Denny Hamlin’s Biggest Win of his Career In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives his reaction to the Bluegreen Vacations 500. We finally know the Championship 4 heading into HomesteadMiami next week, and Eric talks us through the gravity of what we saw this weekend. Notably, Denny Hamlin was Eric’s personal pick to make it to the playoffs, and now that Hamlin is up against teammates Kyle Busch and Martin Truex, Jr., along with Kevin Harvick, Eric talks us through how we got here, and what it 0 0 4

means for the careers of these iconic drivers. Eric also recently interviewed Denny Hamlin on Out of the Groove, and Eric fills us in on the context of his win. Eric also takes us through the rest of the playing field, including some context on how the 2019 package is affecting the on-track product at tracks like Phoenix. And of course, Eric puts it all on the Groovy Gauge. Check out that and more in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

oming into Sunday’s Bluegreen Vacations 500 at ISM Raceway in Phoenix, six drivers were competing for two remaining spots in the Championship 4. The big winners were race winner Denny Hamlin and second-place finisher Kyle Busch, who punched their ticket to Homestead while four others walked away dejected. Following are the five biggest takeaways from the final race in the Round of 8. By Jared Turner

Chase Elliott’s Round of 8 Was a Total Train Wreck

S

ometimes when it rains, it pours. Chase Elliott certainly found that out in the Round of 8, enduring devastating setbacks in all three races and failing to reach the Championship 4. After a mechanical issue at Martinsville and a wreck at Texas put him in a huge points hole heading into Sunday’s elimination race at ISM Raceway, Elliott faced a must-win situation in the Arizona desert. After running near the front and looking like he might have a chance to win, a tire failure proved to be his ultimate undoing on lap 166. Elliott finished 39th, once again falling short in his quest to be among the premier series’ four championship finalists. “I feel like we were in a good position to run solid,” said Elliott, who appeared to have one of the fastest cars in the field before his accident. “I’m not sure why we had a tire go down. It’s unfortunate. These last three weeks have been pretty rough.”

Kyle Busch Quietly Took Care of Business

C

oming in to ISM Raceway, Kyle Busch had the luxury of two potential pathways for advancing to the Championship 4. One was to win the race and in so doing punch an automatic ticket to Homestead. The other path was to merely maintain his position in the standings and qualify for the Championship 4 on the basis of points. The second option turned out to be Busch’s ticket, as he finished second on a day when Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin had the dominant car and became the third playoff driver to score a win in the Round of 8. “We were a little bit slower than the 11 (Hamlin) all weekend long,” Busch said. “We kind of saw it in practice just a little bit. They had a really good car, did a really good car, and they executed well. Overall, though, the guys did a great job. Our Camry was good this weekend, just not great.”

Joey Logano Didn’t Have Enough to Hold on

E

ntering Sunday’s elimination event, Joey Logano knew that his worst-case scenario would be for one of the drivers behind him in the standings to get the win and punch an automatic ticket into the Championship 4. But unfortunately for the driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford, that’s exactly what happened. With the victory, Denny Hamlin became the third driver to lock up a spot in the Championship 4, leaving only the fourth and final transfer spot up for grabs. That final spot went to Kyle Busch, who came into the race ahead of Logano in the standings and finished ahead of him as well. Logano, who finished ninth in Phoenix, now must face the reality that he won’t have the opportunity to compete for his second consecutive series championship next weekend in Miami. “It stinks,” Logano said. “I don’t know how disappointing it is. Put a number on it. It hurts.”

Ryan Blaney Nearly Did The Unthinkable

F

acing extremely long odds of advancing to Homestead, Ryan Blaney continued his Cinderella run through the playoffs with an impressive drive on Sunday at ISM Raceway. It wasn’t enough, however. Needing to win the race to make it to Homestead as one of four championship finalists, Blaney finished third — a close-but-no-cigar kind of outcome for the Team Penske driver, who began the playoffs as a championship longshot but earned a lot of respect and attention when he won at Talladega in the Round of 12 to punch a ticket into the Round of 8. At Phoenix, Blaney ultimately came up two positions short of where he needed to be to keep his title hopes alive. “We ran third,” he said. “I thought we got better all day. I’m really proud of the whole group for today, but the whole playoffs as well. It stinks that you miss it, but a solid day.”

