Disaster for Points Bubble Drivers In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his full analysis of the racing this weekend at the Consumers Energy 400 at Michigan International Speedway. First up, Harvick stole the show with the checkered flag. No, not Keelan, although he put on his own show for the camera. No. 4’s Kevin Harvick racked up his second victory of the season at Michigan this weekend. 0 0 4

But the real deep dive Eric does this week is on the bubble drivers. Many big name drivers, including Blaney, Almirola, Bowyer, and others, are still on the bubble without wins this season. What does the future hold for the drivers still stuck on the points bubble? And where does the Consumers Energy 400 land on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

s the summer heat intensifies, Kevin Harvick likewise continues to heat up. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver made it two wins in four races with a victory on Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, where he further solidified his standing as one of the drivers to beat for the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship. Here are five takeaways from the Consumers Energy 400: By Jared Turner

A New Twist In The Battle Around The Bubble
A
fter spending most of the season looking like a longshot to make the playoffs, Daniel Suarez has suddenly moved within striking distance of the bubble with just three races to go before the 16-driver playoff field is set. Bad outings for both Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer on Sunday at Michigan moved Suarez to within six points of Bowyer, who now clings to the final playoff berth. Johnson, meanwhile, has slipped to 18th-place and is 12 points to the negative of the playoff cutline, while Ryan Newman — who arrived at Michigan on the outside looking in — is up to 15th and has a 10-point buffer on Bowyer and a 16-point buffer on Suarez. “You can talk about the bubble and worrying about points, but I am way more worried about getting established and running up front at these types of racetracks,” Bowyer said. “If you make the playoffs and can’t compete in it, then what is the use?”

Jimmie Johnson Made A Mistake And Owned It
J
immie Johnson arrived at Michigan still blaming Ryan Blaney for the contact in the previous weekend’s race at Watkins Glen that sent his No. 48 car into a spin and cost him precious points in his pursuit of a playoff berth. Johnson had a much different tune as he prepared to leave Michigan, however. After an early-race brush with the wall that ultimately led to a 34thplace finish, the seven-time champion blamed no one but himself for his latest miscue. “The right side tires went into the PJ1 and as soon as I got my tires in it, I went straight into the wall,” said Johnson, whose playoff hopes took a major hit as a result of his Michigan finish. “When you’re aggressive, it doesn’t work, and then sometimes you’re cautious and it doesn’t work. It was a great car. That hurt, for sure. We’re just going to have to rally on, and these guys are doing an amazing job. We’ll keep digging.”

Not Surprisingly, Fuel Economy Was Key
O
ver the years, many races at Michigan International Speedway have been largely influenced by fuel mileage. After Sunday, you can add one more to the list. While fuel economy certainly wasn’t the only factor in the outcome of Sunday’s race at the two-mile track, it played a role, as several frontrunners — including the Team Penske cars of Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano — both had to pit for a quick splash in the final laps while others, such as race winner Kevin Harvick, were able to go the distance. “I needed more gas,” Logano said. “The Shell car isn’t supposed to run out of gas. The positive is we were way better than we were on Friday and Saturday. The negative is that we almost won the race but ended up finishing 17th. You win some, you lose some. If the caution comes out, we would have been in good shape. But it stayed green, and that is it. That is the gamble. We took the gamble, and it didn’t pay off.”

It’s Heartbreak Hotel For Brad Keselowski At Home
A
native of nearby Rochester Hills, Michigan located less than two hours from Michigan International Speedway, Brad Keselowski treats MIS as a home track. So, understandably, there are few if any wins that Keselowski covets more than one in either of the two annual Monster Energy Series races at the 2-mile facility he holds so near and dear. But, for one reason or another, it just hasn’t happened yet. Keselowski’s latest failed attempt came Sunday, when he battled back from a tire failure and led 66 laps only to finish 19th when his No. 2 Team Penske Ford ran out of gas near the finish. “Man, I want this one so bad,” said Keselowski, who is now 0-for-21 in Michigan Cup races. “We got that flat tire early on, and we recovered and got up to third there in the late stages and then we just ran out of gas. That is just the way it goes sometimes.”

Kevin Harvick Is Returning To Championship Form
A
fter spending most of the season’s first half admittedly frustrated by the lack of speed in his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Fords, Kevin Harvick has turned a corner in the past several weeks and is suddenly looking like the championship contender he’s accustomed to being. The most recent indicator yet of the progress made by Harvick’s No. 4 team and SHR as a whole came Sunday at Michigan where Harvick won for the second time in four weeks after starting the season 0-for-19. With his victory on Sunday, the 2014 premier series champion has now finished no worse than seventh over the past four races while continuing to chip away at the advantage held for most of 2019 by the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas of Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and, more recently, Denny Hamlin. Harvick’s victory on Sunday was particularly impressive, considering that it came despite an early-race tire failure and unscheduled pit stop.

