Playoff Bubble Trouble After New Hampshire In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through his review and analysis of Sunday’s Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The big takeaway from the race was Kevin Harvick’s first win of the season. As fans have seen, Harvick’s pit crew has struggled to perform, often saddling the team with penalties. But the victory this weekend may signal a change to that (it was crew chief Rodney Childers who made the play on the final caution). 0 0 4

New hampshire Rearview: July 22, 2019

But beyond just the race at New Hampshire, this weekend will have some repercussions on the playoff chase as we reach the midpoint of summer. Notably Jimmie Johnson now sits outside the Top 16 cutoff. Nine drivers, now including Harvick, have sealed their position in the playoffs. Eric takes us through all the drama of both the race this weekend and the playoff bubble trouble! Who’s going to make it to Miami, and who will be watching at home with us? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

Only this time, it was Kevin Harvick scoring the victory and formally punching a ticket into the playoffs by outmaneuvering a hard-charging Denny Hamlin. Here are five takeaways from Sunday’s Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway:

Bubble Trouble For Seven-Time

J

immie Johnson arrived at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on the right side of the cutline for making the playoffs. But thanks to a broken water pump belt that ultimately resulted in a loss of power steering and an extended stay on pit road, the seven-time NASCAR premier series champion left the Granite State 17 points on the wrong side of the cutline. Now, with just six races left before the playoff field is set, Johnson will have to play catchup to have the opportunity to race for a record-breaking eighth championship come September. After finishing 30th at New Hampshire, Johnson couldn’t hide his disappointment. “Well, it was certainly a letdown, to say the least,” he said. “I assume some debris got in the pulley system and it took out my power steering and the water pump as well. So, it’s just unlucky on that front. Certainly the wrong time of the year to have some bad luck.”

Temper, Temper

S

hort tempers were the order of the day all weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, as it seemed that drivers were unusually testy with one another. Blame it on the intense summer heat or the simple fact that the length of the season may be starting to take its toll on everyone, but several drivers made no attempt to mask their frustration and anger toward fellow competitors. Feuding combos included those of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Erik Jones, Clint Bowyer and Martin Truex Jr., and Paul Menard and Harrison Burton (Menard and Burton had an intense conversation after Saturday’s Xfinity Series race). Perhaps the saltiest of the bunch was Stenhouse, who blamed Jones for wrecking him during Sunday’s race. “The 20 (Jones) ran over us,” Stenhouse said. “He’s been known to do that to us a couple times now lately. He’ll get one coming his way before it’s over with, or at least before I’m through with it.”

Alex Bowman Made Something From Nothing

A

ny way you slice the weekend, it was a rough one for Alex Bowman, who went through not one but two race cars prior to the green flag ever waving. But Bowman, who ended up starting the race in what had been the backup car for teammate Jimmie Johnson, finished 14th in spite of everything. The respectable result was less than satisfying, however, to the secondyear driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. “I wouldn’t call 14th relatively good,” said Bowman, who clinched a berth in the playoffs with a victory at Chicagoland Speedway last month. “We had a pretty bad day, really struggled on restarts. We put a lot of right rear spring in it trying to get it to turn in the center of the corner, and it was just real popped-up on restarts. I don’t know. We did what we could. We will move on to Pocono and be better there.”

Ryan Newman Was New Hampshire’s Big Winner In Terms Of Points

A

trying day for Ryan Newman at New Hampshire ultimately came to a pleasant conclusion when the driver of the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford overcame engine troubles and a pitroad miscue to finish seventh and, more importantly, move into a position where he would qualify for the playoffs if the 16-driver field was set today. “Honestly, that was the most fun I’ve had all year in a race car, and that’s mostly because we had a good, competitive Ford,” Newman said. “I slid through the (pit) box. We had a bad coil wire. We had a bunch of things that set us back. I’m proud of the team effort, and it’s something to build on, for sure.” After entering the day 17th in points and the first driver on the wrong side of the playoff cutline, Newman is now 15th in points and has a 21-point cushion over Jimmie Johnson, who is 17th in the standings.

Call For No Tires Was The Difference-Maker For Kevin Harvick

W

hile Kevin Harvick certainly had a good car at New Hampshire, virtually anyone who watched the race would agree that Harvick’s No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford wasn’t the class of the field. But Harvick was the one celebrating at day’s end, thanks in no small part to a strategy call by crew chief Rodney Childers to leave his driver on the track when many of the lead lap cars came to pit road under the race’s final caution period. Making the most of being out front in clean air, Harvick used the track position to his advantage and withstood a furious last-lap challenge from Denny Hamlin to score his first victory of 2019. “We were just in a bad spot there with track position, and I didn’t think we were gonna win from where we were at, so sometimes you have to make those decisions,” Childers said. “Kevin did a great job on the restart of holding his own.”

Just Sayin’ Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin waged an epic battle for the win at New Hampshire.

