Hamlin Chokes in Cowtown, Harvick Locks it Down In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his review and analysis of the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend. This race locked in another of the final 4 drivers headed to the championship at Homestead-Miami, and Eric takes us through all the major storylines coming out of Ft. Worth. One of the biggest upsets this weekend came for Denny Hamlin. Hamlin showed a lot of promise all season long, including winning the first race at Texas earlier in the spring. However, 0 0 4

it seems 2019 still wasn’t his year. Eric takes us through his performance this weekend, and talks us through what it means for Hamlin as a driver. But there’s also the race itself, with the history of Texas Motor Speedway not doing a lot to raise fan expectations this weekend. Eric takes us through the 2019 aero package, and how it’s been performing on track at Texas this year. How can it be improved? How has it changed? All that and more, plus Eric puts Texas on the Groovy Gauge, in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

hey say everything’s bigger in Texas. So it goes with Kevin Harvick’s victories. Harvick, who has never won at Texas Motor Speedway in the spring, made it three consecutive triumphs in the fall playoff race at TMS as he ran away from the field in Sunday’s AAA Texas 500. Following are the five biggest takeaways from the second of three races in the Round of 8. By Jared Turner

Chase Elliott’s Disastrous Round of 8 Continues

A

week after a mechanical issue derailed his efforts at Martinsville, Chase Elliott endured an equally disappointing outing at Texas. Only this time, the blame fell squarely on the shoulders of the driver of the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Elliott’s day effectively ended just after it had started, when the second-generation driver’s car got up into the marbles and slapped the outside wall on Lap 19 of 334. “I made a mistake, got loose and crashed,” Elliott said. “I really hate that happened. Obviously, it’s not good and not what you’re looking for. It’s just my mistake, and there’s really no excuse for it.” With heavy damage and in need of extensive repairs, Elliott lost multiple laps and dropped all the way to last place in the running order. He ultimately finished 32nd — a horrible outcome on a day when he couldn’t afford it. Now, Elliott’s only viable path to the Championship 4 is winning this weekend’s elimination race in Phoenix.

Denny Hamlin Was The Biggest Loser At Texas

E

ntering Sunday’s middle race in the Round of 8, Denny Hamlin looked like a pretty solid bet to reach the Championship 4. By the time Hamlin left Texas, however, that wasn’t the case anymore. Hamlin’s 28th-place finish coupled with Kevin Harvick’s victory dropped Hamlin from second to fifth in the standings, leaving him one position to the wrong side of the cutline for advancing to Homestead-Miami Speedway as part of the Championship 4 who will race straight up there for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship. Hamlin, whose day at Texas took a dire turn when his No. 11 Toyota went for a solo spin resulting in significant damage, is now 20 points behind rival Joey Logano — the driver currently holding the final transfer spot for Homestead. So, to make it into the Championship 4, Hamlin needs to win next weekend’s elimination race in Phoenix or run extremely well and hope that Logano and/or Kyle Busch run into trouble.

It Was a Banner Day For Stewart-Haas Racing

C

ould Sunday’s race have gone any better for Stewart-Haas Racing? In addition to SHR driver Kevin Harvick winning and punching his ticket into the Championship 4, SHR drivers made it a clean sweep of the top three finishing positions as SHR’s Aric Almirola finished second and teammate Daniel Suarez crossed the finish line in third (SHR’s other driver, Clint Bowyer, finished 11th after leading 36 laps). “I am really proud of the effort by everybody at Stewart-Haas Racing, Roush Yates Engines and Ford Motor Company,” Almirola said. “Our cars were really, really good from the time we unloaded here.” Suarez, whose future at SHR beyond 2019 remains up in the air, was equally pleased to run so well. “That was a very solid night, and I am very happy with the performance and speed that we brought from the shop,” Suarez said. “Everyone back at the shop did a great job. I am very happy for Stewart-Haas Racing.”

