Speaking the Truth on Richard Petty Motors, Nashville’s Struggling Venue, and Bristol’s Ratings
I
n this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp lays a heavy dose of truth on NASCAR fans, covering everything from the recent candid interview with Bubba Wallace, Jr. to the doom and gloom hot takes on Bristol’s attendance. First up we have the interview Bubba Wallace, Jr. gave to Matt Weaver at Autoweek. It was in this interview we got the now infamous soundbyte on RPM’s finances, and its effect on the team’s performance. “I think the biggest thing is dollar signs. Over the years we have kind of tip-toed around that, but that’s enough of that. We’re behind on money.”

Eric lays out the context behind RPM’s recent history, as well as Bubba’s, to help us get an idea of what the situation really means, for the team, as well as the driver. But as promised, this is an episode full of truths. Eric also takes us on the twisted journey through the legal tangles, political upheaval, and possible alleged violations. And finally, the truth - maybe - starts to sting a little less when Eric turns his gaze to Bristol’s ratings. Is NASCAR doomed? Or maybe we just haven’t gotten the full context. Watch the episode, and let us know what you think of the ratings.

fter a wild, drama-filled race at Bristol Motor Speedway, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is primed and ready to compete under the lights on Saturday night at Richmond Raceway — an immensely popular 3/4-mile short track that is a longtime favorite among both drivers and fans alike. Here are five key storylines to watch for in the Toyota Owners 400. By Jared Turner

Denny Hamlin’s Return Home
G
rowing up just down the road in nearby Chesterfield, Virginia, Denny Hamlin has a longtime love affair with Richmond Raceway. His success at the ¾-mile short track has made his affinity for RR even stronger. Over 25 premier series starts at Richmond, Hamlin has recorded three victories and finished in the top 10 an impressive 60 percent of the time. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver hasn’t won at Richmond since 2016 but has posted four top-fives in his last five starts here. “We’ve been more hit and miss,” said Hamlin, who finished third in the spring 2018 race but slipped to 16th in the fall. “We were competitive one race here last year and the other one, not so much. It’s really feast or famine for us here at this racetrack.” With two wins in the season’s first eight races, Hamlin looks poised to feast at his home track this time around.

A Confident Kyle Busch
I
f there’s any driver with reason for optimism heading to Richmond, it’s Kyle Busch. In addition to being less than a week removed from his Monster Energy Series-leading third victory of 2019, which came on Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway, Busch is a six-time winner at Richmond and swept last year’s two races at the facility. In fact, the 2015 premier series champ leads all active drivers in premier series victories at Richmond, where he will arrive this weekend as the points leader. “I love Richmond,” Busch said. “It’s one of my favorite racetracks and one of my best racetracks. I love being able to go there and, of course, we put on some pretty good races there. We won four spring races in a row (from 2009-2012), and I would have loved to have made it five or more. It’s a neat racetrack and it’s certainly an excitement track.”

A Rejuvenated Jimmie Johnson
F
or the first time this season, Jimmie Johnson is heading to a racetrack on the heels of backto-back top-10 finishes. Johnson, who finished 10th on Sunday at Bristol after coming home a season-best fifth at Texas, seems to be steadily improving under the guidance of first-year crew chief Kevin Meendering, who replaced the legendary Chad Knaus atop Johnson’s No. 48 pit box after the seven-time Monster Energy Series champion driver endured a winless 2018 season. While Richmond isn’t traditionally one of Johnson’s best tracks (he has just three wins in 34 starts here), the Hendrick Motorsports driver has been solid here in recent times, with finishes of eighth, sixth and eighth, respectively, in his last three Richmond starts. Johnson’s gains in recent weeks seem to be a microcosm of the improvements made by Hendrick Motorsports as a whole, after the company won just three races in 2018 — all of them with Chase Elliott.

Retaliation Time
M
uch like Martinsville and Bristol, Richmond Raceway is the perfect venue for a driver to exact a little revenge on someone with whom he’s perhaps been waiting for the perfect opportunity to settle a score. A look back at Richmond races past reveals numerous moments of chaos and retribution through the years, with one of the most memorable coming back in the spring of 2008 when Kyle Busch wrecked Dale Earnhardt Jr. while the two battled for the lead and win in the closing laps. Busch, who after exiting his car had to be whisked away from the property by security personnel to avoid putting himself in harm’s way, was on the receiving end of a retaliatory bump from Earnhardt Jr. in the fall Richmond race later that year — much to the delight of the vast majority of the fans in the stands. Who will serve some payback on Saturday night?

Hungry Drivers
T
he 2019 Monster Energy Series season has up to this point been largely dominated by four drivers, who have taken turns going to Victory Lane. Those four drivers — Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano — are all former winners at Richmond and certainly stand a decent chance of going to Victory Lane again on Saturday night. But who is most likely to break through if this year’s fearless foursome is denied? The driver with the best shot is probably Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick, whose absence from Victory Lane in the first eight races has been one of the biggest surprises of 2019. Some of this season’s winless drivers who have made notable strides in recent weeks include Ryan Blaney, Kurt Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Chase Elliott. Given Richmond’s penchant for the unexpected, Saturday night’s race could even produce a first-time winner. Stay tuned and prepare to be surprised.

