Chase Elliott’s Attempt At A Rebound
N
o matter how you slice it, last weekend’s opening race in the Round of 8 was pretty wretched for Chase Elliott, who finished 36th in the 38-car field after suffering a broken axle on his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Elliott’s problems started well before the green flag waved, when his car had an engine let go during Saturday practice, which forced him to start at the rear of the field. The net result of Elliott’s miserable weekend was finding himself last among the eight playoff drivers, 44 points below the cutline for advancing to the Championship 4. To have the opportunity to compete for a championship with three other drivers in the season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Elliott likely needs to win on Sunday at Texas or the following weekend at ISM Raceway in Phoenix. The good news is that Elliott is no stranger to comebacks, having rallied from a big deficit entering the final race in the Round of 12 to make his way into the Round of 8.

Denny Hamlin vs. Joey Logano Part Two
D
enny Hamlin and Joey Logano have a history of run-ins, going all the way back to 2013 — Logano’s first year at Team Penske after he and Hamlin had been teammates the previous four years at Joe Gibbs Racing. So, when the two old rivals got crossed up in the final laps of last weekend’s short-track race at Martinsville Speedway, no one was surprised. Nor was anyone surprised to see the feud spill over to pit road, where the two drivers engaged in an intense but civil conversation until Logano slapped Hamlin on the shoulder. Understandably, Hamlin didn’t take too well to the physical contact, and it was game on from there as he and Logano came to blows and had to be separated by NASCAR officials and crew members — including a Logano crew member who threw Hamlin to the ground and was subsequently suspended by NASCAR. Have Hamlin and Logano buried the hatchet or will their spat linger at Texas? Stay tuned.

A ‘Happy’ Weekend For Harvick?
K
evin Harvick has won two of the past four races at Texas Motor Speedway, including each of the past two fall races at the high-speed, high-banked 1.5-mile track. So is the StewartHaas Racing driver the favorite to go to Victory Lane this weekend? Harvick could certainly use a win, given the fact that he ranks fifth among the eight remaining championship hopefuls — meaning he is currently not in position to be one of the four drivers who battle for the title in two weekends at Homestead-Miami Speedway. While Harvick’s deficit —14 points shy of the cutline — isn’t so significant that it’s impossible for him to make it to Homestead on the basis of points, his safest route to Championship 4 status is getting a win this weekend at Texas or next weekend at ISM Raceway in Phoenix. Harvick has actually enjoyed even more success at ISM than Texas, so a less-than-stellar day on Sunday wouldn’t be the end of the world, but it wouldn’t be ideal, either.

The Hail Mary Attempt
L
et’s be honest: No one who has followed the 2019 NASCAR season with any degree of interest expects Kyle Larson or Ryan Blaney to be part of the Championship 4. But, bear in mind, most folks didn’t expect them to make the Round of 8, either. Yet, here they are, with a chance over the next two weekends to do something incredible and earn the opportunity to compete for a title in the season-ending race in South Florida. Is it likely that Blaney or Larson will make it to Homestead? Based on what’s happened so far in 2019, the answer is clearly no. But stranger things have certainly happened. While neither Larson nor Blaney comes into Texas as the prognosticators’ pick to go to Victory Lane, a win by either driver wouldn’t be totally shocking. This much is certain: Larson, Blaney and their respective race teams have no reason to hold anything back in their efforts to qualify for the Championship 4.

Martin Truex Jr. Unleashed

ith his victory last weekend at Martinsville, Martin Truex Jr. became the first driver to punch a ticket into the season-ending Championship 4 race at Homestead. Now, Truex finds himself in the enviable position of facing literally no pressure this weekend at Texas and next weekend at ISM Raceway. If he wins either race, he’ll get a nice trophy and a pile of money. If he finishes dead last, it will have no bearing on his standing for Homestead, since the four championship finalists enter the season-ending event with equal points and race straight up for the title, with the first man to cross the finish being crowned champ. In the meantime, though, Truex doesn’t plan to alter his game plan. “Honestly, we can’t change who we are,” he said. “Just like (Martinsville), we’ve never won at the next two tracks, and we want to, so here we go. We’ll go see if we can do it. But if we don’t, oh, well, it doesn’t really matter.”

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Denny Hamlin. Denny Hamlin is a three-time winner at Texas, his most recent triumph in the Lone Star State coming earlier this season. If Hamlin isn’t the odds-on favorite to go to Victory Lane on Sunday, he’s at the very least one of the drivers worth keeping a close eye on. ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson. It’s been a long, frustrating season for seventime Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, who is on the verge of going winless for the second year in a row. The only good news for Johnson? He’s a seven-time winner at Texas Motor Speedway. ▶▶ Martin Treux Jr. Martin Truex Jr. leads all drivers this season with a series-high seven wins and comes to Texas riding the momentum of his most dominant performance of 2019. That performance came last weekend at Martinsville, where he led an incredible 464 of 500 laps en route to a runaway, Championship 4-clinching victory. ▶▶ Joey Logano. Clinging to the fourth and final transfer spot for the Championship 4, Joey Logano is in an enviable yet somewhat volatile position heading to Texas, where he owns a single victory. The reigning Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion doesn’t necessarily need to win on Sunday, but he can’t afford a bad finish. ▶▶ Kyle Busch. A three-time Texas winner in Monster Energy Series competition, Kyle Busch is no stranger to Victory Lane at the 1.5-mile track. Busch has been a stranger to Victory Lane since mid-summer, however, having gone uncharacteristically winless over some four-anda-half months. If Busch can end his drought this weekend, the reward will be an automatic ticket into the Championship 4.