Kyle Larson is Miffed at Bubba Wallace

K

yle Larson’s already longshot hopes of advancing to Homestead as part of the Championship 4 took a severe blow on Sunday night at Texas as he finished 12th. Larson, who now ranks seventh among the eight remaining title contenders, blamed his mediocre finish on Richard Petty Motorsports driver Bubba Wallace, whom Larson accused of deliberately spinning to bring out a caution on lap 243 of 334. The yellow flag, which flew right in the middle of a cycle of green-flag pit stops, cost Larson numerous positions on the track, and the Chip Ganassi Racing driver never managed to completely recover. “What really killed our race was the No. 43 (Wallace) spinning on purpose,” Larson said. “They put us a lap down. I think we were up to fourth at that point. It really killed us and a few others. … I feel like we had a good shot to win up until the No. 43 spun in front of us.”

Kevin Harvick is Virtually Unstoppable in the Fall at Texas

A

nother playoff race at Texas. Another clutch performance by Kevin Harvick. For the third consecutive fall, Harvick scored a commanding victory in the Lone Star State and in so doing earned an automatic berth into the Championship 4. So what is it about TMS in the fall that bodes so well for Harvick and his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing team led by veteran crew chief Rodney Childers? “You know, this is one of those tracks, and Phoenix next week is one that — they’re kind of Kevin and Rodney’s playgrounds, so to speak, or have been historically,” SHR co-owner Tony Stewart said after Harvick started from the pole and led 119 of 334 laps. “You know that these are good opportunities. To win in such a dominant fashion, that’s the kind of day that sets a statement to the competition that we feel like our team is peaking at the right time and getting ready for the end of the year.”

Just Sayin’ Tony Stewart challenged Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin to a fight.

Not Blowing Smoke: Tony Stewart Thinks It’s Time For Drivers To Man Up By Jared Turner

N

ever one to withhold a strong opinion, three-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion and Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner Tony Stewart didn’t mince words when asked over the weekend to weigh in on the previous weekend’s post-race altercation between Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin. “It frustrates the crap out of me,” Stewart said on Saturday at an event where he was inducted into the Texas Motorsports Hall of Fame. “I can’t stand watching these guys,” Stewart continued, his frustration starting to bubble over. “I’m watching Joey Logano with his hands on his crew guy in front of him so he can act like he’s swinging back here. I’m like, ‘For God’s sake guys, this is getting embarrassing.’” Stewart then took his assessment of the Logano/Hamlin fight to the next level. “I’ll tell you what: Just line both of them up; I’ll whip their ass by myself, together,” he said. “I don’t care. I’ll take them both on. We can do it right after this is over. Take them to the media center, I’ll whip both their asses. You can put them right beside each other. I’ll take

them down.” While some might frown on Stewart — a team owner — directing such provocative comments at drivers who compete for rival organizations of StewartHaas Racing, the fact is that Stewart has earned the right be as blunt as he wants to be. When you win 49 races and three championships as a driver at the sport’s highest level, and then build one of the sport’s most elite organizations as a team owner, you earn the right to say pretty much anything you wish. Stewart knows this, of course, but kudos to him for actually speaking his mind. Whether his opinion is right, wrong or somewhere in between, Stewart should be applauded for his candor. There’s simply not enough people in the sport these days with the guts to say what they really think.

Texas: The Big Three Heading into the Final Four This week Rusty Walrus is back with his reaction to the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Heading into the final round of 8 next week, there was a lot of fallout this weekend. Rusty gives us his take on what happened out on the track, and what it means as we look ahead to Phoenix. First up we have Kevin Harvick running away with the win. Rusty’s reaction is as usual priceless, and he takes us through the Big 3 who’ve managed to lock in their place for the 0 2 0

But the aero package was also the hot topic this weekend, and Rusty gives us his reaction to the overall racing we saw at Texas, the on-track product so to speak, this weekend. Rusty sees improvement over 2018, but he still has some notes on where it should be heading in the next generation. All that and more in this week’s episode of the Rusty Report!

