Penske Takes Over IndyCar, JGR’s Xfinity Lineup Revealed In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through the biggest storylines in NASCAR for the week. And this week has one of the biggest, not just for NASCAR, but seemingly impacting the entire gamut of American motorsports, from NASCAR to Indy to IMSA. This week Roger Penske announced that he was purchasing IndyCar - all of it, actually, along with Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The move has huge implications across all of motorsports, but Eric’s take focuses heavily on the move’s impact 0 0 4

on NASCAR. Namely, what it means for Roger Penske himself and his role as a day-to-day race strategist for his teams. One of the major impacts on NASCAR that Eric takes us through is the possibility of a double header race combining both NASCAR and IndyCar events. Some of the possibilities include Indianapolis Motor Speedway, naturally, along with Texas and even Charlotte’s Roval. All that plus huge Xfinity news from Joe Gibbs Racing and more on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

More Fights To The Finish?
A
s the season nears its conclusion, the patience of more and more drivers seems to be wearing thin. Witness the post-race altercation two weekends ago at Martinsville Speedway where championship contenders Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin came to blows on pit road after initially engaging in what appeared to be a civil discussion about their hard-fought battle for position on the track in the closing laps. With Sunday’s event at ISM Raceway being an elimination race and neither Logano nor Hamlin having locked up a spot in the Championship 4, it’s quite possible that the two could tangle again — only this time, the stakes and pressure are even higher. Logano and Hamlin must be careful not to get so caught up in racing each other and settling a personal score that they forget to look over their shoulder, however, as there are three drivers behind them in the standings who — with a win — could kick them out of the Championship 4.

Kevin Harvick Holding Nothing Back
W
ith a commanding victory last weekend at Texas, Kevin Harvick locked up an automatic berth in the Championship 4 and will have the opportunity to race straight up for the championship on November 17 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. So the driver of the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford need not sweat his result this weekend in Phoenix. If he wins, great; if he comes home dead last, well, it won’t have any bearing on his standing for Homestead. With literally nothing to lose, Harvick has no reason to hold anything back in pursuit of another win — which is a pretty scary proposition for the competition since he owns a record nine Monster Energy Series victories at ISM Raceway and most recently went to Victory Lane at Phoenix in the spring of 2018. With no reason to race the least bit conservatively, Harvick will undoubtedly go for broke and let the chips fall where they may at a place that’s already practically like his personal playground.

Chase Elliott’s Longshot Attempt To Reach The Championship 4
L
iterally nothing went right for Chase Elliott in the first two races of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Round of 8. So maybe — just maybe — Sunday’s third and final race of this round will be the one where it all finally comes together for the driver of the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. After suffering mechanical issues two weekends ago at Martinsville and slapping the wall this past weekend at Texas, Elliott finds himself ranked last among the eight drivers still alive in the championship fight. To secure one of the two remaining spots up for grabs in the Championship 4, Elliott has to win Sunday’s event at ISM Raceway. As a three-time winner in 2019 and winner of six races over the past two seasons, the second-generation driver has certainly proven himself capable of creating some magic. But he will need to come through in a big way in the Valley of the Sun to keep his title hopes alive.

This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! The Underdogs: Kyle Larson and Ryan Blaney
A
lmost everyone loves a good underdog, and to find one — actually two — in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ Round of 8, you don’t have to look very hard. Together, Kyle Larson and Ryan Blaney have combined for just two points-paying victories this season, so it’s not surprising that both drivers find themselves in a points hole and needing to win Sunday’s race in Phoenix to make it into the Championship 4. Throw in the fact that neither driver has ever scored a Monster Energy Series victory in the Valley of the Sun, and the odds of Larson or Blaney advancing become exponentially longer. Then again, it would be shortsighted to write either of them off, as they are competing for top teams and have proven themselves capable of rising to the occasion in other situations when they were virtually left for dead. At the very least, Larson and Blaney can find solace in the fact that it’s not over until it’s over.

Denny Hamlin’s Spirited Mission To Advance
S
ince NASCAR instituted a 16-driver, elimination-style playoff for its premier series, Denny Hamlin has qualified for the Championship 4 just once — in 2014, the first time a NASCAR season culminated with a winner-take-all finale where four drivers raced straight up for the title. Since then, Hamlin has come close but been unable to reach the Championship 4 in four attempts. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver’s next opportunity to make it back will be Sunday at ISM Raceway, where he needs to do one of three things: win the race, make up 20 points on Joey Logano or make up 22 points on Kyle Busch. All of the above are a tall order but none are outside the realm of possibility for Hamlin, who comes into the weekend having won five races in 2019 — second only to Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr. Rest assured: Hamlin will stop at nothing to grab one of the two remaining transfer spots for Homestead.