n Feb. 23, 2014, Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, led 54 of 200 laps to collect his second career Daytona 500 victory. The Kannapolis, N.C., native broke a 55-race winless drought dating back to 2012 even though he finished second five times in 2013. He endured several lengthy periods of rain that pushed the end of the race to 11 hours after the 43-car field took the initial green flag. Forty-two lead changes and four multi-car accidents were the storylines of the race. An accident triggered by Austin Dillon with seven laps to go set up a final two-lap shootout to the finish.

Earnhardt moved smoothly past Brad Keselowski on the restart. Behind him, Denny Hamlin passed Jeff Gordon and was in Earnhardt’s rearview mirror with one lap to go. Earnhardt sealed the deal when former Daytona 500 winners Kevin Harvick and Jamie McMurray crashed and brought out the caution. Their crash froze the field and secured the victory. Hamlin finished second, followed by Keselowski and teammates Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. “Winning this race is the greatest feeling that you could feel in this sport besides accepting the trophy for the championship,” Earnhardt said after emerging from his car in Victory Lane. “I didn’t know if I’d ever get the chance to feel it again and it feels just as good.”

Born May 15, 2000, Gilliland is the son of David Gilliland, who made 333 NASCAR Cup Series starts between 2006 and 2018, and the grandson of Butch Gilliland, a journeyman West Coast stock car racer who claimed the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West title in 1997. Todd Gilliland began racing when he was 3 years old and eventually starred in the quarter-midget ranks, scoring 34 victories and claiming multiple championships before graduating to Late Model competition. In 2014, Gilliland notched his first Late Model victory and two days after his 15th birthday he became the youngest winner in the ARCA Menards Series by going to Victory Lane in his first series start at Ohio’s Toledo Speedway. homas Tucker, tire specialist for Premium Motorsports and driver Reed Sorenson, saw his first NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway in the mid-1990s at the age of 15. The trip prompted a strong desire to become a part of the racing scene. “It was a dream to work in the sport and once I saw my first race, I was pretty much hooked,” Tucker said. “In 2000, I went to Nashville Auto Diesel College and also took a fabrication course. I ended up moving to North Carolina and started

crew member profile: thomas tucker working for Morgan Shepherd’s race Cup team in 2002.” Shepherd was fielding his own cars with on a very limited budget and could use all the help he could get. “I guess you could call it cheap labor, but that’s the way it was at the time,” Tucker said. “You have to start off somewhere. While there, I was doing a little bit of everything because it was a small team. My jobs included working as a mechanic and as a fabricator. “ Over the years, Tucker also joined CGM Racing, Frank Cicci Racing, BK Racing, TriStar Racing and Premium Motorsports in March of 2019. Working tires is a repetitious process but

also one of the most important jobs in the sport. Tucker also helps fabricate cars, pull and install engines, load the transporter, and do whatever else is needed. He brings a wealth of mechanical experience but tires are his main focus. “When we come in on Friday, we get four sets of tires for practice,” Tucker said. “We put them into actual sets. We take care of the tires during practice and also take care of the tire pressures. As soon as practice is over, we get race tires, and those could be six to 11 sets. It just depends on the track. When those tires come off the car, we check air pressures and do tread depths and give those to the crew or car chief. They make adjustments accordingly.”

Why is ROXOR becoming more and more prevalent on the NASCAR circuit? Because NASCAR fans make the perfect market for the off-road vehicle, according to ROXOR Senior Marketing Manager Dan Proffer. “ROXOR is committed to supporting NASCAR because
Spotlight we want the sport to grow into the next stage,” Proffer said. “We’re committed to not only being a new sponsor, but we have plans to be here for a while.” With a price point of $16,000 per vehicle and a demographic of 35- to 65-year-old males, ROXOR fits the bill as a potential NASCAR partner. NASCAR Vice Chairman Mike Helton owns several ROXOR off-road vehicles. The marketing campaign at Homestead-Miami Speedway will offer fans an opportunity to see the ROXOR off-road vehicles on display. The speedway will operate the products throughout its 650-acre facility during Ford Championship Weekend. Several other NASCAR tracks have purchased Mahindra tractors for use by speedway operations personnel. “As far as fans are concerned, we’ll have these vehicles on display and we’ll offer fans a chance to win one,” Proffer said. “Our strategy is we want to get involved at as many tracks as possible. Our goal is to be in every track in some capacity – whether it’s on a car or an activation at a race track.”

One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and

In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate

That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures.