n Tuesday, October 29th, the NASCAR iRacing Pro Series headed to the rough Atlanta Motor Speedway for its second race of the season, a 150-lap showdown on the 1.5-mile track. On pole was Slip Angle Motorsports driver Santiago Tirres alongside the Drill Aisle’s Steve Sheehan. Daytona victor John Gorlinsky started fourth. Tirres pulled out an early lead, with thirdplace starter Nathan Lyon trailing behind. When the caution came out on lap 14 for a Ryan Lowe wreck, it was clear that Ray Alfalla would be a force to be reckoned with. It’s no surprise: Alfalla is a four-time eNASCAR iRacing Series champion. Alfalla started ninth, but was already up to third when the caution came out. Alfalla, though, fell to sixth as the field pitted under that caution, but by lap 35, Alfalla had grabbed the lead from Tirres and drove away handily, over a tenth of a second faster each lap. It was smooth sailing until the caution came out for Liam Brotherton, who wrecked on lap 67. The caution came in the middle of green flag pit stops, meaning four drivers had not yet pitted, trapping

This meant Daytona winner Gorlinsky inherited the lead. On the lap 72 restart, Alfalla fell to sixth, but took only a couple laps to work his way right back through the field, executing an impressive three-wide move to take second place. Six laps after the restart, Alfalla had the lead once again, taking it from Bob Bryant, one of the driver who stayed out on the previous yellow. However, Alfalla would be challenged by Brandon Hayse Kettelle on lap 85, but Kettelle began to fall off and Alfalla would begin driving away once again by lap 90.

Another pit stop cycle took place with about 40 laps remaining, but it stayed green this time, and when it was all over, Alfalla maintained his lead, which had lengthened to nearly three seconds over Kettelle. The rest of the race was clean and green, a welcome sight for race winner Alfalla. It’s Alfalla’s first, and most likely won’t be his last win in the Pro Series this season. The NASCAR iRacing Pro Series will be back on track on Tuesday, November 5th at 8 PM eastern time, racing around the 0.75-mile Richmond Raceway. The race will be shown live on the Podium eSports Twitch channel and on the iRacing eSports Network YouTube channel.

NASCAR Vice Chairman Mike Helton owns several ROXOR off-road vehicles. The marketing campaign at Homestead-Miami Speedway will offer fans an opportunity to see the ROXOR off-road vehicles on display. The speedway will operate the products throughout its 650-acre facility during Ford Championship Weekend. Several other NASCAR tracks have purchased Mahindra tractors for use by speedway operations personnel. “As far as fans are concerned, we’ll have these vehicles on display and we’ll offer fans a chance to win one,” Proffer said. “Our strategy is we want to get involved at as many tracks as possible. Our goal is to be in every track in some capacity – whether it’s on a car or an activation at a race track.”

ROXOR had title sponsorship rights for the XFINITY Series race at New Hampshire.

MSG: The Q Collar Is the Future of Brain Safety By da n guttenpla n

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One of Cormier’s areas of focus is concussion prevention and education. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven

0 6 6

Texas Rearview: november 4, 2019

years, and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and

health and wellness human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with race car drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time, ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the long-term effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate

Explaining the Slosh Effect This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. “What the woodpecker and battle ram have in

0 6 8

Texas Rearview: november 4, 2019

rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” The Q-Collar will be coming to several racing series, in addition to college football and its continued use in the NFL. “It’s a preventative collar, and studies have indicated decreases in the incidence of concussions by almost 90 percent, depending on the sport,” said Cormier. “The helmet protects the skull and skin from fractures and lacerations. The HANS device protects the neck from fractures. Those are integral safety tools, and we hope the collar will fill in several important missing pieces.” common is they depend on striking the head to survive and eat,” Cormier said. “What they have in common with us is related to yawning. Each time we yawn, we mildly obstruct a small amount of blood from draining to the brain. That slows the slosh effect internally of the brain moving inside the skull.” In fluid dynamics, the slosh effect is the movement of liquid inside another object. In this example, the vehicle is the skull and the moving substance is the brain, which is composed of 70-percent water.
