Jeffrey Earnhardt Drops Sponsor and JGR In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp brings us the latest news from around the sport. And this week definitely has some hot topics. One of the most critical pieces of the NASCAR industry is the team sponsors, the companies who we, as fans, see on the side of the cars, up and down the fire suits, and splayed across the side of an 18-wheeler hauler. The sponsors help pay for everything from tires to travel to the driver’s salary. 0 0 4

This weeks’ news focuses all around the sponsorship side of the sport. There is definitely good news, with heavy hitters like Penske expanding their program next season. But there is also drama, this time between driver Jeffrey Earnhardt, his team JGR, and their sponsor iK9. Find out the full context of the public argument between driver and sponsor, and how this is going to affect the rest of the scheduled season. Will Jeffrey Earnhardt be back in a car in 2019? You’ll have to watch the episode to find out!

Hometown Boy Brad’s Pursuit Of A Michigan Breakthrough

B

ack when he was a driver in what is now the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Brad Keselowski had virtually no trouble finding his way to Victory Lane at Michigan International Speedway. It happened twice in only seven attempts — and with two different teams. Based on that success, Keselowski had no reason to think or assume that winning a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at his home track would take more than a few tries. But it has. In fact, it’s taken 20 — and the native of Rochester Hills, Michigan is still in search of his maiden victory at the venue located less than two hours from his hometown. “It is a huge item on the bucket list,” Keselowski said. “A check mark that is not there. I feel like we have had the opportunity, and we have made a few mistakes. In some ways, we have been good but not great enough to do it.”

Manufacturer Wars

S

hould anyone need reminding, Michigan International Speedway is located virtually in the backyard of the world headquarters for General Motors (Chevrolet) and Ford, which are based in Detroit and Dearborn, Michigan, respectively. For this reason, manufacturer bragging rights are a bigger deal at MIS than they are pretty much anywhere else on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule. A win at Michigan is about more than the winning driver and his team; it’s about the manufacturer that they represent. “It’s Ford’s home track,” said reigning series champion Joey Logano, who back in June captured Ford’s third consecutive victory at MIS. “What that means to the Ford family is so big. I can’t say how big, how much they talk about how bad they want to win at this racetrack. When you’re able to be that person that delivers that for them, that’s a special feeling — maybe one of the best feelings.”

An Angry, Highly Motivated Jimmie Johnson

W

inless for more than two years, Jimmie Johnson is understandably growing more frustrated by the race. That was more apparent than ever this past weekend at Watkins Glen, where the seven-time Monster Energy Series champion scolded youngster Ryan Blaney after contact between the two drivers resulted in Johnson going for a spin in his No. 48 Chevrolet. Prior to his collision with Blaney, Johnson had been headed for a likely top-10 finish. Instead, he finished 19th and remained squarely on the bubble for making it into the playoffs with just four races left before the 16-driver playoff field is set. Before leaving Watkins Glen, Johnson minced no words with regard to his feelings about Blaney or how he plans to deal with the Team Penske driver moving forward. Could retaliation be waiting at Michigan? “He claims it was just racing,” Johnson said of Blaney’s bump. “So, I can hardly wait to go racing. Everybody, stay tuned.”

A New Bullseye On Kyle Busch’s Back

W

ho left Watkins Glen angry with Kyle Busch last weekend? Or perhaps the better question is: Who didn’t? OK, maybe that second question is a bit of hyperbole, but the bottom line is that Bubba Wallace and William Byron both took extreme umbrage with Busch’s on-track aggression which ultimately resulted in both young drivers suffering setbacks but culminated in both drivers retaliating in a big way against the 2015 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion. Now the question on everyone’s mind is whether it’s over. Wallace, in particular, was irate with how Busch raced him and made it patently clear that he refuses to be pushed around. Ditto for Byron crew chief Chad Knaus, who basically demanded his driver run into Busch as a way of showing his displeasure. So, are Wallace and Byron done retaliating or might be Busch ready to exact a little revenge of his own at Michigan? Stay tuned. It could get really interesting.

