HAVE WE FORGOTTEN WHO DENNY HAMLIN IS? Rusty Walrus has quite the reaction this week to the First Data 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Between Martin Truex, Jr. absolutely dominating the field, to the pit road fight between Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin, there is no shortage of action this week for Rusty to react to. First he takes on the fight between Logano and Hamlin. While the altercation didn’t seem to start very rough, with a fairly lowkey confrontation from Logano, Hamlin sure escalated it quickly before being broken up. What did this reveal about the drivers, specifically Hamlin and Logano as they near the end of the season? Have the fans forgotten who 0 0 4

Denny Hamlin is as a driver? Rusty has his take. Then we have Rusty’s views on Martin Truex, Jr. as he seemingly makes his way toward a championship in 2019. He dominated at Martinsville this weekend, and has had an incredible run throughout the playoffs and the back half of the season. Truex’s attitude, however, doesn’t reveal the cockiness so much as the enjoyment. As Rusty describes, Truex might even be having fun with his championship run. All that and his reaction to Alex Bowman’s run-in with Bubba Wallace and more in this week’s episode of the Rusty Report!

Such were the outcomes and emotions that marked the running of the final short-track race of the 2019 season. he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

CHASE ELLIOTT HAD A WEEKEND HE WOULD RATHER FORGET
B
y all accounts, the Martinsville race weekend couldn’t have gone much worse for Chase Elliott. The problems started for NASCAR’s most popular driver during Saturday practice when an engine failure on Elliott’s No. 9 Chevrolet meant he would have to start at the rear of the field for Sunday’s race. Once Sunday arrived and the race began, however, Elliott moved forward in a hurry and looked to have a car capable of contending for the win before trouble returned on lap 183 in the form of a broken axle. Following extended repairs, Elliott returned to the track multiple laps down in 38th position — dead last — and managed to pick up only two positions before the checkered flag. “Just disappointing for a day like that,” the second-generation driver said. “We know better and we can do better than that.” Elliott now ranks last among the eight title contenders entering next weekend’s race at Texas.

ARIC ALMIROLA IS TICKED AT KYLE BUSCH, BUT BUSCH DOESN’T CARE
K
yle Busch’s losing streak continued with a disappointing 14th-place finish on Sunday at Martinsville Speedway. The more bothersome part, however, might be the fact that Busch made an enemy in the process. After suffering damage to his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota from contact with Aric Almirola’s No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford on lap 360 of 500, Busch was never the same the rest of the way. He later admitted to deliberately spinning Almirola. “He ran over me, so I chopped him and then we got hooked together,” said Busch, who fell from first to third in the standings but remained on solid footing to advance to the Championship 4. Almirola, meanwhile, hinted at possible retaliation for Busch in the final three weeks of the season. “I’m going to make it hell for him,” Almirola said. Told of Almirola’s comments, Busch offered a terse retort. “Sounds good,” the 2015 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion said.

WILLIAM BYRON ALMOST SUCCEEDED AS THE SPOILER
I
t’s very rare in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs for a non-playoff driver to successfully play the role of spoiler and win a race, but that almost happened at Martinsville on Sunday when second-year Monster Energy Series driver William Byron finished runner-up to race winner Martin Truex Jr. Although Byron clearly did not have a car capable of challenging Truex’s dominant Toyota throughout most of the race, Byron wouldn’t let Truex get too far away in the closing laps and crossed the finish line only .373 seconds behind the No. 19 Toyota. Would Byron have been willing to knock Truex out of the way for his first win if he could have gotten close enough to Truex’s bumper on the final lap? “Yeah, I mean, whatever it takes,” the Hendrick Motorsports driver said. “I wouldn’t race him dirty, but I’m really hungry for my first win, so whatever it takes.”

THERE’S NO LOVE BETWEEN DENNY HAMLIN AND JOEY LOGANO
A
fter making contact on the track while battling for a position in the top five late in the race, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano were civilly discussing the matter on pit road when the conversation took a sudden turn for the worse. Right as the discussion ended and the two drivers started to go their separate ways, Logano smacked Hamlin on the shoulder, prompting Hamlin to go chasing after Logano. Chaos ensued from there as the two championship contenders pushed and shoved and had to be restrained. Hamlin got the worst of the ordeal, falling to the ground when he was hit by one of Logano’s crew members. “Denny is Denny,” Logano later said. “He’s a little bit arrogant sometimes, and I should be stronger than to let that get underneath my skin when he does that.” Hamlin, meanwhile, mocked Logano’s mannerisms. “He probably would say, ‘Oh, short-track racing!’” Hamlin said. “So that’s Joey. Scared.”

