the track since 2016 and his first at any track since June of 2017.
Kyle busch
▶▶ chase elliott. Chase Elliott squeaked his way into the Round of 8 with a dramatic second-place finish last weekend at Kansas. NASCAR’s most popular driver now hopes to carry that momentum over to Martinsville, the track where he made his premier series debut in 2015 and finished second earlier this year.
Denny Hamlin
▶▶ kyle busch. For a long time, Martinsville Speedway was a thorn in Kyle Busch’s side. Not so anymore. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has won two of the last seven Martinsville races and finished third here in the spring. Busch, who begins the Round of 8 as the points leader, hasn’t been to Victory Lane since June.

▶▶ denny hamlin. Having grown up a couple of hours down the road in Chesterfield, Virginia and driven Late Models at Martinsville, Denny Hamlin has an affinity for the paperclip-shaped oval like few other drivers. He’s also a five-time Martinsville winner, so he’s always on the shortlist of favorites to go to Victory Lane. This weekend is no exception.

n Nov. 6, 1988, Alan Kulwicki led the final 16 laps at Phoenix International Raceway to log the first Winston Cup series victory of his career. The Wisconsin native moved into the lead when engine failure plagued Ricky Rudd’s Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Rudd led 183 of the race’s 312 laps. Kulwicki sealed the deal by pulling away from Terry Labonte in the closing laps by 16.5 seconds. After taking the checkered flag in NASCAR’s first race on the one-mile oval, Kulwicki drove the track in the opposite direction to the delight of a capacity crowd. “That was a Polish Victory Lap, and I’ve been planning that

for a long time,” Kulwicki said, according to a 2016 FOX Sports article. “There will never be another first win and, you know, everybody sprays champagne or stands up on the car. I wanted to do something different for the fans.” Kulwicki beat the odds with his own team and only a few employees against NASCAR’s top organizations. Sadly, the 1992 Winston Cup champion lost his life in a plane crash in April of 1993. “It’s been a long road, and it takes a lot of hard work to get here,” Kulwicki said. “When you work for something so hard for so long, you wonder if it’s going to be worth all of the anticipation. Believe me, it certainly was.”

His job is to find sets that will work best under race conditions. “I’d say the biggest challenge it’s getting the tire stagger where you want it to be and keeping it consistent,” Mingo said. “If you have a big change in stagger from set to set, it can through your chassis set-ups off on the car pretty big.”

Release competitor, and we’re proud to support him and his No. 24 team.” Hertz began its sponsorship of Hendrick Motorsports and the No. 24 team in May 2018 and has heavily leveraged the partnership, including collaborating to introduce an exclusive line of Hertz-Hendrick Motorsports custom Camaro rental cars that pay tribute to Byron’s No. 24 car. Byron’s 2020 No. 24 Hertz Chevrolet paint scheme, which is a reversed version of the custom Camaro design, was unveiled this morning in Charlotte during a promotional event for the Hertz-Hendrick Motorsports custom Camaro rental program. The new No. 24 team livery will debut this season at ISM Raceway on Nov. 10. “We’re thrilled to see our partnership with Hertz continue,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “From offering a special line of Camaros to rewarding high-performing employees with NASCAR experiences, Hertz has done a wonderful job with the program. No. 24 team is very bright, and we look forward to sharing that future with everyone at Hertz.” Byron, 21, followed his 2018 NASCAR Cup Series rookie of the year season by earning his first career playoff berth in 2019. Through 32 of 36 races this year, he has posted five pole positions, which tie him for the series lead, and set personal bests in nearly all statistical categories, including top-five finishes (4), top-10s (12) and laps led (225). “I’m really excited to continue building on our relationship with Hertz,” Byron said. “They came on board the No. 24 during my rookie season and have continued their awesome support as we’ve grown as a team. We’ve done a lot in a short amount of time, but there’s so much more to accomplish. I can’t wait to put the new No. 24 Hertz paint scheme on the racetrack and see what else we can do together.”

MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven
0 5 6

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and
health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate
Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