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kevin Harvick. Between his time at Richard Childress Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing, Kevin Harvick has captured a record nine wins at ISM Raceway. Can he make it 10 on Sunday? The 2014 series champ comes into the weekend carrying the momentum and good vibes of his Championship 4-clinching victory last weekend in Texas. ▶▶ Kyle busch. Kyle Busch has yet to win a race in the playoffs and seems discouraged by the lack of speed in his No. 18 Toyotas over the past several months. Yet, as things stand today, Busch would still qualify for the Championship 4. He’s also won the last two races at Phoenix. Hope, therefore, springs eternal for Busch this weekend. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. Martin Truex Jr. became the first driver to clinch a berth in the Championship 4 race at Homestead when he scored his series-leading eighth victory two weekends ago at Martinsville Speedway. Like Kevin Harvick, Truex need not worry about how he finishes at Phoenix, so there’s no reason not put it all on the line. ▶▶ Joey logano. Looking to become the first winner of back-toback NASCAR premier series championships since Jimmie Johnson took the 2010 title, Joey Logano first has to make sure he gains entry into the Championship 4. Currently, he’s 20 points to the good, but that doesn’t mean he can let his guard down this weekend. ▶▶ Denny hamlin. After a poor performance at Texas dropped him to the wrong side of the cutline for Championship 4 advancement, Denny Hamlin has ground to make up in Sunday’s elimination race at ISM Raceway. His surest route to Homestead? Simply win this weekend at Phoenix.

Tony Stewart sealed the deal for his 2002 Cup Series championship with an 18thplace finish at Homestead.
Ugly Outing, Big Finish Stewart Wins First Career Cup Title at Homestead By Ben white
O
n Nov. 20, 2002, Tony Stewart, driver of the Joe Gibbs Racing Pontiac, went into the final race of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway 89 points ahead of Mark Martin, driver of the Roush Racing Ford. That day, he won his first of three career NASCAR Cup series championships (2002, 2005, 2011). Stewart started the 267-lap, 400-mile Ford 400 in sixth but was quickly faced with obstacles that continued throughout the race. Leaders Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. set a fast pace at the front. Stewart fell a lap down near the halfway point to leader Joe Nemecheck, driver of the Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, when his car’s chassis set-up didn’t

work well under him. Stewart entered the season-finale with three victories, 15 top-fives and 21 top-10s but high hopes of adding a win didn’t materialize. He ultimately sealed the deal by finishing in the 18th position, 38 points ahead of Martin at race’s end. His crew chief Greg Zipadelli and crew continually worked on the car during pit stops to make it drivable. “This was an ugly day, but we never gave up,” Stewart said in post-race interviews, as recounted by Motorsport. com. “We ran hard, got our lap back and got the spots we needed. I was so nervous I couldn’t tell him (Zipadelli) what to do to fix it.”

wenty-six-year-old Ross Chastain has been the busiest driver in NASCAR this season, running a mix of races in each of the three national series while contending for the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series championship. Born Dec. 4, 1992, in Alva, Florida, Chastain is a fifthgeneration farmer whose family is a major producer of watermelons. Introduced to the sport by his father, Ralph, who competed in the American Race Truck Series as a hobby, Chastain first climbed behind the wheel of a race car at the age of 12. Competing on a limited budget – a theme that would follow him as his progressed into the upper levels of the sport – Chastain accumulated more than 50 short-track victories and earned Late Model championships at Orlando Speedworld and Charlotte County Motorsports Park. Chastain was 18 years old in 2011 when he made his NASCAR

Truck Series debut at Indianapolis Raceway Park with sponsorship from the National Watermelon Board. Driving for teams with limited resources, Chastain’s big break came late last season when he was hired to run three NASCAR Xfinity Series races for Chip Ganassi Racing. Those starts resulted in a pole at Darlington and a victory at Las Vegas. This year, Chastain has won multiple NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series races with Niece Motorsports and also added a NASCAR Xfinity Series victory while driving for Kaulig Racing.

Sitting at a desk all day is just something I can’t do.” Baker has worked with Team Penske since early 2014 and has been contracted to work with several race teams as a crew member in NASCAR ARCA Menards competition, the Xfinity Series and Monster Energy Series. He has seen many cars come down pit road for service during his career and works hard with each top to become the best he can be as his job. Each person’s role over the wall is critical for a perfect stop. “When you know a pit stop is coming, what

goes through your mind is when the crew chief goes over what adjustments to make, how many tires, and how much gas he wants,” Baker said. “Sometimes it matters how much fuel he wants because of the fuel weight. You just calculate in your mind when it stops and getting the can plugged in or changing gas cans and making sure everything went smoothly. “It’s a little bit of an adrenalin rush, but after doing it for five or six years maybe not as much,” Baker said. “You still a few butterflies more than nervousness. MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven
0 5 8

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and
health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate
Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
