things to watch at pocono BACK TO THE POCONOS The stakes are elevated with the Playoffs approaching t’s been less than two months since the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series last competed at Pocono Raceway, but it’s already time for the drivers of the sport’s top division to head back to the 2.5-mile track in the Pennsylvania mountains. Here are five things to watch for in Sunday afternoon’s Gander RV 400 at the place known as the “Tricky Triangle.”

An End to Chase Elliott’s Summertime Blues
N
o matter how you slice the proverbial pie, it’s been a rough summer for fan-favorite Chase Elliott, who has now gone six races without a top-10 finish. The site of Elliott’s most recent top 10? Pocono. That’s the good news. In fact, Elliott currently holds a streak of five consecutive top-10 finishes at the Pennsylvania track — where he finished fourth last time out. “June’s race wasn’t our best performance there, but, hopefully, we can improve upon that,” the Hendrick Motorsports driver said. “I felt like we were just in the right place at the right time to capitalize on the last restart and get a top five. I feel like we’ve had some better cars there and some better days overall, but it all has to go your way, and you will take what you get.” Elliott’s average Pocono finishing position of 10.86 is sixth-best all-time among drivers who’ve raced at the track.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s Attempt at Retribution
W
hile race winner Kevin Harvick and other strong finishers left New Hampshire last weekend feeling at least relatively happy, others weren’t in such jovial spirits. Perhaps the most agitated of the bunch was Ricky Stenhouse Jr., whose Roush Fenway Racing Ford made an early exit from the race when it hit the wall after contact with Joe Gibbs Racing driver Erik Jones. Later, after emerging from his wrecked car, Stenhouse angrily hinted that some retaliation toward Jones may not be too far into the future. Perhaps it could even come this weekend at Pocono. “He’s run over us a couple times, but that’s his deal,” Stenhouse said. “He’s gonna have to deal with it at some point.” Does Stenhouse believe he must do something to prove to Jones that he won’t tolerate being wrecked again? “I will — outside of the car or inside of the car. One of the two,” Stenhouse said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

The Battle of the Bubble Boys
W
ith six races to go until the playoff field is locked in, it’s a cluster near the bubble where 17thplace Jimmie Johnson — the first driver on the wrong side of the cutline — trails 15th-place Ryan Newman by just 21 points. Within striking distance for Newman — and likewise not too far on the right side of the bubble are 14th-place Erik Jones and 13th-place Kyle Larson, who are 28 and 31 points ahead of the cutline, respectively. Sandwiched in between Newman and Johnson, and clinging to the final transfer spot, is 16th-place Clint Bowyer, who has a 17-buffer on Johnson and trails Newman by an even slimmer four points. Tied with Johnson in points is Daniel Suarez, who technically sits one spot behind Johnson in the standings on the basis of a tiebreaker. All six of these drivers can ill afford to get too comfortable this weekend or at any point over the next six races, unless they clinch an automatic playoff berth with a trip to Victory Lane.

A Pocono-Hungry, Fired-Up Kevin Harvick
I
t took him 20 tries to get to Victory Lane in 2019, but Kevin Harvick finally got it done last weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. With that proverbial money off his bank, Harvick is unlikely to hold anything back this weekend at Pocono — one of the few tracks where he’s never been to Victory Lane. Oh, he’s been close, like four-second-place-finishes-kind-of-close, but for whatever reason, the 2014 champion has never quite been able to close the deal in any of his 37 Pocono starts. That could all change this weekend, especially with him carrying the momentum of his big breakthrough win at New Hampshire. “As we go to Pocono, we obviously want to win there,” Harvick said. “I know that Rodney (Childers, crew chief) and the organization itself have put a lot of effort into that particular weekend, trying to get to Victory Lane and taking that race off the list.”

Kyle Busch’s Quest for the Sweep
N
ot all that long ago, Pocono Raceway was a mystery and a major source of frustration to Kyle Busch. Winless in his first 25 starts at the 2.5-mile track, Busch wondered if he would ever crack the code to reaching Victory Lane at the “Tricky Triangle.” All the wondering and hoping and waiting finally ended for Busch in July 2017, when the Joe Gibbs Racing driver conquered Pocono for the first time. Making his 26th start at this northeastern Pennsylvania facility, Busch won and won big after starting from the pole and leading 74 of 160 laps. Since that day, Busch has picked up two more Pocono victories along with a third-place finish. His most recent Pocono triumph came less than two months ago, when he led 79 of 160 laps and cruised to a reasonably comfortable 2.224-second victory. Can he complete the 2019 Pocono sweep this weekend and make it three Pocono wins in a row?