Recent Finishes Have Injected New Life Into 2019 Season By Jared Turner

S

ay what you want about the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ oft-maligned 2019 rules package, but could the finishes from three of the past four races have been any more terrific? At Chicagoland Speedway — the weekend before Justin Haley’s fluke victory at Daytona where rain dictated the final outcome — Alex Bowman captured his first career Monster Energy Series win in dramatic fashion by passing Kyle Larson for the top spot with a bold move in the final 10 laps. Then, two weekends ago at Kentucky Speedway, fans witnessed the Busch brothers — Kurt and Kyle — put on a show for the ages as Kurt edged his younger sibling in a last-lap battle for brotherly bragging rights. Then, just when it seemed like the Busch brothers’ epic duel probably couldn’t be topped, Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin engaged in a thrilling, door-slamming, last-lap slugfest on Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, where Harvick’s Ford ultimately beat Hamlin’s Toyota to the finish line by about a car length. It was a fitting conclusion to a race that had featured a little bit of everything, including some major paint trading among several notable drivers and a direct threat of retaliation by Ricky Stenhouse

0 1 8

New hampshire Rearview: July 22, 2019

Jr., who issued a harsh rebuke of Erik Jones after contact between the two drivers culminated in Stenhouse making an early exit resulting from a hard encounter with the fence. What more could drivers and fans really want from this aero package, at this point? The playoffs aren’t even here yet, and nail-biting finishes have suddenly become the norm — not the exception to the rule. After a humdrum first third of the season, NASCAR’s top division desperately needed a pick-me-up. Seemingly out of nowhere, it’s happened over the course of the past month. For the sake of fans everywhere and the overall health of the sport itself, let’s hope this trend continues.

Tribute to a NASCAR Crew Chief Danny B Talks, a regular fixture of the online NASCAR community, is back with a new video in his popular Need a Minute series, this time looking back at the events of the past weekend. First up, Danny pays tribute to NASCAR crew chief Nick Harrison, who sadly passed away this weekend. Harrison was crew chief of Kaulig Racing’s No. 11 in the Xfinity series. Harrison worked in the sport for over 10 years, alongside iconic drivers like Kurt Busch, Paul Menard, and young gun Austin Dillon. 0 2 0

Danny also brings up Kaulig Racing’s AJ Allmendinger, who is slated to drive for the team at Watkins Glen. Could we see him in victory lane? We also have a host of other stories, including on Hailie Deegan’s social media account mystery, Nike’s new tribute pair to Charlotte Motor Speedway, Lionel’s new policy on diecasts, and of course, Danny B’s thoughts on the racing this last weekend at New Hampshire.

Racing with Discipline Online Taking on iRacing’s Many Series By M atteo M archeschi

i

Racing, since its release in 2008, has become a haven for all kinds of race car drivers, from road racers to oval racers to, more recently, dirt track racers. One of the best parts of the sim is the ability to race in all the disciplines with your subscription. If you’re into NASCAR, you can do that, but you can also try your hand at road racing or dirt racing. Not only does this give you a whole lot of variety for your money, there’s also plenty of lessons to learn from each discipline, many of which can be applied to the others. For example, throttle control can be learned on dirt, and then applied to both road and asphalt oval. Drivers like Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, and Kyle Larson have taken this approach to make the leap from dirt to NASCAR using this skill, among countless

0 3 0

New hampshire Rearview: July 22, 2019

others they learned on the dirt track circuit. Even within disciplines there’s plenty of content to enjoy, and plenty of series that aren’t as popular, but are still tons of fun if you race at the most popular times. Silver crowns, asphalt sprints, modified, late models, and super late models are some of the less popular, but still incredibly fun series that many drivers don’t consider right away. Each series has a fairly small but passionate community, and some plan certain times to race, so that they can get full fields if the series isn’t terribly popular. In that way, they’re kind of like leagues, but with official races instead of being just-for-fun. Overall, there’s plenty of different series to run in iRacing, not just your usual NASCAR series, and other disciplines you might enjoy. Who knows, you might find some sprint car talent you didn’t know you had, or maybe you’ll discover a love for rallycross! You never know until you try, so take a swing at it.

health and wellness Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training.

msg: making racing safer TM

By dan guttenplan

M

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

0 5 2

New hampshire Rearview: July 22, 2019

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”

The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Dr. Cormier is a member of the American Association of

0 5 4

Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His busy practice involves performing complex brain and spinal operations on patients from around the country that seek out his surgical acumen.

New hampshire Rearview: July 22, 2019

Cormier crafted his strategic partnership with the ARCA racing series’ safety initiative Program to form a “Motorsports Healthcare Education Plan” Medical car. Utilizing the strength and demographic reach of NASCAR and the ARCA racing series, their mission is to provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. nascar PETS

Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner

N

ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side. Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.” Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance. “I always had a beagle growing up, and when I

0 5 6

New hampshire Rearview: July 22, 2019

was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.” Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free. “They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said. “They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”
