Speaking the Truth on Richard Petty Motors, Nashville’s Struggling Venue, and Bristol’s Ratings
I
n this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us an unconventional recap from Richmond. Since he missed most of the first half of the race, he instead taps into his power as a YouTuber, and let’s the entire community contribute their review of the action. Eric turns to his friends on Twitter and actually crowdsources the race. How did the fans in the audience react to the new package at Richmond? Were the drivers able to overcome the tremendous reliance on clean air that we’ve seen so far this year? And what about Richmond’s unique three lane tarmac? With cars able to speed optimally around

all three lanes of the track, it can be extraordinarily difficult to get a run on someone through the corners, thanks to their car having grip in nearly any position or any race line. Eric even turns to some of his fellow content creators in the community, like Apex Off, to find out the actual statistics for this year’s Richmond Race. They look at everything from the number of lead changes historically to Quality and Green Flag passes. But of course, we also have the week’s Groovy Gauge for the Toyota Owners 400. Where did the race rank? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

artin Truex Jr. withstood a furious late-race charge from Joey Logano to prevail on Saturday night at Richmond Raceway, picking up his first victory in nine starts since joining Joe Gibbs Racing for the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. Before NASCAR’s premier division breaks for the traditional Easter off-weekend, here are five lessons learned in the Toyota Owners 400. By Jared Turner

Speeding Penalty Was Too Much For Kyle Busch To Overcome
K
yle Busch entered Saturday night’s race at Richmond as the prohibitive favorite to go to Victory Lane after sweeping last year’s Monster Energy Series races at the ¾-mile short track and winning three of the first eight races in 2019. The early portion of Saturday night’s showdown did nothing to hurt Busch’s chances, as the 2015 series champion won the opening stage, led 101 of the first 131 laps, and looked to have a dominant car capable of cruising to victory. Everything changed on lap 131, however, when NASCAR deemed Busch’s No. 18 Toyota to be too fast exiting pit road. Assessed a tail-end-of-the-longest line penalty four laps later, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver dropped deep in the field and was never able to completely recover. He finished eighth, making it just the third time in the season’s first nine races that he’s failed to come home in the top five.

All Isn’t Well In The Team Penske Camp
N
ot surprisingly, Team Penske drivers Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano have been two of the top performers of the 2019 season. Prior to Saturday night’s race at Richmond, there was no sense of any friction between the two teammates, who have traditionally gotten along well — at least publicly — despite often racing each other hard on the racetrack both this season and in past seasons. Based on a radio transmission during Saturday night’s race, it appears that the teammates’ relationship is perhaps being tested, however. Unhappy with how aggressively Keselowski was racing him at one point in the race, Logano lit into his teammate over the team radio. “It cost us both,” the reigning Monster Energy Series champion said. “Way to go, Brad. Way to freaking go.” Neither driver addressed the situation during post-race interviews, but it will be interesting to see if they are able to put it behind them moving forward.

JGR Is The Cream Of The Crop, With Team Penske In Tow
W
ith exactly one-fourth of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season now in the books, at least two firm conclusions can be made. No. 1 is that Joe Gibbs Racing is in a league of its own, having won six of the first nine races and placed three of its four drivers in Victory Lane. The second conclusion is that Team Penske isn’t too far behind, having won the three races that didn’t belong to JGR and put two of its three drivers in Victory Lane. If the playoffs began today, JGR and Team Penske drivers would occupy six of the 16 playoff slots, with only JGR’s Erik Jones missing out. Even more indicative of the combined dominance of JGR and Team Penske is the fact that only one driver in the top six in points — fourth-place Kevin Harvick from Stewart-Haas Racing — isn’t from the JGR or Team Penske camp.

Kyle Larson’s Season Of Misery Continues
W
hat a miserable season 2019 has been for Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson, a driver widely considered one of the sport’s purest driving talents. That misery continued in a big way on Saturday night at Richmond as Larson finished dead last in the 37-car field after completing only 125 of 400 laps — the result of a flat left-rear tire that sent his No. 42 Chevrolet hard into the wall. Larson, who hoped to bounce back this season after a winless 2018 that followed a breakout campaign in 2017, is 19th in the standings after recording just two top-10 finishes — and no top fives — in nine races this season. “It’s been a pretty crappy start to the year,” Larson said. “We’ve had decent speed. We didn’t have great speed (at Richmond), but on the weeks that we have speed, we still run into issues. I hate the start to the season I’ve had.”

