n a season that offered more than its share of surprises but ultimately saw the sport’s top drivers and teams come to the forefront, Kyle Busch captured his second championship at NASCAR’s premier level and in so doing cemented his place as one of the greatest drivers of this generation. Following are the five biggest takeaways from the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. By Jared Turner

Winning Is The Only Recipe For Keeping A Ride
I
f 2019 revealed anything, it was that winning races is the only guarantee of keeping a ride in NASCAR’s premier series. Competing for unheralded Leavine Family Racing, Matt DiBenedetto enjoyed a career season with seven top-10 finishes that included three top-fives. Yet when it came time for the team to sign a driver for 2020, it went with Christopher Bell — a Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR Xfinity Series driver whom JGR was eager to promote to NASCAR’s top division. JGR has a technical alliance with LFR and wants to bring Bell into the fold as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Richard Childress Racing said farewell to Daniel Hemric after just one season, opting to go with back-to-back Xfinity Series champion Tyler Reddick for 2020. Stewart-Haas Racing, meanwhile, cut ties with Daniel Suarez after one season to make room for Xfinity Series hot shoe Cole Custer. What did DiBenedetto, Hemric and Suarez all have in common? They failed to win in 2019.

This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! The Trend Toward Early Retirement Isn’t Slowing Down
I
t used to be that it was common for drivers to race well into their 40s, often even driving past the age of 50. Not so anymore. In 2019, the trend toward early retirement continued. Citing a desire to spend more time with family, both Paul Menard and David Ragan announced midseason that 2019 would be their last year as full-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers. Ragan, 33, and Menard, 39, both had several years of competitive racing left in them but were simply burnt out by the marathon-style schedule that consists of 36 points races and stretches from mid-February to mid-November. By calling it quits before the age of 40, and, in Ragan’s case, before the age of 35, both Menard and Ragan won’t have to miss spending time with their children that they otherwise would have missed had they continued driving for a few more years. NASCAR should really sit up and pay attention to this when it comes to future scheduling.

Kyle Busch Saved His Best For Last
A
s strange seasons go, they don’t get much stranger than the one Kyle Busch had in 2019. After starting out the year on fire with four wins in the first 14 races and top-10 finishes in the first 11 races, Busch went 21 races without a trip to Victory Lane and raced in the shadow of two of his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates — Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin — who consistently carried more speed and whose teams consistently demonstrated better execution through the summer months and into the fall. But thanks to the plethora of playoff points he amassed with his early-season victories, Busch managed to easily make the Championship 4. Entering the seasonending race as an underdog, Busch rose to the occasion when it mattered, winning the race and the championship in convincing fashion. “To save the best for last and to come into Homestead and score the win and score the championship is what it’s all about,” he said.

Jimmie Johnson’s Slide Toward Irrelevance Continues
F
or the second consecutive season, Jimmie Johnson failed to win a race. Only this year, he missed the playoffs, too. That’s a bitter pill to swallow for a seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion who from 2002-2017 never won fewer than two races in a season. This season was one of Johnson’s worst ever from a statistical standpoint as he finished a career-low 18th in the standings and recorded only three top-five finishes and 12 top-10s in 36 starts. With 2020 being a contract year for Johnson, the veteran driver has openly admitted that he has yet to make up his mind about whether he will retire at season’s end or sign another contract with Hendrick Motorsports, which has secured the services of Ally — Johnson’s primary sponsor — through the 2023 season. “I know everybody would like me to be in the car to 2023 and even past that, but I just haven’t made that decision yet,” Johnson said.

This Was, Quite Simply, The Year of JGR
H
as there ever been a season in NASCAR where an organization displayed the level of dominance from top to bottom that Joe Gibbs Racing did in 2019? Quite possibly no. The four-car organization founded by three-time Super Bowl-winning coach Joe Gibbs set a NASCAR modern era record this season with 19 victories that included triumphs in three of the sport’s biggest races — the Daytona 500, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and the Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. In addition, JGR placed all four of its drivers in the playoffs and three of its drivers in the Championship 4, with JGR driver Kyle Busch winning the championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway over second-place finishing teammate Martin Truex Jr. JGR’s other Championship 4 driver, Denny Hamlin, finished fourth in the standings, while JGR youngster Erik Jones placed 16th in points. In winning his second championship in five seasons, Busch gave Joe Gibbs his fifth title as a car owner in NASCAR’s premier series.