A Resurgent And Rejuvenated Chase Elliott

A

fter going seven races without a top-10 finish, Chase Elliott returned to frontrunner status in grand fashion last weekend at Watkins Glen by scoring the victory and leading a whopping 80 of 90 laps on the 2.45-mile road course in Upstate New York. So, will Elliott build on the momentum of that win when he gets to Michigan this weekend or will he revert to the disappointing form he had carried over the two months leading up to The Glen? History suggests Elliott will at least be a contender at Michigan, a track where he owns six top-10 finishes in seven starts. Interestingly, Elliott’s best outings at the 2-mile track have been his first three — which all resulted in second-place finishes. Regardless, the Hendrick Motorsports driver and his No. 9 team led by veteran crew chief Alan Gustafson have reason for optimism as NASCAR returns to the Irish Hills for the second time in less than two months.

PATHWAYS TO THE JOBS OF THE FUTURE

Opportunities for jobs in the autonomous vehicle industry are increasing as multiple companies race to put the first commerciallyavailable self-driving cars on the roads. According to ZipRecruiter, an online employment marketplace, autonomous driving job listings increased 27 percent year over year in January 2018. From the second quarter of 2017 to the second quarter of 2018, the amount of postings boomed 250 percent on the site due to a hiring spree at the beginning of the year. Companies are currently hiring engineers, technicians, software developers and designers to build autonomous vehicles. Source: CNBC.com

drivers to watch at MICHIGAN

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Joey logano. A three-time winner at Michigan, Joey Logano most recently went to Victory Lane at the 2-mile track back in June when the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race was delayed a day because of persistent rain. Once the race finally got going, Logano led 163 of 203 laps en route to a commanding victory. ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Knocked around last weekend at Watkins Glen by a pair of drivers looking to settle a score with him, Kyle Busch will no doubt arrive at Michigan with extra motivation to go to Victory Lane. The biggest key to him having a good afternoon might be his ability to avoid making more enemies. ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson. Michigan has never been one of Jimmie Johnson’s best tracks, but the seven-time champion has added incentive this weekend after being booted out of the way last weekend at Watkins Glen by Ryan Blaney. Johnson is also squarely on the playoff bubble, so his performance on Sunday will be pivotal to his playoff qualification or lack thereof. ▶▶ Kyle Larson. A winner of three consecutive races at Michigan from August 2016 through August 2017, Kyle Larson certainly knows his way to Victory Lane in the Irish Hills. But the Chip Ganassi Racing driver hasn’t won anywhere since September 2017, which makes a win on Sunday seem a bit more unlikely. ▶▶ Matt Dibenedetto. Matt DiBenedetto has seemingly come out of nowhere to record four top-10 finishes in his last seven outings. Admittedly fighting to keep a ride in NASCAR’s premier series for 2020, the Leavine Family Racing driver hopes to maintain his hot hand this weekend at one of NASCAR’s more forgiving tracks.

Finally a Winner at Daytona Baker Sets Record in NASCAR’s Biggest Race By Ben white

O

n Feb. 17, 1980, Buddy Baker, driver of the No. 28 WIN Racing Oldsmobile owned by Harry Ranier, dominated the Daytona 500 and finally got to victory lane after decades of disappointments. The 39-year old Charlotte, N.C., native started from the pole position and cruised across the start-finish line 12 seconds ahead of second-place Bobby Allison, driver of the No. 15 Bud Moore Engineering Ford. Destined to win, Baker sealed the deal when the race ended under caution for a blown engine in a backmarker car. Dale Earnhardt, Baker’s strongest competition through the 200-lap event in a Rod Osterlund-owned Oldsmobile, dropped

a lap off the pace when a bad pit stop with 18 laps remaining took him out of contention. Using an engine built by Waddell Wilson, Baker set a record average speed of 177.602 miles per hour on a closed course while leading 143 laps. In year’s past, his victories slipped away in the closing laps due to mechanical failures or fuel tanks that couldn’t go the distance. “I’ve been trying to win this race for nearly 20 years,” Baker said in Greg Fielden’s 40 Years of Stock Car Racing book series. “When a car runs that well, all you want to do is keep it between the walls. No one could catch me today. Waddell Wilson is the true reason that car won today.”