drivers to watch at pocono
By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kyle Busch. For years and years, Kyle Busch couldn’t win at Pocono Raceway if his life depended on it. These days when it comes to Pocono, it’s like the Joe Gibbs Racing driver can’t lose. A victory on Sunday afternoon would be Busch’s fourth in five Pocono starts. ▶▶ Martin Truex jr. After catching fire beginning near the onethird mark of the season, Martin Truex Jr. has cooled off a bit in recent weeks. Regardless, the 2017 series champion will be a favorite this weekend at Pocono, a track where he’s won twice since 2015 — both with his former team at Furniture Row Racing. ▶▶ Kevin Harvick. Kevin Harvick has come so close to winning at Pocono he can taste it. Four runner-up finishes and seven top fives in his last 10 Pocono starts have the grizzled veteran feeling understandably confident about a potential breakthrough. Being fresh off a win last weekend at New Hampshire doesn’t hurt his outlook, either. ▶▶ Ryan Blaney. Want a dark-horse pick for Pocono? Try Ryan Blaney, driver of the No. 12 Team Penske Ford. Back in June 2017, the second-generation NASCAR driver triumphed at Pocono in the Wood Brothers’ iconic No. 21 car, earning his first premier series win. Now in an even better situation, Blaney absolutely has a chance to do it again. ▶▶ Kurt Busch. Only two weeks removed from his thrilling last-lap victory over younger brother Kyle at Kentucky Speedway, Kurt Busch seems to be peaking at the right time with his first-year team at Chip Ganassi Racing. The 2004 NASCAR premier series champ is also a three-time Pocono winner, which can’t hurt his chances this weekend.

Determined to be Victorious Gordon Wins Emotional Race at Martinsville By Ben white
O
n April 10, 2005, Jeff Gordon, driver of the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, collected his 71st of 93-career victories in the Advance Auto Parts 500 at the half-mile Martinsville Speedway. He sealed the deal after falling three laps down to repair his right front wheel. In the first 50 laps, Gordon pitted three times, first under green and two during under early caution flags to make repairs. Gordon, the leader of 36 laps, gained great respect from the packed crowd of fans in attendance after seeing him come back from near devastation. It was and emotional victory for Hendrick Motorsports since 10 people associated with the organization lost their lives in an airplane crash en route to the track on Oct.

24, 2004. Team owner Rick Hendrick leaned into Gordon’s car in victory to offer a tearful emotional hug. Two confrontations with Kurt Busch, in a Roush Racing Ford, on lap 448 and 464 were Gordon’s biggest threats in the closing laps. After a crash put Busch in the garage one lap down, Busch returned to retaliate but couldn’t keep Gordon from claiming the win. “I’m sorry I hit him,” Gordon said of Busch’s wreck. “We were just two people fighting for one position, and neither one of us was going to give it up. Kasey Kahne finished second with Mark Martin third.

Alex Bowman
Turing his attention to stock cars, Bowman was named rookie of the year in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East following the 2011 season, and he also won a pair of ARCA Menards Series races that same year. He made his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series debut in 2014 and now has more than 130 starts in NASCAR’s premier series. Away from the track, Bowman enjoys working on cars and playing with his dogs, Finn and Roscoe.

Alex Bowman faced the daunting task of replacing one of NASCAR’s most popular drivers when team owner Rick Hendrick selected the Tucson, Arizona, native to drive the No. 88 Chevrolet after Dale Earnhardt Jr. retired from Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series competition following the 2017 season. Now in his sophomore season behind the wheel of Earnhardt Jr.’s former ride, the 26-year-old Bowman is proving Hendrick has an eye for talent as three consecutive runner-up finishes during the season’s first 12 races had him on the doorstep of his first series victory. Born April 25, 1993, Bowman began racing a Quarter Midget at age 7, collecting nine national championships and 165 feature victories in the open-wheel machines through 2006. Midget racing was the next challenge as Bowman won races on both paved and dirt tracks throughout the western states and claimed the USAC National Ford Focus championship in 2008.

Working as a front-end mechanic means making sure all chassis parts of the car from the firewall forward are tight and race ready. “Now it’s mostly changing brakes and wheel studs and upper and lower control

arms,” Zanolini said. “Usually we have the motor guys up there working so we have a system. When he’s on one side of the car I go to the other.” The front brakes on Suarez’ Chevrolets are a main concern to make sure his driver stays safe. “Now we submit the brake package we are going to run before the weekend,” Zanolini said. “For years, you came to the track with a brake package and if the driver didn’t like it we could switch rotor sizes and things like that. At some short tracks we will change to different brake pads for more grip or less grip.”

rom the Navy to NASCAR. It’s an unlikely jump, but Jesse Iwuji took on the challenge of a lifetime. After a few seasons in the K&N Pro Series rankings, Iwuji, 31, is running a part-time Truck Series schedule for Reaume Brothers Racing, and he’s beyond thrilled.
▶▶ What’s your ultimate goal in racing? “The ultimate goal for me is just like everyone else, and that’s to make it to the Cup Series. The biggest thing is getting enough seat time and finding the funding needed to move up. Motorsports is not cheap.” ▶▶ How big is social media for you? “That’s my platform where I have my voice and show people what I like to do. I build a community around myself and I have a loyal fanbase. That’s what sponsors look at. They see who’s following you and how many people are following you. If a company came to me and said they want to be a sponsor, it’s because they see they can have a direct connection to my followers.” 0 3 6

msg: making racing safer TM
By dan guttenplan
M
otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from
0 4 0

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal
health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about
his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”
The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Dr. Cormier is a member of the American Association of

Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His busy practice involves performing complex brain and spinal operations on patients from around the country that seek out his surgical acumen.

Cormier crafted his strategic partnership with the ARCA racing series’ safety initiative Program to form a “Motorsports Healthcare Education Plan” Medical car. Utilizing the strength and demographic reach of NASCAR and the ARCA racing series, their mission is to provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner
N
ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side. Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.” Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance. “I always had a beagle growing up, and when I
0 4 4
pocono preview: July 25, 2019
was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.” Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free. “They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said. “They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”