Denny Hamlin Delivered An All-Time Clutch Performance

N

eeding nothing less than a victory at ISM Raceway to advance to the Championship 4, Denny Hamlin and his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing team went for broke in the Arizona desert and walked away big winners. One of the fastest drivers all season, Hamlin qualified third at ISM and took the lead for the first time on lap 73. He went on to spend a race-high 143 laps out front and pace the field for the final 62 circuits, holding onto the lead through a late caution period and restart to win for the sixth time this season but first time in the Round of 8. Now, Hamlin will have a chance to race straight up for his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship against three drivers who are former champions but are no more talented or hungry to leave South Florida with the championship trophy in their possession.

Just Sayin’ Bubba Wallace admitted to intentionally causing a caution during the race at Texas.

Time For NASCAR To Enter The No-Spin Zone By Jared Turner

I

n NASCAR, there are hard and fast rules as spelled out in the official NASCAR rule book. Meanwhile, there are others that aren’t so clear. Take, for example, in Section 10.8 where it states that officials can impose a penalty for “intentionally causing or attempt to cause a caution period.” Notice, it doesn’t say that officials WILL impose a penalty for intentionally bringing out a yellow flag. Nor does it say what the penalty will consist of if, in fact, there is one. Based on this reading of the rule book, it’s fair to say that it’s widely frowned upon — but not explicitly prohibited — for a driver to deliberately bring out a caution in hopes of influencing the race in a way that is more favorable to himself or a teammate. This happened last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway when Bubba Wallace appeared to loop his No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Chevrolet around to trigger a yellow flag that would ultimately be to his advantage. Though there was no concrete evidence to suggest this was, in fact, what Wallace had done, some of his fellow drivers —

0 1 8

Phoenix Rearview: november 11, 2019

most notably, playoff driver Kyle Larson — accused Wallace of deliberately bringing out the caution. NASCAR, though aware of the accusations, chose not to penalize Wallace, however, until six days later when Wallace — with a big smirk on his face — admitted to intentionally spinning. The penalty, which consisted of a $50,000 fine and 50-point reduction for Wallace, was a stiff one and was certainly deserved. NASCAR simply can’t have drivers putting other competitors at risk by deliberating wrecking, even if it amounts to little more than a solo spin. Now, it’s time for NASCAR to make this practice non-negotiable. The rule book, as it pertains to this issue, simply needs to be buttoned up. NASCAR just can’t afford to let this be a gray area any longer.

n Tuesday, November 5th, the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Series headed to the three-quarter-mile Richmond Raceway for its third race of the season. The series would be hitting the track for 200 laps. It was Cody Byus starting from pole position, with Deadzone Racing pilot Kollin Keister on his outside. Byus grabbed the lead early on, and proved to be the dominant one as the race progressed. It was clean and green until lap 78, when Matthew Wright got loose and slid into Jeremy Allen, wrecking them both and collecting Ryan Lowe and Benjamin Nelson. This kicked off a round of pit stops, but it was the status quo up front, with Byus leading Keister. That first yellow were quickly followed by two more before lap

By lap 165, the caution flag had fallen a total of seven times, but Byus maintained his position up front, but with a new challenger, Deadzone’s Graham Bowlin, to his outside for the lap 171 restart. After a couple laps of battling, Bowlin secured the lead, the first time Byus had been passed on track all night. Three cautions flew in the closing 20 laps, the final of which saw Ray Alfalla send Byus up the track and into the wall. As Byus got off the wall, he was sent spinning, ruining an

incredibly impressive run. His closest competitor gone, it was smooth sailing for Bowlin on the overtime restart. Despite being followed closely by teammate Keister, Bowlin kept his cool and brought home the win. The victory gave Bowlin the points lead over former points leader and Daytona winner John Gorlinsky, who was one of many to encounter issues in the closing laps. The eNASCAR iRacing Pro Series season rolls on this Tuesday, November 11th at 9 PM eastern as the series heads to the concrete mile at Dover International Speedway.

MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven

0 5 6

Phoenix Rearview: november 11, 2019

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and

health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate

Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

0 5 8

Phoenix Rearview: november 11, 2019

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