His performance in underfunded equipment eventually earned DiBenedetto his big break, as he was named to replace the retiring Kasey Kahne in the No. 95 Leavine Family Racing Toyota for the 2019 season. Away from the track, DiBenedetto enjoys CrossFit workouts and spends much of his free time making performance modifications to street cars.

By K eith Waltz

att DiBenedetto, a 28-year-old racer from Grass Valley, California, never had the funding to advance his racing career, instead he had to do it the old-fashioned way – by performing the best he could with the equipment at hand. Born July 27, 1991, DiBenedetto developed an interest in racing by watching the sport on television. He began driving Outlaws Karts at Cycleland Speedway when he was 8 years old and quickly advanced through the various divisions. His attention eventually turned to Late Models and the DiBenedetto family relocated to Hickory, North Carolina, in an effort to further Matt’s racing career. The move paid off as DiBenedetto was named rookie of the year and finished fourth in the UARA Stars Late Model Tour standings in 2007. DiBenedetto made his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut in 2009, the same year he won a pair of NASCAR K&N Pro Series East races. However, opportunities were few and far between until 2015 when he was hired to drive for BK Racing in the Monster

crew member profile: Dave Jones “I spent about 10 years working with Late Models and some K&N Pro Series racing. Then a friend asked to help with a K&N team owned by (former driver) Chad Little that his son drove for. They brought me on and it went from there.” Jones worked for seven years with various Xfinity Series teams before coming to NASCAR’s Monster Energy Cup Series at the start of 2018. “I was looking for something different and knew Tony Furr, the crew chief at StarCom at that time,” Jones said. “We worked together in the past and figured he and I could have some fun again and go racing.” Jones makes certain every nut and bolt on

the StarCom Racing Chevrolet Camaros are tight and ready to race. There’s a lot to manage but he feels right at home and wouldn’t dream of doing anything else. “The car chief is in charge of the entire race car and is the crew chief’s second-hand man and go-to guy,” Jones said. “The car chief also delegates all the work to the rest of the crew. With a small team, there’s a lack of people so you have to put in long hours. “Being in the back half of the garage, you feel you’re a little bit behind the big teams because they are so prepared. Keeping up with them is the hardest thing to do. I just care so much about it (racing and the team).”

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

Richard Childress Racing part-time XFINITY Series driver Joe Graf Jr.

SPLITTING TIME Joe Graf Jr. balances school and racing By Joseph Wolkin

I

t’s rare for a driver to intern with a team, but that’s the life for New York University student Joe Graf Jr. He went down to North Carolina and signed on as an intern with Richard Childress Racing, also getting five XFINITY Series races in the process. ▶▶ How did this deal come about? “I was a freshman at NYU and now, I’ll be a sophomore. I wanted to be in racing. When I went to school in New York City, it was tough to fly to races and never be at the shop. I’ve been working in their marketing and communications department since March.” ▶▶ What’s it like to work with Richard Childress Racing? “It’s amazing. The knowledge Richard has from his time in racing is unbelievable. I’ve learned so much from him that I can’t thank him enough for everything. I’ve leaned on Tyler [Reddick] pretty heavily. He’s so nice and he’s helped me out so much.”

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.

Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. Magic Clear Lens is a cleaning, preservation, and maintenance treatment that instantly reveals a bright and clear headlight. Not only will your headlights look exceptionally better, but nighttime driving will be safer.

health and wellness

TM

msg: making racing safer By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down

0 5 2

Michigan preview: august 8, 2019

because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People

health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.

“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”

An MSG Partner – Brain Armor Motorsports Safety Group is planning to partner with The Healthy Brain Co. on a mission to positively impact the health and wellness of the brain – 86 billion neurons at a time. Brain Armor products are clinically proven, evidencedbased nutritional formula designed for the sole purpose of building strong, healthy brains through

improved structural integrity and enhanced cognitive performance. Dr. Julian Bailes has helped design the product, which includes some of the most

Michigan preview: august 8, 2019

researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”

Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner

N

ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side. Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.” Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance. “I always had a beagle growing up, and when I

0 5 6

Michigan preview: august 8, 2019

was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.” Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free. “They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said. “They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”
