2009 vs 2019: NASCAR’s Highest Paid Drivers In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp tackles a little different subject matter than he normally does with a look into the highest paid NASCAR drivers. Using a recently published Forbes list, Eric looks at who’s making what in the Cup series, as well as comparing it to what some might call the golden age of NASCAR, 2009. The names on 2019’s list come from both the easily expected category as well as the surprising. While the veterans with a long track record appear, owing to their experience and seniority, there are some staple names of 0 0 4

the sport that are missing. There are also some younger drivers who appear on the list. Your mileage may vary whether you expected to see some of them or not. The big shockers come when comparing the current season’s list of salaries to 2009. There are obvious names like Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Grodon, and Tony Stewart. But it’s the size of the numbers that might shock you. What’s the biggest difference between 2009 and 2019? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

things to watch at New Hampshire

I

t might be hard for this weekend’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to top the finish of last Saturday night’s race at Kentucky Speedway, where brothers Kurt and Kyle Busch engaged in a truly epic lastlap battle for the win. Nevertheless, here are five things to watch for in Sunday afternoon’s Foxwoods Resort Casino 301. By Jared Turner

One And Done

F

or many years, the summertime race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway was treated by some drivers and teams as a glorified test session of sorts in preparation for when the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series returned to NHMS for its annual playoff race held in September. All that changed last year, however, when Las Vegas Motor Speedway began hosting a playoff race and essentially took New Hampshire’s second date on the series schedule. Now, instead of fine-tuning for a fall playoff race, drivers and teams have no reason to give anything less than their absolute best in the summertime race at NHMS. With the track now hosting just the lone Monster Energy Series event each year, the summertime race takes on new meaning and involves extra bragging rights, because there’s only one driver at the end of the season who can truly say he conquered the “Magic Mile.”

A Rejuvenated Kurt Busch

N

o matter what ultimately happens this weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, this much is certain: No one will show up with a bigger wind at his back than Kurt Busch, who last weekend at Kentucky Speedway nipped his younger brother, Kyle, at the finish to go to Victory Lane for the first time since joining Chip Ganassi Racing for the 2019 season. So pumped up was Busch after winning at Kentucky that he admitted during post-race interviews that he is entertaining the possibility of returning in 2020 to race another full season — something he didn’t sound too keen on back during the winter when he signed with CGR. Now, the 2004 champion of NASCAR’s premier series heads to New Hampshire Motor Speedway, a track where he’s scored three victories, including one in the fall of 2004 that ultimately jumpstarted his unlikely run to the series title.

A Possible End To Kevin Harvick’s Dry Spell

A

t least on the surface, all the stars seemed be lining up for Kevin Harvick to have a great weekend at New Hampshire. Aside from being a three-time winner of NASCAR premier series races at the 1.058-mile track, Harvick has been especially potent here in recent trips. The 2014 series champ has won two of the past four New Hampshire races, including the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ most recent visit last summer. Harvick has also finished in the top five in six of the past eight premier series races held in The Granite State. Already solidly positioned for the playoffs based on where he sits in the standings, Harvick would still like a win to completely cement his playoff status for 2019. The driver of the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford seems to slowly be chipping away at having more consistent speed this season, after starting out the year behind the eight ball a bit.

2

A Fired Up, Hungry Kyle Busch

U

ndoubtedly still stewing from his heartbreaking defeat at the hands of older brother Kurt at Kentucky Speedway last weekend, Kyle Busch will be seeking some redemption this weekend at a track that’s been one of his better ones over the years, and especially in recent years. “Loudon is a Martinsville-like short track, but it’s just over a mile,” said Busch, who scored his third and most recent New Hampshire win in 2017. “It’s a little more spread out, but there’s some rooting and gouging going on because it’s a one-lane track and everybody fights for that particular groove. To be fast at Loudon, you have to have good brakes and you have to roll the center really well and get that good forward bite off the corners and make sure it sticks. The biggest thing about Loudon is, you keep losing front turn-in and that’s why the brakes go away.”

Joey Logano’s Homecoming

B

efore Joey Logano was a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion, he was a two-time winner at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. And, before Logano won at NHMS for the first time — during his rookie season of 2009 — the Middletown, Connecticut native had a special connection with the venue that he considers to be his home track. That connection has never been stronger than it is today. “I started my first Cup race there, watched my first one there, won our first one there,” Logano said. “It makes it a special place any time I come here.” While Logano has myriad reasons for loving the NASCAR track closest to his hometown, the warm reception he receives whenever he shows up at the 1.058-mile oval sets it apart from all other venues. “I always joke that when I come up here to New Hampshire, I feel like I am Dale (Earnhardt) Jr., because everybody likes me,” Logano said.

Kurt Busch

▶▶ Kyle Busch. After coming out on the losing end of a last-lap duel with older brother Kurt last weekend at Kentucky Speedway, Kyle Busch will undoubtedly arrive at New Hampshire this weekend with no shortage of inspiration to put his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in Victory Lane.