Just Sayin’ Kyle Busch had some touching moments with his wife, Samantha, and son, Brexton, following his championship win.
Love Him Or Hate Him, Kyle Busch Isn’t Going Anywhere By Jared Turner
L
ike so many legends before him, Kyle Busch is loved or hated by the masses that make up NASCAR’s fanbase. It’s easy to understand why. He’s brash. He’s cocky. He’s aggressive. And he’s unapologetically a sore loser. However, Busch’s greatest “offense” in the eyes of those who loathe him is the simple fact that he wins. Way. Too. Much. Earlier this season, Busch reached a milestone that will likely never be reached again, winning his 200th NASCAR national series race. Talk about being in rarefied air. Only one other driver — “The King” himself, Richard Petty — can claim such a distinction. On Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Busch became just the 16th driver in NASCAR history to win multiple championships at the sport’s premier level, joining the likes of Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and others who’ve forever left their mark on the sport. Although there were some touching moments during Busch’s postrace celebration — like when he let 4-year-old son Brexton hop in his No.

18 Toyota — Busch seemed unusually subdued, almost as if he expected this to happen. Turns out Busch was anything but unemotional. Rather, he was just preserving his villainlike reputation. “I remember taking the white flag and crossing underneath that,” he said later. “I had some tears rolling down my eyes for the last lap and was just like, ‘Come on, man. We’ve still got to finish this thing; don’t be such a sis.’ How was my last lap time? I don’t even know.” That’s Busch. Unwilling — even for a second — to appear weak or sentimental. This is why the fans who love him love him. And it’s also why the fans who detest him detest him. But no matter which side of the Busch ledger you sit on, here’s the reality: At the age of 34, he’s got a lot more wins and probably at least a couple more championships left in the tank.

MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES IN REVIEW
Kyle Busch won the 2019 regular-season and Playoffs championships.
Jimmie Johnson, who did not qualify for this year’s Playoffs, has won seven Cup titles matching the all-time series championship record held by NASCAR Hall of Famers Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt. And while Busch’s Margin of Victory would indicate a seemingly dominant day, the truth is the four title contenders – Busch, Truex, StewartHaas Racing’s Kevin Harvick, who finished fourth and the third JGR driver, Denny Hamlin, who finished 10th – all kept Sunday’s contest honest. Although each of the four led multiple laps, in

His commanding 4.578-second victory over Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Martin Truex Jr. and Erik Jones makes Busch only the second multi-time Cup champion currently in the sport.

MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES IN REVIEW the end it was a competition between the JGR teammates Busch and Truex for the big trophy. Busch led the race five times for 120 laps and Truex held point four times for 103 laps. Truex won Stage 1 and Busch won Stage 2. Busch took the lead for good with 44 laps remaining and his win earned the Gibbs’ team its 19th overall victory, it’s best single season output. For Busch, who won the regular season championship with four wins but hadn’t hoisted a trophy since early June, this was a huge affirmation of drive and talent. “Everybody always says you never give up and we’re no different,” Busch said. “Sometimes we may not be the best, sometimes we may not have the right track position. Today we had a really good car and I could race around and move around. That’s what’s so special about HomesteadMiami Speedway, is the ability to put on a show. “There’s always your doubters, there’s always your haters,” Busch said smiling. “You know what, this one’s for
the Rowdy Nation because you guys are the best. Thank you so much. It was an action-packed afternoon for the championship foursome – on track and in the pits. And the pit action arguably was as decisive as the work on track. Truex had to recover from a rare but major pit road miscue. While pitting on Lap 121, the normally Straight-A No. 19 pit crew mistakenly put the right side front tire on the left side of Truex’s Toyota and the left side tire on the right side. He had to come back in and get that corrected, ultimately
going down a lap. But he was the “lucky dog” – first car a lap down - on a caution flag 17 laps later. That put him back on the lead lap and he worked his way forward from there coming up just short – the championship runner-up for the second straight season. After climbing out of car on pit road after the race, Truex leaned back against the driver’s side window before taking questions from reporters – the frustration and disappointment obvious. “These things don’t come around every day,” the 2017 champion said. “Second two

MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES IN REVIEW years in a row definitely stings a little, but the fact that we have one is still really a big deal. It’s hard to win these things. “Congrats to Kyle and the 18 guys. It’s a huge accomplishment just to get here I feel like. Yes, sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t. It just wasn’t our day.” Pearn was equally unhappy and said he can only remember that kind of random mistake happening once before – years ago at Pocono, Pa. “Tough to swallow,” Pearn said. “I felt like everyone did a great job and executed set-up wise and car-wise. Credit to the 18 team [Busch] they did a great job and you can’t take away anything from what they did.” Hamlin, who started from pole position, also had a pit issue when his team decided to gamble with a large piece of tape on the front grill that instead of helping, ended up causing the car to overheat and smoke. He had to pit briefly in the waning laps to get that off. He went back on track in 19th position with 46 laps remaining and still rallied to a 10th-place finish. NBA legend and Hamlin’s 0 2 0
Cole Pearn was frustrated with the No. 19 team’s second-place finish.
close friend Michael Jordan was on hand at Homestead to help Hamlin celebrate should he earn his first series title. The only member of the Championship 4 without a series championship yet, Hamlin was understandably disappointed with the outcome – but he was also notably positive after the race, choosing to focus on the success this year, heartened by how close he came to the big trophy. He won six races, including his second Daytona 500, led the championship standings at one point during the Playoffs and earned his Homestead shot with a fantastic must-win clutch victory at Phoenix a week ago. “I told you at the beginning of the week, we’re going to celebrate our year,” Hamlin said. “Our year was fantastic in every way you can think of, and it just didn’t pan out in one race in our favor. And, he added, “I’m excited about next year, I really am. It’s not like I’m going to go through the offseason upset or sad. I’m looking forward to having the momentum that we took through this year with a first-year crew chief and we’re going to win a lot, like a lot, next year. “I just think that we’ll have another opportunity. There’s no question.”

Tyler Reddick, 23, becomes only the seventh driver to win back-to-back Xfinity Series championships.
Reddick’s second championship puts him in elite company by holly cain
F
rom the season’s beginning on the Daytona high banks to Saturday night’s very final laps of racing at Homestead-Miami Speedway the 2019 Xfinity Series championship battle was intense; ultimately coming down to a contest of speed, skill and bravado among a familiar lineup of drivers who combined to win 22 of the season’s 33 races. And for the second consecutive year, it was Californian Tyler Reddick who hoisted a hard-earned Homestead race trophy and celebrated his second straight Xfinity Series championship. He led a race best 84 of the 200 laps Saturday and ultimately prevailed in a good ole NASCAR “slingshot” move that decided an exciting nailbiting lap-by-lap duel in the closing minutes with title challenger Cole Custer. Reddick took the lead for good with 19 laps remaining and the checkered flag 1.038-seconds ahead of Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Custer and rookie Chase Briscoe. The other two championship eligible drivers - eight race-winner Christopher Bell and Justin Allgaier finished fifth and 14th, respectively.

Reddick, 23, becomes only the seventh driver to win back-to-back Xfinity Series championships – a list that includes some of the sport’s greatest names such as Sam Ard, Larry Pearson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. And Reddick is the first driver to earn the consecutive titles since Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in 2011-12. What also distinguishes Reddick in championship lore is that he is the only driver to earn Xfinity Series titles in back-toback seasons for two different teams. He earned this season’s championship driving the No. 2 Richard Childress Chevrolet. Last year he drove for the JR Motorsports. The joy Reddick showed celebrating this impressive accomplishment was honest and exuberant. And it was hardearned. This year Reddick, Bell
XFINITY SERIES IN REVIEW and Custer combined for 21 wins. The veteran Allgaier won at Phoenix last week to secure his chance to chase a championship. Last year Reddick’s championship win was considered by many to be an underdog triumph. Although he had been consistent enough to earn a shot in the Championship 4, he had only two career Xfinity wins when he arrived in South Florida last November. This year – even after switching race teams – Reddick quickly re-established himself as a championship favorite. His winning performances didn’t take anyone by surprise. While Bell, who drives the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, quickly showed himself to be a dominant driver again this year. Custer answered the ante all year himself winning seven times. And Reddick came into Homestead with five wins and the regular season championship – his 23 top-five and 26 top-10 finishes were most on the season. “It was perfect, it came down to us three,” Reddick said of his fellow championship contenders. “And that Stage 3 before the caution [flag] we were battling like we have all year long. 0 2 6
Tyler Reddick is the only driver to earn Xfinity Series titles in back-to-back seasons for two different teams. “It was just awesome we were able to come out on top of the deal. It’s been a lot of fun racing them and I’m looking forward to racing them and a lot of other talented drivers on Sunday.” That the season finale featured the same kind of competitive zeal that characterized such an ultra-competitive championship run. “It was on us to give the guy the equipment to contend with,” said his crew chief Randall Burnett. “He can elevate a car from third or fifth to a win or at least a pretty good shot at it.” And that’s exactly what happened Saturday night. The win seems the perfect send-off for Reddick, who will move up into the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driving Childress’s No. 8 Chevrolet. He will join both Custer (No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford) and Bell (No. 95 Leavine Family Racing Toyota) in what will surely be one of the most talented rookie classes. “I think as a driver I learned a lot about myself,” Reddick said of the 2019 season. It was the fifth series championship for team owner Richard Childress tying Joe Gibbs Racing for the most season titles in Xfinity Series history. “He’s an amazing talent and I saw that before he won his first championship, his first race,” his team owner Richard Childress said. “We’re so excited. I just felt if we could get here we had a great shot at winning the championship and the talent he has I’m excited for next year as I’ve been in a long time.”