Martin Truex Jr. Has Finally Exorcised His Short-Track Demons
P
rior to Saturday night, Martin Truex Jr. had competed in more than 80 short-track races but never won one in NASCAR’s premier series. So with his breakthrough victory at Richmond, the 2017 Monster Energy Series champion lifted a major monkey off his back. “It feels awesome,” Truex said. “Honestly, (it’s great) to finally get that first win not only on a short track but here at Richmond, at a track where we’ve been so strong the last couple seasons and led so many laps and had some real, real heartbreakers, some that were really tough, some really tough losses. Sometimes those things are hard to get through, but they make you stronger and make you appreciate the good days.” Truex’s Richmond victory was also the first for the driver and crew chief Cole Pearn at Joe Gibbs Racing, the organization they joined this season after several successful years together at Furniture Row Racing.

Logano Was Wise Not To Rough Up Truex At Richmond By Jared Turner
A
s the laps began to wind down in Saturday night’s race at Richmond and Joey Logano began to draw ever closer to the back bumper of race leader Martin Truex Jr., it’s probably safe to assume that virtually everyone watching had a flashback to last fall at Martinsville Speedway when the same two drivers battled aggressively for the lead on the final lap, with Logano ultimately knocking Truex out of the way in the final corner to score the victory. After that race, Truex called Logano’s aggressive move a “cheap shot” and all but guaranteed retaliation. Saturday night at Richmond featured a much different ending, however, as Logano had an opportunity to rough up Truex on the final lap but opted for a more measured approach. “I think he drove me as hard as he could without hitting me, which that’s what I always expect, and that’s kind of how I’ve always raced him,” Truex said. “I guess it was fine. I don’t

know if we’re cool (from their Martinsville run-in), but I certainly have a lot of respect for Joey as a person and his accomplishments, and I really appreciate the way he raced me tonight.” Kudos to Logano for not pushing the envelope with Truex at Richmond. Considering that the reigning Monster Energy Series champ had already won a race this season and punched his ticket into the playoffs, he really stood little to gain — at least relatively-speaking — with a win on Saturday night. It was a much different scenario than last fall at Martinsville, when a win meant punching a ticket to the Championship 4. Logano clearly weighed the cost versus the reward of potentially wrecking Truex at Richmond, and he chose the wiser option. “Just couldn’t get there,” Logano said of his efforts to catch Truex. “Ran out of time. Needed a few more laps.”

As the 200-lap event wore on, though, G2 eSports driver and runner-up in points Keegan Leahy grabbed the lead, and would lead 62 laps in the event. Logan Clampitt, driver for Burton Kligerman eSports, also led 46 laps. Clampitt

Nascar Esports missed the first race of the season at Daytona, and needs to do whatever he can to make his way up in the points. He would end up in fifth, his second top five finish of the season. Up front it was Luza and Leahy, and Luza prevailed as the laps wound down. It wouldn’t be easy for Luza, though, as the caution flew for a wreck involving independent driver Adam Benefiel with only six laps to go, leading to a one-lap shootout to decide it. On the restart, Luza got a great launch, and would go on to win. Behind
him, chaos erupted as Keegan Leahy, who had been battling Team Dillon eSports driver Blake Reynolds for second, smacked the wall exiting turn two, bouncing into Renegades driver Garrett Lowe, and sending Lowe into the inside wall. Reynolds would finish second, followed by Leahy, Williams eSports driver Brian Schoenburg, and the aforementioned Logan Clampitt. The Peak Series will be back on track at the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway on Tuesday, April 23rd at 9 PM eastern time. The race will be live on YouTube and Twitch.

msg: making racing safer TM
By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain. “Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.”
0 2 6
Richmond Rearview: April 15, 2019
A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back.
health and wellness “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction
therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”
Introducing Brain Armor new product that excites Cormier in terms of improving brain function is the Brain Armor nutritional supplement. The product is the work of Dr. Julian Bailes, a recognized leader in the field of neurosurgery and the impact of brain injury on brain function. The supplement includes Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which help the human brain possess the ability to grow new nerve cells, or neurons. Cormier said that patients tested after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty

Acids were less likely to incur brain-related injuries. Also, patients that suffered brain-related injuries were more likely to recover after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty Acids. “That component of the nervous system is huge,” Cormier said. “We found that people who are rich

in DHA and EPA levels are more protected with regard to brain function. That drew me in. If we pursue that in racecar drivers, we can protect them with a supplement like Brain Armor that includes fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.” Fish oils are also available for purchase over the counter. Cormier said the only downside of ingesting fish oil is that of its blood thinning properties. “Other than that, we haven’t seen any downside,” Cormier said. Find out more at brain-armor.com.

NASCAR PETS
Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner
L
ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