▶▶ Kurt Busch. Still flying high after his thrilling drive to victory last Saturday night at Kentucky, Kurt Busch will look to build on that success and keep his momentum going this weekend at New Hampshire — a track where he’s a three-time winner but hasn’t won since 2008. ▶▶ Joey Logano. Joey Logano loves racing at New Hampshire Motor Speedway because of the track’s relatively close proximity to his hometown of Middletown, Connecticut. He’s also no stranger to success at NHMS, having scored his first career victory there in 2009 with Joe Gibbs Racing and then returned to the Winner’s Circle in 2014 with Team Penske. ▶▶ Kevin harvick. Still seeking his first triumph of 2019, Kevin Harvick has won two of the past four races at New Hampshire and is the most recent Monster Energy Series winner at the 1.058-mile facility. That makes the Stewart-Haas Racing driver a clear favorite this weekend, regardless of his current dry spell. ▶▶ Martin Truex jr. For whatever reason, Martin Truex Jr. has never been able to quite put it all together at New Hampshire, where he’s notably winless in 25 premier series starts. Perhaps Truex’s first New Hampshire start as a member of Joe Gibbs Racing will be his big breakthrough.

Jimmie Johnson won at The Brickyard in 2012 after a wreck on lap 132

A Master at Indianapolis Johnson Wins Fourth-Career Brickyard 400 By Ben white

O

n July 29, 2012, Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, won the Crown Royal 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for his fourth-career victory at the storied 2.5-mile track. The El Cajun, Calif. native started the race from the sixth position and led five times for 99 of 160 lap distance. Johnson’s biggest scare came on lap 132 when Joey Logano spun his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, bounced off a JTG Racing Toyota driven by Bobby Labonte and crashed into Roush Fenways’s Matt Kenseth, who tried to slip through the wreck. Johnson led the final 29 laps and finished four seconds ahead of Kyle Busch in second.

New hampshire Preview: July 18, 2019

Johnson was excited as the reality of the moment sank in his cool down lap. Fans gave him a huge ovation for collecting such a prestigious win, the 58th of his NASCAR career. “Yeah, man, it’s a huge moment, and I really enjoyed the lap around in the race car,” Johnson said of his cool down lap. “…With this fourth win, I’m able to join racing legends, my heroes, people I’ve looked up to my entire life, so to join them is a huge, huge honor. I know how much it means to Rick, and thankful for all of his support and everybody at Hendrick Motorsports, and thankful to Chad and my guys.”

rowing up in the mill town of Kannapolis, North Carolina, Daniel Hemric idolized local racing legend and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt. The youngster often dreamed of one day racing at NASCAR’s highest level and possibly driving for Richard Childress Racing, the team that fielded the iconic No. 3 Chevrolets in which Earnhardt enjoyed so much success. Today, at age 28, Hemric is literally living his dream as he chases the rookie-of-the-year trophy in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series behind the wheel of Richard Childress Racing’s No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro. Born Jan. 27, 1991, Hemric’s racing journey started in a go-kart at age 5 and he eventually advanced through the Bandolero and Legend Car ranks, winning numerous races and championships. In 2010, Hemric claimed $250,000 – the largest first-place prize in Legend Car racing history – when he won the Legends

DRIVER PROFILE: tyler reddick

Tyler Reddick has 3 Xfinity Series wins in 2019

The Perfect Scenario Tyler Reddick finds a home with RCR By Joseph Wolkin

J

ust weeks before Tyler Reddick won the 2018 XFINITY Series title, he announced he was moving from JR Motorsports to Richard Childress Racing. The move has been an exceptional one, featuring several wins and consistency unlike anyone else in the field.

▶▶ What’s the year been like for you? “It’s been unreal. You want the year to go well, but you don’t ever see it go that well right off the bat with new guys. It’s been great, but it’s made us really hungry and it’s made us want to keep going.” ▶▶ What makes RCR such a good fit for you? “The confidence I had coming off a championship definitely helps. My mental state, being where it was, I figured out what I needed to do. My mental state shifted from points racing. I understand where I need to keep myself in a racecar during the race and for the playoffs. They were pumped to have someone jump in their car who they knew would give every effort that they have to win.” 0 3 6

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

0 3 8

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”

The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Dr. Cormier is a member of the American Association of

Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His busy practice involves performing complex brain and spinal operations on patients from around the country that seek out his surgical acumen.

Cormier crafted his strategic partnership with the ARCA racing series’ safety initiative Program to form a “Motorsports Healthcare Education Plan” Medical car. nascar PETS

Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner

N

ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side. Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.” Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance. “I always had a beagle growing up, and when I

0 5 2

New hampshire Preview: July 18, 2019

was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.” Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free. “They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said. “They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com