he young guns will have to wait.Matt Crafton, a 43-year-old veteran of 19 full seasons in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series, took home his third championship with a second-place finish in Friday night’s Ford EcoBoost 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Crafton claimed the title without winning a race this season, but that was all but irrelevant as Crafton moved within one championship of series leader and NASCAR Hall of Fame Ron Hornaday Jr. “I guess I finally got out of the wheelchair and got up one the wheel and got it done,” said Crafton, who crossed the finish line 1.569 seconds behind race winner Austin Hill but a comfortable 9.201 seconds ahead of Ross Chastain, who finished fourth in the race and second among the Championship 4 drivers. “One step closer to what Hornaday’s done, and they called us the underdog.”

Crafton exhibited a mixture of elation and defiance as he celebrated in Victory Lane. Almost an afterthought among pundits entering the race, Crafton schooled his younger Championship 4 competitors with a No. 88 ThorSport Racing Ford that improved throughout the race. That others discounted his chances clearly was a motivating factor for Crafton. “There was nothing sweeter, to be honest,” Crafton said. “It was that little jab in the side—and I don’t know if I needed that, but it just ticked me off. And I just said, ‘I’m going to prove you really, really wrong tonight.’ “I knew I was going to do whatever I had to do for every one of these guys, for (team owners) Duke and Rhonda

GANDER OUTDOORS TRUCK SERIES IN REVIEW (Thorson) and everyone who worked hard, but I said it was that little bit extra poke.” Though fired up by the slight, Crafton had to exercise the patience of a veteran when Hill passed him for the lead on Lap 112 of 134. “Once they told me the 24 (championship contender Brett Moffitt) was nine seconds back, and we were gapping him by three-tenths (of a second) a lap, I was like, ‘I need to look at the big picture here and not take a chance of losing this championship. Let’s just ride right here—race as hard as I could without doing anything dumb to put the thing in the fence.” Winning the title without winning a race didn’t bother Crafton in the least. “I’ll sleep very, very well all winter—with the trophy,” he said. Crew chief Junior Joiner, who has been with Crafton for all three of his championships— the first two coming back-toback in 2013 and 2014—echoed that sentiment. “We didn’t win the race, but gosh, darn it, we won the war,” Joiner said. 0 3 2
Matt Crafton moved within one championship of series leader and NASCAR Hall of Fame Ron Hornaday Jr.
The youth movement did have its moments on Friday night. In his eighth Truck Series start of the season, 19-year-old ARCA champion Christian Eckes secured the seventh owner’s championship for Kyle Busch Motorsports with a third-place finish, a day after Eckes was announced as one of KBM’s full-time drivers for next year. Eckes couldn’t have claimed the owner’s title, however, if it weren’t for the efforts of a veteran driver. Crafton made his first start in the Truck Series in 2000, running only his debut race at Auto Club Speedway that year. Greg Biffle won the Truck Series title that season, and it was Biffle whom KBM team owner Kyle Busch coaxed out of retirement to run one race in the No. 51 Toyota at Texas. Biffle won in his only start, and it was that victory that qualified the No. 51 for the owner Playoffs. “I just thought an old retired guy might be able to get it done— and he did,” Busch said after Friday night’s race. Coincidentally, Crafton is the first Ford driver since Biffle in 2000 to win a Truck Series championship.

MS Racing continued its winning ways in 2019. This time, it was with 16-year-old Sam Mayer. Mayer, who hails from Wisconsin, took control of the K&N Pro Series East, being crowned as the champion in car No. 21. The Chevrolet squad won the second race of the year at Bristol Motor Speedway. From there, the team set sail, winning three more contests at Iowa Speedway, Bristol in August and the season finale at Dover International Speedway. Mayer had an impressive 11 top fives and top 10s in 2019, topping runner-up Chase Cabre, who won a pair of races (at Memphis and Loudon) for Rev Racing. But he came up 39 points shy of winning the title. Meanwhile, former NHRA racer Tanner Gray tied for third in the standings with Spencer Davis, with both drivers winning one race each in 2019. Derek Kraus won twice on the year, with Max McLaughlin and Ty Gibbs also picking up one victory each. Best Race:

Kraus’ fourth-place average finish elevated him to the top at a rapid place, defeating rookie Jagger Jones by 49 markers. Kraus was victorious at Tucson, Douglas County, Meridian and Bakersfield. Jones won at Roseville, his lone triumph on the year, but was a model of consistency with eight top fives. His Sunrise Ford Racing teammate Trevor Huddleston also won at Irwindale and Evergreen. But Coby returned to the Modified Tour with a vengeance this year, determined to win his sixth title and fifth in six seasons. That’s exactly what he did, starting with a triumph in the season opener at Myrtle Beach. While Bonsignore dominated at times, winning six races, Coby’s consistency proved to be the difference maker. The driver of the No. 2 machine had three more wins (at Stafford, Seekonk and Thompson), enough to win the title by a mere eight markers, even though Bonsignore won the season finale at Thompson. Hezemans, who’s from the Netherlands, didn’t enter victory lane until the eighth contest of the year at Autodrom Most. But once he earned that triumph, three more visits to the winner’s circle ensued, with victories in his home country and two in Germany. His late-season rally, featuring 11 top 10s total, led to his first championship, ending Alon Day’s streak of two-straight titles. Day started the year with three wins in the first five races, but cooled off as the season rolled on to finish fourth in the standings. NASCAR iRacing Pro Series Speeds to Dover Bowlin Dodges Twisted Metal for the Win By M atteo M archeschi
O
n Tuesday, November 12th, the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Series hit the track once again, this time for 140 laps at the concrete mile of Dover International Speedway. On pole was Bob Bryant of the Drill Aisle, alongside Justin Bolton of the TEAM. Graham Bowlin, winner last time out at Richmond, started all the way back in 37th. On the start, it was Bryant grabbing the lead, with teammate John Gorlinsky behind. On lap 13, Gorlinsky grabbed the lead. Bryant then began to lose positions steadily as the laps ticked by. On lap 39 the caution came out for the first time, after Bryan Blackford was hit in the left rear by a rapidly advancing Graham Bowlin. Pit stops followed, and Gorlinsky retained the lead, with second place now inhabited by Nathan Lyon. On the restart, though, Jeremy Allen jumped to second. Ray Alfalla moved swiftly to third past Lyon. Another caution came quickly, with most of the field hitting pit road again. Several, though, stayed out, led by David Shutt. Allen quickly passed Shutt and the others who stayed out just before the caution flew once again, this time for a pileup mid-pack. This incident left Allen

up front, beside Lyon and Shutt. Allen maintained the lead, but disaster struck for another frontrunner: Gorlinsky. Contact with Benjamin Nelson sent Gorlinsky hard into the outside wall, ending his shot to take victory. Another caution followed, prompting pit stops. Chris Shearburn inherited the lead, and maintained it as yet another caution flew. The yellows just kept coming and the pit strategy just kept changing. However, there was one constant through all this: Graham Bowlin’s ascent through the field. By lap 80, he was inside the top five, and rose to second over the next ten laps, as the cautions continued to come out. Another yellow just past lap 100 mixed up the pit strategy as Eric Smith and Timmy Hill stayed out. The chaotic restart that followed allowed Bowlin to grab the lead. Wreck after wreck haunted the last 40 laps of the race, but Bowlin stayed strong on each restart, capturing his second consecutive victory and strengthening his points lead. The Pro Series hits the track again on Tuesday, November 19th, at 9 PM eastern time at the Charlotte Motor Speedway oval.

Radio Flyer Wagon Clocks World Record Speed MedI a Release
A
Guinness World Record was set last Thursday at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Driver Apollo Timbers, 33, of Sedalia, Missouri, set a world record of 30 miles-per hour-for the world’s fastest Radio Flyer wagon. (Since there was no previous record or attempt, any speed attained would have set a world record.) The world record attempt was produced by Kevin Schaller of Craftsmen Industries of St. Charles, Missouri. Craftsmen fabricates special displays and vehicles, including the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Speed was monitored by officers from the Glen Carbon, Illinois, police department. The outside air temperature was 42 degrees (sunny, slight breeze).

The world record attempt has a noble cause: to aid Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis. Years ago, Schaller, as a single father, was aided by Shriners Hospital when his son was admitted there for treatment. “They lived their mission of providing the best of care for my family when I was at my lowest in terms of financial ability,” said Schaller. “I’ll never forget that, and I’ll never stop trying to pay it forward. The thing I remember most about those fearful moments of having a sick child was the smile on his face as he was transported through the hospital in a donated Radio Flyer wagon. Even when we both were scared, those moments in that wagon, my son got to be a kid, not just a sick kid.” The driver, Timbers, himself was a “Shriners kid.”

MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and
health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate
Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
