NASCAR Slaps Bubba Wallace with Huge Penalty In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes a look at all the big stories in NASCAR. And it is definitely an exciting week, with the championship just days away at Homestead-Miami. Silly season is coming at us fast, and Eric talks us through the details. First up, Eric finally gives us his take on the situation with Bubba Wallace and his $50,000 fine for intentionally spinning to bring a caution at Texas a few weeks back. The situation has been controversial, despite Wallace’s 0 0 4

unmistakable admission on camera. Eric takes us through the history of these types of penalties, and breaks down exactly why Bubba’s instance is both unique and unprecedented. But that’s not all, of course, as silly season continues in full swing. Eric takes a look at the future of Daniel Suarez and Stewart-Haas. While it might seem guaranteed, Suarez bring his own sponsors, Eric gives us a little more insight on why this remains an open question. All that and more on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

Martin Truex Jr. As The Championship Favorite
W
ith a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series-leading seven victories to his credit in 2019, Martin Truex Jr. is without question the favorite to win the championship on Sunday at HomesteadMiami Speedway. Truex, who captured the 2017 championship and came home as the championship runner-up last season with Furniture Row Racing, is in his first season with Joe Gibbs Racing, where he has flourished big time and built on his success from the past several seasons. Truex and his team come into Homestead with the advantage of having had two full weeks to prepare after clinching a berth in the Championship 4 with a victory late last month at Martinsville Speedway. “I know we’re ready for Homestead and feeling really confident about that,” Truex said. “Excited for Homestead, and I can’t say enough about everybody back at JGR. To put three JGR cars in the Championship 4 is pretty incredible. We’ll see what we can do.”

Some Separation Among JGR’s Drivers And Crew Chiefs
O
ne of the biggest keys to the success Joe Gibbs Racing has enjoyed in 2019 has been the steady flow of information sharing among the organization’s four Monster Energy Series teams. However, things have been different this week and will continue to be so this weekend, with three JGR drivers in the hunt for the title. “I would say there will be some separation this week,” team owner Joe Gibbs said after last weekend’s race at ISM Raceway where Denny Hamlin became the third JGR driver to earn a spot in the Championship 4. “Guys will be making preparations. The crew chiefs in particular, we all meet, and we’ll meet tomorrow. But I would say that will be different. But I think our preparation and everything, there will be some division this week. I would say at the racetrack, obviously, it’s going to be, you know, our three teams going for it as hard as they can, each one of them.”

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

Kyle Busch’s Longshot Bid For A Second Championship
I
n terms of Championship 4 experience, no one has more of it to lean on than Kyle Busch, who on Sunday will make his fifth consecutive appearance as a championship finalist in the seasonending race. That’s the good news for the driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. The notso-good news is that Busch has now gone 21 races without a premier series victory, and history has proven that to prevail among the Championship 4, winning the final race is all but required. So how does Busch go to South Florida this weekend and do what he hasn’t managed to do in the past 21 races? “Yeah, thanks for the reminder,” the 2015 Monster Energy Series champ said of his lengthy drought. “Somehow, some way, if it works out, it was meant to be with our M&M’S Camry. If it doesn’t, then it’s not. Hopefully, the sun will come up for another day.”

Kevin Harvick Leaning On His Experience
A
mong the four title contenders, Kevin Harvick is tied with Kyle Busch for fewest wins — four —in 2019. So does that mean Harvick should be considered an underdog entering Sunday’s winner-take-all season finale in South Florida? Hardly. The fact is that no driver has been stronger in the second half of 2019 than Harvick, whose four victories have all come since the season’s midway point. It’s also not Harvick’s first rodeo, so-to-speak; since NASCAR introduced an elimination-style playoff for its premier series five years ago, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver has failed to qualify for the Championship 4 only once, winning the title in 2014 — the year that NASCAR debuted the Championship 4 format. Harvick, who joined SHR the year of his first championship, finished second in 2015 and third in 2017 and 2018. The combination of all these factors give Harvick an excellent chance to leave Homestead-Miami Speedway with the big trophy on Sunday night.