Just sayin’ Keven Harvick shares his victory with his son Keelan
Kevin Harvick Deserves The “Dad Of The Year” Award By Jared Turner
S
earch high and low, and you won’t find a NASCAR driver who is any more fierce behind the wheel than Kevin Harvick. But for every bit that Harvick is passionate about winning races and championships, he’s just as passionate about being a good parent. While Sunday at Michigan was not the first time that Harvick has involved his son, Keelan, in a post-race celebration, the 2014 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion took it to a whole new level. Instead of just letting Keelan ride with him to Victory Lane or go get the checkered flag from the starter’s stand, both of which he’s done before, Harvick allowed his 7-year-old to ride with him inside the car during his celebratory burnout. Not surprisingly, the fans in attendance roared their approval. Kevin, for his part, couldn’t have been any prouder to share the moment with his oldest child and only son, who travels with his dad to the races every summer while mom DeLana stays back home with the couple’s daughter, Piper.

“Putting him in the car was more exciting than winning the race,” Kevin said. “For me, it’s making those memories and being able to do that with him. Heck, he may never get to do a donut in his life or hear 40,000 or 50,000 people screaming and yelling, and that enthusiasm of the excitement from the crowd. Those are neat experiences that most kids don’t get to experience, but most kids’ dads don’t race cars, and for me to be able to share that with him is pretty neat, and for NASCAR to let us do that and make those memories is also pretty awesome.” Want to know what else is awesome? The fact that Kevin cares enough about his son to make as many memories and savor as many moments with him as he possibly can.

Rusty Reacts to Harvick’s Win at Michigan We’re back this week in Rusty’s secret parking spot, and he has one heck of a reaction this week to the Consumers Energy 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The crispy clean Hass cap gives us a hint on who has his attention this weekend - Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 for Stewart-Haas Racing, who earned his second win of 2019 this weekend. Overcoming a flat tire very early on in the race, and then working his way up through the field, Kevin Harvick has certainly been on a tear during the back half of this season. And this weekend, he certainly earned his nickname of 0 2 0

“the Closer,” finishing off Logano with less than 20 laps still left to go. The playoff points were also hot on everyone’s mind at Michigan, and Rusty gives us the rundown on the points battles, and their outcomes, from the 400. Bowyer, Newman, and Suarez, all seen as erstwhile contenders for the playoffs this year, are each struggling on the edge. Who’s capitalizing on the last few races of the 2019 season? And what was the most exciting part of the race at Michigan? Watch Rusty’s full reaction in this episode above to find out!

PEAK’s Wild Racing at Michigan Lowe’s Underdog Run Wows the Viewers By: M atteo M archeschi

n Tuesday, August 6th, the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series headed to the 2-mile, wide-open Michigan International Speedway, for a 100-lap event. Second-in-points Keegan Leahy started from the pole position, and in the couple of laps, Leahy and outside polesitter Brad Davies swapped the lead, until Ray Alfalla made a huge move 3-wide to the inside to steal the lead away. Alfalla led the better part of the first half

of the race, until Brandon Kettelle took the lead away on lap 46. Kettelle would be overtaken 15 laps later by G2 eSports driver Keegan Leahy. Leahy held the lead much of the rest of the race, but a caution with six laps remaining caused by a spin by Clint Bowyer Racing’s Nickolas Shelton set up a late race restart which would spell disaster for Leahy. Brandon Kettelle would pass Leahy on pit road, and get the lead, but some technical

NASCAR eSports issues gave him an end-of-the-longest-line penalty which ended his chance to win. Wood Brothers Racing’s Chris Overland inherited the lead, and would restart beside Leahy with only two laps remaining. Neither driver, though, would capture the checkered flag. That honor would go to the Renegades’ Garrett Lowe, who made a three wide move on the inside of Leahy and Overland. Overland got loose in the middle and made contact with Jimmy Mullis on his outside. Mullis got into then-leader Keegan Leahy, who was sent sideways, sending tons of cars wrecking. Lowe made it out the other end of the backstretch mele, but it wasn’t over yet. Team Dillon eSports pilot Blake Reynolds dove under Lowe heading into turn three,

and, heading towards the line, Chris Overland showed up again with a miraculous one-lap recovery to made the fight for the win a threeway battle. Lowe was first to the line in the middle, with Overland in second on his outside and Reynolds in third on his inside. The win is Lowe’s first career Peak Series win, and a significant upset, considering Lowe only led three laps of the 100 run. Leahy ended up 34th after his last-lap accident, allowing Ryan Luza to maintain the points lead with a quiet eighth-place run. The Peak Series heads to Bristol Motor Speedway on August 20th to finish off the regular season. The race can be seen live on iRacing’s Twitch channel and the iRacing eSports Network YouTube channel.

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.
Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. Magic Clear Lens is a cleaning, preservation, and maintenance treatment that instantly reveals a bright and clear headlight. Not only will your headlights look exceptionally better, but nighttime driving will be safer.

TM
msg: making racing safer By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down
0 5 4
Michigan Rearview: august 12, 2019
because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People
health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.
“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”
An MSG Partner – Brain Armor Motorsports Safety Group is planning to partner with The Healthy Brain Co. on a mission to positively impact the health and wellness of the brain – 86 billion neurons at a time. Brain Armor products are clinically proven, evidencedbased nutritional formula designed for the sole purpose of building strong, healthy brains through

improved structural integrity and enhanced cognitive performance. Dr. Julian Bailes has helped design the product, which includes some of the most
Michigan Rearview: august 12, 2019
researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”

Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner
N
ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side. Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.” Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance. “I always had a beagle growing up, and when I
0 5 8
Michigan Rearview: august 12, 2019
was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.” Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free. “They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said. “They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”