By Jared Turner ▶▶ kyle busch. Kyle Busch has been hands-down the best driver of 2019 and looks to be in great position for another run to the Championship 4 at season’s end. His performance from the past few weeks and his history at Richmond suggest he’s the man to beat this weekend. ▶▶ Denny Hamlin. Raised not far from Richmond in Chesterfield, Virginia, Denny Hamlin seems to always carry a bit of a home-court advantage to Richmond Raceway — a track where he owns three premier series victories and is virtually always in contention for the win, especially in the springtime. ▶▶ Kevin Harvick. Still seeking his first victory of 2019 a season after earning a career-high eight victories, Kevin Harvick might be the driver most eager to get to Richmond Raceway — a place where he has triumphed three times and finished second after starting from the pole last fall. ▶▶ Kyle Larson. At Richmond in the fall of 2017, Kyle Larson earned what remains the only short-track win of his career to date. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver could use a win this weekend to jumpstart his season, which so far has produced nary a top-five finish in eight starts. ▶▶ Joey logano. A two-time Richmond winner, reigning Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano almost always plays well at the Virginia short track. Based on how he’s run this season (five top-10s, including four top-fives, in eight starts), Saturday night’s race should be no exception.

Labonte Wins Prestigious Southern 500 By Ben white
O
n Sept. 1, 1980, Terry Labonte, driver of the No. 44 Stratagraph Racing Chevrolet owned by Bill Hagan, scored a surprise victory in the prestigious Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway in only his second full-time season in NASCAR’s premier Winston Cup Series. The 22-year-old Labonte remained within striking distance in the top 10 throughout the 367-lap race on the 1.366-mile oval. With two laps remaining, the Texas native was two seconds behind leader David Pearson, second-place Dale Earnhardt and third-place Benny Parsons when the trio of drivers hit oil on the track in Turn 3. Pearson, Earnhardt and Parsons slid high and sustained heavy damage. The white and yellow flags were being waved as Labonte moved into the second position behind Pearson. As they drove

back to the start-finish line to complete the race, Labonte saw an opening and edged past Pearson’s badly smoking car by a bumper’s width. Pearson dropped low to block, but Labonte went lower, having the presence of mind and maturity to stay focused on the win. “I didn’t know at that point that Pearson’s car was messed up,” Labonte said in post-race interviews. “About Turn 3, I noticed the smoke coming off his car and I decided to go for it.” Labonte went on the score 21 additional victories and Cup series championships in 1984 and 1996.

Starting in 2003, Custer traveled the country, earning numerous Quarter Midget victories and championships. The young racer graduated to USAC Midgets and Legend Cars in 2010, and he won 15 times in 22 starts en route to claiming the 2011 USAC National Focus Young Guns title. His winning ways continued in 2012 when Custer began racing Late Models, and his attention turned to NASCAR the following season as he won two races during his rookie effort in the K&N Pro Series East. After working through the ranks including nine years in the American Speed Association, Raines made his way into NASCAR’s three top tier series in the late 1990s with 518 starts to his credit. In 2019, his role is to become an extra set of eyes for Suarez as well as any of the other SHR drivers if needed. “Spotting works well for me,” Raines said. “A lot of guys spotted for me when I drove. I’m in the core of racing but not in the high pressure and drama of driving. I’m involved but without
the amount of workload you have when you drive. I enjoy being involved and enjoy helping other drivers. You try to help with information concerning things they can’t see.” The act of spotting high above for those on the track isn’t as easy as it looks, as there is a lot going on to keep the spotter’s mental wheels turning. “You try to look ahead as far as incidents or things or things happening on the race track,” Raines said. “When you’ve been around racing as long as I have you see stuff, that’s when you share things that you think matters.”

msg: making racing safer TM
By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain. “Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.”
0 3 0
Richmond PReview: April 11, 2019
A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back.
health and wellness “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction
therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”
Introducing Brain Armor new product that excites Cormier in terms of improving brain function is the Brain Armor nutritional supplement. The product is the work of Dr. Julian Bailes, a recognized leader in the field of neurosurgery and the impact of brain injury on brain function. The supplement includes Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which help the human brain possess the ability to grow new nerve cells, or neurons. Cormier said that patients tested after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty

Acids were less likely to incur brain-related injuries. Also, patients that suffered brain-related injuries were more likely to recover after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty Acids. “That component of the nervous system is huge,” Cormier said. “We found that people who are rich

in DHA and EPA levels are more protected with regard to brain function. That drew me in. If we pursue that in racecar drivers, we can protect them with a supplement like Brain Armor that includes fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.” Fish oils are also available for purchase over the counter. Cormier said the only downside of ingesting fish oil is that of its blood thinning properties. “Other than that, we haven’t seen any downside,” Cormier said. Find out more at brain-armor.com.

NASCAR PETS
Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner
L
ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”

SURECAN ▶▶ The award-winning SureCan was designed with all of your gas-powered machines in mind. With patented technology, the SureCan offers its user the best experience they have ever had with a fuel can. The flexible spout rotates down more than 180 degrees and fits perfectly into any machine’s fill location, while the thumb-release trigger on top controls the flow. By pulling straight back on the safety trigger and then down on the thumb button, fuel is released immediately while you stay in complete control. When you notice your tank is almost full, slowly release the thumb button and allow the excess fuel to drain from the top of the spout before rotating it back up. No more bending over, tipping your fuel can forward and holding it in an awkward position. The SureCan is a high-quality fuel dispensing machine. Learn more at surecanusa.com. 0 5 6