MARTIN TRUEX JR. GOT HIS MARTINSVILLE REDEMPTION
O
ne year after being aggressively booted out of the way by Joey Logano in the final corner on the final lap at Martinsville, Martin Truex Jr. got his Martinsville redemption — and it couldn’t have been any more gratifying or come in any more convincing fashion. Armed with a race car that was hands-down in a league of its own, Truex obliterated the competition as he led 464 of 500 laps on the way to his seventh win of the season and first ever victory at the .526-mile paperclipshaped oval. With the victory, Truex punched an automatic ticket into the Championship 4 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the third year in a row. After finishing runner-up to Logano in last year’s season-ending winner-take-all event, Truex will look to earn his second championship in three seasons. If he runs as well in South Florida as he did on Sunday at Martinsville, there won’t be any stopping him.

JUST SAYIN’ Martin Truex Jr. collected his seventh win of the season at Martinsville.
TRUEX JR. CEMENTS CASE AS FAVORITE HEADING TO HOMESTEAD BY JA RED TURNER
A
s the 2019 season has rolled on, one thing has become abundantly clear: Martin Truex Jr. is, without question, the driver to beat for the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship. Oh, sure, I recently wrote in this same space that this championship is far from settled and that any one of the eight remaining title contenders could be celebrating at the conclusion of next month’s season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. While I have not abandoned that sentiment, let’s take a moment to deal with some facts. Fact No. 1 is that Truex has been the dominant driver of 2019. Oh sure, two of Truex’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammates, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch, have had their moments in the sun. Ditto for Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott. But no driver and team have been as consistently fast as Truex and his No. 19 bunch led by veteran crew chief Cole Pearn. Fact No. 2 is that Truex didn’t just win Sunday’s race at Martinsville Speedway. Rather, he completely embarrassed his competition, to the point that it was clear from the opening laps that everyone else was
0 1 8
MARTINSVILLE REARVIEW: OCTOBER 28, 2019
racing for second. This kind of tail-whipping is rarely seen in today’s ultra-competitive world of stock-car racing and speaks to just how superior Truex’s car was to everyone else’s. Never mind that Truex had never even won at Martinsville before Sunday. And never mind that he’d never won at a short track, period, prior to 2019. Fact No. 3 is that Truex and his team can spend the next two weeks fine-tuning on their Homestead car, as they literally have nothing to gain or lose at Texas or Phoenix. This extra time to prepare gives Truex and his team a distinctive leg up. The bottom line? Truex might not win the championship. But after what happened on Sunday at Martinsville, anyone would be crazy not to anoint him as the clear-cut favorite.

It was Shearburn who jumped ahead, with Crowder falling back. Shearburn was contested by Braden Boulos, Crowder’s teammate at SiltmanCrowder Racing. The two battled side-by-side until lap six, when the pack went three-wide,

Benjamin Nelson then grabbed the point on lap 15 before Kettelle took it back, racing beside David Shutt of High Performance Motorsports. Trouble struck when, on lap 21, Ray Alfalla charged to the front on the far outside line. Kettelle, three-wide in the middle, wiggled up into Alfalla, unleashing carnage. Despite being bounced around, it was Alfalla who emerged with the lead, as most of the cars around him wrecked. After the wreck, numerous drivers swapped the lead, including Logan Kress, Nathan Lyon, and Jeremy Allen. Graham Bowlin led for a while near halfway before being overtaken by Timmy Hill. Green flag pit stops began around two-thirds through the race, with John Gorlinsky coming out in front, with a huge pack still trailing. Even challenged by the middle and top lanes, Gorlinsky held the point on the inside as the laps wound down. As a possible victory grew closer, another wreck erupted with only a few laps remaining, this time in the middle of the pack, ignited as the pack moved to pass the lap cars of Ray Alfalla and Bryan Blackford. The wreck wiped out about half of the cars remaining and sent Liam Brotherton flying. Gorlinsky held the lead when the caution flew, and restarted up front. On the green-white-checkered restart, he stuck to his beloved inside lane to grab victory. The NASCAR iRacing Pro Series returns to the track at Atlanta Motor Speedway on October 29th at 8 PM eastern time on the Podium eSports Network on Twitch.

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.
Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. MSG: THE Q COLLAR IS THE FUTURE OF BRAIN SAFETY BY DA N GUT TENPL A N
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven
0 5 6

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and
HEALTH AND WELLNESS human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate
EXPLAINING THE SLOSH EFFECT This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in
0 5 8

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