Denny Hamlin’s Possible Birthday Celebration For The Ages
T
hree of this year’s Championship 4 drivers are former champions of NASCAR’s premier series. The lone non-champion of the bunch is Denny Hamlin, who punched his ticket into the Championship 4 with a dominant victory in last weekend’s elimination event at ISM Raceway. While it’s impossible to measure a driver’s desire, the simple fact that Hamlin is pursuing his first championship while his fellow title contenders are chasing their second could give him a leg up when it comes to extra motivation. The reality is that Hamlin wants to win a championship really bad, and at age 38, he’s running out of opportunities to claim the sport’s highest prize. He’s also been painfully close before, finishing runner-up to Jimmie Johnson in 2010 and third in 2014. If you believe in karma, it doesn’t hurt Hamlin’s chances that Sunday is his 39th birthday. It would certainly be a birthday party for the ages if Hamlin won the championship.

By Jared Turner ▶▶ denny Hamlin. None of the four championship finalists come into Homestead with more momentum than Denny Hamlin, who earned his way into the Championship 4 with a dominant victory last weekend in the Arizona desert. Hamlin, the only of the four title contenders who has yet to win a title, also won’t be lacking in desire. ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Mired in one of the longest droughts of his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series career, Kyle Busch will arrive at Homestead in a most unusual position — that of the championship underdog. Busch is a former champ and a four-time race winner in 2019, however, so to underestimate him or write him off would be foolish. ▶▶ Kevin harvick. Kevin Harvick has one win, one pole, 10 top-five finishes, 16 top-10s and has led a total of 373 laps in 18 career premier series starts at Homestead. His average start there is 12.3, his average finish is 6.6, and he has a lap-completion rate of 99.9 percent. All these numbers bode well for his championship chances this weekend. ▶▶ Martin truex jr. Martin Truex Jr. has finished second and first at Homestead the past two years, respectively. To win the championship on Sunday and be crowned champ for the second time in three seasons, he will need to continue his front-running ways at the South Florida track — where he’s making his first start as a member of Joe Gibbs Racing and going up against two JGR teammates. ▶▶ Joey logano. Eliminated from title contention last weekend at ISM Raceway, Joey Logano won’t get to compete for a second consecutive championship this weekend. He will, however, have the opportunity to contend for a second consecutive win at Homestead, where he took the title in dramatic fashion one year ago with a memorable drive to victory.

O
n July 2, 2011, David Ragan, driver of the No. 6 RoushFenway Racing Ford, collected his first-career Cup series victory with a thrilling green-white-checkered finish in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Ragan started from the fifth position and was strong throughout the race. He moved past Ryan Newman of RCR Enterprises for the lead on lap 163 before three multi-car crashes extended the race to 170 laps. Teammate Matt Kenseth stayed behind Ragan and helped keep him out front for the last eight circuits. Ragan led 15 laps among 25 drivers that swapped the lead a race-record 57 times. Kenseth held on to the second position with Joey Logano, driver of the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, finished third with Kasey

Kahne of Red Bull Racing fourth and Kyle Busch of JGR in fifth. “There’s not a better place to do it than Daytona,” Ragan said in post-race interviews. “We’ve been so close so many times and finally we’re here. It is a special race and we’re very fortunate to get our first win here. “We made a pact with our teammate Matt Kenseth that we’re going to work together through thick or thin. We wound up actually being in the lead on the last restart, and that was a winning moment for us to be able to start on the front row.”

It was announced in January that Jones was moving to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West where he would wheel the No. 6 for Bob Bruncati’s Sunrise Ford Racing with former driver Bill Sedgwick as crew chief. crew member profile: Ben prince “I never really thought I’d be doing this,” Prince said. “I was in the military for 10 years and got hurt overseas. When I returned, I went to NASCAR Technical Institute where they had a pit crew class. I don’t look athletic now but I was then because of the military background.” Prince completed the course and was employed by the Excalibur Pit School. He has also worked with many teams over the years, such as BK Racing, RCR Enterprises, RoushFenway Racing and Germain Racing beginning in December of 2018. Having been a part of the family trucking business, Prince obtained his own commercial driver’s license for many years. “Driving for this team reminds me of how I was able to help take care of my guys in the

military,” Prince said. “Doing this sort of brings me back to the brotherhood of doing that.” Prince is usually home two days per week depending upon the location of the race. During the week, he works to change and update parts on the truck in relation to the track that’s next on the schedule. “It’s usually go, go, go,” Prince said. “Aside from stocking the truck, I clean the floors, clean the cabinets and keep everything maintained. “The pressure situation comes for me if we blow an engine. That means getting the new engine out, getting the engine hoist out and getting all the fluids that are needed. It’s the same with changing a rear gear. It’s pretty high pressure.”

MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven
0 5 6

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and
health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate
Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in
0 5 8

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
